Ya forgot about a bit of NS... the fact they sell half their fleet to "standardize" their roster... then wondering why they are so short on power after purging several locomotive classes.
I don't think i will get surprised if one day NS will lease Amtrak Chargers to supplement their power. I mean, they literally didn't do it in the past with Amtrak F40s, right....
@@ardiannurfatah5938chargers are kinda ass so don't count on it
@@THE_IRON_HORSE one day those will be the things you see pulling Amtrak trains, i'm sure of it.
@ardiannurfatah5938 daught it, they break down in gold weather, it could happen but eh
Fun fact: They’re also having a EOTD shortage which is why DPU’s at the rear are very common
BNSF is like the only railroad with a huge quantity of Dash 9s
NS still does, but their numbers are dwindling at a rapid pace.
Still have a large amount of Ex company units in there original scheme
cn has over a 100
😂😂😂
Bro ain't lying. frfr
I hate the fact that there aren’t seven class 1’s anymore.
Well, if you count Ferromex...
@@doblaje_a_la_medida we dont
same
It's only something worth hating if you aren't from the country that the railway that bought that seventh Class I railway comes from. I am, so I don't hate it.
@@furioussherman7265 your county didnt buy it
What I hate is that there's an ocean between me and the trains I'm interested in.
You like British trains, or am I just misinterpreting it?
@@TheBlueMarbleItself I like British trains. I find them more interesting.
I used to work for a shortline railroad as a locomotive mechanic, there were guys there who used to work for the class 1s before they made the switch to the shortline, they have told me stories about them, there was a guy who used to work for UP. He was a conductor, and from what he’s told me, he said that UP literally “owned him” and apparently it’s like that with all the class 1s. UP especially is the worst out of the bunch, I might go back to the railroad but if anything, you won’t catch me dead working for UP.
Ive heard the same. It’s why if I ever want to go into driving trains it’s gonna be for a commuter service
@@goldenstateaviation2861 or you could work a Class 2 instead. If you still want the freight route. That’s what I’m doing
good comment... but a word of warning for those who want to bail from their class 1 slavemaster... make sure you know whether or not the class 2 or shortline you go to pays in to *RAILROAD RETIREMENT* ... not all roads pay into it... for ALL the crap you have to put up with when working for a railroad, railroad retirement is definitely a decent reward... i would suggest BEFORE you make the jump, find out about it
From what I know it’s not like that with CSX at least recently I know a guy who works for CSX and says they treat him pretty well I also know a guy who used to work for CSX and said they gave the best benefits out of any class 1.
@@YourLocalHistorian I heard that too. I heard CSX went from being one of if not the worst class 1’s to work for, to being the one of the best. Only Class 1’s I heard were better at treating there employees was KCS “pre-merger” and BNSF. but. I did hear BNSF will work you like a dog tho.
“I like trains and I like yapping in-front of a microphone” perfect
BNSF just decides to do Heritage Hoppers instead, they are built different.
facts😂
You nailed the time off issue with the BNSF! You speaketh the truth!
Luckily we just got rest cycles. Depending on how the terminal voted it’s either 6 days on call 3 days off or 7 days on call 3 days off.
When it comes to modern class 1s, the only thing consistently worth your time railfanning are locals. As much as we hate on their road fleets, CN and BNSF have diverse and unique local/short haul fleets that should be documented before they go
Something I dislike on UP is the faded burnt locomotives. Nearly all the UP's I see are ether very dirty, extremely faded, or the flag is burnt or all of the above. The repainted units are nice, but who knows what they'll look like in 10 years.
Used to be that when they went through a fuel siding, they'd go through a wash as well. UP also figured out it costs about $40,000 to repaint a locomotive, so saving money while your fleet looks like Dante's Inferno RR is the name of the game.
For the Canadian railroads in particular, CP seems to have more of a "quality over quantity" and CN has more "quantity over quality"
I’m pissed off at BNSF because they had half a dozen blue bonnet gp60’s in great condition here in Fontana California. Everything was awesome, complete Santa Fe lashups then they disappeared. They all reappeared as f-ing pumpkins.
dude you dont have a sleep schedule...... CHEERS
Me neither honestly
1st step of joining the RR, no sleep schedule.
6:40 I Didn’t Know They Had A Livery For CPKC Yet And That Literally Looks Like It Would Be Either A Slightly Modified CP Unit Or AWVR 767 From Unstoppable 💀💀💀
I'm a Canadian but I also forgot about their cpkc livery and even tho I love Canadian Pacific I think the new livery just looks worse
Danm, I did not know that UP was planing on storing they're SD70Ms. That sucks ☹️
I used to see the UP SD70Ms all the time back in early 2010s, now it’s rare seeing one, I only saw one last year and this year
A Mich. shortline,-- LAKE STATE RWY.,got 5 or 6 ex. UP SD70's. The ones that are repainted look far better than any UP loco ever did.
@@user-mr3ct1dm9p When did this happen?
@@BNSF1458 Maybe about a year ago-- year and a half.
@@BNSF1458not all of the SD70MACs on Union Pacific are getting put to storage
I get to see BNSF (ex Santa Fe) 554 go past my house every day, local service. It's a b40-8w in warbonnet paint by the way
You are so right about the pink fading on cp liveries. I swear, one day I am going to have like a ACE under perfect light. And theres gonna be a barbie dream house on the back that ruins it all.
CSX’s Heritage aren’t fully painted because of what they were going for. They’re going for showing their different predecessors becoming one, CSX. If you ask me, it’s actually genius and a very unique way of honoring their heritage
Great video man! Love the editing and your take on each railroad company
Thanks man!
What I hate is that I can only record one railroad that people roast every time I mention it due to it using the Conrail logo.
The thing you said about the East Palestine derailment is insanely true. “There they go to derail another train” this, “they derail those trains on purpose” that. It was because of a hot axle. Most derailments are something else, like hitting a semi or a wrong set switch.
Two things I hate about BNSF are, they don’t have any heritage units and they don’t care about their War Bonnet units
Because the war bonnets are in terrible shape because they are old
@@Westernmarylandrwyoffcialyt I’ve seen older locomotives in better conditions that them
You're slightly wrong about the war bonnets. BNSF management actively hates them
There's still locomotives in santa fe and Burlington northern colors so they can't do nothing about heritage units rn
@@MystiC71038 Those are locomotives that weren’t repainted. They just slapped the BNSF logo onto them and called it good.
Can we be honest all class 1 roads are corrupt as fuck. The CSX heritage units is a massive fuck you to the past railroads.
How? Because they’re not fully painted? What CSX is going for is showing the railroads that make up their history as CSX. The heritage paint merges into CSX at the nose, and even though all are different, they eventually become one. It’s an awesome, unique concept and honestly kinda genius. I can’t understand why it’s so hard for railfans to be open minded. So many railfans have this attitude of “everything MUST conform to our liking or else it sucks, no exceptions” and it’s unbelievably obnoxious.
grow up
5:30 shows how little the general US population knows about how rail companies work.
Exactly
@58 One of the other things I hated about the NS derailment was the media constantly spouting nonsense about how the airbrakes were "civil war era", implying they were out of date and should be replaced with ECP brakes. I found this incredibly moronic as, while I agree that ECP Brakes are better from a technology standpoint, they aren't compatible with the airbrakes that, lemme see, EVERY OTHER COMMON CARRIER RAILROAD IN NORTH AMERICA USES, and NS would be shooting itself in the foot if they implemented it. Also, the brakes weren't even what caused the derailments, as it was overheated bearings that caused the cars to jump the tracks and the defect detectors failed to recognize it. Yeah, NS f*cked up and they should pay more money to the people of EP and need to hire more people to maintain their shit, but I also blame the media for its total f*cking incompetence in properly conveying the information to the general public, who now thinks that every derailment is some elaborate government scheme to break the economy or something.
I always love your videos after a LONG school day!
I was at Rochelle a couple weeks ago and caught 2 flared radiator SD70Ms leading. I Didn’t realize that was a catch that’s becoming rarer. Also caught an AC6000. That was pretty cool to see.
Sounds like a good day!
BNSF is my favorite out of the six class 1 railroads and it’s also the one I most hate because of the crap ton of Gevo’s they have! Thanks for showing my frustrations in this video! Keep up the great work! 👍
i think csx was going for a peeling back the layers look like underneath csx there is the cheesie system, seaboard system, lanchaster and nothern ,conrail you get the point kits literally Pelling back the layers of time .
I like that both CSX and NS have Conrail heritage units (as they should). It would be cool to see them running together as foreign power one way or the other.
I'm just glad CSX is doing heritage schemes at all. They're not doing it the way I'd like them to, but at least they're doing it.
"WHY AREN'T THEY FULLY PAINTED!!!!!!" - every foamer ever
I know, I know...
I can respect that. I just can’t stand people who say that they hate them and then not only don’t give a reason why, but are also not thankful in some way
Also BNSF 1458, I know you hate the Chessie one, but the first picture you showed of it looks really nice. Great photo selection.
@@TrainLover3268 this is facts
BNSF's biggest flaw is that it's not even a tenth as cool as either of it's halves.
This is so true
I can confirm I hate GEVOS (especially NS). Today, I was waiting for the afternoon departure of (the symbol NS 31M) which had a solo GEVO. So, when they were coming down the yard to grab their freight and go, I heard on my scanner "LOUD AND CLEAR" that their battery died on a NS ES44AC lmao. Frick NS and frick GE.
Former UP conductor here. I was one of the survivors of the 2014 Hoxie AR head on train crash. Working for UP wasn’t as bad back then. Great regular turn road pools, good home time between trips, and laying off wasn’t that hard to do. Just stay under 8 layoffs in a 90 day period.
I was in an SD70M when we were struck by the other train. Much better to be in than an SD40-2 in that situation.
2:27 i was dying of coughing because I absolutely hate that unit so much! I was laughing when you said 4014! 😂
Yeah I got a UP SD70M leader on Amtraks A1 Sunset limited a month back….but that was the last time I’ve seen one in the lead….even on the one local UP that runs near my house…no more SD70M leads…..just GEVOs of course now! So fun..
As a former UP engineer, it makes my heart go doki doki to see the urine box sd70m's getting sidelined. Some of the worst locomotives I've ran after the alc-42.
I don’t mind CSX’s heritage units too much. I’d sometimes picture them in full heritage paint and the results in those thoughts look off
I grew up, and still live by, the formerly Wisconsin central, now Canadian national main line between Fond du Lac and Slinger Wisconsin. I've seen a lot of Canadian national trains in my 35 years. And I don't think I've ever seen one that I would call Pink. The red that CN uses is more of a tomato red, and it just gets more orange as it fades. I personally like the CN colors, the old seargent stripe paint scheme is awesome, one of the boldest of all time. What's interesting to me about the CPKC new colors is that it's basically the CN livery, but the red goes 3/4 down the train before white stripe/black, instead of 1/4. CN is og and looks better. I agree, pretty uninspired and disappointing.
The thing I hate the most about CN is that they're pretty much strangling Amtrak long distance capacity for western Amtrak long distance trains with their Chicago - Carbondale line. How so? They're forcing Amtrak to run 7 superliners on the Illini and Saluki trains, taking away capacity from trains that need those superliners like the Zephyr, the Chief, the Empire Builder, the Texas Eagle, and the Capitol Limited. Also CN is just really bad to Amtrak in general, since they demanded Amtrak to pay for maintenance on a line that the Adirondack runs on last year.
Congress needs to repeal some railroad law from the past to give priority to Amtrak., one regional dispatcher in the upper midwest to route all rail movement
Not talking bad about this video. It gave me some laughs. I can't believe I watched all of it. Hats off to you sir. As a HO scale model enthusiast and not really a die hard rail fan...KCS runs along my drive to work, sorry CPKC, I happen to pay attention to rails. Being in Dallas and driving around, I do have the luxury of seeing a lot of different power, with the exception of CSX. Anyways, loved your dry sense of humor.
If I had to pick a favorite out of CSX’s recent heritage unit locomotive fleet, it would probably have to be No. 1869 the “Chesapeake & Ohio”
I have NS tracks right byy house and sometimes CSX runs a few trains also i feel prwtty blessed as a foamer!!
BNSF orange doesn't age all that well either. I really miss the Cascade green of the BN locos. BNSF=Better Not Start a Family...
Dash 9s are cooler then C6Ms
Facts
Dash 9s are straight up trash
2:27 I refer to that as Union Pacific's "Wokamotive."
For up 1979 a bit of a comparison is the KCs Bicentennial units back in 1976. Having grown up during the 70s in the midwest with the Trinity of SOO. CNW. MILW and later the decent spin-off WC. While two of the three class ones weren't fairing that well economically they certainly provided plenty of photo opportunities and more power variety. The one Saving Grace about CSX is that they are the last class one still running switchers but you have to go to Buffalo NY to see them
I saw an SD70M leading a Union Pacific freight train back in October 2023.
The first thing I thought of as soon as you started with "I Like Trains!" ...I thought of TomSka ADSM😂 If ya know, ya know
Great video! Why didn't you mention the Final Spike Tour (WHICH FOR SOME REASON IS ALL ON WEEKDAYS WHY CPKC WHY)?
I almost did but the video was getting long haha. It'll be going through MN right on my birthday, which is funny
So... Am presently applying to be a BNSF dispatcher, and your rag on BNSF made me chuckle.
only acceptable bnsf gevos are the early ones with nice horns
The SD70M’s are definitely on the outs, but I still see them going through the Roseville yard a lot. Both in consists and being serviced. There is a deadline there with about 20 of them with the number boards removed and the NIGX reporting mark spraypainted on them.
Great video 😁
In terms of the UP SD70m’s we have a YCHYC train that comes through our yard and I know the crew quite well and hang their EOT every night, they used to have 2 SD70m’s and now they run either 2 SD40n’s or a AC4400 that’s caught fire a few times and a Genset with it
Definitely, the biggest change I've noticed, that many others can probably tell you as well from going Class 1 to shortline, is a much more predictable type of schedule. Not only that, but unlike NS where basically everybody is going back and forth about seniority and instantly hating or looking the other way from you for being the new girl, shortlines or at least the one I work personally, is literally like that of a family type of vibe and work environment which definitely makes the job a lot easier to do and brings back the fun and enjoyment of it.
Totally agree about the CSX HUs. To me they look like a nice unit that was wrecked, then the cab was replaced with the cab off a different unit.
I kind of can't believe that UP is storing over 1,000 units that are just about 20 years old even though their GEVOs are the same age
Man, It’s a shame the SD70Ms are being put in storage, I love those units.
0:19 Bro, it worked. Amtrak 203 was leading 91 and I checked the footage again to see how perfect the lighting was.
Very beautiful video 10/10
UP has the point system too. And yes it sucks. You max out at 28. When you lay off you usually get 7 points per week day and like 10 or somethin on the weekends now? Idk they just changed them recently again. Doesn’t take long to stack up and takes 2 weeks marked up to get 4 points back. It’s annoying especially when real life strikes and you can’t show up to work. We also get 5 sick days for the entire year too…
I live in NS territory, so I pretty often see Dash 9s or AC44C6M's (God forbid I ever see a GEVO or ACE again) but I hate BNSF and CN with a burning passion. I'm already biased towards NS and CP, so that will forever dictate that I have beef with them, but I honestly hate the combination of orange and green for BNSF. The paint scheme itself is cool, just not a big fan of the colors. As for CN, they are the Penn Central of Canada. I get why people hate NS, but even NS isn't as bad as CN when it comes to derailments.
I'm obviously biased towards NS as is, but the one thing I love about them and their predecessors is how they have a tradition of running long-hood forward. I've never seen one myself, but it ain't Norfolk Southern if they don't run long-hood forward.
The gevo was made with North American safety cabs because originally many engineers and crews die in train derailments because the cab didn’t have any saftey features
The North American safety cab makes it safer for them and instead of it being a deadly job it’s more of a safer job and sure it’s rare to see the sd40-2 because they rarely use them as they aren’t good for freight service anymor
7:39 Yeah, the paint on cn’s Dc gevos is pretty faded. But it does give then some character, like with their p3s p5s and 1st gen k5hls.
I agree, but when everything is faded it won't look so great
VERY VERY good video... and for the record, the warbonnet paint scheme is the BEST in the history of railroading... (um, when the red ain't faded)
Before 1980 the Southern Pacific had impressive (40- 50mph)combinations going by a residential back yard between north 4th and sixth Avenue in Tucson. That guy probably didn't realize how fortunate he was. Learning to sleep next to massive noise takes time, like Amtrak stopped at a siding, all is quiet till 4, 6 or eight Loud Roarring beasts go by without any advance notice followed by a 400 or more wheels banging 4 at a time with 2 seconds between which are sure to wake up someone
I see a lot of sd70m in my area probably explains why UP is putting them into storage
you forgot to mention CSXs bad management until 2023
Reckon u could do a video on Australian railroad companies and there locos and livery’s?
I saw a lineup of UP SD70Ms with an ace thrown in and one was wrecked don’t know why I tried researching (UP 4602) and couldn’t find anything
To be fair tho CN doesn’t spend money unless they have to, where I live they still run IC SD70’s with the Death Star livery or whatever it’s called that’s why they keep a lot of they’re old fleet cause they still work and run so what’s the point of just getting rid of perfectly good SD70’s or even GP40’s so just having a basic 100 year anniversary livery isn’t very shocking to me tbh and apparently I caught one (forgot when) and I didn’t even know till like a year later
CN definitely keeps more of it's interesting power in Canada (obviously with exceptions) from what I've noticed, I wonder if it has to do with PTC requirements being different for Canadian railroads?
But i still dont get getting rid of the wc sd45s
@@BNSF1458Canada literally does not have PTC, thus a lot of the "interesting" units dont do cross border travel unless they're trailing
I live in Chicago next to the St. Charles Air line aka downtown connection to the Iowa division . I see the SD-70s almost every day only a handful are in CN paint . On occasion I will see EJ&E SD-38s more often GTW GP-38-2s and sometimes SD-40-2 /Gp-40-2 in CN/GTW/IC paint . I think EHH taught them to be like ICG which didn't repaint most of the former GM&O units.
I agree with you on most of your points, but I think the UP 1979 is the absolute best looking UP loco ever. So much so that I bought one for my model RR. Its also the only SD70M heritage unit which is my fav loco design.
My biggest gripe about UP is the all American flags they burn, scorch, smudge, soil and ruin on the sides of their loco fleet. Its fake patriotism.
The number 1 biggest thing i hate is PSR.
Same, it really screwed everyone over
@BNSF1458 especially since it means more GEs and fewer EMDs and other manufacturers if they exist anymore
The gp30 chessie system is my all time favorite locomotive.
Why is UP storing the 70M’s?
What did happen to the chessie system?
It merged with the Seaboard System to form CSX.
CSX said: "We take pride in our work" Yeah, they take pride in making the worst heritage units 💀
f a c t s
I have seen so many gevos that i do not see SD70ACe's anymore, im so happy when i see a GP38 which i see EVERY DAY or an H2 C44 which are nearly as common as gevos here
You know what sucks about class ones?? They treat their employees like crap, sub-humans! There is not enough emphasis on this, not enough transparency...
Honestly, BNSF should make heritage. I'd be okay with the crappy csx way.
As long as I can see an SP&S or DRGW Gevo or whatever.
Those are the two nuttiest claims I'm glad I hadn't heard till now about the East Palestine derailment. Then again, it's easy to see how people that think the world revolves around them would easily slip into "anything that ever happens is targeted at me." I'm sure class 1 railroads/the government would love to derail an entire freight train to go after one random person, sure. /s
I like the CPXC paint scheme, but _only_ because it reminds me of Unstoppable. Which isn't even the best train movie (that's be Atomic Train, you can't change my mind).
About CPKC, If KCS Didn't Run In Mexico, I Don't Think I'd've Been Against Its Formation As Much.
As someone who has driven past some of CNs SD60F’s they are looking horrid since mothernature is turning them pink
I guess cp had that problem too
The part about the SD70Ms getting thrown out of service, well I think they're doing that in favor of the rebuilt Dash 9s. They've been pulling dozens of the Dash 9s out of storage to be rebuilt to C6Ms (designated as C44ACMs by UP)
Guessing the list before watching
Gevos, rebuilds, psr, mow, retirement, repaints
Is it weird that I actually like how Warbonnets and CN locomotives turn pink over time? It reminds me of the petina you see on an old statue or antique firearm. I like it so much I even repainted a few HO scale locomotives to match it.
Have you ever filmed amtrak?
Not yet, actually
I’m a teenager who’s grown up around the railroad. I was wanting to work for BNSF, but now that I hear about some of the conditions the workers are put in, I’ll pay some more attention to the specifics of these companies.
I would work for UP, especially since UP runs through basically all of north Texas (where I’ve lived my whole life). But their pay is CRAP. A few months ago, I saw a job listing for conductors and *the pay? Oh, a casual **_$15/hr._*
But I’d say that if neither are good, I’d work for CPKC since they also run through generally close territory and think their future is bright, plus, they merged, they’re going to need more resources.
But, if you have any advice or anything for some odd reason, feel free to let me know; I’m all in.
I’ve worked for UP and now currently at BNSF as a machinist and all I can say is BNSF was once a great railroad until Katie Farmer took over. Same with UP, once Lance Fritz took over it all went to shit. At CPKC, I’ve only heard terrible things from the machinist about working in their shops. Most of them don’t even show up to their investigations anymore because they know they’ll be fired. In my opinion, it’s all the same. It’s literally a love-hate relationship. You love the work and the people you work with, but the leadership (or lack thereof)is absolutely garbage.
The New KCPS paint schemes look somewhat like AWVRR from Unstoppable. 😂 Great Video! 👍
Kansas City Public Schools has a paint scheme?!?!
@@csx_defectdetector Not yet I don’t think. I guess they’re brainstorming some ideas.
You know what really confused me. If these companies care so much about cost cutting, why don't they have the government buy the tracks, and then the government would have to pay for maintenance instead. That would be a massive cost save for them.
Have you ever heard the Norfolk southern meme? Its called Norfolk southern whats your function and it is just a compilation of all their derailments and car collisions. Also as someone who lives on the east coast, I can confirm that Norfolk Southern hits a lot of cars and trucks.
That's just truckers normally tho. I live near a CSX crossing that trucks get stuck on all the time, and sometimes get hit.
It’s not their fault some drivers are dumb as hell, and I’ve seen many videos under that description. I don’t find them funny in the slightest.
My favorite CSX heritage units are CSX 1871 (ACL), CSX 1836 (RF&P), CSX 1982 (Seaboard System), and CSX 1897 (Monon). My least favorites are CSX 1853 (NYC) and CSX 1850 (L&N). Both look bland and 1853's font is off.
Honestly as a CN locomotive I’m glad my brethren don’t go too pink just slightly orange. Also my heritage brethren are not very good looking locomotives.
You must live in a crazy area for people to take time out of their day to tell you about how the government is derailing trains. Respect
It's rural midwest, pretty typical
It’s odd seeing a Conrail heritage unit when you grow up around strings of coal cars and locomotives still wearing Conrail Quality. In fact my local loading facilities still have probably 10% of their rolling stock as old Conrail hoppers.
Problem is that BlackRock and Vanguard have interests in every RR except Buffett Northern and Warren is in lockstep with those hedgies in any case. No wonder they've PSRed to death.
im a locomotive painter for union pacific at jenks shop in little rock i remember when he got shit on by management to paint that pos all the people that helped make that unit including me hates it its the biggest employer scheme
You don't like 1979?! It's one of the best UP units!!! And I think the CN 100th units are goated. As for the CSX fade, the reasoning the shop guys said it's that "it's like we're pulling our history behind us"
1979 is just ranked below the other two special interest units. It doesn't have the same feel as 1943 or 1111. I think It could have looked pretty good if they'd changed a few things though
You’re a former? What railroad do you work for?
I think Arkansas have some SD70macs I live in Arkansas and we have some SD70macs on run through trains
