I really hated how everything Mark said and wanted basically boiled down to making the game excessively more "epic" or "awesome", failing to realise that the simplicity was what kept people engaged. Not just the combat too, the fact that you could just meet the Gods of the game face to face just completely shattered all mystery for me.
@@hyvenia6157 He wanted RuneScape to be more like World of Warcraft. Failing to realise that the reason why RuneScape was successful around that period was due to the simplicity of it all. Take a look at RS3 now. People were happy that last month had an average of 20k+ players online for the first time since Necromancy released. It's a sad state of a game, spearheaded by people who have long forgotten the reason why RuneScape was so popular. Now look at OSRS. 130k+ online right now. Yeah, people can say there are a lot of bots. But just look at how well it performs online on RUclips and Twitch. It's a massively popular game, because it's simple. Sweaty methods are there, but it's less than 1% of the playerbase actually participating in said methods. Nobody, and I really mean nobody (well, aside from Mod Mark and his goons) wanted RuneScape to become World of Warcraft lite. We're 10+ years on from OSRS releasing, and just look at how well that turned out for the game. OSRS is getting REAL content updates on the regular. Whereas RS3 contents are whatever the latest TH event is and a new boss every 5 months. Love to see somebody as clueless as Mod Mark be proven massively wrong.
OSRS is actually older than RS2 was. It's proof that RS3 never needed to happen. I cried at some of the clips on the outro. OSRS is more nostalgic than RS2 at this point. The community is amazing, lead by the dedicated OSRS Jagex team that put their heart into this game.
Wow, the time between RS2 and RS3 release dates is a little over 9 years while the time between OSRS release date and today is well over 11 years. That's mindblowing.
Rs3 Needed to happen. Theres a good population of the player base that would've never played Runescape without the EOC update. This is just opening the player base up to Runescape in general. Some from Rs3 will try, maybe convert, maybe not, or maybe both. I think I would be a statistical proof that Rs3 did need to happened because without it I Wouldn't have jumped in and fell in love with Runescape as a whole. I'm sure I am not the only one here.
Tell me you’re a 20something that got into OSRS because of B0aty without telling me 😂 You have NO idea what you’re talking about. RS2 will always be the goat over OSRS

this absolutely saved Runescape.... as a whole.... I started playing on Miniclip WAY BACK WHEN and always find myself coming back to just check on my characters, and kinda go on a nostalgia trip about one of my favorite MMOs of all time
It might seem nuts now, and it doesn’t get a mention here, but at the time the addition of the G.E was actually really controversial. It killed off most in world trading, absolutely nuked the industries that were operating on the Forums for Trade. There was literally a trading floor going off in the forums, you’d have to bump your thread every 5/10 mins that’s how busy it was. Buying BS at 100gp ea spinning like 10k of em, PAYING PEOPLE to do so in gp and then selling them for 150-170 ea depending on when the US servers woke up. Sometimes you’d have someone desparate for a sale who would offer 180gp each and you bit that guys arm off, you dropped what you were doing and sold all you had regardless of where you are in your processing.
Really miss some of the content that didn't make it because of the 2007 cut. Things like Stealing Creations was one of the best minigames they ever made, Fist of Guthix that came to shape an entire new F2P meta both for gear and skilling, and the few balanced aspects of Summoning was a nice spin on the common MMO follower system. I remember when I first tried OSRS in 2017 going to where Fist of Guthix was in the wilderness to go train up magic, only to find that it and some of the better content from 2008-2011 didn't make it into the game.
I personally liked the polypore concept of a built in spell item and I’m glad they came out with the trident as something similar in osrs. I also wish they had flasks in osrs
I miss playing FOG so much! I'd run around as a 50 attack pure with 99 range and magic and just punish main accounts with switches. 😂 Ah, the good old days. When I had no money and my parents beat me. At least I had Runescape.
As much as I loved them back in the day, FOG and SC were only fun because we were clueless noobs. If they released today they'd be minmaxed to hell and be dead within a week just like every other PVP minigame
They spent like 3 years straight just killing the game, first they made the armors looks terrible, rune bandos barrows armors now looks terrible. They changed the weapons made the whip look like trash. They got rid of trading and wilderness, then they make all the og armors and weapons useless by releasing chaotics and other op armor and weapons that literally made the old endgame items garbage. Archers rings were like 25k when I looked at my bank last.
Was until 2018 for me lol. I quit after trying the beta and figuring out they aren't going back on this. So I had no clue they ever made osrs until I saw a random ad for it.
I was one of those, I logged in, moved the camera around, saw the icons, logged out and never came back. They really did drop the ball there. Never trust a jagex employee named mark again. lol
Probably the first time youtube rec'd a lower sub/view channel video without it being complete garbage devoid of any production value. Amazing video, will be checking in for more
Iunno, youtube recommends random low-view count videos (im talking single digits sometimes here) all the time. I think you just need to actually click on those videos more often for it to realize you're open to watching unpopular stuff that's not taken off or anything yet.
No offense, boyo, but it sounds like you need to watch some better vids. The rec feature sure ain't perfect, but it jives off what you've been watching. Or at least tries to.
Very happy to see you point how Jagex changed their own rules during Squeal of Fortune. Its a small detail that is often overlooked when people talk about this, but its so important to showing how Jagex worked at that time. For me, this was the big update that made me feel Runescape was dead. Adding in microtransactions and changing their rules quietly, made it feel like could change whatever they wanted and they weren't going to be open about it to the players. It created this feeling of separation that Jagex typically didn't have. At least not for monetary things which could affect the game so drastically.
Randomly had this video pop up in my homepage and its so well done and well documented, and I got a very cheeky cameo! I quit in 2012 because of the microtransactions and the combat update, and while I'm not much on RUclips these days, I'm still an avid OSRS player and almost maxed (which I never did in RS3). Great vid!
As someone who played runescape since shortly after RS2 was released it really brings a tear to my eye to be reminded of everything we have gone through and how far we have come today... It really shows that in the right hands the passion we have gor the things we have can live on forever.
Shoutout Oxie from the XP Waste Pod for this. No idea a video like this existed. Very very great video and the memories of watching what happened back then honestly is sad. But the OSRS community has uplifted all the bad memories of everyone’s childhood games being destroyed by still being a great game since the release in 2013. Happy Scaping!
It's clear how much love, effort and attention has gone into this video and the result is wonderful. I had to go back and watch that intro again just to appreciate all the themes you managed to convey visually. You did such a good job in building up the feelings of hope towards the end of the video as well, and then eventually celebration as OSRS returned. I almost felt as though I had gone back in time and was experiencing it all again. Beautiful.
Amazing video! The compilation of old YT videos about the polls was my favorite part but the intro and outro also gave me chills. Crazy how much work you put into making this! Gz on 100k views, well deserved.
Criminally underrated channel. You really went above and beyond finding all those old videos and other RS youtubers I follow don't have nearly half as much of that. You deserve far more attention and subscribers just for this video alone. Keep up the great work!!
I've played RuneScape for 19 years. I'm still on RS3, but I voted for 07, I constantly watch 07 content and just started a GIM on 07. I'll never stop singing the praises of OSRS, it is a game ran the correct way. I wish us in RS3 got the same treatment.
A member of my clan linked this video - I wanted to comment to let you know I enjoyed the entire video and you did an excellent job! I look forward to seeing more
This video was amazing. I started playing during the RSC era and am still playing to this day on OSRS. I was one of the thousands of players who quit because of EOC, didn't even know OSRS was brought back until 2017 when a childhood friend of mine told me about it, and have been playing it again every since. It's crazy to see the game go from an internet browser, to playing it on my phone during down time at work. We all owe it to Mod Ash and the 2 other mods who were brave enough to speak their opinions and get the ball rolling for the roll back.
Ain’t nothin better than chilling & playing osrs. Kinda transcends nostalgia for me at this point, just sends the greatest dopamine to the brain. shoutout W420 🐐
I'm one of the many who quit when EOC came out. Runescape is special and unique the way it is. Changing it to mold it into just another ordinary MMO ruins it. So glad Old School became a thing and is thriving to this day. I truly believe if it wasn't for Old School, Runescape would just be a nostalgic memory of a forgotten game right now.
Completely new to this channel and absolutely blown away by the quality of this doc!! I haven't touched the game in years, but this was such a trip down memory lane. I remember talking about the changes to the game with my friends at school and protesting in the GE, it was really something i cared deeply about at the time. Runescape truly has a special team of players and developers behind it and that is showcased really well by the care put into this video. cheers
I paid some $$ to the 2006scape owner to get in to the beta testing, 11/10 experience, shit was so good. Don't really feel like I got scammed because he put so much time and effort in to creating it, he deserved some money for his effort before Jigflex axed his project.
I fell into a really awkward position when the EOC scism came about. My "golden age" of playing Runescape was 2010, before EOC, but after a lot of other players' nostalgic vision of the game. I remember grinding Fist of Guthix for the spiky berserker shields. I remember really liking the new HD models and animations, while others didn't. I remember loving the new Dungeoneering skill, while a lot of others disliked it. When EOC did come out, I wasn't too happy with it. I felt it was too much of a change. But when 2007scape came back, I didn't like that either because it was before my time. I was stuck between two games I loved and forced to pick a side. I still play RS3 now. I love the world and story, I love the combat system, I love the new content and skills. But I absolutely hate the prevelance of microtransactions souring it all.
been playing since 05. 2010 was also my favourite era of rs. absolutely hated eoc and quit until the return of osrs. dont feel bad for choosing rs3. ignore the weirdos who love stirring the pot between both communities. what matters most is that you have fun 😁
When I first saw Squeal of Fortune and EoC I was sad because my favorite childhood game was becoming like other microtransaction MMO slop. OSRS was a gift to the whole community by people who really knew and cared about what the players wanted.
I've played since classic, sort of faded away after 07 because graduation and working, starting my career.. I didn't know it came to a vote to have OSRS back, I would have came back just to vote YES. It brought tears to my eyes to know how many people came together to get this game that I love and have played for years back..
I played RuneScape back in 2006/2007. I do remember suddenly stopping playing and NEVER coming back to the game. I was absolutely obsessed with this game and all of a sudden it just wasn't the same. I miss RuneScape (what RuneScape used to be)to be honest. Those were the days
Mod Mark single hand DESTROYED runescape and he is still working for them today. Please I beg you f****** fire the guy. CMMON. Jagex was just bought! and they are now hopefully taking down all microtransactions in RS3, this is AMAZING. Runescape is releasing content and is back alive. We have to fire all people related to RS2.
As someone who loves both RS3 and OSRS for different reasons, I can't help but miss what could have been, if EoC and it's fellow controversial updates at that time had been implemented in a way that didn't shatter the playerbase. That aside, loved the video! Greetings from the Fishing Trawler #BottomBoyz :3
Love the video! Really good idea since it seems like the story of Runescape has a perfect three-act structure ending in redemption - hope you carry on with these kinds of videos! 😃
This was so well produced. Very moving. I played through EOC and play Old School now because I could never get my hands on membership back in the day. Great video!!
In all fairness, I don't understand the hate of RS3, and I play both OSRS and RS3, as well has having played Runescape since 2000 when it was a Java client with 2D cutouts walking around. The only beef I have with RS3 is the MTX, though playing Ironman I don't notice any difference between OSRS and RS3 in terms of the core mechanics that I like about Runescape, being the grinding out of skills. Main reason for Ironman is that shait called the Grand Exchange, honestly, a lot of videos I see of OSRS is mainly someone buying the top gear and everything they need and stand in the G.E doing their skill levelling. This is why Ironman is preferable in both RS3 and OSRS. Sure you can blame EOC being "dull" but honestly, most of the times in OSRS the combat consist of standing in 1 spot with your prayer, it's not exactly the most engaging system out there. All in all, both versions work for me at least. I play what ever I feel like playing there and then and don't see one being neither superior nor inferior to the other
It's a mix of bitterness and parroting, specially since a lot of people tried the 1.0 version of EoC that was REALLY shit, but never tried the modern one. You can see with a lot of OSRS content creators that try Rs3, almost all of them enjoy the game, but later quit because of the one true problem with Rs3, lack of a decent flow of good new content
I had honestly forgotten how bad it got leading up to EOC. It was genuinely mental. This video is so well done though the end with settled on swampletics gave me chills. Really makes you appreciate what we've got now with OSRS !
makes me so so fucking proud that the player base banded together and got what we wanted, we pay we say Mod ash is by far the most dedicated, devoted and loved dev of any game ever made, with out him this our game never get to where it is! Thank you mod Ash
cause jagex literally ripped our childhoods out from under our feet and sent our accounts to a game we'd never play. on purpose. and they laughed about it
Holy cow that intro was phenomenally good, omg! Phenomenal editing, and the "unregistered hypercam" in the corner is a nice touch lmao I couldn't sub fast enough.
EOC combat hasn't changed in any remarkable way since its original rollout, meaning it has been around longer than classic and runescape 2 combined (other than OSRS). It's still using the same old generic and uninspiring combat abilities with a few additions tacked on at higher levels. It has got to be the most boring system of its kind in the entire industry and they've done nothing to fix it. THAT is why rs3 is failing. Plenty of other MMOs with similar combat systems have far worse MTX than RS3 but they at least make their combat system fun and engaging, but not jagex, that would require actually investing into their own products which they hate doing.
"EOC combat hasn't changed" thats straight up untrue, the 1.0 version was completely garbage and clunky (thats why it flopped) it received a lot of changes to make it smoother, theres not even the Revolution system on launch, it is not EoC that makes modern Rs3 suck, if anything modern EoC is the one only thing it has over OSRS, what makes RS3 suck is the fact that the new content either sucks or is too slow to release, content is always king, and for every 1 good new content Rs3 gets, osrs gets 5, this is why RS3 is dying, MTX poisoned the well for content because it's more money efficient to make content for the cash shop than to make good new content for gameplay
@@nexpersonal5066 you deliberately left out a major part of that statement "... In any REMARKABLE way" Yeah they have tuned the combat and added revolution for AFK, but EOC combat is almost identical to its original rollout. The combat fucking sucks and always has. It didn't flunk because it was clunky, otherwise almost everyone would have come back. People didn't come back because the system fundamentally sucked ass.
@@schmiddy8433 Revolution+ and the accuracy hit changes from post Necro changed massively how the combat flows, it REMARKABLY changed how you play, with how switches and specs work, specially since the way the combat system works interacts greatly with weapons, new weapons and ability codexes change a lot how it plays. No one comes back to RS3 because why would they ? Why would yo leave OSRS that has always great content to go to a game where the new Tier 95 Armor from the hardest dungeon to date is a reskin from the MTX shop, CONTENT IS KING, and RS3 has SHIT content schedule
@@nexpersonal5066 Ask literally anyone else in the OSRS community if they like the combat in RS3 And to give you a point of comparison, by the time the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for WoW was released (4 years after the original game launch) WoW had hundreds of different 'spells' and abilities. Each one had unique effects that synergized with any number of other abilities to create different rotations and many people spent a lot of their time just theory crafting the best rotations. What do you have in RS3 after a decade of EOC? One dimensional abilities that do one thing, maybe are designed to work with one other ability, and that's about it. Everyone is still using the same boring and uninspired abilities from 10 years ago.
@@schmiddy8433 RS3 Rotations literally changed a lot, necromancy it's is own whole new thing, EOF was huge, literally every old spec became valid again. ALSO OFC the average OSRS player will say they hate the RS3 combat, because they either don't like the style overall, haven't played it and are just parroting, or well, are one of the multiple streamers you see that actually played the game and liked it but didn't stay/play casually cuz the content sucks. Theres so much to hate and complain from RS3, but complaining about modern day EOC is peak "quit during EOC release, never played again, thinks that they know what they are talking about" muting notifs

as someone that was in the EoC beta, it wasnt actually being used to test by most players. it was mosting rwt'ers and bot testing and the few like me that actually tested and found tons of bugs and more importantly told jagex repeatedly that it wasnt ready were ignored.

I just don't understand how they went through with the update given how much opposition there was.
@@user-ck9tb4fv2xI started with RS3. I tried out OSRS but didn’t really like it.
Tell me you’re a 20something that got into OSRS because of B0aty without telling me 😂

@@kingocowata ya know i used to think the same about RS2. But honestly.. I think oldschool at this point is way better. I do everything I used too + 10x more lol.
First day of 07scape being online was maybe the best gaming moment ever
I remember standing in Lumbridge with a group of people protesting in the final moments because the game got turned off to switch to EOC. Very sad day
I quit when 3 came out. Didn’t start again til I heard OSRS came out and that was years after it was released
Can tell a lot of work went into this. The editing was superb. I mean even the intro felt like a legit movie intro. Very well done!
Bro that intro segment animation was absolutely freaking beautiful. I really hope you blow up because seriously your quality is top notch.
this absolutely saved Runescape.... as a whole....
I hope they add them eventually, loved it so much. Dungeoneering too, they’ve tried to introduce similar mechanics but it’s all end-game..
Ah, the good old days. When I had no money and my parents beat me. At least I had Runescape.
As much as I loved them back in the day, FOG and SC were only fun because we were clueless noobs. If they released today they'd be minmaxed to hell and be dead within a week just like every other PVP minigame

big shoutout, amazing video
beginning of osrs was so magical, glad i was a part of that
I still remember after eoc when they made every weapon basicaly 4 tic without adjusting any stats. Very smart team who thought that was a great idea.
lol eoc was so broken, felt like the npc weren’t balanced properly for it. I just remember wrecking stuff
Also changed the look of how you do combat, changed the hit splats to where you now hit 100 instead of 10.
Overloads and soul split/turmoilalso ruined pvp and made pvm way too easy.
@@hulkhogan2113 i feel like some of the mods back then just had no respect for the existing content and threw it in the trash.
So many of us logged into Falador on that fateful day and never logged back in....until ONE DAY in 2013 :)

I was one of those, I logged in, moved the camera around, saw the icons, logged out and never came back. They really did drop the ball there. Never trust a jagex employee named mark again. lol

No Content = Trash opinion on video making. Make some videos bro then get back with this one when your quality meets or exceeds this one.
@@user-ck9tb4fv2x What are you yapping on about, I'm saying the video is good
The first time. Okay. Have you been on yt for 5 days?
Iunno, youtube recommends random low-view count videos (im talking single digits sometimes here) all the time.
I think you just need to actually click on those videos more often for it to realize you're open to watching unpopular stuff that's not taken off or anything yet.
No offense, boyo, but it sounds like you need to watch some better vids. The rec feature sure ain't perfect, but it jives off what you've been watching. Or at least tries to.
That intro went hard.
Edit. The production value throughout goes hard
Great vid!
Love the intro, especially the music. Sounds like James bond, The Incredibles and Tintin all at once. Fills you with a sense of wonder and mystery.
As someone who played runescape since shortly after RS2 was released it really brings a tear to my eye to be reminded of everything we have gone through and how far we have come today...
It really shows that in the right hands the passion we have gor the things we have can live on forever.
That intro reminds me of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Dude what an amazing opening animation

Beautiful.

Nostalgia is a small part of osrs anymore. It's literally one of the greatest games ever made.
Wow the introduction editing is really impressive! Great work and attention to detail :)
Thank you!!!

The quality of this production and storytelling is phenomenal - I tip my hat to you sire!

As someone who only recently got into osrs, thanks for summarizing these events, runescape is an amazing game with an amazing history.
So glad to see that you've recently joined the community! I am also happy you found this video to be of some help in learning about its history
It's mad how they didn't release EOC like they did with OSRS and have a few servers so people could try it and give feedback
This video deserves even more views. That intro sequence alone looks like it took ages to make! Props to you man!

That opening sequence was a work of art
@@nexpersonal5066 you deliberately left out a major part of that statement
"... In any REMARKABLE way"
Yeah they have tuned the combat and added revolution for AFK, but EOC combat is almost identical to its original rollout.
@@nexpersonal5066 Ask literally anyone else in the OSRS community if they like the combat in RS3
And to give you a point of comparison, by the time the Wrath of the Lich King expansion for WoW was released (4 years after the original game launch) WoW had hundreds of different 'spells' and abilities.
Theres so much to hate and complain from RS3, but complaining about modern day EOC is peak "quit during EOC release, never played again, thinks that they know what they are talking about"
