I agree 100%. I was struggling with turning for 2 days and after watching this video and visualising this as explained I managed to learn it in an hour. Thanks a lot!!!
Tommie, I have been watching your videos for a week up till today, which was my first day on any slope, ski or snowboard. I chose to stick to snowboarding, and your videos made the difference. Your turning mechanics and tutorials MADE THE DIFFERENCE for me. I picked it up like a natural and was controlling my speed and turning and even switching stance with ease. I even got the confidence up to hit a few bunny jumps. I had such a blast and I think I just found a new passion. Thank you so much!!!
I'm a life long snowboarder, but a new instructor/coach. These videos are so great for vocalizing what I know intuitively and are going to be a great resource to help me teach people how to slide on snow safely.
Excellent video. I started as a skier. Late in life, a good snowboard instructor said he knew how to "fix" that problem. :) Skiers know uphill, downhill and fall line. None of this heel-side toe-side nonsense. Who can possibly keep track? Skiers rotate shoulders to face the fall line, and the weight is always on the bottom ski...or shifting to a new bottom ski when turning. My snowboard instructor's advice was independent of toe side or heel side. Either way, lean slightly forward (toward the nose of the board) as Tommie has said. Because you are dug in on the upper edge (whether heel or toe) the front of the board will naturally flex in a way that initiates a turn down the mountain. Be patient. Don't panic with the added speed. Keep looking forward/where you want to go. Don't look down at your board and the tiny distance that separates its downhill edge and the snow...which keeps you from falling downhill (face-forward if you're trying to be heel side and screw up or skull forward if you're trying to be toe side and screw up...hurts either way). Ride out the turn and tilt up the mountain a bit to establish the new edge. This leaning forward method has worked well on slopes that are not too flat, and more or less naturally I have learned to turn faster and where I want (priorities 1 and 2: avoid trees and moguls). Tommie has added nice ways to speed the turns along with that open-the-door and bug-squashing guidance. Maybe I can use that to turn still faster. As a holdover from skiing, I tried up-unweighting (with a corresponding shift of weight towards the nose of the board). I think this works too. Maybe there's a Tommie video on that...have seen others. Anyway, great video. Hopes this helps others who learned to ski first.
At first i was like why is Tommie talking so fast?!? But then i realized he adds so many little verbal details that there is no question what needs to happen-and if he spoke slowly it would not sync with the video. Ive watched 100 of these beginner videos and by far these are the best!! Thanks dude!!
really pleased I found the channel. As a beginner with a total of 2 weeks on the mountain these tutorials are really easy to follow. Super clear footage too.
Thanks SO much! I've watched a lot of videos on this and have been having a really hard time transitioning from j turns to connecting the turns and making them S turns. Your breakdown of the steps, frequent examples, showings the shapes with your hands, and little tips here and there have really helped me finally understand it! Phenomenal stuff! You're a great teacher
It’s not every day that I hear someone say “going to change the game” and have it actually change the game. The “Squishing the Bug” technique has really improved my riding. Thanks!
Not only do you rip! but you are also an excellent teacher. I'm well seasoned and clicked this video for reflection, and you nailed it. Folk's, this guy got it down to an easy science 😎👍
Thanks for the tips! I went snowboarding for the second time this past weekend (first time in over 10 years) and was able to learn the heel and toe J turns in both directions in one day because I remembered opening the door, squishing the bug and being patient going down the fall line.
I love boarding. Started this weekend at 30, and it was actually super sick because I did my homework and watched you and others plus, as I mentioned, the skateboarding/ripsticking background
Ive watched a lot of your videos now tommie. Im 32 and only started snowboarding a couple of years ago. Ive only had 2 weeks proper on the mountain because i live in england and it sucks for snow and landscape so i have to get on a plane to board for real. Your videos have been amazing not just for learning. But actually understanding what is happening through my movements. Ive had a week on snow this past month and thanks to your videos my confidence and ability has improved x10. Hopefully going to huez in france in 2022. Killing it bro ✌ so much love for your knowledge and insight.
Been practicing a few weeks but the turn is always super hard. Im gonna try this today! Too bad even the easiest route in our hill is very steep and sometimes super icy.
You did a great job explaining all of the fundamentals in this video. I had my first experience snowboarding in Breckenridge two weeks ago and it went absolutely great! Obviously I’m going to be studying snowboarding a lot over the summer in the fall, but I can’t wait to get out there next season. Thanks again, cheers!
TOMMIE ! bro , my friends told me to squish the bug too ! but i was never squishing with my knee bro !! i was squishing by driving my heel into my board to try and get more pressure on the balls of my feet. really excited to get back on the mountain and try this. feel like this is going to be a gaming changing tip for me. thank you
Thank you, Tommie! I followed your knee steering and bug-squeezing tips to practice riding switch! It worked so well! I have finally taken my switch riding to a steeper green while keeping my center of mass between my feet! Thank you! 🙏🏻

Excellent visualization, and I'll remember it for next time I go out!

So I was talking to an instructor a few weeks back after riding again for the first time in about 6 years. He explained it to me that you’re basically “twisting the board”. I’m uncomfortable on toe side after catching heel edge way too many times and he explained to me “weight on the lead leg, twist the lead foot to toe side and twist the trail foot in the heel-side direction to kick the back of the board out.” I haven’t seen any videos explain it like that and I’m curious if you, or anyone else on here agrees?
Thank you sooo much for this video! I watched 2 times before going to practice it! It was a game changing for me. I was struggling w the toes side turns forever. My boyfriend explained in a total different way n I couldn't get it! Your way It's much easier to understand n doing! Thank you a million!
Thank you, thank you thank you so much for making this video. I’ve been struggling with switching from Tide to Heelside and I’m goofy footed and I keep trying to watch other snowboarders switch and I just could not understand but the knee steering and the weight distribution makes so much sense. I’m literally on my way up to the mountain now so let’s see how it goes😂

Just discovered your vid. Finally, an instructional video by someone who has good form! Any suggestions for transitioning to switch when you've been riding for years? The fear of beginner falling is real.
i m a beginner. is it always we will keep the left leg in the front and practice or else we should also try with right leg too.? sometimes if i am in the edge of the hill i m afraid to do the turn and doing falling leaf and i am not comfortable with the right leg in the front. give me some tips to fix this fear. Thanks. @Tommie
Great video. Well broken down. The video clips of your mogul riding are excellent! First-class down unweighted turns with beautiful smooth execution. Would you consider doing a video on Advanced turns riding steeps and riding Moguls?
Thanks for the great info. I have a question my wife got my a powder board because it was one of the few that was big enough for my 6ft 2in 270lb frame with 11.5 boots. I have only been 4 times. Where I can go doesn't have any powder should I get an all mountain board to learn on or is there not much of a difference. Unfortunately the slope doesn't rent boards in my size. 167cm 258mm wide.
I have gone snowboarding 3 times now. I made my biggest improvements this last time- I switched my lead foot. Many "tests" would say im goofy. Right first first but I just couldn't do toe side turns/tilts or any transitions to straight or heel. But go left foot first and boom. I am making it down slow but all the way toe and heel.
Awesome video thanx. I’m teaching my 9 year Old hos to snowboard. She tend to make the end of her j-turns into an accidental 180. Hos do we prevent this?
very helpful! Thank you so much! When you are on flatter terrain and not trying to lose any speed, could you just not edge at all? Or is it too easy to trip like that?
My instructors in Bulgaria advised that’s it’s good to thrust the hips forward and create a banana-like stance in your body when facing directly up (board horizontal to the slope) or down ( when board horizontal to slope) as it spreads the body load much better and takes pressure off of your ankles/calf muscles.) is this correct?
My instructor had my group focusing on changing our lead foot multiple times. Maybe necessary for a first day snowboarder but it never let me focus on my complete turns...it seems 90% of snowboarding (for a beginner) is lead foot forward even with turning. Hopefully your tips will smooth things out for me.
Went to the mountain and really struggled with this. Next time I go I will definitely need to spend a few seconds going down the hill before I start the turn. I kept trying to go from heel side to toe side without gaining any speed, so on flatter terrain I kept falling over, and on steeper terrain I was so scared.
This helps for sure, I just can't seem transition fast enough and often enough (I end up going way faster than I want to by the time I finish the turn, and end up rocketing from one side of the hill to the other before I can initiate the next turn).
Minor nitpick: saying to stack “Shoulders, hips, & knees” isn’t exactly right, as that would force people to lock their knees. Hips and knees can’t stack with legs bent.
