    I really like the methodology behind teaching the Marlin Spike first, followed by the Bowline. Makes logical sense. Trying to teach the Bowline first results in a few variations that don't work and confuse new learners.

    Coolest way I've ever seen anyone teach how to tie a bowline....hands down.

    Muscle memory is key to remembering knots. But take it from a sail boat owner... tie them when you're in all sorts of weird positions. For some reason, a knot you know by heart will suddenly becoming confusing and hard to tie bent over a railing / hanging over the edge / line coming from above rather than below / non-dominant hand is the only one not holding something / etc. Practice in front of the tv, sure, but then go tie that same knot in as many unusual situations as you can think of.

    Oh my gosh, this is outstanding! I can tell that I'm going to spend hours on this channel. 🙂 And let me just say, it is such a pleasure to find someone on RUclips who knows how to pronounce "bowline". (My father, a former sailor who was then commissioned and became a Naval aviator, taught me a bit about rope and knots, but I've always wanted to learn more.)

    Welp, learned something new today. I first learned how to tie a bowline while going through commercial diver school back in 1994, and I've also seen a few variations of that knot as well. But I've never seen that marlin spike to bowline conversion, nor a mid line knot version. Thanks Dave!

    On that type of rope or any rope really, I used heat shrink for the ends. Kind of makes the ends like shoelace ends.

    It's always good to learn ways to tie familiar knots mid-line as well as at the ends.
    I use the Alpine Butterfly for this type of application, but the Bowline is just as good.
    Cheers.

    Good video, thanks! Question, couldn't you use a double marlin spike with a toogle stick instead of a bowline at the attachment point? It seems like a more efficient/quicker fastener.

    Dave, that's a great use of a double loop bowling knot. Another great place to use one is at the end of a line and leave a little tag end left. With that knit at the end of a line there is never a need for a toggle or a soft shackle. Which really streamlines a ridge line deployment!

    Y'know... Now that I've gotten a chance to mess around with this a little bit. I would like to partially retract my earlier comment.
    It doesn't seem like it will bind up on you if you pull it the wrong way.
    But! The bowline on a bite will!
    Huh!
    I like this style of this knot even more now!

  • @jeremymoses7401

    What applications would you differentiate using this verses using an alpine butterfly? Or is it one of those dealers preference knots?

  • @vicselixir
    @vicselixir 11 месяцев назад

    I think a butterfly knot would be better just more difficult to tie. I understand why you choose that knot based on the Marlin spike.

  • @Aj-po9dc
    @Aj-po9dc 11 месяцев назад

    Neat video!
    I would use a bowline on a bite, myself. Looks like the one you teach here could bind up if you accidentally pull the wrong end....
    Or I'd use a double dragon mid line loop... But that's not a bowline style knot... and under EXTREME load needs some finjangling to undo some times.
    Or I'd use a couple loops held together by a few half hitches... But that one is finicky cuz it falls apart under no tension... But... Under EXTREME load. It'll untie super easy, cuz It's just half hitches holding some loops together.
    But I really enjoyed this video! Cheers! Thanks for making great content!
