I never even knew or thought of Kong or the film being associated with racism.

I always associated it as an allegory for Animal cruelty.

Here's how I see Kong depicted in this film: He's the last of his kind (I'm ignoring "Son of Kong" because there is only one thing that contradicts this movie, which I'm mentioning it right now), he's lonely, he constantly battles predators all day long and that kind of life does not grant him and kindness. All he ever wanted from Ann was to be friends with her, because he's lonely, and he even tried to give her a flower when they were at his lair (when he had his back turned right before the elasmosaurus fight, it wasn't meant for the audience to notice, but it was a nice motivation as to _why_ he had his back turned), and he's done nothing but protect her because she's the closest thing to a friend he'll ever get.
And, like any other animal, whenever Kong goes on a rampage is because he attacks only when either on the defensive or when he's aggravated. And as for the final scene, it was just simply that there was a giant monster ravaging the streets of New York and needed the means to put him down, and they wanted him off the building. Kong was in a world he was not familiar with and that led to his downfall. I've seen the movie a hundred times and never once have I ever noticed the racial element in it. The only reason some people accuse the movie as such (even though it's not even there as far as I'm concerned) is because of the time period it was made. As long as they say _"Bah it wuz mayd bahk in '33",_ that's all they're ever gonna need for an argument, which is dumb.

Here I go weighing in on an old video again. 🙄
If anything, King Kong speaks to the inhumane treatment of animals by early zoos and traveling circuses at the dawn of the 20th century. There’s no shortage of stories from those day of circus elephants being pushed to their limits and lashing out with murderous rage, which resulted in their termination. If I’m not mistaken, I believe Marion C. Cooper was partly inspired by a news story wherein a Komodo dragon was taken into captivity, escaped and had to be destroyed.
The reason Cooper chose a gorilla as his star was because he had a fascination with great apes. Plane and simple. Honestly, I doubt the movie would’ve worked if it were about an elephant, or a giant feline of the genus panthera, or a Komodo dragon.

THANK YOU! You said it perfectly. As a huge Kong fan, it aggravates me to no end when people scream racism.
I personally don't believe the theory of Kong being a metaphor for the slave trade, since Cooper loved gorillas and wanted to feature them in a movie for quite a long time before finally producing Kong, but I can get how some people might think it is. But like Cooper himself said when people try to dissect the movie for themes and such, "It says more about them than it does the movie."
    People are silly.

    • @omniviewer2115
      @omniviewer2115  7 лет назад +12

The slave trade metaphor is just one interpretation. Another could be the exploitation of foreign lands; a third is the irresponsibility of scientific exploration; a fourth is just a twist on the old Beauty and the Beast story.
Still, even when taken seriously, the slavery interpretation still doesn't equate to racism the way some would have us believe

You mean that video which popped up back in March before Skull Island was released? Yeah, that reignited the debate, but I remember articles on io9.com saying the same thing about Peter Jackson's remake. Trust me, this is nothing new.
However, you're right that the argument exists purely to generate controversy.

Omni Viewer i also recently watched one of your atomic roasts video review of godzilla vs king ghidorah, which i was surprised on how u viewed it as a over complicated kaiju story with a time travel plotline that just confuses everyone, will u do another one of thoses, but with the showa godzilla movies that were bad? Like godzilla vs the sea monster? or son of godzilla? Or even godzilla's revenge? Which many say is the absolute worst of the series.

I do have more Atomic Roasts in the works, including a couple of Godzilla movies. Of all my different videos, though, Atomic Roasts take the longest to make, hence why they are so infrequent. There are more coming, though, I promise.

  • @DuraTOAA

King Kong is racist?......what has the world come to? (kill me...)Everyone(almost) knows this is a movie about a sympathetic creature trying to get it on with a girl(jokes,am I right?),and eventually gets confused and ultimately dies because of his relationship with Ann.That is extremely tragic. Why people even do that, well,I don't know.

The portrayal of the natives was pretty racist due to being a 1933 film, but Kong himself is just part-animal-part man, not really a metaphor for anything but animals and nature. And ultimately even in the original it's tragic that Kong dies. It's not a direct finger-point at colonialism, but it's an admission that it destroys everything it touches.

    • @omniviewer2115

Yes and no. It's a Robostrux, which was the first attempt to bring Zoids Stateside way back in the Eighties. My Dad found it at a garage sale years ago, and we built it together without the instructions, which had been lost long ago. Good memories.
So, yes, it technically is a Zoid, but by a different name.

I don't see any racism in this movie or with king kong, i think it's Misperception, i still see this movie as a Masterpiece, one of the greatest movies of all time, and yet people criticize it for being racist. If kong was a human ( like it was mentioned in the video) would that change their perception or not?

Sympathetic characters can still propagate harmful stereotypes, and lots of Racists opposed Slavery. The natives are played by White people in Black face. The intent was not malicious but it still reflects the racist attitudes of the time.
