Hi! I have been working in vr on and off for the past month. (since I got my quest 3) though I've only edited a video in it once. Here are a few tips. 1. Instead of moving the screen closer to you, make it bigger, this means it will cover more space and get that clearer image, while not making you go cross-eyed. It should be much easier on your eyes. 2. The quest 3 as you said is super uncomfortable. The most comfortable strap by far is from bobo vr, and you can get batteries for it as well to extend battery life. 3. You had issues with extra monitors, obviously you are going to be faster with a more familiar setup. you can still use the extra monitors for e-mails, music, or maybe wherever you are uploading to so you can just drag the files over. Whatever works best for you. Personally, I work with 4 monitors so when I'm on my home setup with 1 monitor, it is totally worth it to me to throw on the headset whenever I have any work to do. I hope this helps, and I will definitely be watching for your future videos on this!
Watching Ben's edit a video about VR inside VR (Quest 3, no less!) is like diving into a modern-day 'chicken and egg' conundrum. It's a fascinating loop of reality and virtuality feeding into each other. This video is not just about experiencing VR; it's a layered journey where the process of creating the content becomes an integral part of the content itself. It's meta upon meta, a digital inception that blurs the lines between the creator, the creation, and the medium. Truly a mind-bending illustration of how technology is redefining the boundaries of our experiences and storytelling!
For sure! VR is one of those things that you have to see for yourself to fully ‘get’… then when you do, you realise it opens up a whole new world of possibilities & use cases 😁
were still a few years away from vr monitors, the headsets need to be way smaller and higher quality, and personally I think the most important aspect next to the screen resolution and sharpness is FOV
I really want to try this but while on my threadmill. Seeing as I have a quest 3 and threadmill already I won't need a walk pad and adjustable desk. I'd only be doing it for an hour each time just to get my steps in while also getting some work done
When tethered using the USB-C cable, was there any input lag? And any lag when editing in general? I saw another video of someone editing in Resolve and when making cuts he had a very noticable 2-3 sec delay but he was doing it wirelessly. Also just curious if you've still done any editing in MQ3 since then and how it's going as of now?
Another great video Ben! Well done. always informative, interesting & watchable. Not a wasted second (hope you found the bathroom!) ;o) I'm only just considering VR headset as I'm about to invest in a load of kit and insta 360 is on the wishlist. I was once extremely keen to get into 3D Worlds, like Second Life (where I was something of an addict for a long time) However, I've started to look at the insta 360 series and am very excited by that and can't wait to get one - so I have been wondering about using a VR headset for editing hyperlapses - not so much to build a virtual editing studio hanging in space, but to preview the 360 footage and pick my view angles/framing as I go along...can't quite wrap my head around how that might work here....I guess I am sort of thinking I'd like to be able to change my view angle of the insta 360 video simply by moving my head. (sorry, trying to work something out here, bear with me, thinking on the fly) I have to think about this, because there is this dichotomy of editing an object in a 3D World (such as, say a cube you're turning & stretching) where you want control of the Object AND your view of it - so you can look under the thing or see it from above or one side while you stretch that face...and, effectively, with hyperlapse - you're INSIDE a virtual view-sphere. (so to speak) I think I need to reflect on what I want here.... perhaps phase one is to edit the camera reels for view angle, THEN edit the video sequences like a normal editor (even if it is hanging in 3D space for you) I guess with VR headset, You're kind of creating a work environment like an Astronaut who doesn't put his tools down on a bench, but leaves them floating. I like that idea of virtual screens. I',m very used to leaving things hanging in mid air in SL, so I reckon I'd adapt readily to that concept, but I suspect they've not designed a video editor that takes advantage of this technology to its fullest extent. ... like yes 'tear-of-tabbies' for your tools, separate virtual screen for the playback and another for a nice LONG editing timeline and another for your tools and several with your various clips ready to drop into your timeline as if they were DVD's on your shelf.... There are a few things I thought I'd mention to you. One is the 3D connexion Space Mouse (or Space Navigator) it is a highly intuitive 6 axis 'joystick' that I can't live without for navigating & editing inside Virtual Worlds It is also useful, of course, for many other systems, especially 3D CAD/CAM software, but one place I love it is in Google Earth as I can fly around like my own personal easy-nav UFO, rather than my brain having to process up/down left/right by using arrow keys so it is, as I said, highly intuitive and natural to use. Wait... yeah... I got it!.... your view is your head... but the object you move with the joystick ... (kind of like I use the joystick in SL to control my view while I use the normal mouse to manipulate the object I am editing). Of course, I am also looking forward to the Apple Vision Pro coming out soon, so I am wondering if it's higher definition might be a better alternative to the Quest headset. (albeit pricey). I can't wait to combine insta 360 footage with VR goggles and the space mouse AND virtual worlds too. The other direction I was wondering about trying to go would be to create artificial 'props' & 'sets' in a 3D World/Editor and blend those with Real World clips (say, for example, to simulate mountains in the distance or perhaps floating 3D text titles or special effects. I've used the technique of green screen in Second Life - and I've seen examples of Augmented Reality that used Second Life to generate scenes. (Sorry, I keep mentioning Second Life, but it just happens to be one I know - there's no reason not to use another 3D editor) I mean, can you imagine having a UFO flying around, or SL Avatars wandering about Edinburgh, or other dreamscapes blended with your real video footage? The possibilities are outrageous. Hey - you could hang 'virtual' signs to help you find the bathroom within your Alpine virtual 'set'. :o) or simply put nice signage in an estate agent's tour.... perhaps switch to rooms with or without furniture - or virtual furniture the viewer could select themselves. I did once get involved in an early project where potential house purchasers were given access to 3D models of their new homes in SL so they could mess with colour schemes, etc and, effectively, customise their houses before they were even built in the real world. Another thing I was wondering if it would be possible to record in a virtual World in the same fashion as the insta pro works.... The only way I could figure it would be to actually create a primitive object and sit 2 avatars on it facing opposite directions and record the view of both - with each logged into two different computers (or run 2 instances of SL - which is easy - IF your computer doesn't melt) , but only one avatar acting as the 'pilot' to move both avatars around the 3D virtual world and record both screens and see if it is possible to shove the results into the insta editor and combine them into useable footage similar to what it produces from its own insta 360 camera. Sorry, I am waffling away here - (I don't have anyone to play with today ;o) but the insta 360 has me all excited and my brain is spinning in all kinds of directions here. I've been longing for this technology for 50 years, since I saw the first 3D art that, I think, took several days to render on a Kray II at a cost of something like two million dollars. With the Apple Vison Pro and the M3 chip coming and the insta 360 I'm all fired up. oh... Wow! what about a multi-user editing studio where people could work as a production team? .... I think I might need to go and change my pants. oh yes.... I just found "immersed"
Ben, thanks for sharing! I bought myself a Quest 3 as well after watching your video. Could you post a tutorial showing the workflow of making own 360 video to be watchable from the Quest 3? I know even with OneRS 1-inch 360 6k it will not be impressive but it is a good way to record a personal trip. I can be there again anytime I want. Thanks!
Hi Ben. I have recently bought a Quest 3 and tried to use Immersed on my iMac. I have a problem stopping with Immersed. My iMac stays greyed out en I have to resart to use my iMac again. Do you know a solution?
Wow. Very cool concept and comprehensive video. Seems like it's matured a lot over the years. While I'm not ready to get rid of my dual monitor setup, I can see this being really useful for smaller screen'd laptops like a macbook air. That is, assuming the air has enough RAM and gpu power to handle this. Thoughts? Would also you mind sharing what kind of RAM and GPU were you using with the mac mini setup? And did you experience any lagging or jittering? Thanks so much -H

Why would one use the cursor paired to the Quest 3, instead of remote viewing the cursor thats built into your macbook or connected to your pc and seeing that via the cloud? Is the lag too much for that to be effective? Or does the app not show the cursor from the computer itseld and force you to use one paired directly to the headset?
There is no ‘cloud’ in VR, nor a cursor. The cursor is on the computer screen. Much easier to edit videos with the computer’s mouse and keyboard anyway.
@@BenClaremontMaybe I'm misuderstanding, but if i pair my macbook pro to the website through the client (what i referred to as the cloud) for the headset to be able to stream the display, could I not just use the touchpad and keyboard on the macbook itself and see the cursor on the window in the Quest? Why would I have to get a separate mouse and keyboard and pair it directly to the headset, if the headset is streaming what's on the display of the machine I'm using, which already a mouse/cursor/keyboard built-in?
@@BenClaremontOk perfect. That's what I assumed, but every video shows people pairing keyboards and mice to the headset via bluetooth. I didnt' understand why you wouldnt just leave it paired to the computer
he didn't like the multi monitor setup, but then again, he put the other 2 in a really weird spot on the top diagonal. He might have had a better time with the monitor on the side lolz.
Don't get the elite battery strap. Seems to be problems with it breaking and not charging correctly. Seems like the third party ones are also having issues with charging correctly. I would wait a little bit till they get the battery issues worked out. I think it's just going to need a battery that can output more wattage. Either way go with a third party cuz they tend to have way better quality head straps.
Does this mean I could do work from my laptop on the beach? (and still be able to see everything clearly?) - I love working outside but the hardest part is finding shade from the sun / being able to see the screen without glare. Curious if this would solve it!?
Hi Ben, how can I upscale my 360 footage from the insta360 to get it sharper in Quest 3? Video AI told me they don´t support 360 videos...I wonder whether there is a short answer or whether it´s an idea to make a video upon...
Yes they do support 360 videos… also the camera settings you shoot with are just as important. I dive deep into that inside my 360 Video 101 course- link below
I have been thinking the same thing HAHA! I get distracted easily by stuff around me and often have to turn down the lights in my room to help me focus on the monitor.😐and I was wondering if working in VR can potentially help with that. I just don't know how realistic would it be with today's tech.. sometimes they still look a little gimmicky and hard to use for actually getting work done. Do you plan to give it a try?
That's hilarious. I was in the same public room using the Immersed App a few days ago wondering if someone in there was doing real work or just being curious as myself. Now watching your video I was just waiting to see my Avatar sitting next to you 🙂 Very good video about a really interesting new perspective.
I Think the pro is better suited for this kind of things, or get the BoboVR M3 Pro headstrap. I tried the sideloaded insta360 app on quest pro, works incredibly well! You can connect with the camera, export it and you can immidiately view the result. It's even better the on a phone.
Fair enough- to be honest I haven’t used the Pro in a very long time. Maybe I should. Would be great if Insta360 updated the app a bit more recently 👍🏻
I prefer to do it live without any headset, but thanks for the video anyway, you are always looking to improve your production and post-production skills
Halló Ben! I am Leandro from Argentina. I work at a film university in Buenos Aires. I am sending you this message with the following question: we are making a small advertising spot for the new film career that we are preparing here, to be presented next year. It is a 2-minute spot, in which we show the different formats that we are going to be using during the career. We filmed 95% of the spot, but we are missing some 360 images. And we wanted to know if we could use 3 images that you made, for that video. It is a video that will only appear on the school's own social networks. We wanted to know if we could use those 3 images of yours... Of course, placing you as their author in the video description. Is it possible? Thank you very much in advance, Leo
Thanks for doing this experiment. Very interesting results. So, it's not ready for editing yet, or presumably brain surgery either! I guess it did teach you to get a nice wooden box to set your monitor on to get it a bit higher for you.
Don't get the Elite strap, look into the BOBOVR 3. It's a halo strap which hangs the headset off your forehead instead of pushing against your face like the default and elite strap do which is way more comfortable
I: am sorry, I don't care how good Immersed program is, but I will still do my work without wearing a VR headset. There is less eye strain looking at a nice large 40-50 inch HD display, than looking at something virtual through VR lenses. Plus we have to keep on charging up the Quest 3 all the time to do business work. Also comfort level wearing something on your head all the time. No thanks to doing work through any AR/VR Headset. Maybe you can do it, but I cannot. I only use VR for entertainment and gaming and only for an hour or two. Note: I have done many hours/years doing gaming in VR and has worked great for me and enjoy the immerse feeling of being in the games. But to carry this same thing into doing business work is a bit too much for me. Bye!!

How is 360 editing now with insta360 x4?
No different to before
What i was hoping was u could edit in a 3d with a vr with no hassle of moving items around on spots u want it to.
Interesting. I get nauseous immediately with any headset but was curious to see if you liked it. Thanks for the share.
Fair enough- I don’t and had a great experience inside Quest 3 😁
in fusion you can watch 360° 3D with quest 2 or 3 over pcvr and watch around, but sad only in fusion
That's hilarious. I was in the same public room using the Immersed App a few days ago wondering if someone in there was doing real work or just being curious as myself. Now watching your video I was just waiting to see my Avatar sitting next to you 🙂 Very good video about a really interesting new perspective.
Haha cool- mine was a private room so I could keep the ‘set’ clear 😁
I Think the pro is better suited for this kind of things, or get the BoboVR M3 Pro headstrap. I tried the sideloaded insta360 app on quest pro, works incredibly well! You can connect with the camera, export it and you can immidiately view the result. It's even better the on a phone.
Fair enough- to be honest I haven’t used the Pro in a very long time. Maybe I should. Would be great if Insta360 updated the app a bit more recently 👍🏻
How to do that ?
I prefer to do it live without any headset, but thanks for the video anyway, you are always looking to improve your production and post-production skills
can you turn it into a 80-inch monitor?
Yes
Why not a bobovr strap
Will try it 👍🏻
@@BenClaremont The Bobo M3 makes it significantly comfier. You'll love it
How do u think the Passthrough is on a scale from 1 to 10?
I’d give it a 7, with previous headsets being about a 3-4.
@@BenClaremontoh thats enough for me, proly going 2 buy it.
Can you do this on the 2?
Yes 👍🏻
absolutely not
@@andrey.skripnikI just played around with it on the quest 2. Works fine. A little lag when using it but otherwise works.
Thank you very much in advance,
Leo
Hi Leo, sure no problem 👍🏻
😎🤝
The prospect of working in VR is exciting, but feel true productivity will require a device such as the impending Visor headset.
Good afternoon
I commend you for giving this a crack.
Is this a battery strap?
@@bilaltahir9978yeah
Can you map out an entire house and even a 2 story house to AR games?
Not sure- it’s worth a shot
well wirelessly u can do this from anywhere ....that can be a seprate video
What’s the name of software ? Is it virtual desk or something else ?
Immersed. I mentioned that in the video 😀
@@BenClaremont ohh my bad I didn’t heard it
too much light, eye strain?
Nope
Can you do it ? YES
.
.
Should you do ? NAAAH..
I tried it too 🤢🤢🤢
And?
Music bed is seriously annoying and pointless.
The meta quest 3 is held back by the software
How?
Bye!!
Bye!
Streams your computer, so NO IT CANT edit videos
Never said it could.
