As a lifelong bowler, I have to say this entire film made a mockery of my beloved sport. Bill Murray ridiculed all of the PBA bowlers I grew up watching on Saturday afternoons. This entire film was a slap in the face of bowlers everywhere. And it was GLORIOUS.
It really nailed that early 80s network bowling phenomena. The guys were all either balding, had a paunch, or had a paunch and were balding. Mark Roth, Pete Wbber and Marshall Holman would never be confused for triathletes
I can clearly remember being 7 years old and watching this with my dad on the couch. My dad was cracking up the whole time, but I guess I thought it was a real sports broadcast at the time. Like it was a real bowling event on ESPN and not a comedy movie. And when Erne held up his bowling ball to the crowd with his comb-over flopping in the wind and the crowd was going wild; I thought that was really how it was.
Cj M He’s talking about the crowd reaction. They knew for the film he was supposed to bowl three strikes in a row and he actually did. At least he did according to the director and cast mates.
Invisible_Mango lol that annoying condescending laughing face. That’s almost as bad (or maybe worse) than the condescending “......”s people add, like as if they can just barrrrelllly even be bothered to correct you. “Wow..... ughh.... *sigh* no, actually 9/11 was _______ and blah blah blah..........., can’t believe you don’t know that.....” I forgot, saying *sigh* is up there too. Anyone that does and of that condescending shit in their comments, especially when they’re wrong, need to pissed on from someone on top of a tall building
I love that Murray and Harrelson buried the hatchet and became good friends while playing the movie Zombieland. Harrelsons reaction to Murray is genuine as hell I think. Hahahah
I wonder if it was scripted whether or not big ern should win in the end or if the director was like "okay if you can bowl three strikes in a row with no editing then we'll go with the ending where big ern wins."
The back-to-back Brooklyn strikes to win is just the icing on the cake, it really helps sell the absolute level of disgust on display. I was laughing my ass off at Bill and just absolutely crushed by the absurdity at the same time.
The truth is that the bullies usually become the school counselors and Human Resource and the backstabbers usually become popular. It's very rare that a good person wins at anything. I liked how this movie was honest about that. What we see as redemption, isn't what we always get, but there is always a reason to try.
Yeah but later, we find out that the mobsters who attack Roy then go after Ernie, though we don’t get to see the outcome. It would be satisfying to see Big Ern in a body cast and then being told his treatment, surgery and body reconstruction will cost close to $1M. Ern is upset because there goes all his prize money. The doctor says “Well, then it’s a good thing you won it.” Ern says next time he’ll just bowl for another million but doctor says “Oh I’m afraid your bowling days are over.” Kind giving Ern the same fate as Roy.
Chris Schenkel was the voice of the PBA for many years. Truly a legend. I wonder why they got a guy who looked like Nelson Burton Jr. instead of the real NB.
Sorry, but Pete Weber has the corner on that phrase, and had he thrown the ball, they would have been all on the right side of the headpin for real strikes. ;)
I disrupted the whole showing over and over with my laughing. I caught myself several times completely losing it in a silent theater… I had a friend who was there run up afterwards shouting “I knew that was you!!” What an experience😆👌
I smiled just as soon as the image appeared, happy times watching that. Everyone should have an extravagantly large off-line move/tv collection and 1 backup of said collection.
I got fortunate to watch this being filmed in my little town of beaver county in Pennsylvania 24 miles north of Pittsburgh and I didn't realize how big this movie would have gotten from beaver valley bowl an Jimmy maggs lanes in Baden Pennsylvania
Man, he caught a break on that second strike. It was a Brooklyn all the way and the messenger just barely took out the 10th pin. The last one could’ve easily wound up as a split, too. I’m glad he got that Turkey, though, cause his performance was SO good, comedically, that any cut or edit would’ve killed his momentum.
@@cpresto2 true, but I’m not, haha! I’m very familiar with “Brooklyns” cause I am guilty of getting them pretty often. Usually it’s because I’m using too much spin on the ball and there’s more oil on the lane than I’m used to.
One of my favorite movies. Filmed at all of the local alleys in my area. I have a set of pins signed by Bill and Woody that case from Rochester Bowl, and I’ll never sell them
But one of the most amazing feats as Murray actually got that Turkey the first 3 times he bowled this scene, it is all one take, his genuine amazement was awesome
I was just in Reno for thr National Tournament and i was thinking of this mo ie the entire time. I just wish i had the Rose Ball. Would have been perfect.
The director was planning to splice together various cuts to make it look like Murray bowled a turkey and have the audience cheer. But Murray, a very good bowler, made three consecutive strikes, and the audience reaction was spontaneous. They didn't need to be cued.
Didn't particularly love this movie but Bill Murray's hair at the end was absolutely hilarious. Has lifetime bowlers we are all a special breed and I have to see the humor in that movie
This whole time I thought Roy won the tournament wtf ???? I’m so baffled by this ending I haven’t seen the movie since I was little and I swear I remember Roy winning
I honestly was surprised at that twist when I first watched it when I was a kid. Most stories would have had the hero having a big victory. But it ultimately taught me even heroes fail in movies and it doesn't necessarily mean they lost. I really felt like I grew up a bit after that.
That haircut always gets me rolling 🤣🤣. In what about Bob? Richard Dreyfus said maybe Bill Murray's character left his wife because he loved Niel Diamond and he turns it around saying that he didn't leave her but she left him. He said there's two kinds of people in the world those who love Niel and those who don't, well there's only two kinds of people in the world, those who love Bill Murray and those who don't!!

I was about to say YOU DICK for a second there
Well put. Murray is absolutely superb in this film.

It wasn't? 🤥
This is what I'm going to tell my kids.
For those who don't know, Bill Murray actually bowled these three strikes in a row and his reactions are fully genuine. Absolutely amazing.
Vince Cullotta he bowled the strikes, but I doubt they were in a row, and his reactions aren't genuine. He's acting 😂
It probably took them literally all day to film this scene. It's not one-take. It's hours of footage, edited together 😂
Cj M He’s talking about the crowd reaction. They knew for the film he was supposed to bowl three strikes in a row and he actually did. At least he did according to the director and cast mates.

You can tell by Harrelson’s face expressions and reaction, borderline smirking

But itz kinna perfekt tho....
I mean it *IS* a comedy, and he *IS* Bill Murray, tryna B a douche!!

If trump could bowl

Ernie McCracken is definitely one of the funniest movie antagonists xD
And I still stand by this claim in 2024 lmao
And pure evil too
@@TurtleMan99 bro, Shooter McGavin is so freaking hilarious xD

At 1:58 he almost lost it when Bill Murray was dancing in circles on the floor. It's probably why he closed his eyes.
100% you can see him fighting a smile lol can't blame him
Yep!
damn its a shame they dont make movies like this anymore
Too many people/groups would be offended
The 90s was the best era for comedy movies :D
In my opinion that’s not true because I’m still a fan of bowling
And movies that have bowling
You’re not kidding

They were never enemies? Great classic american actors

The comb over is insane lol.
like a giant spider sitting on his head
Battle of the combovers
This movie is so good. Big Ern is one of the greatest characters of all time!
bill murray actually bowled 3 consecutive strikes at the end no out takes or editing.
To be fair, he looks like a bowler. He was built to bowl. Some people have it, and others don’t.
He literally threw a Brooklyn and got lucky on the messenger lol
