The most frustrating "railfans" (I use quotation marks on purpose) to me are those who are so firmly stuck in the past that they deride everything new as "trash" or similar without having any idea about said new thing. This happened a ton with Caltrain electrification for example. To any normal observer, the new KISSes are undoubtably a massive improvement for the performance and potential of Caltrain. Far better acceleration, more environmentally friendly (at least for the immediate area), lower dwell times than gallery cars and visually a huge jump into current times. They are trains you can actually show off with. Yet wouldn't you know it, loads of "railfans" defended the hell out of the F40s and gallery cars, despite the fact that they are bulky, cumbersome and outdated designs that (in the case of the cars) should've gone out of service decades ago. These people don't actually support railroads as a means of meaningful transport, they see them as open-air museums where they can observe their favourite dinosaurs for free. That's why I use quotation marks for them. I believe a real railfan has to have an eye for the everyday operations of a company/service and has to be mature enough to realise that what they might personally prefer, might not actually be best anymore for the operator.
This is coming from the manager of this channel since I love to watch your videos! We have 3 different railfans on our team, each a little different and just as enjoyable. I railfan too and see myself as an informative type of person who really likes to spend time learning and telling about history on railroading. I like to know a bit of everything, especially if I meet new railfanners who like to learn, it's fun! Thanks for this video, it is pretty cool that you make these videos and would like to see a part two! You are speaking straight facts! I would also say I am a person from the past a bit, not liking ALCs, Chargers, you get the memo. I am more of a classic and vintage locomotive and historical enjoyer. At least none of us are foamers haha! I've met some before, most are really nice and relaxed, and if they are on any of our videos we just smile and roll with it, I do tend to ask the editor to edit the sounds out sometimes if it gets a little hectic. Again, love the content man, keep it up!
I’m relatively new to railfanning, and I can definitely see a little bit of each in me, but I tend to be more of a normal railfan. Great video, love your channel 👍
@@epicsnake21 I started about July this year, but I never really got the chance to go out and watch trains, though I have been seeing more and more lately.

I try not to do this cuz everyone in the train spotting/Railfanning community hates them so any opportunity I get i head to get freight. Great video :)

i used to be a foamer but now that ive grown up ive become the normal railfan / nerd railfan (for reasons outside of railfanning), and i ain't mad if i see a gevo, im just happy to see any train
For the part 2 we need, the chasing foamer, the trespassing foamer, the person who wants the perfect camera angle(keep switching it up before the train comes), the person you always like elevation (I’m looking at you drone man), and the one who goes out in the rain, sleet, or snow for the shot
1:11 omg I just had like a flash after seeing up 6285. Im a relatively new conductor and my first ever trip home we stalled on a hill in that unit for 17 hours haha
Dude, you absolutely nailed it! I am a normal railfan. I get along with the info railfan that has access to all the different systems and info. I try to avoid foamers for fear of being guilty by association. You left one type off the list: the closet railfan, aka the railroad employee who outwardly makes fun of train buffs, but secretly inside loves trains themselves but doesn't want to get any ridicule from their co-workers
@@BNSF1458 A sub part of your part 2 could be railfan methods. I personally like guerilla railfanning. I rarely sit in one place for very long (exceptions are formal railfan parks). I just drive around until it's train time, quickly jump out, get the shot, then back on the road. I mostly stick to an area within 200 miles of home. I know people who sit for hours in the same spot, or drive cross country etc.
Another nice video! I definitely encountered the foamer foamer, especially going to folkston over the few years. I’m kinda a nerd foamer for sure. I’m surprised you didn’t include horn foamer/horn nerd in this clip. I don’t think I know any GEVO enjoyers.
The thing I love about living in northern Vermont is that there are very few railfans up here. I love going out alone or just with another local. No screaming, no foaming over crap. Being more on the introverted side, I almost prefer being alone when railfanning unless it is one of my friends. The only time I have actually "screamed" at anything was when I was driving home from work in April 2017 and heard the St Albans dispatcher giving track south to BC Rail 4611. And it was more of a surpried WTF at hearing the scanner traffic than foaming over a train. Having never seen BC Rail in Vermont before and not having any heads up I was quite surprised. Needless to say I did not foam over the train at all. just chased it like any sane railfan.
im a bit of a combanation between normal railfan and nerd railfan. I am still obtaining new information, mainly on the CPKC (former KCS) Shreport and Heavner Subdivisions.
There is this one station on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line named Bound Brook and Union and my god the amount of framers there are. This is probably because the Lehigh Line runs through there and will commonly have good equipment and people just foaming their asses off over a NS Heritage Unit
Nice video man! I love all locomotives, steam, diesel, electric, whatever! I will say the one thing that, I guess you could say "annoyed" me was all the comments on the one video where the Big Boy assisted a stalled freight, and people were saying "THE BIG BOY SHOVED A TRAIN OVER THE HILL BECAUSE ALL OF THE LOCOMOTIVES ON THE HEAD END BROKE DOWN!", to which I tried to tell them, you can't stick ANY locomotive, especially the Big Boy the rear of a train with nothing on the head end operating, because you could end up at least breaking knuckles, or at worst, pushing cars off the track and causing a derailment! And all the responses I got were, "THE BIG BOY IS STRONGER THAN 10 DIESEL LOCOMOTIVES, THE BIG BOY CAN HAUL A 5 MILE LONG TRAIN, etc, etc!", and I like, "NO FREAKING DUH, PEOPLE! that why you DON'T put that much horsepower on the rear without having a single operating locomotive on the head end!" That is in no way saying the Big Boy can't handle the train, but everything to do with possibly not shoving cars off the track and jeopardizing the locomotive or the safety of the crew running it and causing an even bigger problem! Okay sorry for the rant, but I feel some people get way to, I guess you would say, "caught up in the moment", and just start pushing hot takes around.
LMAO, too good George, man you come up with some funny S**T!!! I think I'm a "normal railfan" but maybe there's a "Photo Nerd Railfan" category HAH.. Happy Friday buddy! -OMK
Just checked out part 2, man I love these!!! But I'm more of a camera nerd trainer because for me the lighting, scenery etc is usually far more important than the loco, I mean I even shoot GEVO's in the right light etc.. HAH... I’m not too sure what type of Railfan I am, though I am someone that doesn’t have the best equipment but still works with what I’ve got. This also means little to no editing, and there might be some people who like content that’s generally raw and uncut. I may not fit any particular category. I’m a Big Norfolk Southern fan, and I really like Dash 9s & C6Ms. (As mentioned before, I might be the only person who’s crazy for any & all Waveform units) I almost never say anything during my Railfan Videos, so I’m very quiet and focused on the motive power coming my way. While I admittingly often care only about the locomotives themselves, I still make sure to capture the entire train as long as I don’t run into storage issues. I sometimes wave at the crews to see if they’ll notice me, but not in an overly excited way or anything. I do use the NSDash9 website to keep track of any loco info and I check the website every day basically. I’ll use it to detail the former number of each AC44C6M I capture in the video descriptions. I’m the kind of person who really cares about the Unit numbers and Designations, so I always detail those for every Railfan video I do. Idk how I do it, but I’m somehow very good at keeping myself composed even when there’s an HU or special unit of any kind in front of me.(like NS 4005 or 1067 for example) I may get excited in my mind, but I still manage to control myself in the moment. I don’t mean for this to come off as being all about me or anything, I just wanted to describe myself as a Railfan.
Very interesting of the different types of railfans. I am pretty much just a regular railfan, with aspects of a nerd railfan (so to speak). I'll admit, in the past, I did have opinions of gevos and locomotives in the past (depending on what locomotive it was), but I didn't really think things through too much then. I probably was a foamer in a way, but over time I improved myself and became a regular railfan but with some nerdy aspects. I'll also admit when, I unexpectedly see a specially painted locomotive, fallen flag, or something, I can get a little excited, sometimes too excited; I don't mean to get too excited, it just unexpectedly happens, but I do work on with not get too excited best I can. I also have opinions about some things, and maybe criticize them (unintentionally), but I always make sure to say my thoughts/opinions as respectfully as I can. I may have opinions like anyone else does, but I try to keep them as basic and respectful as can be. In short of it all. While I may have opinions and thoughts, I try to say them as respectfully as I can and keep things plain and simple enjoying railfanning and what I like. That's how I do things the best I can.
My road I currently work has still all EMDs as of now, but I do still enjoy the GEVOs of other roads around, as well as the more classic GEs like the Dash 9s and 8s
I'm one of these types for sure. 😂 I just like trains. My grandfather worked on the Milwaukee Road, and I've listened to stories and liked trains since I was a kid. I usually just state the engine(s) if I know (or can look it up) for those interested, and where I am while filming. I'm new to videoing trains, but photographed many over the years.
I think we all used to foam over trains when we were younger but now ofc I’m not a foamer. I just go out for something interesting and even if I don’t see it I make it fun (unless I literally see only GEVO Leaders on coal trains) I haven’t met a single foamer here in Nebraska! Just meet nice railfans!
I have met a railfan on multiple occasions that isn't an angry foamer, but just always angry. He always is yelling at other foamers about simple things (signals, departures etc.) That is why he gets the title of world's angriest railfan.
1:34 I’m like halfway to being a Nerd Railfan, I can differentiate between AC4400CWs and C44-9Ws as long as I’m on the left side of the unit, also ES44s and ET44s based on their radiators. (Also AC4460CWs on UP, I love those things.)
I'm not what you'd call an "active railfan" in that I don't go out to railfan. But then again I work for CN so I can just do it at work. I do enjoy doing rollbys in order to read the build dates on cars and such. Always neat to see how old some cars still in service are. (Oldest I've seen yet was 1970) On the GEVO point. I hate them from a railfan perspective but love them from a railroader perspective. They're by far the most comfortable and quiet engines out there (with the exception of maybe the odd SD75I) so they're the best to work with.
@BNSF1458 Yea. As for the other units we use. SD75Is (5600 and 5700 series) are quiet but old and not as comfortable (also they have no AC so in the summer you cook). SD70M-2s (8800 and 8900 series) are terrible, even isolated cabs are loud, and they always smell terrible, like the AC was plumbed through the bathroom. Dash 9s (2200, 2500, and 2600 series) are middling, not terrible but showing their age. The early 2500 series Dash 9s with the Canadian Comfort Cabs are louder but have more comfortable seats. CN has a neat roster of engines, but the GEVOs are by far the best for crews.
For me, I just catch trains. I’ll take whatever I get, and I try the best I can to not talk in my videos. If it’s a heritage unit, i get excited but try not to show that I’m excited. I try not to be the foamer kind but rather be the chill one
3:04 honestly, when I’m waiting for a train, after a while of not seeing one and seeing all gevos, I may be a bit disappointed at first but I’m mostly just glad to see something
Im personally the improv rail fan. I’m usually a plane spotter but usually spot next to the CSX/AMTRAK/VRE mainline in Virginia(Long bridge park if anyone’s asking). If I see a train, sure I’ll record it. But I’m mainly there for the aircraft
I used to be very hyper railfan. I started 5 years ago, I used to go crazy a lot or scream over trains, Ever since now I'm a calm railfan now. I don't scream and all that, I do get it how it feels tho when that happens. (A lot of people disliked me for this lol) I know another type of railfan lol. The ones with the off angle shots and tripod moving and talking and the big weird custom texts you know all that.. used to that a lot too but now I'm trying to be a professional recorder with perfect angles and and getting my shots center frame and not really talking a lot. And use text that makes the video look better Nice video talk lol.
I usually don't care if a heritage unit is leading or not. I just care about catching it at all. And usually I go railfanning even if there's nothing special. I'm sort of a foamer ngl. I've foamed over Amtrak 145 before.
I guess you could call me a GEVO Enjoyer, but for a different reason. The newer seats are very comfortable and Trip Optimizer runs better than Energy Management on the EMDs.
I used to be very big polish foamer But now when i see something rare I can get glad And Everything i see commonly is kind of the same But i kind of enjoy it
I guess I'm normal then. Me and my buddies are going out on Sunday railfanning what we call the diamond bracelet. We call it that because there are literally 5 diamonds withing 150 miles of each other all in a pretty much straight line. There was one day where we got 16 trains in a day, I'd call that one helluva good day.
I'm a railfan if I happen to be somewhere and a train happens to go by. Otherwise, I'm only a railfan that watches rail videos as a source of research for my layout. I'm not a perfectionist by any stretch, but striving for it never hurt either.
I’m classify myself as the chill railfan who enjoys seeing trains. My goal is to film as many as I can in a day. Yes I do like GEVOs because I think they’re good locomotives for hauling heavy freight. Still I just go out to film some nice content and enjoy the hobby.
What type are you? There's more coming so if you're none of these just wait until the 2nd part is out

For the part 2 we need, the chasing foamer, the trespassing foamer, the person who wants the perfect camera angle(keep switching it up before the train comes), the person you always like elevation (I’m looking at you drone man), and the one who goes out in the rain, sleet, or snow for the shot
Yes I have most those written down already haha, "the illegal guy" may or may not be based off you
1:11 omg I just had like a flash after seeing up 6285.
Haha, more parts to come so maybe that type will make it in. Thanks for watching!
@@signalupproductions That is a great idea, thank you! I defiantly will consider that, there's a fair amount to be discussed in that topic
I am a foamer but the chill one, I do sometimes get mad if I don’t see a heritage but most of the time I’m quiet and chill
Another nice video! I definitely encountered the foamer foamer, especially going to folkston over the few years. I’m kinda a nerd foamer for sure. I’m surprised you didn’t include horn foamer/horn nerd in this clip. I don’t think I know any GEVO enjoyers.
Horn enjoyer was one I thought of immediately after posting
You know me and Metal...
Horn enjoyers are sort of their own thing, I know people who love horns who don't even go out to see many trains at all lol
I fit into “ returning regular railfan” lol ( EMD fan here…)
My dad is the "Nerd Railfan" and when you did that facts screen, holy shit that was real, I laughed so hard.
Yes it's the same way here in Minnesota, always fun to railfan with a friend occasionally but I prefer solo. Saves so much drama and irritation
I guess I would be a little bit of everything from this list. Good video 👍
Cool, thanks!
@@BNSF1458 you're welcome
The goofy. The one who just emotes behind a fast moving train
That’s a cool video idea
im a bit of a combanation between normal railfan and nerd railfan. I am still obtaining new information, mainly on the CPKC (former KCS) Shreport and Heavner Subdivisions.
I went to see up 6706 coming trough the east a month ago and i saw lots of people and they werent foamers. lucky me!
There is this one station on NJ Transit’s Raritan Valley Line named Bound Brook and Union and my god the amount of framers there are. This is probably because the Lehigh Line runs through there and will commonly have good equipment and people just foaming their asses off over a NS Heritage Unit
Gevo life bro that with a touch of foamer makes for a wholesome life
Nice video man!
-OMK
Thanks haha, that will be in one of the future parts! Make sure you check out part two as well, just released it :)
Just checked out part 2, man I love these!!! Still don't fully fit into any of these that I know of, guess during the winter I kinda lean toward being a "Model Trainer" I've even said the phrase "I need that in HO scale" LMAO... But I'm more of a camera nerd trainer because for me the lighting, scenery etc is usually far more important than the loco, I mean I even shoot GEVO's in the right light etc.. HAH... Please make part 3 this weekend dude, having a blast with these! OMK @@BNSF1458

I'm one of the spotters/rail fans who know all the info and are constantly asked what things are
That's why you don't go around announcing that you have info lol
Unless you enjoy responding to 500 different messages per day
I’m not too sure what type of Railfan I am, though I am someone that doesn’t have the best equipment but still works with what I’ve got. This also means little to no editing, and there might be some people who like content that’s generally raw and uncut. I may not fit any particular category. I’m a Big Norfolk Southern fan, and I really like Dash 9s & C6Ms. (As mentioned before, I might be the only person who’s crazy for any & all Waveform units)
I almost never say anything during my Railfan Videos, so I’m very quiet and focused on the motive power coming my way.
Same here I’ve improved alot over the past couple years
My road I currently work has still all EMDs as of now, but I do still enjoy the GEVOs of other roads around, as well as the more classic GEs like the Dash 9s and 8s
What railroad is this
@@richharris9489 INRD
The ACE foamer should be one. Those foamers who loose their minds when they catch an ACE and freak out over the fact that its not a GEVO.
Hah I'm a little bit of an ACe foamer... but I never scream on camera or anything all just in my head
@@BNSF1458 I think everyone is an ACE foamer to some extent, but its funny to laugh at the loud ones for sure

Great video!
I’m the normal railfan I don’t know much about trains but I just go out to enjoy life and take pics of trains when I’m not plane spotting
I'm one of these types for sure. 😂
I just like trains.
Yeah same thing up here in Minnesota. But if you get going about 100 miles south of me to the twin cities theres a few foamers I can think of haha
@@BNSF1458 I bet there is Foamers in NE but I have met none unless it was For Big Boy lol. People Everywhere
I have met a railfan on multiple occasions that isn't an angry foamer, but just always angry. He always is yelling at other foamers about simple things (signals, departures etc.)
That is why he gets the title of world's angriest railfan.
(Oldest I've seen yet was 1970)
On the GEVO point. I hate them from a railfan perspective but love them from a railroader perspective. They're by far the most comfortable and quiet engines out there (with the exception of maybe the odd SD75I) so they're the best to work with.
GEVOs rule as far as the crew experience goes
I love the Minnesota “o” in your voice that makes the video 10x funnier
Also yeah I’m probably a bit of a nerd railfan xD

Im personally the improv rail fan. I’m usually a plane spotter but usually spot next to the CSX/AMTRAK/VRE mainline in Virginia(Long bridge park if anyone’s asking). If I see a train, sure I’ll record it. But I’m mainly there for the aircraft
i don't railfan, but if I get the opportunity to railfan one day, I would be the GEVO enjoyer.
When I watch trains I don't care what I see because it is mainly csx
Video idea Scream like a angry foamer everytime you see a gevo leader on a train
Train is Train, don’t care what it is if it’s a train I’m happy
That's good
I usually don't care if a heritage unit is leading or not. I just care about catching it at all. And usually I go railfanning even if there's nothing special. I'm sort of a foamer ngl. I've foamed over Amtrak 145 before.
I guess you could call me a GEVO Enjoyer, but for a different reason.
The newer seats are very comfortable and Trip Optimizer runs better than Energy Management on the EMDs.
volunteering at a museum makes me feel like a nerd lmao but its also very fun kinda became a foamer when the museum got an SD7 lmao
I used to be very big polish foamer But now when i see something rare I can get glad And Everything i see commonly is kind of the same But i kind of enjoy it
I’m normal now but when I was 5 I was a hard foamer 😂
Come to the UK if you like EMD. We have the opposite problem, 90% of freight locos are now an EMDs.
I might just do that sometime
3:06 I love the es40dcs
I guess I'm normal then. Me and my buddies are going out on Sunday railfanning what we call the diamond bracelet. We call it that because there are literally 5 diamonds withing 150 miles of each other all in a pretty much straight line. There was one day where we got 16 trains in a day, I'd call that one helluva good day.

I'm a mix if a normal railfan and nerd railfan, I can kinda tell what a locomotive is based off the number
Bro I'd take any six-axled locos any day of the week. All i get is a midnight local that consists of like 2 GP40-2s and 30 cars
I’m definitely the normal Railfan.
Im with you on those GEVO-enjoyers.
My opinion:
how dare they respect the units that replaced the veteran standard-cabs!
What do you mean? There were widecab units before the GEVOs that replaced standard cab units on mainline trains.
I’m classify myself as the chill railfan who enjoys seeing trains. My goal is to film as many as I can in a day. Yes I do like GEVOs because I think they’re good locomotives for hauling heavy freight. Still I just go out to film some nice content and enjoy the hobby.
Sounds great!
