Tom you are addressing me in this as well. Were it not for wonderful people like yourself, I would not be living here. It is the few backward thinking people who cause these issues. My experience is that having lived abroad for most of my life and then moving to England, I am able to see the UK with new eyes, I haven't had decades of political dripfeeding. There is a lot that is brilliant about this place, there are some things that are faulty. Maybe not new immigrants, but immigrants who are established really do have insights that are worth considering by the new citizens, we have a massive amount to contribute as well as huge passion. Moving to the UK for me was immensely costly not in a financial way, but it costs you everything. The loss is about as close to dying one can get. One's entire history is obliterated, goodbye family, friends, memories, food specialities, smells, pets and a million other things. Having left almost everything behind, we have no option but to do everything we can to rebuild our lives. To rebuild and become integrated into British people's lives would be wonderful, but it's hellish difficult because the British culture is not always inclusive.

I'm 36 years old. Half arab. When I was in school someone told me to go back to my country. I told him I was born here and my mother is white English. The kid asked the teacher if I was British. She replied "just because a dog is born in a barn, doesn't make it a horse" it hurt me so deeply that even to this day I haven't forgot about it. I know exactly how Sangita feels.

It's a complete lack of education I was similar to Anna a few years ago although I'd never phone a radio show and say it out loud. Then I took a course in healthcare, studied sociology, psychology, as well as the medical field of interest and have done a complete 360 on everything. Tbh it was remarkable and only achievable through proper education. There are so many people out there like i used to be who feel they're relatively smart and informed but they've been duped by certain sections of the media and those around them. Usually their families who also lack the right information. Honestly if the course I done was made mandatory to all adults I genuinely feel there would be a seismic shift in people's opinions and who they vote for.

My best friend did that and the questionnaire and our history you have to know is far more than most people born here will ever know. I got my DLA took off me 8 years ago, It was a year after I'd nearly died from severe sepsis (at the age of 17,righr before my exams) my body was still massively in tatters, I had an ileostomy bag that repeatedly leaked, I have hypermobility and osteopersosis so my joints and bones are in a terrible state. I went to an assessment to renew my benefits, they decided I wasn't entitled to any rates. One of the reasons cited was because I opened a bottle lid (the flip cap) in front of the assessor. I appealed, lost, I went to tribunal and I was made to feel like I was lying and that I should just get on with my life from the DWP spokesperson. The doctor and judge were visibly shocked at what was being said. They awarded me low rate care and no mobility, the judge told me to reapply and with the further evidence I had id probably get better rates (they couldn't accept how bad I was because it was after the reassessment process had started a year before. It scarred a young me so much, how i was treat I questioned whether I deserved it, whether the DWP was right. Fast forward to today, I haven't been able to work a single dya of my life. I have multiple surgeries every year because surgeons literally can not fix me. I finally got the courage to apply for pip during lockdown and I was instantly awarded high rate care and mobility. I'm not the only one I know who's had similar experiences with the underqualified assessors and broken welfare system. If it wasn't for the support of my mother and father, I'd be dead by now through suicide because I wouldn't have been able to afford to exist.
It's all about skin colour for these people. Pure and simple. I sound like an English person, I act like an English person, I've lived in England all my life. If I spoke to someone on the phone they would think I'm totally English. But in person it's a different thing.

You absolutely are all of those things. I'll be honest, I haven't been proud to be British for a long time. It usually means when I'm abroad, people will often flirt with me for my accent or tease me over crumpets, but within the UK I haven't been proud to be British for a decade plus now. Though there's another side to it where I try to remind myself that it means that I'm part of a multicultural group of people and something that can be beautiful. But that beautiful thing has been sick for a very long time and it needs to have that sickness cured.
Same here. I haven't felt like we havent much to proud of for a long time. And it hurts because I love it so much, deep down, if that makes sense. Like seeing a family member you love with all your heart doing something destructive or totally wrong that makes you worry for them and embarrassed of their behaviour yet deep down you still love them so much. There are things I hate, things that are embarrassing, things we need to address. But I only feel like that because I care so much about it and think we can be so much better. The people who think it's wonderful or those who harken back the old days and continually whinge and moan are both burying their heads in the sand. We need to work at improving things but to do that, we have to face our faults and be a bit more humble instead of being blindly patriotic or longing for this wonderful Britain that never really existed - the people who think the era they grew up in was some sort of paradise. They don't seem to realise that they feel like that because they were children with no responsibilities and could enjoy themselves free of worry about the issues facing the country and the world. And they think everything now is bad and blame people younger than themselves which is odd in itself considering it's the older generations who run and ruin the world. Their lack of insight is baffling. I hope things improve but can't see it getting better for a long time. People are becoming so insular and hateful. I fear our country and politics are gradually becoming more Americanised and that's something we should all be very worried about. Look at the state they're in.
It was the Brexit leave campaign that started me feeling less proud to be British. Not only the blatant xenophobia of so much of the pro-Brexit arguments but the British exceptionalism of so much of the anti-EU propaganda. These countries were our neighbours and friends but no insult, it seems, was too crass for vote-leave to use.

The people now termed English came from Germany, Denmark and Holland. Mixed with the British and later Norwegians and Scandinavians to create England before the Norman Conquest. If you want purebred Britishness it doesn't exist, for even though in pre-roman times Wales, Strathclyde and Cornwall were and are the last bastions of our Celtic heritage, immigrants from Spain ( Silures) and others were always being accepted in . I didn't listen to the show in mention but, your heartfelt response was palpable. Myself being born in Exeter, leaving this country to SA at 12 and, spending 40 + yrs there has taught me many things. 1. The racism/apartheid in SA was a political construct. 2. The UK being a prior Empire, is still viewed as such. But, in the 21st century many in the UK still believe in Empires and colonies. Mostly the older generation. If the argument is that "you are not white, therefore you don't belong" is supposedly valid, then, why don't we "the English" like Roma gypsy's, the Irish, Italians, French, German or any other supposed "white race"? I have traced both side of my parents 500 + years, and I can say this. After listening to how this presenter has been treated, I don't care to be British anymore.

The Ukrainians aren't doing too well in Ireland. Many of the Irish who said they'd take them in soon changed their minds & they had to put many in empty warehouses. A lot were put in places like Lisdoonvarna, out on the West Coast with no shops except small ones & no facilities. There are also many Africans living in Ireland, not popular with the Irish population of 5.5m.

Tom you are addressing me in this as well. Were it not for wonderful people like yourself, I would not be living here. It is the few backward thinking people who cause these issues.
My experience is that having lived abroad for most of my life and then moving to England, I am able to see the UK with new eyes, I haven't had decades of political dripfeeding. There is a lot that is brilliant about this place, there are some things that are faulty. Maybe not new immigrants, but immigrants who are established really do have insights that are worth considering by the new citizens, we have a massive amount to contribute as well as huge passion.
Moving to the UK for me was immensely costly not in a financial way, but it costs you everything. The loss is about as close to dying one can get. One's entire history is obliterated, goodbye family, friends, memories, food specialities, smells, pets and a million other things. Having left almost everything behind, we have no option but to do everything we can to rebuild our lives. To rebuild and become integrated into British people's lives would be wonderful, but it's hellish difficult because the British culture is not always inclusive.

I'm 36 years old. Half arab. When I was in school someone told me to go back to my country. I told him I was born here and my mother is white English. The kid asked the teacher if I was British.

It's a complete lack of education I was similar to Anna a few years ago although I'd never phone a radio show and say it out loud. Then I took a course in healthcare, studied sociology, psychology, as well as the medical field of interest and have done a complete 360 on everything. Tbh it was remarkable and only achievable through proper education. There are so many people out there like i used to be who feel they're relatively smart and informed but they've been duped by certain sections of the media and those around them. Usually their families who also lack the right information. Honestly if the course I done was made mandatory to all adults I genuinely feel there would be a seismic shift in people's opinions and who they vote for.

My best friend did that and the questionnaire and our history you have to know is far more than most people born here will ever know. I got my DLA took off me 8 years ago, It was a year after I'd nearly died from severe sepsis (at the age of 17,righr before my exams) my body was still massively in tatters, I had an ileostomy bag that repeatedly leaked, I have hypermobility and osteopersosis so my joints and bones are in a terrible state. I went to an assessment to renew my benefits, they decided I wasn't entitled to any rates. One of the reasons cited was because I opened a bottle lid (the flip cap) in front of the assessor. I appealed, lost, I went to tribunal and I was made to feel like I was lying and that I should just get on with my life from the DWP spokesperson. The doctor and judge were visibly shocked at what was being said. They awarded me low rate care and no mobility, the judge told me to reapply and with the further evidence I had id probably get better rates (they couldn't accept how bad I was because it was after the reassessment process had started a year before.
It scarred a young me so much, how i was treat I questioned whether I deserved it, whether the DWP was right. Fast forward to today, I haven't been able to work a single dya of my life. I have multiple surgeries every year because surgeons literally can not fix me. I finally got the courage to apply for pip during lockdown and I was instantly awarded high rate care and mobility. I'm not the only one I know who's had similar experiences with the underqualified assessors and broken welfare system.
If it wasn't for the support of my mother and father, I'd be dead by now through suicide because I wouldn't have been able to afford to exist.
It's all about skin colour for these people. Pure and simple. I sound like an English person, I act like an English person, I've lived in England all my life. If I spoke to someone on the phone they would think I'm totally English. But in person it's a different thing.
Your not British, stop pretending to be one. Your ancestors should have thought twice when they sold their country to come here for a few pounds, lest you suffer from this identity crisis now.

The sad thing is .. yes, there are surely thousands more - an overwhelming majority of open minded, kind people - and they are active, they send wishes. The views Anna expressed are WIDELY held in England. It is NOT new phenomenon as I have known this ALL of my life. I exist in the North of England and this level of Bigotry is Standard, excepted and promoted. I wish it wasn't this way but it IS.

I have experienced the opposite as well though, but it seems the former are much more vocal if they think you would agree with them, which to be clear, I absolutely do not. They only think I would because I am white and grew up in Africa.

I'll be honest, I haven't been proud to be British for a long time. It usually means when I'm abroad, people will often flirt with me for my accent or tease me over crumpets, but within the UK I haven't been proud to be British for a decade plus now.
Though there's another side to it where I try to remind myself that it means that I'm part of a multicultural group of people and something that can be beautiful. But that beautiful thing has been sick for a very long time and it needs to have that sickness cured.
Same here. I haven't felt like we havent much to proud of for a long time. And it hurts because I love it so much, deep down, if that makes sense. Like seeing a family member you love with all your heart doing something destructive or totally wrong that makes you worry for them and embarrassed of their behaviour yet deep down you still love them so much.
There are things I hate, things that are embarrassing, things we need to address. But I only feel like that because I care so much about it and think we can be so much better.
The people who think it's wonderful or those who harken back the old days and continually whinge and moan are both burying their heads in the sand. We need to work at improving things but to do that, we have to face our faults and be a bit more humble instead of being blindly patriotic or longing for this wonderful Britain that never really existed - the people who think the era they grew up in was some sort of paradise. They don't seem to realise that they feel like that because they were children with no responsibilities and could enjoy themselves free of worry about the issues facing the country and the world. And they think everything now is bad and blame people younger than themselves which is odd in itself considering it's the older generations who run and ruin the world. Their lack of insight is baffling.
I hope things improve but can't see it getting better for a long time. People are becoming so insular and hateful. I fear our country and politics are gradually becoming more Americanised and that's something we should all be very worried about. Look at the state they're in.

It was the Brexit leave campaign that started me feeling less proud to be British. Not only the blatant xenophobia of so much of the pro-Brexit arguments but the British exceptionalism of so much of the anti-EU propaganda. These countries were our neighbours and friends but no insult, it seems, was too crass for vote-leave to use.

The people now termed English came from Germany, Denmark and Holland. Mixed with the British and later Norwegians and Scandinavians to create England before the Norman Conquest. If you want purebred Britishness it doesn't exist, for even though in pre-roman times Wales, Strathclyde and Cornwall were and are the last bastions of our Celtic heritage, immigrants from Spain ( Silures) and others were always being accepted in . Anyone who thinks they are white English is in fact an immigrant from Europe.

I have also lived in several countries in different continents and in both England and Scotland and encountered a fair amount of abuse myself, as did my children. I want to give Sangita a really big cuddle, because I have an understanding myself of how painful this kind of bigotry and abuse is. In the case of one of my children they also suffered constant verbal abuse and physical assault.
How are you any better than Anna when you speak about an entire nation of people in such a way?

I didn't listen to the show in mention but, your heartfelt response was palpable. Myself being born in Exeter, leaving this country to SA at 12 and, spending 40 + yrs there has taught me many things. 1. The racism/apartheid in SA was a political construct. 2. The UK being a prior Empire, is still viewed as such. But, in the 21st century many in the UK still believe in Empires and colonies. Mostly the older generation. If the argument is that "you are not white, therefore you don't belong" is supposedly valid, then, why don't we "the English" like Roma gypsy's, the Irish, Italians, French, German or any other supposed "white race"? I have traced both side of my parents 500 + years, and I can say this. After listening to how this presenter has been treated, I don't care to be British anymore.
Sadly not just the older population, I live in an area where younger people seem to take pride in their assertions that you must be white to be British. It also has the highest Brexit vote in the country. It is a huge problem, a minority group for sure but a big group none the less.
I wish I was Russian. Because then I wouldn't live in a town where I was in the minority.

The Ukrainians aren't doing too well in Ireland. Many of the Irish who said they'd take them in soon changed their minds & they had to put many in empty warehouses.
A lot were put in places like Lisdoonvarna, out on the West Coast with no shops except small ones & no facilities.
There are also many Africans living in Ireland, not popular with the Irish population of 5.5m.
The sad thing is expect nothing less from certain people in this country. Born and bred here, paid my taxes all my life then to hear certain folk who’ve never worked in their life that I’m the problem🤷🏾♂️ I’m proud of my Jamaican heritage but I’m proud to be English at the same time, not that it matters to certain folk because the melanin in my skin.
I'd rather stand shoulder to shoulder with a black man who loves this country than a white man that hates it. But English remains an ethnicity, just like a blonde guy having a Chinese passport doesn't make him Chinese.
Personally the problem isn't any given immigrant or descendant of. Its the colonies that still fly the flag of the country they came from instead of the British or English flag. When local signs in London start getting written in Bengali, you have a colony.
You can't be Jamaican and English. That's as absurd as me (an actual Englishman) saying that if I go to Jamaca I become Jamaican lol.
