Black, Red, and Blue Capes had different stats until the ability to dye capes made them all equal - blue was best followed by red then black. In RS2 it was possible to change Family Crest Gauntlets but not until August 2005 (not March 2004). Dragon plateskirts were released a couple months after the legs in March 2005. Metal boots didn't have a strength bonus until 2006 or so. The Abyssal Whip was released on February 15th (misspoke), not January 15th. The first Whip was supposedly received at the end of February 2005. I also discovered that the Green Day album came out a year earlier than I said in September of 2004 so it's me. A small story of how I got my first whip. I was a pretty big noob and could never afford one. My brother was a much bigger player and he had a friend who lived in Europe, we were in the US. His European friend had the slayer level to kill Abyssal Demoms and while he slept, my brother would use his account to grind demons for whips to sell and split the profits. One day while my brother was at a party and I was at home, I snuck into my brothers room, found the paper with the login info and got on. I grinded out demons til a whip dropped, took about 3 hours. I traded it to my account and replaced all the food and supplies I had used on the account and put it back where he was originally logged out at. They never knew and that’s how a total noob was able to get a whip.
I joined a clan and won a whip about a week later from some celebration event. Needless to say, all the OG clan members were PISSED that some FNG took the top prize of the day 😂😂 I will never forget that day 😊

I watched this video and was amazed by the amount of research and dedication you created for this. I started RS just as the construction skill went live, so this was a great trip down memory lane. I went to your channel, and you only have 500 subscribers?! This is top tier content, and I can't wait for the many more videos to come.
Wow, this was an incredible deep dive into Runescape's development history. Honestly even with all the research I did for Time Traveller Ironman I still learned so much. Nice work!
This brought back so many good memories, thank you for making it! Also, the level of research and time it would have taken to make this video shouldn't go unnoticed. Well done!
It's worth noting that when whips came out, they cost ~60m gp, and they attacked as fast as throwing knives which made them massively op... Jagex had to nerf to what it is today.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The next video was delayed unexpectedly but it will be a nice tribute mostly to some niche memories from RS2 as well as a couple from Classic. Stay tuned!
In my heart, I want to believe you had already written your Green Day joke and we just happened to upload our cover *the day* before this well researched and well written video was uploaded.
I played RS around 2005-2010 then stopped. But started watching content about it just recently starting 2020, and lemme tell you this video in particular is hitting me with tons of nostalgia lol. I specifically remember working my 15 yr old ass off to get the "meta" items of the era back in 2010.
Thank you! We weren't originally planning on making more video essays but we've been blown away by the response to this one so we'll have to add more to the docket now. I've got a fresh idea for the next one that I will start writing soon. In the meantime, please stay tuned for the main series of the channel hopefully premiering later this week or early next week if everything goes according to plan.
this is the runescape we all would want to play again, if the devs ever bring it back, its the graphics that captivated all of us to play this game. The amount of players playing was insane. The diffciculty of making money back was really hard,, like i remember when cowhides were the best money maker back then. Also the highwayman was definitely the npc i always had to avoid XD. As a f2p player back then, dragon slayer was the hardest quest I ever tried and was also very scary to do.
I remember training on hill giants with my buddy man. For a few hours just two kids talking shit and clicking on game. Those were the days...training with someone and setting training times for logins. It was sad when I realized I would never talk to some of those people again...
Me thinking how have i not seen this channel before these are some good quality vids, then seeing the subscriber count. I see a golden gnome in your future!
There's a small chance you saw some old videos on this channel 15 years ago on my first try at video making, but my best video back then only had about 86k views. In any case, I'm no stranger to this game even after a long break. Either way, thank you for the kind words!
23 years ago. Dang! I remember like yesterday when my older cousin showed me the game. All the times my mom and I yelled at eachother because she had to unplug the dial-up internet to make phone calls. Runescape played such a big role in my childhood. I used to rock bunny ears as they were untradeable and proved you were an OG (2002).
I remember being a total knob back in the day and I'd do sessions with a friend of mine almost like in a sweatshop just playing for hours and hours doing barrows in the most non-minmax way cuz we barely knew wtf we were doing and then 2 items dropped including the guthans spear which was worth a crapload of money back then and the dharok chestpiece. We were screaming like crazy haha
I remember the day the Dark Bow was released and some PKer found a way to one shot pretty much any setup lol. Classic grainy pk vids on youtube with Lincoln Park in the background.
My journey didn't start until 2008 so i imagine those who were around in the early days think "damn things were different back in the day". This kind of stuff is cool to watch
I used to be pretty bad at bossing, but I found Vorkath in 2018 to be the confidence boost that I needed to tackle other bosses as well. You should check out the new rat boss Scurrius if you want to get better at PvM mechanics. It does a really good job of teaching you the basics and giving you the confidence you need to utilize the skills you already have. Good luck against Jad and the Culinaromancer! You've got this!
I have 94 strength and have never even ATTEMPTED to get a fire cape yet. Or fight any boss for that matter, outside of simple quest bosses. I've been playing RuneScape since 2005, and I've only died once. Because I'm way too scared. I don't really take risks. Though I have completed 102 quests and have 203 quest points. I just don't try anything with advanced combat mechanics, like prayer flicking, or anything where you really have to learn patterns and timing, etc. My health pretty much *never* goes below half, because I'd panic too much if it did. If I ever got hit for 20+ damage, I'd probably react by screaming and closing my laptop 😂
@@ShizuruNakatsuI too still play like a HCIM 20 years after losing all my items by dying to a Dwarf in the Mines in Classic 😂. You know, you can practice the Jad fight risk free on an alternate profile if you head to a quest speed running world and select Beneath Cursed Sands. You will start with a fire cape so you can use that to get into the inner circle of the TzHaar city and practice the 1 Jad challenge as many times as you like risk free. You've got this!
I vaguely recall people getting abby whips on day 2 or so. There was a bug where you could use ring of recoil or whatever, and someone eventually got it. Not sure if Jagex took it away though, but most likely banned the few who got it. I think granite mauls were within first few weeks for sure though. Everyone went crazy over them for several weeks until abby whip became more available, then the price plummeted. I believe it was like 1-2m, then crashed to like 100-200k in a few days. Whips starting at 40m, and in a few months heading into 3-5m.
I'm hoping to make that video one day as well. Old School gets a lot more complex with a lot of gear that has special niches rather than BIS everywhere so it will take a bit more research than RSC or RS2 even though I already have the release dates of all the gear in my files.
I remember in RS2 seeing two players in Edgeville trash talk each other to the point that they flew into a rage and did a risk fight for their dragon long swords.
That was a really well made and interesting video!! 😃👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve been playing since roughly ‘05/‘06 and I learned a lot there, particularly about classic, which I never actually got to play. Nice job! Subscribed! - Machinist_2
Cripes, I remember living through some of these. Abyssal Whips were the shit for awhile, especially with their special that guaranteed a max hit. You saw someone in Castle Wars with one, you died.
in the early days, after some months anyway.. everyone was aiming for typically using addy legs, plate, kite and Baxe " which i miss the aesthetics of" and then the rune med helm.
This video really shows how backwards smithing is in 2024. Why the fuck is the progression of that skill based on equipment progression that is out of date by 20 fucking years? RuneScape needs to figure something out, the longer this goes on the more comical it becomes.
its simple allow a new quest where you can mine dragon ore and make dragon items, except dragon plate body. you would need 99 smithing you can make all items.
Well unfortunately osrs is no longer "old-school" since ge, so much new and op shit, with pvm dominating the game, leading to pvm loots flooding the market making old-school items and skills useless.
@@wazup3333 basically pvm items domonate the market, you can now just pvm sell the loot and have nough gp to max. I literally went to nex when it came out and sold torva legs for 490 mill enough gp to get easily 10 skills to lvl 99 easily. So now you have players maxing like never before. Back then in rs classics there was no mega bosses to drop millions of gp in loot, at best you had d meds which where 5-7 mil at the start and 3 mil just before rs2 came out. And to max out a skill on rs2 costed like 25 mill.
@@wazup3333hate how pvm inflates bond. i play rs3 but bond is only 150mil because of pvm, you can make 2.5mil at most as f2p an hour. 60-120 hours, because of pvm inflatiom
I think the first time i ever saw runescape, i was about 8 years old. Making the year 2004ish. I could not believe my best friend was playing such a real looking game. Took about a year after that before i was able to play at my own house on a the new computer my family got. The first skill i ever got to 99 was woodcutting, and id like to say it took about a year to do it. Couldnt grind/didnt have the patience i do now as an adult. Also, there was no profit doing it, either i didnt know how cause obviously noob, the GE didnt exist and or i was just lazy. Now 20 years later i started playing again this year and its still just as good if not better than i remember, now that im older can understand what's going on alot better. RuneScape really was my first video game love ❤️
The rune chain was also crucial for getting that bonus power from Steel or Klank's Gauntlets that couldn't be paired up with the plate body or plate mail top.
The word 'rune' in Runescape is referencing the magically rocks used for magic spells, aka runes... Not rune armour.. That is why the word Runescape is spelt out on rocks... they're runes.
@@HamOSRS That's awesome ^_^ personally my favorite part about this one was seeing an overview of the game's development over the years, because it helped me understand how the development of skills like smithing and slayer corresponded with where people's characters were at the time. As someone who played a stint in 2006-8 but never had membership, it's been fascinating seeing the progression of skills, items, and regions over the years since now that I'm playing more "seriously" all these years later. Really makes everything feel more cohesive and logical. Anyway, rant over! Excited to see the next video, regardless of whether it does more of what I described :)
Some people got whips before getting 85 slayer. There was a developer oversight for a while where rings of recoil worked on slayer monsters. So with some rings of recoil and an inhuman amount of patience, it was possible to kill abyssal demons without the slayer level requirement.
I was playing during the slayer update. It definitely took a month or two for abyssal whips to start surfacing in low numbers on the market. Perhaps longer because there definitely was a brief era where granite malls were important.
Another commenter was saying the first whip entered the game near the end of February 2005, just 2 weeks after the whip was released, but I haven't confirmed that myself. Slayer had already been out for about 7 weeks by that point so it seems reasonable for a player who was already high combat level and focused on nothing but slayer since release. If that's true than the d scim was never BIS because whips had already entered the game by then.
@HamOSRS This timeline sounds accurate to me. I don't think we knew about whips until they started dropping. I could be making this up but I have an insanely vague memory of some early 85 slayer player on the forums raising hell because there weren't enough rewards to justify the brutal grind Og Slayer had on release. Maybe they kept it out of game to keep it a secret from the cache? I do remember seeing whips sell for 70-86 mill on the first day before slowly drifting to 30 some mil for a bit then 10 mil for awhile. The original special was better too if I remember. Early players who had it were super lethal in pvp if they were rolling out in blk hide there was little anyone could do. Great video! My account is turning 20 this October this brought some old memories back
Man Runescape was the most epic game of my childhood. I started in Late 2001. I personally love skilling and this was back when skilling was so important. Now its just watered down and it's all about PVM and PVP. I just recently picked Runescape back up again about 6 months ago and was saddened to see my favorite skillers in mining, smithing, and fishing were basically irrelevant lol
skilling was insane in rs classics basically there was no ge and trading for items in bulk was hard. I got 2200+ skill total on osrs and 19x 99s and let me tell you i just got the 99s to max out, i never skilled to make money, as most gp is from pvm and or slayer. At the end of rs classcis i had 55 attack 73 stre, 53 defense, 67 hit points, 62 magic , 25 range 75 cooking 73 fishing, 62 mining, 53 smithing, 53 woodcut. I was proud of the 62 magic as you know in runescape classics magic was insanely expensive i remmeber spending one weekend getting earth staffs and steel plate bodies from the wildy maze then buying 2500 chaos runes.
AYOOO back in the day I got the RS book "Betrayal at Falador" and in the book, they reference finding an Adamant sword which was apparently "rare/really prestigious" and at the time I was like "????? it's adamant lmao" and now I get it! :D
That was a fun book that really illustrated the reality of Scale Theory. I was blown away by how long they said it took to travel from say Edgeville to Falador when you could make the walk in about a minute in game.

Wow, this was an incredible deep dive into Runescape's development history. Honestly even with all the research I did for Time Traveller Ironman I still learned so much. Nice work!
Thank you! This means a lot coming from one of my biggest inspirations for resurrecting my channel. Love your series!
This was great make another. I went to your channel thinking you have been doing this forever because of how well polished it was
Thank you! To be fair, I did start making videos on this channel in 2007. Just a very long break in between.
This brought back so many good memories, thank you for making it!
Also, the level of research and time it would have taken to make this video shouldn't go unnoticed. Well done!
Glad to hear it, stay tuned for more nostalgia trips coming soon!
Mam comes outta a 14 year dry streak with some decent content. Nice one fella
It's worth noting that when whips came out, they cost ~60m gp, and they attacked as fast as throwing knives which made them massively op... Jagex had to nerf to what it is today.
As someone who's also super intrigued in runescape classic and rs2, this video was a real treat!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The next video was delayed unexpectedly but it will be a nice tribute mostly to some niche memories from RS2 as well as a couple from Classic. Stay tuned!
This is an AMAZING video! I'm on a historic runescape binge rn. Well made and very organized! I'm HOOKED!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! The next historical video is almost complete. Stay tuned...
In my heart, I want to believe you had already written your Green Day joke and we just happened to upload our cover *the day* before this well researched and well written video was uploaded.
That's exactly what happened lmao
I wonder if they are holding a smithing update hostage, out of spite for Bluerose13x
This was great, love this kind of content. Would love to see more video essays/time pieces.
The main series on this channel coming soon won't be in that same format, but it should be very similar in spirit to what you're looking for.
I got a good laugh out of the mind goblin joke 🤣 Love the illustration of it!
I played RS around 2005-2010 then stopped. But started watching content about it just recently starting 2020, and lemme tell you this video in particular is hitting me with tons of nostalgia lol. I specifically remember working my 15 yr old ass off to get the "meta" items of the era back in 2010.
Great video pal, I hope you make more!
This is a great video. You can tell that you are a true fan of runescape.
Thank you!
Great bluerose13x history!
Purple cape + Full rune in RSC = 💯
@@BeastFable I've got another RSC era video nearing completion that should be out soon. Stay tuned if you enjoyed this one!
this is the runescape we all would want to play again, if the devs ever bring it back, its the graphics that captivated all of us to play this game.
Great video man, keep it up. I loved the references to your personal rs experience.
Love this video, I hope this video leverages your content to the right people and you smash it!
The next historical video is coming very soon and something tells me that you're going to appreciate a lot of the references and jokes. Stay tuned!
I didn't know like ANY of this :)
Glad you could learn something new! Lining up everything to happen in timeline order revealed a lot of interesting patterns.
I remember being a total knob back in the day and I'd do sessions with a friend of mine almost like in a sweatshop
just playing for hours and hours doing barrows in the most non-minmax way cuz we barely knew wtf we were doing
and then 2 items dropped including the guthans spear which was worth a crapload of money back then and the dharok chestpiece.
We were screaming like crazy haha
Really cool runescape history lesson, and clearly a lot of work was put into this video. Bravo
Thank you! Most of the research went toward the main series on the channel which will be premiering in about a week and a half. Stay tuned!
Forgotten but not lost, well done lad.
me currently rocking the 2007 bis because I just started again and wanted it from my childhood.
Been waiting on a new video ever since your falador park one!
Whips were going around pretty soon after they released. I remember being dumbfounded how many people had high enough slayer that soon.
Class video this is a proper nostalgia trip and it's well presented! And humorous :D Looking forward to future content!
Thank you! Stay tuned for more very soon.
Incredibly underrated video! 10/10 loved it!
Thank you!
Cool video my guy. Great editing and quality.
Nothing beats seeing that dragon chainmail the first time seeing it
ahh the good old days of og runescape! I remember having zero idea what I was doing haha
I'm glad to hear it! The new series dropping here soon should be of great interest to you then. Stay tuned!
"You probably still have an obsidian cape and a combat bracelet today in old school" I DO NOT LIKE BEING CALLED OUT LIKE THAT THOOO
I did do Recipe for Disaster last year though, so I have the Barrows gloves.
NOOB
Great video - glad I got recommended it by the algorithm! :)
Thank you! I'm really glad to see the algorithm pushing the video to the right audience.
S tier video! Thank you for sharing this with us all, it's great
Thank you! Check out some of my inspirations if you haven't for some great content: Colonello, Mote Plox, and July the RuneScape Historian.
High quality video... I love those kind of stuff, maybe consider making Ranged/Magic BiS for RS2/2004 onwards
insane commitment and well elaborated research!!!
Thank you! It was a lot of fun to put together and it was a very nostalgic journey for me.
Nice video bro. I'd love if you did a video of the BiS gear from OSRS release day until OSRS in 2024
I'm hoping to make that video one day as well.
So incredibly well researched!
I love the video and the info is way neat. But that Boston Harbor line got me good 😂
Thank you for that
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Damn, that I Mahatma I pk video really brings back some nostalgia. Great video. :)
I remember when trimmed armor came into RuneScape. It was so expensive. I was like 12 years old and I thought it was the craziest thing ever
Never forget the kind players who would offer to trim yours too for free.
That was a really well made and interesting video!! 😃👍🏼👍🏼 I’ve been playing since roughly ‘05/‘06 and I learned a lot there, particularly about classic, which I never actually got to play. Nice job! Subscribed! - Machinist_2
Thank you! I always say that any day that you learn something new is a good day.
Cripes, I remember living through some of these. Abyssal Whips were the shit for awhile, especially with their special that guaranteed a max hit. You saw someone in Castle Wars with one, you died.
I hope we can expect more content out of you. This was great
The main series of this channel is premiering very soon. Stay tuned!
Imagine finding our that you're not currently in BIS from a classic portion of this video... Not me, no sir.
This was a very well made video, definitely earned a sub
Thank you! We are hoping to release many more very well made videos in the near future as well.
Keep it up hamosrs this was a great video and concept keep it up brother ✊👍💪
Thank you! Stay tuned for the main series of the channel which will be very similar in spirit, but a totally different concept.
Hot damn- a video this long with this great quality on a channel with less than 1.5k subs? Say it ain't so.
Great video.
Stay tuned for more!
Oh man. I'm looking forward to more of this haha
in the early days, after some months anyway.. everyone was aiming for typically using addy legs, plate, kite and Baxe " which i miss the aesthetics of" and then the rune med helm.
For sure, there is absolutely a difference between what we know as mathematically best today vs. what was wanted or even possible at the time.
Very cool to see this in a video. Some of these things you've always just wondered
The video i never thought i needed but definitely did. Very well done sir! Sub well earned!
Thank you! Stay tuned for more very soon.
Awesome and very well made video man very interesting and chill watch keep it up bro :)
RuneScape really was my first video game love ❤️
throwback af, andrew gowers new game is gnna be so hype
It really does look like it has a lot of potential to be great.
Deserve more subs for sure! Amazing vid
Started playing RS in 2006-2007 when I was 10 years old. I have had huge breaks but I still play now 2024🤙
amazing video man, little time capsule
It’s crazy how I’ve been watching these videos and I haven’t played RuneScape since 2007 I’m 24 now I miss it sometimes
Check out Old School RuneScape for a fun nostalgia trip.
Great video! Love the in depth research!
Keep it up!
after my previously mentioned setup we got to use the dragong bax, full rune " often chain for looks"and a dragon med for the pimps
A quality made video, only a few minutes in but going to sub and like to show support.
Thank you so much! We have big plans for a unique new series coming soon that you won't want to miss.
Ayy, 1000th subscriber! Great video keep up the great work :)
best in slot
Did ds In the first week knew nite.❤ 😢 HE helped me start.... then rs3. Now back to osrs. I played it all
Dude nice I love these timeline videos!
I'm glad you enjoyed it - stay tuned for more!
Yo this video rules! Hope to see you do more in the genre :)
Thank you! Definitely more to come. The main series hitting the channel soon will be similar in spirit but a unique twist on how it's presented.
What a good and underrated video. GGs brother.
Earned yourself a sub dude. What a well made video, I was invested the whole time! Love the small jokes, the GF who went to another school was gold
Thank you! And yet I still somehow butchered the delivery by saying January instead of February 15th.
@HamOSRS
This timeline sounds accurate to me.
You may want to check out OpenRSC then. Several different possible variations of the original game with like minded individuals in the community.
If you make a Ironman account then they become very important 😂
skilling was insane in rs classics basically there was no ge and trading for items in bulk was hard.
@@HamOSRS I’ve never actually finished it, I was in like 5th grade when it came out, but they’re all currently on my Good Reads list haha - subbed btw, solid video
You got linked in the World of Runescape discord (WoW merged with Runescape). Excellent video.
Great irony that my old videos from 15 years ago had dedicated haters paying me a visit from the WoW forums! Full circle. Looks like an awesome project by the way. Looking forward to seeing the finished product.
