I'm a 55 year old guy who's two years into snowboarding and just starting boxes and kickers. What scares me the most is getting injured and not being able to work - I've already broken one rib and almost broken my tailbone so I know injuries can happen and injury for me = no income. That's scary.
Im in my 30’s and i feel the same way. But i dont do anything i can’t visualize myself doing, or not comfortable that day. As Tommie says, progression and taking small steps. Eventually, you will stomp that trick you always wanted to do. Good luck!
At the age you are worried about injuries and you are a beginner I wouldn’t push to far into jumps when there is an infinite arsenal of flatland to learn. Some of the people telling you are being rude but You can definitely snowboard into senior years but learning jumps is just doing to much
Your tip about body position changing with fear and affecting the success of a trick is actually genius...never thought about it like that! Thanks Tommie!
Here's one more tip, how to get rid if fear. Never look down to your board, focus on smth in front. It helps to keep the right body position on a feature/jump
Yeah but that can also be un safe like when your about to go onto a feature or off a jump you wanna look at your board and make sure you know when to Ollie off a jump or onto a feature and on a rail it’ll help you focus on staying on longer if you look at your board
YES!! Fear is the hardest part about snowboarding. Or another way too think of it is trust. I talk to myself while riding and constantly saying “trust jordan trust” and then I control myself and continue riding!
For me, warming up with doing tricks I know I can stomp helps put me in the right mindset to try something new. Sometimes it takes 1 run down, sometimes a few. Also big jumps still scare me, I’m not brave enough to try, so I don’t. But even smaller jumps can be scary, and just rolling off them gives you a boost on how comfortable you’ll be when trying a new trick
I have lots of fear because I’m old! 😂 But seriously, this will help a lot! I practiced riding switch for 10 runs today from what you taught me (front foot-squish the big, open the door) at the Keystone cafe with Johnathan, Sean, and Shayan! Helped sooo much!!! Thanks for being a boss and teaching us!!!
Josh Archer I’m much older then you and just learning switch. I skate with my switch foot (really hard) and ride switch 90% of the time for 1/2 season. Now I feel like my switch is almost as good as regular. It a numbers game. The more you can add the numbers the sooner you will get it. You can do it!!!!!!👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👏👏👏👏🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Hey, Tommie. I’m from Brazil and I just got home after a trip to a mountain in Argentina. Your tips absolutely changed the way I connect my turns. Before watching this video I wasn’t able to do toeside turns and now I’m pretty confident in doing them. Thanks from Brazil
I learned how to snowboard age 21 it was scary and fun all rolled in to one. ...nothing more scary than hitting a kinked rail....or your first big kicker..😲😲😲 BUT...... I LOVE SNOWBOARDING 😎
I started snowboarding when I was 22 in 1991 for about 2 years then I moved to Hong Kong where there's no snow so every year I would go to Japan to snowboard for a week or so. It's hard to improve when you don't have a lot of time on snow and then 10 years ago I stopped snowboarding completely due to family issues. Now I move back to Canada and start snowboarding again. I'm 52 now...I feel like I have missed all those years but I want to improve my skills and try new tricks. It's like my mind is still in my 20's wanna try all these tricks but my body is telling me no! I set my goal to do a 360 off a small jump by taking it one step at a time...maybe an indy grab first, a shifty, then a 180, and finally a 360! Thank you Tommie for putting up so many helpful videos!
I got some impact pants today. And I usually have wrist protectors on, too. I think some protective gear can reduce fear because falling hurts a bit less 😅 I also check the snow on my first run just so I know it's not too icy. And I always get advice from people who are much more experienced 😸
Super on point!! When I hit jumps, the speed to send over the gap initially scares me a lot. Riding the roller like you would hit the jump and getting used to the angle and speed of the landing calms the nerves a ton.
What also helped me a lot is to listen to music when it's possible because you don't think about riding that much and just do it. And also when you want to try something new count to 3 and then just do it and don't overthink it
Fear is the worst ! Well, for learning stuff it is. I am a beginner-intermediate rider and was feeling great, I was nailing my turns and finally enjoying riding and then I fell 2 times and that set me back, waaay back. Now I can’t do my toe turns quick, I am yelling at my self in my head “bend your stupid knees!!!” But my legs don’t move, I know my body position has changed and I am riding in a defensive way, which is not good. I am not giving up, I am 42 by the way, not a youngster anymore :-D The winter hasn’t been to kind to us so far this year, I need to get out and practice that “squishing the bug” over and over haha Thanks! Love your videos!
i know this may seem weird but dont think about it just today i was wanting to try a switch back 540 off a smaller jump and i had done a few 3s off that jump and the one time going into the jump i was half way up the kicker when i decided i was trying it that run and it was the cleanest 540 i have ever landed and i have done hundreds of front 540s but never a switch back 5 or a cab 5 or even a reg back 5 if you keep your mind off it you dont have a fear of it
Honestly, peer pressure. The largest steps forward I’ve taken have been with a group of guys and seeing dudes who are clearly not as good as me (at least… in my mind… 🤦🏻♂️) going over larger jumps no problem. Suddenly, I found the courage… 🙃 And then had a great day. 🤙🏻
Tommie your the man! Love your videos more than any other snowboard youtuber out there. Very educational and I'm stoked. Hopefully I see you on the MT. Sometime this year. Would love to meet you in person. Breck and keystone are my home mountains. So maybe I'll catch you up there one day. Keep on keeping on bro. Yeeeew!
I wrestled fear to the ground a couple of weeks ago and went on a jump. Cleared the knuckle but then gravity wrestled me to the ground, then concussion and pain embraced me.
Bro I needed this. I had a super bad shoulder dislocation that was out for 8+ hours last season. Its been a struggle. And humbling. But its made me want to focus on the essentials of riding. My goal is getting my Level 2 Casi this season so I can chase the dream and work and ride overseas.
I like to spook myself safely before trying something new that might scare me. Switch nosepresses are usually a good way to get me out of my comfort zone.
The talking points were super helpful! Could you break down a big scary trick like a backflip or big jumps or big rails using the tools you bring up? Breaking things down, building up, practicing and visualizing? I think that'd be mad useful
Go team snow ginger! Sick riding dude. Some other good advice is, if it's a particular feature that you're working with. Wait till its not packed, crowds never help with that sorta thing.
What I am most afraid of is a car crash getting to or from the place. The most dangerous part is from the house to the airport then the rental car lot to the lift. "Scenic driving" is vastly more dangerous than flying or snowboarding.
My last fear is getting caught borrowing rocks. There is back country snowboarding then there is using a snowboard as a tool to save time and energy after walking uphill with snowshoes and getting samples for the rock collection. And with that I will shut up.
@@tommiebennett My daily board is a YES The Greats.. I think its more of a fear thing, I feel I'm leaning back a bit, so my tail is just stuck. My riding is mid intermediate on everything, but steeper runs..
It's definitely more like jumping into the turn when you're going fast on a steep slope! I've caught nasty edges trying to make weak turns. Whiplash and concussion
Chris B hmm, You should think of your center of mass on your board and how you distribute your weight throughout your turns. Practice bringing your body to the board more as you begin your turn with more of and emphasis of your weight on your front leg. As you start to control that turn before the next one, put a little more weight on the back leg so your controlling the pressure being built up in the front of the board. it should help mellow things out as you get ready to do the same thing again for the next turn initiation.
Another tip is: you just don't care if your gonna fall or not, it happens get over it and move on hahahah. It has been working perfect for me evven when I want to take a jump i put my thoughts on nothing and just start moving
sometimes u look like youre dancing when you board lol but i can tell you really use your arms to manipulate your momentum and rotation and you look really controlled and confident
What really sucks is when your mind says it's ready for this trick and your body says not really, and you end up crashing hard. It's all mental. Positivity helps a lot as well.
I have stage fright. Like if I am by myself I am fairly confident and willing to try new things. If someone is expecting me to do something, I get nervous and just can't concentrate.
In in my resort there are a few small jumps let’s say 5 ft which I can do easy - there is also a jump with a steep landing but still the kicker is very small (easy for me) then there’s a 20 ft jump which I’m scared to do, I can send of the knuckle but the kicker is at least 5-6 ft any tips?
100 times off a jump means 100 times up the lift. I go to the park 25-30 a year with a total of about 10-12 lift rides each time I go and I’m still scared haha 😂
Okay RUclips.... That's a little creepy... I asked during your live Q&A about how you dealt with fear in learning new tricks and then this pops up in my recommended videos as the very first video... Despite that! Thank you TB!!
doesn't apply in all scenarios/tricks, but whenever I know I'm going to do a massive jump, I generally look a bit down and not so much at the jump so it feels less intimidating so there's no chance of last-second remorse by the time I'm in the air.

Are those the cartel bindings? If so how do you like them?
Noah Lucas I’m not a pro but I board park pretty heavy and I love my cartels. Lots of control for small input
What are those bindings? Look like Cartels
Tommie Bennett aren’t they quite stiff? You seem more like the park type of rider.
For visualization, do you picture your self doing it in first person, or do you imagine your someone else watching you do the trick (3rd person)?
For me when I visualize it's in 3rd person, but its a very close up shot like a follow cam haha.
