Hello Kartik, I just saw your video. This manouevre is called as 'Coupling' the engine with its rake or load ie; the train. The gentleman you filmed has done it following the safest possible procedures, if you'd notice that when the engine spacer (buffer) was about to make contact with the bogie, he walked out of the mating region. This usually avoids accidental crush. Great video, I am not working in the Railways, but like you even I am a rail fan. So keep observing, there's plenty to watch.
+David Domingo Don't they use gloves? This gentlemen does not want to get his hand dirty, as he is using a paper or cloth napkins. Then why not use gloves? As to other safety aspects, I agree. These folks really know how to do the job (be it night or day). May be since we are not used to it, we worry for the safety.
Things are changing....cant work like we used to in 70s or 80s.....Younger generation both from top management and labor class are educated and know things better now...
Remembered the scene from the movie unstoppable when denzil Washington and Chris pine were trying to buckle their 1206 to 777.. both of them need to watch this video..
Its high time we upgraded the working gear of these hardworking crew. Florescent uniform, boots and gloves to start with, will make them look smart and professional. In my opinion, the traditional khaki must be replaced. Everyone from the police, railway crew, bus conductors, auto rickshaw drivers to guards and watchmen wear some shade of khaki which looks jaded and unprofessional.
They have all rules and regulations for this but most of the time ground workers don't take it seriously or don't want to wear or some times it is not provided
dear I think you have to search the videos of "Shashi Tharoor On BBC debate" and watch, then you will able to understand that British looted from India.
true..........they must worn Gloves High visiable vest and safty shoes as they have good pay. donsnot matter railway provides or not. if railway will provide them then it would be a lot to them
Sir,I have doubt regarding those two horzintal cylindrical part in back and front of the compartment.how are those connected to the other compartment bars?
Gloves, Hard hat, proper steel toed shoes, ability to control the engine from crushing him. Too many safety violations, too many people standing around for the same job.
Those are sandals, not flip-flops. If his foot were to be run over or crushed by a train, steel-toe boots wouldn't make the slightest difference. Would be a good idea if he were to drop something on his foot though, I'd agree he'd be wise to wear them. Hard hat probably would be a good idea as well, but I don't see much to fall on him from above. Gloves wouldn't make any difference if his hands were crushed, and I'd say more often than not I've seen safety manuals saying not to wear gloves for various things as they are more likely to get caught on things - I don't think it's likely to make a difference either way here though. Wouldn't protect him from injury, he's not working with anything sharp or hot, gloves wouldn't help with something crushing his hands. I'd consider it to be his choice if he wants them. Locomotive came in very slowly and under control, he had a radio and there was good communication with hand signals. This was pretty typical for a buffer-and-chain coupling, they normally have someone between cars as they couple, even in more developed countries in Europe. Not as good as the US system where that's not needed, why anyone still uses buffer-and-chain is beyond me. Way safer than that video we've all seen of the German jackasses when the train came in at about 5 mph, and they were all laughing about it.
LOL at the flipflops. Though, on the positive side, he is not standing between the buffers when the loc runs into the cariages, like they always do on other videos. India seems to be such a harsh country, though there doesn't seem to be a manager nearby to tell all the spectating workers to get working?

Thanks for the explanation David. I was not trying to judge whether they were doing it right or wrong. Just observing, as you mentioned. :-)

Yes..I agree.Overalls with fluorescent safety-stripes + heavy-duty gloves and integrated communication devices will improve their work environment.
Khaaki is better.
It is still more recognisable by the common folk.
Khaaki uniform in India commands some level of respect.
They have all rules and regulations for this but most of the time ground workers don't take it seriously or don't want to wear or some times it is not provided
@@shinji_27 fluorescent is needed for identifying humans for safety purposes. Khakhi is similar to dirt color and NOT easily noticeable!

Govt should provide the hand gloves and shoes for them. If they workers not using advise them that importance of safety items.
Why Indian Railway don't provide them gloves ?
First time seeing a train with no rails on the side. in the US, they for worker safety.

Yes these are very common in Indian Trains, but the newer models of coaches or rake have the AAR type coupling, so things are changing now. 👍👍👍
