47 year old Gen-X here. You have no idea how common that toxic households were back then. They we always hidden from view, even thought you could tell who the kids were who lived in them. I was one of them and still suffer from the experience. I personally remember being told that psychiatrists and psychologists will damage your mind so don't subject your mind to them and it took 30 years before I decided that was utter bullshit. Unfortunately, both of my parents are passed now so I don't get the luxury of informing them of the damage they did, intentional or not. James wasn't alone, he was just lucky enough to voice it for the rest of us who lived a comparable life.
The angriest song on a very angry album. This was the first album released right after their most loved bassist Cliff Burton was killed in a tour bus crash. This album is all the raw emotion of them trying to deal with his loss. James left all his emotions on the table with this album. It's my favorite album of theirs. Every song on this album is a straight up smasher. Great reaction!
I can somewhat relate to the lyrics. My mother was amazing, the best mother you could ever ask for. My biological father on the other hand, was an alcoholic abuser that I had to live with for the first 8 years of my life. My mom got away from him and ended up marrying a man who was truly a father to me until the day he passed. All 3 are gone now, all died within a 3 year span, which wasn’t easy to deal with. However, the scars and pain from those first 8 years have never left me, and never will. Obviously I can’t remember everything, but I was old enough by the end to remember enough, and my mom filled in the rest.
It's funny how we all have specific memories of moments like this. I was on a date with a girl at the mall in summer of 1992(I know, so romantic - I was 12, it was what we did), and we went to a music store in the mall. I bought two tapes with the money my mom had given me(don't worry - we ate and had a good time otherwise). I bought Nevermind by Nirvana and The Black Album. Absolutely changed my music life from there. Good times.
My parents gave me And Justice for All and Master of Puppets as a stocking stuffer in 1990 when I was 10 years old. I don't know how many times I've listen to these masterpieces. Best Christmas!!
When I was a teenager this song was my go-to pissed off cathartic release track. I don’t relate to it as much now, as I’m older and I have young kids of my own and have realised how stressful parenting and life in general can be. These days I acknowledge that even though my parents made mistakes along the way, they tried as well as they knew how to.
The aggression, pain and truth in this song blows me away every time I listen to it. The lyrics resonate with most people if they take some time to listen to them instead of just hearing them.
I was 20 years old when 'Justice...' came out and this song, for many reasons, really connected with my life and the way my parents intended to direct it. You know, I'm an old dad of four, now, but it inspired me, throughout my grownup life, not to repeat the same mistakes my parents did. But above all, I'm glad to see that my favorite band still finds its way to the heart of young people. Be well and be happy!
Imagine, I was 15years old when this album came out. Parents was about to split up, me coping with teenage angst. Dyer's Eve help me alot to ease my pain as a scrawny teenager with family issues. Promised myself my kids will not suffer like me and I did it. Proud dad of 2 grown kids.
OMG, you made me cry the moment you said that both your parents has passed on. I lost both my parents when I was in High School in the late nineties and at that time to me this was a rebellious song taken a whole different meaning when Mom and Dad died! Im 43 years old and still this song connects with me in a deep spiritual way. Love and peace! All the way from sunny South Africa!
This community is always here for you. Please never forget that. Ask for help if you need it and listen to the music that makes you feel what you need to feel so you can get it out. This song is about the very beginning of healing. Letting the anger out is the 2nd stage of grief after denial. Allowing the anger out just allows you to grieve.
There's a few songs James has written about his parents and his mom that really cut deep. The God That Failed on the Black Album is about his mom dying from cancer and refusing treatment, and his anger towards it. Another one is Mama Said, off of the album Load.
Another amazing Metallica reaction. I've learned so much about these songs from your breakdowns, which it amazing. Too busy just thrashing to appreciate the lyrical content. Thank you!
Great reaction! Watching your face melt was interesting. I can just think that was my same reaction back in 1988, when I was 13 with the cassette liner in hand and the Walkman on fire!
James writes incredibly raw and true lyrics about things that are meaningful. The new album has a lot of that as well, literally exposing everything that he has been going through in the last few years. Great video as always.
Rough life experiences have James powerful emotions. This allowed him to be such a passionate artist. You can always tell his craft is attached to his souls.
That "Dear mother, dear father" always gets you going... This is James just venting out his frustrations about his parents not being there... It is just sad that James went on to repeat this behavior before he realized what he was doing and it is a large reason why he has been in rehab a couple of times... He just didn't have an example on how you should be as a parent with all the chaos and strict religious upbringing he got for the time he got it. It wasn't that long after his mom passed that they started Metallica. I think he was like 15-16 when his mom died and at 17 they were riding the van cross country to record Kill Em All. James has talked extensively on how therapeutic the music has been in his life and you can see and feel it on the albums over the years. It is just pure emotion from start to finish and this release valve has kept him from doing "other things"... That would have most likely ended up with him being locked up. But enough of that... This song is just crazy good!
"Children are seen but are not heard" is actually a variation of "do not speak until spoken to" - another "parental gem" - and has less to do with children input on any family violence or not, but more about simple rigid obedience, hence "do as I say, not as I do"... holy crap, I didn't realize how many parental cliches there actually are in the lyrics, lol. All that's missing is "Quit crying or I'll give you something to cry about", lol.
“Children are seen but are not heard - tear out everything inspired” - I grew up with this and it hit home, it was my anthem - but not in the way you interpreted it. Just means when parents don’t respect kids, and ignore any sense of creativity. My parents ignored my love for music and pushed the whole school, then college, then work till you die ideals. Basically the whole song to me is about overbearing parents who shelter their kids so badly they’re not prepared for the real world and are screwed when they finally face life. This happened 100% to me and why I related.
Another awesome reaction Lilly jane you look absolutely beautiful this evening and justice for all is one of my favorite albums along with their S&M album ❤
One of the songs that got me through my youth back in the 90's. James really has a way to put the dark realities of life into words. And this song is one of his best on the lyrical part, it still touches a nerve when I hear it.
Yeah your idea is good ! Thanks for this reaction, i totally resonate with it. The lyrics are so deep, so subtle at the same time. Everything is said. It still hits me strongly. Like a healing song itself.
Ok I’m impressed! You are not the typical person who does reactions. You actually listen to the lyrics and understand. You are probably half my age and pointed out things I have missed in songs I’ve listened to years.

What finally got me over the hump is I decided that I am not going to be upset about anything I have absolutely no control over, and I also know now, that they did the best that they could.
How many parents completely ignore their kids and when they do try to speak to them they tell them to "shut up" and "be quiet". My dad was like that and I knew tons of kids in school who's parents treated their kids that way.
"Dear mother, dear father, you've clipped my wings before I learned to fly! Unspoiled, unspoken, I'VE OUTGROWN THAT FUCKING LULLABY" I love James' anger in these lyrics, especially because of the song topic. Every kid should hear this. Rock on, Metallica! 🤘
Am sorry to hear about your loss. The healing process of losing one’s parent(s) is long and arduous. You’ll eventually manage the abject grief, come to terms and move forward with life❤️ stay lovely 😊
I had a rough childhood. Parents divorced when i was 3. Lived with mom and grandma. She bounced around different guys. No one was really supportive of my sister and I. We made it out alive. Dig your hair. Loved you as Rogue in X-Men
James Hetfield was raised by conservative Christian science believers in small-town California... his family was abusive and because of their beliefs, James was not allowed to see doctors when he was sick or given access to medicine. That got him ostracized as a kid in school... Then, his father disappeared without a word... he and his sister fought constantly and then his mom died refusing cancer treatments while he was a teenager... He stayed w/ his older brother until he was 18... His experience seeing the world outside of his family was traumatic to say the least. It drove him to abuse alcohol early in life... His fear of abandonment (compounded by the death of Metallica bassist Cliff Burton in 1986) also made him abusive & controlling towards band members in Metallica over the years. His alcohol and substance abuse even recently got him in rehab and filed for divorce. Sadly, some damage from childhood can never be undone... Yes, please... review the 'And justice for all' album honestly... 🤘🤘
The kids are NOT wishing for their parents to split. The kids are wishing for their parents to be adults and put aside their petty selfish childish bullshit differences and learn to get along and make it work for the sake for their family. Multiple generations of kids that grew up in broken homes is exactly what's causing society to spiral further and further into the depths of depravity and despair. Suicide rates are the highest they've ever been, people are killing each other in the streets, mental health issues are skyrocketing and it can all be traced back to the gradual societal and moral decay that stems from the systematic destruction of the family.
One of Metallica's best. A comeback album when we all didn't know what the band was going to do after Cliff's death. I saw this tour in Sacramento. About the song, not many of us knew James' background, so the lyrics were something we could adapt as our own without judgement of him. But of course the honesty was pretty brutal.

One thing, though: "children are seen but are not heard" was/IS a religious tenet that demanded complete silent obedience from children, who would be brutally beaten if they disobeyed. The phrase "rule of thumb" comes from the same mindset, but against women. It was entirely legal to beat one's wife in public, but only with a stick thinner than the husband's thumb.
unpopular opinion this is my favorite ALBUM from Metallica. Cliff created their best riffs and songs but... This album was a lot of pain in the making. IMHO. Either way great song.
This was pretty much every metal heads anthem back in the day growing up with parents like this..... all of us could relate. This was our release in the pit 🤘😎🤘
The "Children are seen but not heard" reference is an old saying for when the parents are dictating their own rules without wanting to hear the child's opinion. SO basically you are here to listen and not talk back.
It's not about not hearing or listening to the children, it's about children respecting adults and not interrupting. The phrase is misunderstood and has been hijacked by power tripping parents without any idea what it means

Your facial expressions and how you get into the lyrics is so much fun, happy go lucky. Keep doing what your doing and being you. Always be blessed and love lil sis
First concert I went to without parental supervision... Damaged Justice Tour. Life-changing event, I tells ya! Amazing show and without exaggerating, I can say that it is still the best show I was ever to in my entire life... and I have seen hundreds of bands over the years... including Metallica several more times. They were at the top of their game in 1989. Amazing experience!
This song represents a before and after of Metallica career. This song marked the end on old era (The raw, the thrashier), after this they decided to go in a different way. I remember Lars in an interview says “after Dyers eve we decided to change, what could exist after James claims to his parents all his rage and furious. He was angry, really angry. We need to go in another direction or die, even people don’t understand that”.
@@TokusatsuGamingfan who? Don’t misunderstand me, I love the change… I love all their after job (alternative, rock, heavy, thrashie approach). Also the James lyrics improved.
You can fact check me, but i believe i remember when this album was released, i read an article and they said it took 11 MONTHS to get the timing right between everyone to record this song cuz it's so complicated!
If your unsure about what the lyrics are about, James grew up in a Christian science household. A lot of his songs reflect that especially in their albums. This kinda resonates with us because this song is how some of us grew up. I was raised by similar rules and experiences, this is a hidden gem because people don't think about it. It's not one of the greatest songs but for some of us it's one of their best songs.
And we have come to the final song of my favorite Metallica album . But what a song to go out on ! This one rips hard musically , emotionally and mentally !

I was worried when this song came up, after you have let us in to your past (we pay attention to more than just the music) You react to 2 of my personal favorite bands (Tool and Metallica) I wanna say your positivity and personality is infectious and I'm know it makes people happy.
METALLICA's last killer album!!! Still rules!! Pure THRASH!!! 😎 👍 ❤
love this song
This song represents a before and after of Metallica career. This song marked the end on old era (The raw, the thrashier), after this they decided to go in a different way. I remember Lars in an interview says “after Dyers eve we decided to change, what could exist after James claims to his parents all his rage and furious. He was angry, really angry. We need to go in another direction or die, even people don’t understand that”.
Try telling people like Aaron Mckinlay that, lol.
@@TokusatsuGamingfan who? Don’t misunderstand me, I love the change… I love all their after job (alternative, rock, heavy, thrashie approach). Also the James lyrics improved.
No need to apologize, any Metallica fan will tell you, Metallica will get you through tough times, anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, crying.
You can fact check me, but i believe i remember when this album was released, i read an article and they said it took 11 MONTHS to get the timing right between everyone to record this song cuz it's so complicated!
I've been through it myself. I've played guitar for 22 years with no encouragement. You're doing a good thing here.
James on full throttle lyricwise…..Kirk’s solo is devine 🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘🤘
Great fkn song & it’s my fav for sure 🤘
If your unsure about what the lyrics are about, James grew up in a Christian science household. A lot of his songs reflect that especially in their albums. This kinda resonates with us because this song is how some of us grew up. I was raised by similar rules and experiences, this is a hidden gem because people don't think about it. It's not one of the greatest songs but for some of us it's one of their best songs.
You should check this song on "And Justice for Jason" it is so much heavier with great bass sound
I've been a Metallica fan since I was 15 and Kill em all came out! What a journey, and now 72 seasons album has been on repeat since Friday morning.
And we have come to the final song of my favorite Metallica album . But what a song to go out on ! This one rips hard musically , emotionally and mentally !
Best song of metallica.
Dyers Eve is the GOAT!
