Don't forget to check the o-ring seal that goes around the mass air flow sensor that it wasn't accidentally ruined so that it seals correctly so there's no air leaks there
Excellent advise thanks
I can vouch for this.
I saw his video on cleaning the Mass Airflow sensor and the Throttlebody.
I did both and my trucks runs noticeably better

Sweet. Another tip from my favorite online mechanic. Nobody I've come across has come close to the amount of solid helpful all around knowledge that you have shared Scotty.

One time within a month I lost 8 mpg. Air filter didn't do it, but cleaning this sensor did! Worth doing once and a while for sure!
What you just sprayed is the temperature thermistor..it senses intake air temp..that will do nothing...if you flip it 90 deg and look down inside that long tube, you'll see the two hot wire sensors.. those are the ones that need cleaning.. they measure airflow as opposed to just air temp
Funny. I was looking this up because my car was having problems. Saw the video where the guy explained exactly what you said. Bought the can today, cleaned the MAF, problem gone. And now this gets recommended to me.
Think he was just demonstrating how to clean the sensor not which sensor is which
Iilmikeyab, that was an excellent tip. My vehicle runs as smooth as the day I bought it. Start your own channel bro, I’ll watch!
How do u clean those!? I'm sum what familiar with cars my dad made me work on them with him since I was 7. Now I'm a grown woman in my mid 30s and done all my own work on every car I've owned . Only thing I couldn't do was my alternator, but I did take it out so the guy could rebuild it & then I just put it back in myself on my BMW..
But now I'm fixing my daughter's first car 94 Accord LX... Just started but it runs rough a lil... Changed all fluids, working on air filter & spark plugs change as we speak. I'm trying to figure out what to clean that sensor with I can't find the stuff Scotty has & want to know of the sensor u speak of? Can I use dust off?? Also the issue with the Honda is when it first starts it idles very high around 2k rpms then dramatically drops after it's warmed up below 1k rpms to the notch right below or some time 2 notches below the 1k & sounds like it's gonna putter out & has once. Also it sounds louder I think then supposed to.. it's not throwing a rod or anything I Kno that sound . But it does have a special exhaust that came on it. You know a rice burner sorta sounding one. .lol
I love mr Scotty. He always to the point ,short, important info & of course funny too. Thank you for the lecture....

Ive been doing this for years and never thought to wait an hour to make sure the chemical is evaporated. Awesome advise! +10 year watcher! Thanks Scotty!
Just cleaned mine and the Throttle body as well, idles a LOT better now.
Just did this to my wife's minivan, as well as cleaned the idle air control, worked beautifully! 😎
HeHe Spray your troubles away;)
I wish I live near this man so I can learn about mechanics
You can learn almost everything to be known about mechanics or mechanic-ing, not a real word but it gets the point across.
Im doing these first thing in the morning 2moro thank u
That works very well even when you have no troubles. You get some horsepower back especially on older cars. And it does not cost much!
I learn something from you everyday. Thank you, Sir!!
And a bad/dirty mass air sensor can effect how the transmission shifts making it wear out sooner. Using a aftermarket air filter that doesn't fit perfectly can allow dust to get around and past it which can soil and contaminate the sensor giving you motor /trans problems. My truck is currently in the shop getting the transmission rebuilt. ( I wish I had known earlier)
My 32yr old niece is interested in learning more about maintaining her car herself. I think that cleaning the MAF on her 1999 Toyota Camry would be a good start. Her car only has 47k on it but it could use some attention with AT-205 too.
She's a lucky gal. I have the same 99 car with over 400,000 miles on it. It jus keeps running. My biggest problem is not mechanical, it's those plastic door handles that always break.
I learned this years ago when my car stopped running and i had to have it towed home. I started withe the simple things and a dirty MAF sensor was the problem. Now i clean it every year.
I love watching his videos. Scotty is the best. All the best from the UK 🇬🇧 🇺🇸
I took my MAF sensor out, and it was clean as could be. I've had my car 12 years, but it only has 54k miles on it.
What car? Is it for sale?
This works great, it fixed a fluctuating idle for me.
The angel of car repairs✨
I remember my dad had an old 80s Crown Vic LTD had a carburetor back in the good old days
don't forget to clean the electrical harness/pins! if they are dirty it can increase resistance in the circuit and report false voltage readings
I cleaned mine in 2004 Buick century. I researched this and they say it is so easy to damage them and better to replace then clean. If I have to take it all apart, this time I’ll just put a new one in and change the air filter in one swoop.
Love this guy. Most car owners or i should say test dummies only know how to start a vehicle and step on the go pedal. Lol
Spray and troubles away...
Scotty Kilmer 👍
Remember wait for an hour because if you put it in straight away it will Short Circuit and destroy the sensor
Don't be ridiculous. It is only because any foriegn propellant in the air intake will alter the air fuel ratio on the next startup. That would not be the best idea if you have just cleared the computer and it is relearning the A/F ratio. Most I've seen happen is a few backfires on startup. As long as the sensor is not dripping I wouldn't worry about the wait time. Unless it is the style sensor that can hold a puddle of the sensor cleaner inside of it. But just shake it around in all directions, wait a minute or two and you should be all set. Especially if the wind is blowing.
What is very easy to do is to break the tiny sensor wire with that red straw on the can. Some of these sensors are very delicate. I suspect most T-rex armed zoomers will go at these with hatchets and chisels in years to come. People will become good at tiktok videos, but very poor at mechanical skills.
@@BukitMan I am sure I destroyed a sensor because powered it straight away . Point too eliminate any chance of it shorting don't power straight away ok 10 minutes
@@SLR-hn5yy Yeah, well you can look at a MAF sensor wrong and it can be destroyed.

Damn scotty can you please hold the can still so I can read it?😅 love your videos!
It definitely sat on the car for several seconds..
CRC brand MAF cleaner. They also make a great throttle body cleaner thats basically just an all around intake cleaner which I’ve used on the MAF as well. It doesn’t seem to mind and I can use one can to clean everything along the intake
Wondering if isopropyl would work
My thoughts too.
My thoughts too.
Everyone needs to know car guy like this. I got lucky and am related to one.
I laughing when Scotty said “it’s not ROCKET SCIENCE” lol.
I spray cleaned my throttle body and MAF in my '99 Ranger after watching Scotty's video on this last year. The truck wouldn't start initially. It took 3 tries to start cuz it was all so dirty, and it ran like crap for 2 minutes, then smoothed out, lol.
And this is why Scotty is da Man! 💪
I took that advice you gave a couple of years ago and it worked very well. I've recommended it to my friends.
I got some cleaning to do tomorrow!
I did this a while ago just to make sure it's not dirty. It was although it didn't look like it.
Just make sure you clean it with something that does not damage the sensor. I used electronic contacts cleaner, it's cheaper than specialized MAF spary cleaner and it worked really good, dried up quickly.
I bought carburetor cleaner to clean my carburetor on my car. I couldn't find the carburetor. Scotty said it's fuel injection! 😁
Macanics can be the biggest crooks I've never just got a inspection without having to spend something.this content is a very healthy one
My O2 sensor left bank as been blowing for months and I think this might be the solution.
I LOVE this guy!
If his voice is too loud turn down your volume- it's not rocket science! ❤
I did this on my 2004 kluger,12.5% better gas mileage.
Thanks Scotty
spray your troubles away! you crack me down!! regards from Colombia.
I wish I lived near this guy. He is a great mechanic.
You only cleaned the temp sensor. The sensor wires inside the mass air flow sensor needs to be cleaned. That makes a difference, dont forget to pull the EFI fuse for a couple of minutes
Thankyou. I didn't know that. I'm going to try that tomorrow
Learned this with Toyotas. They are famous for setting off lights on dashboard.

My 02 ranger had a dirty mass airflow sensor. Was sending an error code saying it was faulty.
Pulled it out, it was dirty. Cleaned it and it turned it from jumping between almost stalling and like 1500rpm back down to a normal and more importantly stable idle.
Hey Scotty, what is the name of the cleaner you are using?
CRC maf cleaner
@@scottykilmer where to buy.

People were telling me my transmission was going out. I was saving money to get it replaced but while i was doing that i decided to do some basics to the old girl. Did her spark plugs and cleaned this sensor and not only did the check engine light finally go off all the sudden my transmission shifts proper. Here i am 6 years later and the transmission is doing fantastic and the check light is off. I clean every time i think about it.
Scottys so intelligent and funny!
Mine was really dirty. Would jerk from acceleration at a stop and idle kind of low. Made a huge difference cleaning it
On a dark night in Hong Kong, I got my little Boeing 747 on the road with a can of contact cleaner. We had a switch in the hydraulic system that wasn't working and the technician said no replacement was available. I asked if he had contact cleaner. He did. A little squirt and we were on our way.
birther. 714....
That doesnt sound so safe lol
Hilarious! I was on that plane 😅.
Why do I think that one of Scotty’s grandkids went trick or treating as a mass airflow sensor? 😅
If you need to spray that on the sensor to get rid of a code, you need to replace the sensor, it only buys a little time before the code comes back.
I used to be a service writer at Honda. We had an Odyssey come in acting an erratically like it had mind of its own and was possessed. They had three or four technicians look at it couldn’t figure it out. Finally, they found it was a tiny piece of a leaf in the maf sensor
MAF sensor failure can cause no-start. If you unplug it and it starts (but, it'll run like crap), then you've found your problem.
The Internet is full of Scotty haters. That just means there's tons of ignorant people out there. Your MAF sensor uses a heated wire to sense air flowing past it. This cleaner safely removes dirt inhibiting the signal. Use the wrong stuff and it'll eat the plastic and the wire itself. Scotty is a good guy.
Computer contact cleaner does the trick too.Basically it dry cleaner solvent.
I run twin 25lbs tanks of this instead of NAWS. So much raw powah!!!!
Found that out the expensive way. Truck failed smog. Took it to a mechanic. Couldnt figure it out. Took it to the dealer. They replaced the cat. Still failed. Took a can of carb cleaner and sprayed it through the intake and immediatly i noticed a smoother idle. And it passed smog.
Expensive lesson.
Gracias señor Scotty for fixing s..t…y” 👀😱
CRC my favorite publisher of reference books. The same Chemical Rubber Company that makes those Cleaners that Scotty uses.
Good tip Scotty!
For me maf sensor was huge problem... car would not start and would start to lose power and turn off in the midle of the highway... cleande it and everything was perfect after that
Love your channel! Keep up the good work!!!!
Dang Scottie has so many views he must be worth millions
I had to learn that lesson the hard way!
Now , that I've been " Educated"
I do this on a regular basis.
Well Done!
By just spraying the sensor it runs smoother and it runs quieter with a lower idle and not wasting fuel. I need to do this more often on a more regular schedule.
Got to do with Yaris hatchback
I do every 6 mos.
I've watched this 23 times to make sure I understand it.
Me asf
Also, do your TPS (throttle position sensor) AND the throttle body/blade valve assembly. (Just don't forget to "on-plug" the sensor 😂 😉).
They get gummed up with road schmutz and don't close properly. Use a nylon brush and the spray and clean the plate and the mouth of the throttle body, clean out as much of the liquid gunk as you can with a paper towel and let it dry. Put it together and you're off to the races... Just don't forget your air cleaner! 😊
Scotty is the BEST !
