Hi Pete, Thanks man!👍🏻 Yes, this technique is way better than the knockdown texture spray cans by far. The knockdown sponge blends the texture perfectly. The spray cans? Not so much... Take care, -Paul
Gotta admit... The way shown in this video is the professional way to git r done. But, I've had great success with the spray can stuff on more than one occasion.
Those spray cans are awful. You get 2-3 good sprays, then the whole thing gunks up and is useless - even if you shake it upsidedown. This sponge is great!
Thanks for holding the camera over the results of your knockdown. I never seem to find texture sponges when I need them. I’ve had luck ripping chunks out of grout sponges using needle nose pliers. I think the trickiest part of texturing is matching the existing, which is always unique. Feathering is a good tip, thanks. Other variables are size of knockdown, and sometimes direction. In the end one has to play with it.
Came across your channel by accident but as a 30 yr. drywall finisher I have to say your videos are very informational to diyers as well as professionals that are not as experienced... Just an FYI.... Me and my partner had been using sea sponges that we pinched random spots out of for texture repair since the late 80's... But we did the patch as well as the texture with 10 minute lightweight quickset... Within an hour of starting patches we we're priming them
Thanks for putting the link in the comments. I found it and enjoyed the video. I have drywalled quite a bit in my years as a remodeler, but never had to do any knock down work until I moved to AZ.
Works great on small patches. Larger patches, not so much. Leaves a distinct line where edge of the template is. Knockdown texture sponge works so much better. Great idea for small patch.
That Zinsser 123 Primer you mentioned is great stuff. I recently built 2 bedrooms out of a 2 car garage, sprayed texture from a hopper, did a stucco-like knockdown and primed/sealed with the Zinsser 123. Perfect coverage and made painting so much easier and cheaper. Great video, thanks!
Wow! Great video! I hate knockdown, and can’t wait for it to go out of style.. but since my current house has knockdown, I’m going to try this technique for repairs on it! Best knockdown video on RUclips!
Thanks so much for this video! I had to patch a portion of my bathroom wall because the previous owners spackled a deep hole and it caved right in. I was able to match the knockdown using your directions. Super easy and once painted it looks great!
Josh, I’ve actually got a video coming out where I prime and paint this patch. I also show how to keep a repair from flashing. Stay tuned...👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
I wish I would have seen your video before I did the flick the compound off the brush technique which worked ok but yours method looks easier and more like the rest of the wall 👍
I hope you still put videos up or maybe you retired now either way I tried wat u showed me and worked and got paid for small patch thank you sir salute 🫡 🙏 ☺️ 👏 👍
I appreciate that Dave!👍🏻 So happy to hear my video could help you. That’s exactly why I make these videos. Just trying to give back. And when I get feedback like this, it truly inspires me. 🙏 Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Take care, -Paul
Punched two holes in my bedroom wall that are side-by-side... saw your patch video and thought it was great. Bigger hole has roughly a 6" diameter, smaller is 4" diameter. Nice stud in between the two, so I'm looking at cutting out a big ass hole about 10" x 9" in size. Lucky the design in this video matches my bedroom walls so I can have a much more accurate way to tackle this project. :P
Now do a whole house! LOL. Dude, I have a 2 story 2000 sq ft house & the knockdown texturing is on every wall & ceiling. Even inside the closets. I'm amazed by the patience it takes to do this. I'm just doing some small patch work with the texture SPRAY & it's making me crazy. Haha...
Awesome video Paul. I do have a question though, in the area that you patched did you skim coat it to match the height of the rest of the wall? Or did you just leave it as is & applied texture with the sponge & knock it down from there. The reason I'm asking is to find out if the patched area is higher than the rest of the wall when you run your hand over the area. I'm currently doing a patch job & was just wondering.
Great video huge problem bulding a home having it built and it was painted this week the knock down is alot higher than it was supposed to be and clumps that did not get knock down here and there anything i can do just sand down the big glob or ? Its everywhere. And in the corners its cracking and can see the drywall tape behind the knock down
I do apartment maintenance we use can spray knock down which is expensive..great way to DIY w practice..how long can u have that bucket of AP joint before it dries up?
Is this for exterior block wall? What about for interior drywall where paint brush textured and you have a repair on it? It’s not knockdown, it’s like an orange peel texture
I’m a new subscriber. I looked for vids on repairing walls with orange peel, but haven’t found any. I’ve only used spray cans to do the repairs. Did I miss a vid for orange peel repair? Thank you.
Straight from the container for a week defined look. Has a good consistency to hold form when floated. If you thin the mud, the texture will be much more fine but in my experience will need to set longer before being floated.
Hello Paul. Did you thin down the mud in this repair to a pancake batter consistency before you started? If doing a larger area is it best using the 3/4" Knapp roller method?
Hi G man, actually I barely thinned down the joint compound. I wanted it to stay thick, so it would match the existing knockdown texture. For a larger repair I would first use that 3/4" nap roller to get the joint compound on the wall. Then I would use the sponge to match the texture best.👍 I hope this helps. Let me know? Thanks so much watching and subscribing my friend! -Paul
I have a question! Last year my husband repaired a decent size hole in the wall and added texture (from the can) to match the rest of the wall, but unfortunately it doesn’t match. How do I go about fixing that? Sanding everything back down and redoing it? Or what would you maybe suggest?
Hi Paul ~ thanks for this video ~ you have saved my life!! As with bta16124, I have a question about wait time. My texture is Mediterranean knockdown (fairly thick), done professionally/blown on. I am having to patch around a door frame. Should I cover the entire area with the sponge or just do sporadic spots, and what is the wait time before knocking down? Any suggestions would be so appreciated 😊🙏🏼 Thank you!!
Would you do the same thing if you just wanted to apply knockdown texture to a flat wall or ceiling? or would you use something other than joint compound in that case? Would you need to put down sealant first?
Hi Mike, yes the knockdown texture sponge is perfect for smaller repairs too.👍🏻 Here’s a small ceiling repair I used it on: ruclips.net/video/_LFSOfpcmQk/видео.html I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Unfortunately for me, it's hard to tell without painting it and looking at it altogether. I tried the sponge method and it didn't work out that great for me.
I’m hoping you’ll see this comment. I have a section of dry wall that is only 4 inches wide that I need to repair. It is between my pantry door and my kitchen backsplash. How do I get a sponge in that a tiny crack? None of the Lexan tools are small enough.
Hey JBIRD, Thanks man!👍🏻 Yes, you could use a knockdown texture spray can. Problem is the texture they spray out is just too thin of the material and usually does not match the existing texture on the wall or ceiling. The cans also make a huge mess and are expensive. I hope that helps. What type of project are you working on now?Take care, -Paul
Hi! I just received the sponge and I'm ready to try the texturing on a scrap piece of drywall but had a question about the waiting time. You mentioned that the amount of time you need to wait before knocking down depends on the knockdown you are trying to match. How do I know how long to wait?
Hi Brandon, actually Orange peel texture is lighter than a knockdown texture which is on this repair. Here’s a link to a couple videos that show orange peel texture: ruclips.net/p/PL7Ww-LhWbB0FkgrGjKCjBu7kYChhM4Y91 I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching! Take care, -Paul
Hi P B, great question! No I didn’t prime or paint the area before applying the knockdown texture. I just wiped the area after sanding with a damp cloth. Here’s the part 1 video: ruclips.net/video/NDzYVU9aIOE/видео.html I hope this helps, -Paul
This looks like an excellent product/tool, one I need to buy and learn how to use it. Over the past 8 years, I've had a number of seems open in my living room ceiling - part of a new addition that was built on to my house back in 2010. Just recently, it happened again, and the contractor made a huge deal about having to repair it, even thought I paid him a lot of money. Obviously, it was not a job he wanted to do. Even after paying a considerable amount of money, the contractor did not do a very good job. Now, I'm out nearly $300, and am still not happy with the repair. Also, do not ever use the spray can texture, as it shows through, and does not blend well after numerous coats of paint.
Not a dumb question at all. Actually this is my demonstration drywall wall which is interior. But I’m doing the demonstration video outside so I can have better lighting. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching! Take care, -Paul
if your lazy and don't care about matching the texture, use this sponge. otherwise use a hand held spray gun for patches to actually match knockdown texture. if you have 200$ to spare, buy the Laco texture gun or the 15$ small plastic hand held sprayer works just great for DIY. they are on amazon
Awesome! Love this technique, looks better and way cheaper than the spray cans!
Hi Pete, Thanks man!👍🏻 Yes, this technique is way better than the knockdown texture spray cans by far. The knockdown sponge blends the texture perfectly. The spray cans? Not so much... Take care, -Paul
The spray can is junk I learned that the hard way
The spray cans are really expensive and they use a solvent that will smell up your house for a week. This is much better no VOC.

Right on Alan!👍 Thanks for watching and subscribing! -Paul
Watched your videos on knockdown sponge and acrylic lexan process. Helped me do it my first time. Awesome!
You call it a textured drywall patch, I call it art restoration. Great job by the renovation artist! Thanks Paul! :)
Thanks for your assistance on knock down repair it was very helpful
Glad you found my video helpful.👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and commenting!😎
Thanks for putting the link in the comments. I found it and enjoyed the video. I have drywalled quite a bit in my years as a remodeler, but never had to do any knock down work until I moved to AZ.
I’m a DIY guy. Wife loves it. Thank you.

70 yr old DIY woman, great video. I can do this!
haha 73 yr old woman, needing to do this too! we can do it 💪
I spread the joint compound on with a taping knife first to get it level and even than I use the sponge. Great video!
You're the man Paul!
Who the hell cut you off talking? That knucklechuck. 🤭
finally a video where the skilled drywall guy is NOT using texture in a can
So cool Paul! You are a Texture-Master Master!
I appreciate that John!👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching!🙏 Take care. -Paul
Thanks a bunch, Paul
I like to see it after primed see how well it match up with old texture
Wow! Great video! I hate knockdown, and can’t wait for it to go out of style.. but since my current house has knockdown, I’m going to try this technique for repairs on it! Best knockdown video on RUclips!
🧽 That's some awesome texturing Paul👍
Hey hey Suzy!🙌🏼 I really appreciate that! Thanks so much for watching and commenting my friend!😎 -Paul
Thank u! Never would've thought of this haha!
Thanks so much for this video! I had to patch a portion of my bathroom wall because the previous owners spackled a deep hole and it caved right in. I was able to match the knockdown using your directions. Super easy and once painted it looks great!
Nice. That does make it easy. It would have been nice to see how close you came once you painted it.
Josh, I’ve actually got a video coming out where I prime and paint this patch. I also show how to keep a repair from flashing. Stay tuned...👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
I wish I would have seen your video before I did the flick the compound off the brush technique which worked ok but yours method looks easier and more like the rest of the wall 👍
wow. it looks great & so simple with the right tools. i have a small patch up job & i am going to try your instructions. thanks.
Looks great thanks Paul
Thank you Barbara! Glad you enjoyed the video.👍🏻 Take care, -Paul
Nice job Paul!
Awesome! Right to the point! Appreciate you!
Love this! Would loved to see it completely dried and painted so that you can see how well the match was.
Looks spot on to me
Thanks Paul
Thanks so much! I can definitely do this
Yes!👍🏻😎
Perfect video. Thank you sir.
Personally have never tried it but i gotta say it looks good bro.👍
+Fernan C I appreciate that man!👍🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Nice job teaching knockdown texture on a patch.
Love it paul
Thank you so much for watching and commenting my friend!💥👍🏻😎

Question with you texture do you add water to thin it out or no?
Hey Paul, another great video thanks for sharing your skills it's helping me out so much. Can't wait to see another one

Good video
Nice Job!!!!
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing Elkin!👍 -Paul
What products did you use? you should consider leaving links in the description...
Do you wet the sponge first?
Looks awesome King of Drywall
Thank you so much Kevin!👍🏻 Take care. -Paul

New sub here! 👍 Looks great! Now if I can find the sponge. 😀 Thanks again for the great video!
Thank you
Thanks for the video it helps a lot. I am going to do my patch job right now. : o ) Thx !
hi paul do you tape the hole first??? i have to move some pot lights
Thanks for the video!
Thanks.
Thank you!
Great Job Paul, as always..👍
Tfs..
Hey there Queen!✌🏻Thank you so much!👍🏻 How’s your projects going? -Paul
Paul Peck ....hey there👋👋...ummmm, lets just say they are still "works in progress"...😅
Enjoy your day!🤙
Can I use 20 minute drywall mud for this?
Great video huge problem bulding a home having it built and it was painted this week the knock down is alot higher than it was supposed to be and clumps that did not get knock down here and there anything i can do just sand down the big glob or ? Its everywhere. And in the corners its cracking and can see the drywall tape behind the knock down
Wish people would do super closeups to verify if it’s the same texture as my walls.
Do you have a video on how to fix a repair with to much texture.
I do apartment maintenance we use can spray knock down which is expensive..great way to DIY w practice..how long can u have that bucket of AP joint before it dries up?

Is this better then using homax spray? I notice the spray with a knockdown leaves like a porous texture behind.
Great tutorial, thanks! Do you thin the joint compound down with water first, or just use it as it comes out of the container?
Straight from the container for a week defined look. Has a good consistency to hold form when floated. If you thin the mud, the texture will be much more fine but in my experience will need to set longer before being floated.
Gracias por compartir sus conocimientos y experiencia, me ayudo mucho a reparar mi pared de una manera fácil y económica 👍
Great Video!! Thanks!
I appreciate that Victoria!💥👊🏻 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!🙏 -Paul
Do you prime the patch mud before applying the texture? Or can the texture go right over the patch?
The texture went right over the patch.👍🏻
Great share!
I appreciate it Bert! Thanks for watching my friend!👍 -Paul
Wow thx wish this was the first vid I watched.
Do you or someone repair small bubbles sprayed on by textured spray in San Diego ? , Ca.
Hello Paul. Did you thin down the mud in this repair to a pancake batter consistency before you started? If doing a larger area is it best using the 3/4" Knapp roller method?

Where is the link for your tools I didn't see it
You had the sponge with the cutout side and the flat side. It looked like you use the flat side. Did I see that right?
Ty man!
thanks look great
Hi! Did you use the sponge dry or damp?
I used it dry Laura.👍🏻 But, damp works too. Thanks for watching! 😎 -Paul
Unfortunately for me, it's hard to tell without painting it and looking at it altogether. I tried the sponge method and it didn't work out that great for me.

Does the knockdown texture that you’re trying to match look flat or bubbly?
@@PaulPeck I think bubbly... I can't send pics via youtube but I did contact you via facebook messenger and attached a pic. Thanks!
It works a lot better if you thin your mud
Texture sponges for small repairs can be bought at Michael's for cheap
Can this also be called orange peel texture, or is that different?
Hi Brandon, actually Orange peel texture is lighter than a knockdown texture which is on this repair. Here’s a link to a couple videos that show orange peel texture: ruclips.net/p/PL7Ww-LhWbB0FkgrGjKCjBu7kYChhM4Y91 I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching! Take care, -Paul

Wher i buy this sponsh
How do you do this on a curved corner
I thought you had to mix water with the mud?
Hard to tell how good it will actually be if you leave the video without finishing painting it.
Donde puedo comprar esa esponja alguien me puede decir por favor gracias.,y como se llama
Ok bro
👍🏻
Your not going to tell if it matches until you paint it.
I think a spray texture would have been better
That does not match. Texture was too thick
