BD knows what will win with judges. That being said, I feel like their shows are much more oriented towards them and not the fans, as other corps are more middle ground: Cavaliers, Scouts, Blue Coats, Phantom, and Crown (obviously some years stick out more than others). BD always has an amazing corps all around, so I'm not dissing them, but that's how I feel.
I didn't think I would like this writing; however, since listening for a few, I think it's, almost, right up my alley, considering what lines play, today. I came from the "park and play" era.... In comparison, It seems lines, these days, go a bit out of their way to play way, too" three-dimensional," and beyond....at least, in my humble opinion. In any case, it's clean and sounds great! I think it may be a happy-medium, between what we played and what lines play, today....
The best way to explain it is that it's tradition to not have expression in the drumline. In DCI a lot of traditions are repeated through out the years. Not having facial expression is one of them. You need to concentrate on blending and keeping the phrasing clean so that there are no mistakes and the show is delivered the way it was intended. There is No time for smiling.
You may be halfway right, but the staff really does think about the fans as well. Just in a different way. They want to be more sophisticated. They want the audience to be uncomfortable and have to think about the performance and be intellectually invested in it. This year, much like the original Rite of Spring, they conveyed some ideas that made people say "What?" and thats what they were going for. Its a subconscious enjoyment that they go after,
I hate to say it but your right. I expected better after hearing their brass. Its like the forgot about the line this year. What the line does is done very well, but its just not as high caliber of a line. not enough talent?
Scott SC has some good points . Show some emotion with what you do . Be the music. the Brass has it , but when the drums move it is like your just 'checking in' , not feeling the dance with it to flow .Your not likely to pass BD,SCV, Cavs in score . But you just have to be close enough to 4th/5th and the brass score could carry it .Clean up that snare line ,everyone's "head", have fun , simple as the book may be ,a.3erd can be found ...even a high 5th in perc ...Crown can take it all IMO..
They need to find some long/wide mirror and see themselves .The stick heights are awful .with the snares and you can hear it . The book may be simple and a winner if they can just do it as tight as the brass timing and not expose themselves to NOT having 'the pocket' with what they can do . Also seems they don't yet feel good about themselves yet ....I don't blame them... as much as the brass is intimidating when they are so good as they are . Work it drumline .This is your chance for GOLD .
How come no one hear looks like there having any fun at all ?Im a drummer in a rock band and im always look happy when im playing why cant these guys smile just a question otherwise this is some kick ass shit
Most of my life it has been BD, SCV (alum) or who ever has earned it with a complete show. That is what it is all about . I really can't say I like anyone's show this year other than Crown . The GE and Vis show it too. (IDK what PR was thinking-yuck)...If Crown put's their heads right...1-CC, 2-Cadets,3-BD,4-6?SCV,Scouts,PR ...with 2 weeks or so left , it is up to the staff ,and how hard the lines work , and most of all, WHO wants it the most .Good luck drumline .Brass is historic great ....
I honestly do not like this line. The book just does nothing for me. Having said all that the improvement they showed over the course of the season is considerable. They did not come close to maxing out what is an unremarkable book, but they did enough to bring DCI its first new champion in seventeen years.
Man I hope the drum line can clean it up in the next month or so! To many inconsistencies. I want them to destroy BD this year! Crown has been cheated out of a couple of championships in the past!
This is what drives me nuts about youtube (and the next generation). Drummers and drum lines have ALWAYS drummed on any surface they can find. Fences, tables, wood, water coolers, even cars. But for some reason, nothing exists until its seen on youtube. lol.
The weird thing is that this snare technique is totally my technique lol I just dont really like the writing. Seems a bit one dimensional, but I suppose it works
I think germaneuser was criticizing modern day YT fanboys.
Some of the best writing I have heard from this season.
Holy shit basses.
Dat bass
Einstein's Field Equations look sick on the bass drum heads.
One of the greatest things I have learned from jazz and music is that it is ok to "copy" ideas in this business.
Either I'm trippin' serious balls or there's just an ever-so-slight delay in the sound to the video.

i just realized one of the tenor players was on rhythm x last year and this year damn

I promise that Rennick's lines aren't the first to drum on fences, at all.
Well put its all bout traditions
thats my drum teacher matt
the blonde tenor

Geez. No wonder they got first. Also those drums are pretty cool.
No. Glen Crosby.
I think Cadets are gonna take it. BD doesn't have the book this year.
I conquer Scott SC
In front of the snares in the beginning? That's Glen Crosby.
I like to pretend that Hannum used some complex mathematical formulas to come up with this year's book. It certainly sounds like it.
i think he was still talking about the drumlines.
ahhhhh yeah, crown!
Dayummm
@karmew32 you are completely incorrect.
What do you mean?
I hate to say it but your right. I expected better after hearing their brass. Its like the forgot about the line this year. What the line does is done very well, but its just not as high caliber of a line. not enough talent?
I am almost positive he was making a joke.

no but seriously though he was making a joke and the entire community jumped on it because nobody caught it.

Lol what a dumb comment. I hope you’ve matured since this. “I’m a drummer in a rock band” says it all
I know I’m 6 years late but someone please tell that tenor at 4:20 his drum is tilted...
DAT BASS LINE DOE

freedom high school alumni ryan hall on snare

Basses need to open those splits and keep consistent dynamics down the bassline
Intended idiocy or accident?
Hannum is sick.
anyone know what sticks the snares play with?
michaelisgreen9001 thom hannum

Is the old guy Thom Hannum?
Their break is pretty boring. grid modulations and accents zzz
weren't you only just saying this book was lame?

go figure
They only placed as high as they did because they had the best front ensemble. The battery actually got dirtier as the season went on.
