Well mate, that is the best drawer vid on the net. Well done. I approached Drifta for a set of drawers, but incorporating my own upright water tank at the rear. Unfortunately they could not accommodate, so I built my own similar to yours. What I learnt:
1. I used a sheet of 3mm HDPE that I cut. It was too thin. I screwed it in as I was not sure an adhesive would hold over time. As it was thin it slightly bowed. I also made the strips too wide @50mm. Your width looks good. Mine still slide OK, especially with silicon spray.
2. I remove it between trips. It is awkward and heavy to install/remove.
3. Nutserts can work loose when you are installing bolts.
4. Even expensive ply will bow.
5. Drawers are a bit overrated. I will re-design with one drawer, mesh shelving and tubs.
6. The Waeco dual fridge slides weigh a ton.
7. Price came in at about $1k including water tank.
8. Don't leave rear floor seat bolts unplugged......
Again...great job.
Regards, Nick
Second that, my Waeco fridge slide weighs as much as the fridge 😂
a trick i learned from a guy that builds subwoofer enclosures is lay your carpet out in the sun for about 45 minutes to an hour to let the carpet "relax" then it'll be easier to work with and you dont have to fight creases and folds, and on cold days a quick going over with a heat gun or a good hot hair dryer works a treat for making carpet more manageable, never tried it myself with anything other than replacing seat covers, great vid and an awesome solution to a problem, i'm thinking about working with a friend of mine to build a set of drawers for a '91 jeep XJ that i'm about to do a repower on
I love how honest you are and how you provide reasons for why you do things too
I try my best.
It sometimes gets me in trouble 😂
By far the best diy drawer system I’ve ever seen👏🏽👏🏽. I enjoy watching it over and over again. Cheers mate👍🏽
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it.
One of your best mate, really enjoyed that one, can't wait for the end reveal.
Thanks mate.
This finished product is mint in my opinion 👍👍
absolutely brilliant video dude.
it answered a few q’s for me prior to my build - the Teflon side strips as a guide to minimise sideward shuffling is perfect.
well done.
Glad it was helpful for you
Love your workshop. Especially love your two hang up calenders on the wall behind you. A pleasant distraction ☺️
Haha. Well spotted.
Awesome build. I used that yellow plastic that electricians use to run wiring through stud walls for my "drifta" runners, couple of bucks for a three metre length from memory. If they get dirty, a quick wipe and some silicon spray fixes them.
I thought about using yellow tongue but couldn’t find any hard facts that it works well or not. So I went for the real thing instead.
I did the same thing and I think it works pretty well
Thanks for the vid mate! Almost finished my tub setup now and this was a life saver. Struggled to find Teflon on short notice, but on advice from my local plastic supplier HDPE works almost as well with some silicon spray - it's great! Plus $30 for the lot!
Quality video mate, informative and good advice overall. Look forward to watching some more of your videos.
Bloody brilliant job. Considering you hand cut all the components, it actually fit better then half the ones I have seen come out of Drifta and they CNC cut their components. Probably saved yourself around 3k and months of wait time.
What a refreshing channel. Love your videos. Subjects that matter me to and every other normal 4x4'er
Awesome. Just like to point out this is the first and only video that I've seen so far where you get a nice professional finish with carpet instead of going the easy route and painting it black. Also like how you show laying down carpet isn't a easy task. Very nice.
Hey buddy.
Yeah I wanted to show all the aspects of the jobs. Even the annoying ones like laying the carpet.
Glad you liked it.
Thanks very much for this. I'm new to DIY and this gives me the confidence I need to make my own drawers!
You can do it! If ya need any tips msg me.
Great drawers mate, will try build a similar set for the back of my car!
Btw, the surface area doesn't come into play when calculating the force required to push the drawers,
Friction force = (friction coefficient of the material) X (downward force or mass of object)
You're saving money on materials by dividing it up into two strips but not halfing the force required to push the slides
Awesome job mate, great workmanship. Wish I had access to all those tools and equipment haha!
You have inspired me and that T section on the fridge slide is exactly what I need to do.....Great video....
Glad it could help buddy.
About to have a go making my own as soon. I like this Drifta idea of losing the slides in the draws.double up on the fridge slide ❤ great video and ideas 👍
Enjoyed the video a lot. The Bob Ross of draw making.
Hahaha. Thanks mate.
SUBSCRIBED! This was awesome man, stopped me from buying expensive and overpriced drifta drawers for my Hilux and Patrol, so excited to get started now! Fantastic content 😁👌
Haha. Good work man. You won’t regret it.
Looking great Steve, Having Drifta draws myself I can appreciate how good your must be. Cheers Steve
Hahaha. Drifts do some great gear.
Not trying to take anything away from them.
Great drawers. Makes it look incredibly easy as he has all the tools at hand. I can tell you form experience this is a lot harder without a table saw (most importantly) nail gun etc.
Absolutely I have an advantage with having my workshop with all the tools.
But I can be done without all that but a little bit more time consuming
@@Australian4x4Adventures 100%. I built a set for the back of my discovery 2. First time id done anything like that. fairly happy with the result but would do a lot different next time. Next time id probably hit up a cabinet maker or joiner with a big table saw and get them to cut all my panels.!
Nice job - well described and adapted from the awesome design of a drifta drawer! Having built my own a few years back I know theres a heap of work involved!
One thing I did with my fridge slide so I can open the 2 orange locking tabs at the same time is to use a a strip of aluminium in a T shape, with the stem of the T laying flat on top of the 2 locking tabs and bolted thru the tabs, so you just press down on the strip of ally and it pushes down both tabs at the same time. It wont work with your slide out bench tabs now in the way, but may be useful if you find that slide out bench doesnt support the weight well enough cos it does look a bit floppy when fully extended.
Looking forward to the walk thru!
Yeah I’ve seen those joining tabs. And I’m trying to figure out a way to adapt it to my setup.
The tables a whole lot more stable once it’s bolted down to the car. My sons 10kg and we’ve changed his nappy on that table a few times now and it doesn’t go anywhere.
Having said that I do have a trick up my sleeve for that exact thing. That’s all in the next video.
The fridge runners are rated too 227kg. 190kg at full extension so the runners are strong enough.
Think I'll be ripping out my Boab draws and drop slide now. Fantastic job 👌🏼
Excellent build!! Definitely giving this a go for my next rig.
Haha. Glad ya found it helpful.
Awesome video mate, cheers. Just one thing frictional force is independent from the surface area. However, agree its still good idea to cut the Teflon strips down to not use as much material.
I’m about to build an entire storage and bed system in my explorer and just read the entire drifts website. I personally found it extremely demeaning and while they say their cheap 1500$+ for just drawers and maybe a shift table system is unbearBle for someone on the pension. So thank you for sharing a few pro tips with us all. Super clean. Love your work.
This is the first time I've watched one of your videos, to say the least I have subscribed now. It was just so informative and easy to watch. No bull thrown in, just the how and why.
I look forward to scrolling through your channel.
Amazing setup, expert craftmanship!
Thanks mate.
Was a cabinet making hand from my teens to mid 20s, made a world of difference when it came to making stuff for my car, biggest thing was the confidence to use tools
Confidence with tools is half the battle really.
Loved the level of detail. Really helps! Cheers
Glad it helps out buddy.
Bloody great vid mate - helpful hints, good humor....bloody rippa!
Hahah. I do try.
I see your watching a few of my other vids too. ( IVF vid ).
Hope ya like the rest of the channel buddy.
Mate, happy for you. They worked out just peeeerrrrfect.😅💯👌🤙🤙
Hahaha. Thanks buddy.
Yeah I’m stoked with them.
I’m a little jealous of the tools at your disposal mate. Great build turned out smiko
Hahaha. Yeah I’ve got an advantage with that up my sleeve 😂
You have done a great job, not sure what the fuss is with the drifta fan boys. We are talking about a plywood box with butt joints & covered in marine carpet. Teflon strips that have been used in the woodworking industry for 30 plus yrs.
Yeah some of the drifta fan club have chewed me out a bit. Even got a msg direct from Luke telling me to take the video down 😆
no dovetail joints and mortice bloc ...
Very nice indeed, with mine I also have the table under the fridge slide and it has a single square telescopic that when swung up to put away has a magnet under table to hold it, also I put in the gulwings to get nice access
Awesome job to you 👍
great looking draws love the calendar in the back
😂. That was a client i done a job for too. 👌👌
Big job mate, came up a treat! Love that roller. Well done thanks for the up ;)
Thanks buddy. Yeah was some time put into it that’s fir sure
@@Australian4x4Adventures looks the biz. Give us a shout anytime you're in Brissie!
Perfect timing Steve, just planning my own build as well and your vid will help a lot. Damn though I wish I had your "shed"! Great video!
😂. Yeah it makes life easy for little projects like this that’s for sure.
That's bloody awesome mate, very well done.
Thanks mate.
Nice work!! They look great!
Thanks buddy.
This video made a follower out of me all the way from Colorado, USA. Appreciate the effort and edits.
You’re more than welcome. Hopefully it helped you out.
Loved the vid, borrowed some ideas, built my own drawer and slide setup, just before Easter. !@!@# lockdown and haven't had a good chance to really test 'em out. Thanks for the inspiration! used strips of Dotmar polystone 7000 UHMWPE and with the money I saved compared to the commercial setups, bought a stainless water tank for in between rear seat and the drawer.
Hey Christian, how many mm’s were your strips ?
Great vid mate! Super informative 👌🏼
Thanks mate.
It came up pretty good.
Great job! Thanks for making this vid.
You’re welcome buddy
Yeah I really like this. That is really neat. Good job
Excellent job Steve, PERFECT 👌
I know I am but what about the drawers 😂
@@Australian4x4Adventures hahahaaaaa nailed it
Fantastic build mate . That’s better than a bought one in my opinion. Bloody well done 👍🍻
Hahaha. Well I like to think I do an alright job.
Next weeks vid has all the real detail in it and showing everyone the finished product.
Thanks for the tips mate!
You’re welcome.
Nice job mate .. very well put together
Thanks buddy. 👍
Excellent video, not using sliders will give me the extra centimeters I need for my build. Thanks for the inspiration. One question though (might have missed it in the translation) how do you stop the drawers from being pulled out fully, crashing to the floor? Just be careful, or is there a stopper?
Brilliant!!!! im inspired legend👍👍👍👍👍
Love it.
Show me the finished job when ya done. 👍👍
Killed it mate when can I place a order hahaha top vid bud keep them coming cant wait for next episode
Hahaha. Thanks buddy.
Run through vid comes today at 4.
Great video. i am going to make my own now.
You actually did drifta a favor for people who dont want to make their own. Some coments here think you are taking business off them but really you are advertising their design. How many videos i see of other 4x4 you tube people showing their drifta draws and how they are made are kind of doing the same thing.
Keep up the good work.
Haha. Thanks buddy. I think I’m helping them as well.
Maybe someone should tell Luke from drifta that and maybe he will stop sending me msgs telling me to take my video down or else.
I’ll do it lol
😂
Another great video Steve! Good to see you go with a layout I am looking at for my own 200. PS. Would be great to get my hands on a "jumper"! 😃👍
Hahaha. It works a treat having had it in the 200 for about a month now.
Send me a msg on insta or Facebook and we can sort out a jumper.
That came up amazing.
Thanks buddy.
Great video thanks for the ideas
35 years in the building trade I will let you in on a secret , Teflon is designed so that nothing sticks to it , silicone , max bond , sika , all might be good but 12 months it won’t be attached
I found boat runners at Bcf
1500 long $20
It has a recess in it so it can be screwed
Keep up the great work
I’ve got a brilliant silicone adhesive that will stick anything to anything - guaranteed.
It would stick those Teflon runners, with the drawers, full of camping gear, upside to the ceiling of his factory unit 😉👍
@@4WheelingInNSW Please tell? 😁
Mate not that I’m making drawers but that was a fantastic video probably one of the best I’ve seen well done
Thanks buddy. It turned out pretty good in the end.
Thanks for watching.
Great job, very smooth mate
Thanks buddy.
Fantasitc how to. Your modesty is breathtaking... :)
Great video mate. That looks shmick! Nice one
Thanks mate. I’m pretty happy with them.
Nice work & great design my friend. 👌🏼
Thanks mate.
New business on the side, great vid 👍
😂. Well with uncle Dan shutting me down I may have too soon.
awesome job. love it.
Well done mate. Very clever. 👍
Thanks buddy.
I’m happy with them
Thumbs up mate what an awesome set up 😎👍🤙
Thanks buddy.
Next episode runs through the finished product
Not bad mate, from a fellow cabinetmaker. Just in the design process of my second set of drawers but using an upright fridge, twin stacked drawers next to that and will try and incorporate a bit more table space, a 55L water tank, the travel buddy and stove and also an extra folding table, all this in the back of my FJ cruiser (using runners - I like the full extension) 😬 initial mockup looks good... 🤞🏻
My main goal was weight reduction. So I wanted to give the Teflon a go.
If it’s crap in a few years I’ll just remake the drawers and use runners.
Looks mint. I have been planning pretty much the same thing. I have the slides sourced just need to get all the funds together to do it in one go
Vid coming out this Friday showing my complete costings of what I used for this build.
Should be helpful for ya.
Great job and well instructed video - totally agree with ‘over engineering ’ - my father and I have had many Saturday afternoon dinner table conversations about the merits of German and Japanese philosophies for over engineering despite them both losing world wars and have been the benchmark to which standards are held - I always glue, nail and screw for this very reason if not to do a good job - just starting new aluminium canopy fit out - GM and Ford manufacturing disappeared in Aus because of their ‘she’ll be right’ attitude’ - John in SA
Great job gave me some ideas for my trailer build.
Glad it could help mate.
Rippa video mate nice work, can't wait to see the run down video and see you fill them with water!
Nice job very neat and very informative.
😂. Bloody water.
Guess I’m ganna have to do it now arnt I
@@Australian4x4Adventures water storage can use the water bladder, there is a manufacturer in Melbourne. can put 90l I guess behind the gap of the second row.
I got mine 75l for the Prado, fit nice and tight between the drawers and second row.
Nice mate thanks for sharing.
No dramas at all. Hope it helps.
Well done mate, looking at doing a similar thing in the near future for myself and my young fella. Cheers for all the good info, subscribed and liked!
Thanks mate.
Good luck with it all.
I’m sure you’ll smash it out.
Looks top notch 👌.
I can see a nice little side business on the cards$$$
😂. I’ve had a few ppl ask me already.
That was great.Thankyou
No dramas at all. Glad it could help hopefully.
Nice mate 🤙🤙
great video mate, calendars too!!!
Hahahaha. My fav
Awesome video mate! Gained another sub 👍🏻
Great video, have watched it a few times while designing ones for our canopy. What kind of clearance did you allow for the height/width of the drawers? Just don't want them too tight or sloppy😂
Hi, great vid! Has inspired me to give it a go for my 80. Being a total novice, do you perhaps have your measurements for this build? Just interested to see how you measured out the drawers etc. to accommodate the teflon strips etc.
Hey mate. Nah I kinda done most of it on the fly and just guessed a lot of the gaps that would be required.
I think from memory it was a 6mm gap on all 4 sides of the drawers. Keeping in mind I mounted the Teflon on the sides as well to stop it from rattling side to side.
Great job good when you got the tools do the job.
Good watch! Thanks for that
Hope it helps.
love it great job
Thanks mate.
Yeah Drifta draws are awesome, had some in my last car but couldn’t reuse them in my new car, we also had a water tank at the back of it too. Not sure how he does it unseen, they fitted immaculate with water tank and cargo barrier. Legends, totally agree can never go over board with adhesion and good screws, quality wood too don’t get cheap stuff it will decay too quick.
Bloody ripper job. And ripper tips for us that want to do our own drtfta style set up. Thanks mate!
Love the calendars in the background 😉. Any chance you can share where u got the slides from.
Great video and very detailed. Appreciate if you can put up a video on how to remove the rear quarter panel plastic too.
I did put that up on my insta story a while ago.
I think there are a few videos out there showing it on RUclips.
this came out a little late. finished building my own drawers about 2 weeks ago and this definitely would've helped
Ahhh Bugga sorry buddy.
I dragged my feet about getting this one edited because I’ve been busy with some other stuff.
@@Australian4x4Adventures nah its an awesome video mate. definitely will be useful next time round
Fantastic build and well explained. Did you notice much weight difference between the old and new setup? I want to do a similar project but for the ute tray to incorporate smooth opening of the fridge and battery behind, the other side will be open top drawer at this stage. Also curious on estimated materials cost for the build, hopefully covered next week 😁 cheers 🍻🍻
Hey buddy.
Thanks for the comment
And yea. All those questions will be answered in next weeks vid.
Awesome video!!
Did you treat or would you treat the draws with any varnish on the inside for durability ?
Great work, great videos! Thanks for all the tips too. Starting mine next week - is it 15mm ply throughout or 15mm base with 12mm for the rest? Cheers!
Hey buddy.
15mm ply top and bottom of the main unit and 12mm for everything else.
@@Australian4x4Adventures Awesome - thx!
Good work !!
Thanks mate.
Really well done, now just to figure out how to make something like that fit into a WK2 Grand Cherokee.
Just measure twice cut once 😂
The nail gun makes it go together so easy 😂 I'll need one next time I rebuild
Gotta love a good nail gun.
I was watching some drifta videos and it looks like they have a spring pin mounted on the back of the drawer to prevent it from coming out fully unless its manually unlatched. Did you do this too? I want to add it to mine but I wasnt sure what type of latch they used or how it was installed
Very professional job, fit and finish. Would you consider using formply? I’m planning to use formply since I don’t have to paint it and if it does end up rubbing on itself it should have less friction than regular ply. I just don’t see many diy setups use formply so thought there might be an obvious reason I’m missing!
Great looking drawers and well made - looking forward to making a set myself. Curious to know though where you got the metal badge made up for the drawers - would love to personalise my own.
Hey Steve, does your fridge bolt into your slide from the bottom ? Also awesome setup. Can't wait to get my custom setup done in December.
Hey mate.
Yeah I found some longer bolts to go through the fridge slide and into the feet of the fridge.
Love it mate thanks for the guidance, I’m a 4th year carpenter attempting my current rear drawer set up. Didn’t really think to bother with Teflon along the sides but I might have to see if I can get some 3mm thick or something for it, and halve the width of my strips on the bottom as you say less friction with less surface area and currently mine are 40mm wide strips. Maybe just 20mm will do. What type of paint did you use to wouldn’t need to be anything special right?
Nothing special just some one coat black.
Forget about Teflon on the side and just wax them with some normal candle wax. I use it on my hand planes and normal drawers and timber window sashes all the time, you won’t believe the difference it makes.
@@cooperken11 only slapped teflon either side from leftovers to prevent the drawers from moving side to side when driving
love the video Steven!
thinking of using teflon or something similar in my build, was wondering how wide you ran your strips cheers
They were 12mm wide and pretty much full length of the drawer.
Great work and very informative....have a canopy coming so the construction help was great. Love the music ..In a nice way fits the laid back approach you have...look forward to the next vid...with slightly more specifics...looks like few peeps will be ordering from Kilsyth. May try a more affordable option first eg yellow tongue or equivalent then upgrade if needs be ..thx again ...as an aside a few yanks put what looks like a thin sheet of masonite shiny side up at the cabinet base and shiny side down on the drawer base as the slider....however slider decrease surface area I reckon.....
Hahaha. Yeah seems like a few ppl will be ordering from the amount of ppl asking.
Yeah next weeks vid will have heaps more finer details.
