This is soooo good! While the focus was on menswear, I couldn’t help but gasp at Grace in that white dress to jumper poolside look 🤩. Love that the focus was on all the details of menswear in this. Rarely do you see a vid breaking these looks down and you did SUPERB! Adore you and these videos so much!

The Vintage Voyageur thanks so much!! I’m glad you got my Lund Shun 😂! Yes It was difficult to “ignore” the amazing womenswear in this film. Grace Kelly and Celeste Holm are at the top of their style game here.

The looks in this film are so sharp! I never noticed the back brim of Louis Armstrong’s Pork Pie, before!! Leave it to Louis to be that snazzy. I truly enjoyed your breakdown of men’s fashion and very much look forward to more. Would you consider doing Singing in the Rain?

I enjoyed this so much, it doesn't seem like there's a lot of content on menswear back then. I think the only bit I would have liked added onto your video was seeing a visual of your alternative suggestions for collar for the suits. I could get a sense of what you meant but am not well versed enough to know exactly what look you were talking about. Thanks for making!
P.S. What about My Fair Lady?

Such a great video! I've never seen the film, but I can't help but feel like the morning dress for Uncle Willie was to showcase his sense of style, as well as his sense of formality of the occasion and a touch of oldfashioned values. Or trying to appear as a man of very high social status against others in less formal clothing. I look forward to more Menswear at the Movies!

    This is so good!
If you're taking suggestions, mine would be Our Man In Havana.
Also could be neat and pretty popular to do any of the many versions of The Great Gatsby, maybe analysing what they did right or did well visually (like good colour combinations), but not neccesarily what they got very historically inaccurate (which, ya know, is most of it).
Also maybe a few silent film comedy star shorts, like Charles Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton, and Max Linder, as some of those men both on and off screen were definitely wearing some of the most fashionable styles of the time (Harold Lloyd's jazz suits, for example). Vaudeville chic, because ✨AESTHETICS✨™️ 😅

This was so good! I’m so glad I found you on Instagram. (I think via Pinsent tailoring.) I was born in 1952 and my early sense of fashion was derived from watching older movies. I remember those broad shouldered suits from the ‘50’s and I think men would really feel good about themselves and swagger. My father had one of those hats like Sinatra’s, the dark with the wide white band. Oh, yeah. They were quite the thing. He wore it when going to work downtown with it tilted ever so slightly to the side.

I really enjoy the concept of this series, both for learning more about vintage menswear and the old movies. One wish though; as someone who doesn't know a lot about suits and who's following in my second language, I am quite reliant on visuals to understand what you are talking about. So more close-ups of the part of the costume you are discussing would be helpful, the same would examples when you are discussing what options they should have gone with. I would also like to know more of the why, like why one sort of collar would be more appropriate than another, or why white buttons on black tuxedos shouldn't be done. But these are just minor changes, as a whole I think this was great.

I've got a picture of my great-great-grandfather that I know next to nothing about, and I now only realized after watching your video... he's dressed like a Dandy! He's got some kind of hat on, but he's wearing it tilted back on his head like the bandmembers are when they're all in the vehicle, and he's got a bowtie on and it looks like he's wearing a tuxedo jacket. Now I'm wondering what he did for a living and what his life looked like and how he and my great-great-grandmother crossed paths! They were never married, and the story goes he was from New York state. Maybe he was a musician of some type?
Thank you for your video! I'm having a moment being able to look at the picture of my ancestor with a new eye and noticing things about his clothing and having a moment of connection with him.

That's interesting about the shirt collars with tuxedos, as a UK/US difference :-) (UK should correctly wear a wing collar with white tie, and a fold-down collar with black tie...)

Although it is in black and white, I think a good candidate for Menswear at the Movies, would be Sunset Boulevard with William Holden. He starts out just a poor script writer and then becomes Gloria Swanson's toy boy. She buys him some great clothes. I always love the scene where he's about to buy a camel hair coats and the shop assistant says "as the lady is buying, get the vicunna."

Fantastic breakdown! I've always loved how Dex's outfits seem to barely meet the societal requirements, emphasizing his inappropriateness as Tracy's 'equal' . Especially enjoyed the tidbits about the band and Louis Armstrong. looking forward to more movies getting the treatment! How about 'Robin and the 7 Hoods', and 'Rebecca'?

Someone mentioned "Singing in the rain", so that's my Gene Kelly fix ! How about a bit of Danny Kaye ?! I always loved him, he was incredible, but seemed to be "second banana" as there were so many multi-talented handsome men at that time ! (You could do an entire video on vaudeville, as that and the upstate N.Y. {Catskills} were such training grounds for dancers, singers, etc....)
