I'm surprised you don't have any bowl turner customers who'd love to have had those cut-offs you are gonna turn into firewood.
Back in 2015 when you threw water on a walnut slab, I was hooked. Love, love seeing the beautiful wood. Also you make my day with your humor. ❤
Whatever is comfortable works for steering.
Man I could watch that walnut getting the bucket all day.
Gorgeous wood.
As a woodturner, I sure hate to see that walnut go to firewood, Some beautiful bowl blanks in those logs.
How long is he suppose to have t sitting around before someone takes it? He puts logs in his burn pit because no one will take it for free. You'd think a campground or any one would wanting free firewood would jump at it but they never show up
The wood turners are crying 😢
Yes. That was criminal.
He could sawed those short blocks in boards for his own use. Maybe a jewelry box ect.
I actually agree, he could be making some decent money from "hobby wood", but he knows a hell of a lot better than us how to spend his time.
I've ran excavators my whole life and I use my feet for tracking distance and my hands for maneuvers in tight spots
I am a woodturner and when I see that beautiful walnut turned to "firewood breaks my heart!
For the controls whatever works for you. The benefit to the learning/using the foot controls is there are times and certain operations where it may be necessary or helpful to use the joysticks for the boom and rotation inconjuntion with the foot controls for the tracks like maneuvering on a hillside.
It is easier to use the pedals on larger excavators. But when traveling with it I can use either stick or pedals. There are times when you need to use the pedals and your hand controls to get yourself in and out of sticky spots, such as a hill or dip, (odd angles). Hope this helps.
thanks
You killed the Beep Beep. Good on you.
When tracking I prefer to use the pedals most of the time. Handles are great for slow precise movements
Drive it whatever way make you feel comfortable. Most excavator operators will use their feet but they will be using bigger machines.
When you have to operate digging, you have to use your feet so you can use your hands on your controls. It takes time but you can get used to it.
It's yours operate however you please and don't worry about what others think.
Your property is so neat and clean you surprise me when you cut logs leaving sawdust on your clean gravel. You could lift up the logs with the mini excavator and cut those short logs up on the deck of your large trailer, and it would then be easy to brush up the sawdust.
I think I've heard that joke about siding on the chicken house at least a dozen times by now!!🤣🤣
Those short logs still have some nice walnut in them! That would be some good furniture wood or at least some nice wood turning!
When you put your feet on those pedals, in the excavator, you reminded me of Schroeder playing his little toy piano on Charlie Brown 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣.
That is the most beautiful walnut! Im imaging old pianos or beautiful sideboards i grew up with.
That was a master class. Thank you. When you made the first cut on the log in this video, it looked to me like when the saw blade hit the log, the log exploded creating a void in the log, but it was just a different colours of wood . that’s a beautiful log.👍👍
If I was closer to you, I would buy those walnut off-cuts. I could mill some nice lumber for boxes and small furniture veneers from them. Great info you shared today on the pith alignment and sawing techniques. I really enjoyed it.
Lots of crafters/woodworkers that would pay good for those shorts !!
Beautiful video! I will add that as a guitarmaker, I personally PREFER the big full cuts with the pith right in the middle, because on either side of that pith is a wonderful piece that is perfectly quartered, with annular rings at a perfect right angle to the face. Luthiers almost universally insist on that wood due to its minimal shrinkage from side to side when dried. I learned that the hard way when I was first attempting to master the art of guitar building. I have come to love and prefer quartered wood even when working on other woodworking projects, for instance, small funerary boxes for a loved one's ashes. . The only thing I don't do much of is live edge work, which is what many of your customers are likely doing, making live edge table tops. I agree 100% that pith in such a slab can be a heartbreaker for someone unprepared for it. The artsy ones relish those, using butterfly inserts and epoxy, as you pointed out. Great video!
Excellent save on the walnut despite the fence supplies hiding out. Nearly impossible not to be envious of that shiny new equipment. Thank you for sharing with us on RUclips 🤠 watch that back 🙏🇺🇸
hey Brian
I've been running my Bobcat E35 on weekends for about 4 years now. I'd guess 80/20% in favor of steering by feet. It just seems more ""professional", but I do use hands when it seems appropriate. Then again, I was a private pilot, so steering with my feet comes naturally.
I had stopped at my local tractor guy in search of a grapple for my tractor to help with clearing up my wooded fields after a rare tornado went through. He thought for a minute and said, "You need an excavator." I was shocked. I didn't need to dig any trenches! But he tried to explain it to me that it really is a useful machine, so I bought a used rental machine. It had some wear, of course, but it was also well maintained. The tractor guy was so right. I find so many uses for it. And, of course, it's just so much fun to use! It's the closest thing to having a powerful bionic arm and hand that you can experience.
My uncle used to make real good money selling his curly birdseye maple buts to a guy that makes pool cues. It's probably worth looking around before cutting firewood out of them.
That is some beautiful firewood. I could think of all sorts of things to make with it.
Domo origato Mr. Kato!
Your place looks like an equipment rental lot.
That’s the plan. Never have to rent again!
Here in Southeast Nebraska I hobby mill & hire out on some smaller jobs for locals. Recently sold 70 4ft 6" wide 1" thick walnut live edge slabs for 8$ a piece green. I believe that was a fair price. They are going to be used as the center decor boards for a wedding.
A nice rich color and grain to those slabs.
Love that Walnut. I could watch it all day long.
That's the nicest sawbuck I've ever seen anyone use...on RUclips or anywhere.
Use your hands Nathan! Always feels weird using the pedals. Also the small diggers are a lot more jerky so smoothly does it 😊
On a lot of the minis, there's not really enough room to make it easy to foot drive unless you're going "forwards".
There are odd times you may need to use swing, boom and drive at the same time. Practice is required.
Whatever makes you comfortable and safe is good.
Do you ever count the log rings? Just wondering how old the insulator log is and what year the insulator was installed.
Over time you may do both hand controls for the bucket and use your feet to turn or go forward or back at the same time. Doc.
The only time I've ever used the foot petals to move the excavator is if I'm trying to operate/actuate the bucket and arm at the same time as move the excavator..which is a pretty rare occurrence. The rest of the time I just use the handles, like pretty much every other operator I know..
Looks like your loving the mini excavator! Nice handy machine to have 🤠
Man that is very beautiful to look at.....Thanks Nathan....
Old F-4 2 Shoe🇺🇸
Those walnut slabs are nothing short of stunning. Thanks for the video.
You bet
Nathan you can drive Mrs Kato what every way you feel Happy and comfortable With
Beautiful walnut slabs and that’s my favorite.
Now that is some beautiful wood right there!
Boy that walnut is beautiful. What a day on the farm Nathan, Truly blessed!
Hello Nathan, that walnut sure is some beautiful wood. Nice video, thanks. Mike Morgan spoke of you today on his video.
Mike uses hand controls.
Stunning beautiful wood. Thank you sir for sharing life and work with us.
you never do it wrong either way. the foot pedle is so you can drive with your feet while you suse your hand on the boom controls while you move the boom around other trees or moving rocks . i fine both way good deals . i used to do both when loading the machine's on my trail to move from one job to another when i was a heavy machinery mover back in the late 1993 to 2007 before I broke my shoulder from a fall off the machine after filling it with fuel back in Massachusetts doing road building constriction
My answer to how you're driving your mini X is simply yes. I use my hands and my feet, but mostly my feet. I have one word of advice practice digging without digging sounds silly but it's a muscle memory thing. Just keep going through the motions.
Beautiful walnut, Nathan. All the best.
Nice looking wood. Hope it pay for that blade.
it should,
That is a beautiful piece of wood.
Can’t beat that stump removal. And, nice looking slabs. I see a table laying there.
good day nathan. that walnut log cutoff would make a handsome anvil stand. maybe walnut would not make good stand material. just a thought.
Beautiful wood!! Great vids Nathan!!
Hands to you tall.
Awesome job !!
I want to add my voice to those who feel you are leaving money on the table with the walnut cutoffs. They would make great cutting boards by themselves or combined with other woods, or bowl blanks for wood turners. Breaks my heart to see you make firewood. 😢
With a little paint the excavator could be KATOSAURUS REX
Now that is some beautiful wood right there! Good work Nathan!👍❤️
That’s one heck of a versatile saw-buck you got there!
WOW! Nathan! That was a beautiful walnut! ~and we love the water~
Good gosh, I wish I could afford a couple of those slabs. Beautiful wood.
Thanks 👍
So, is that Mr. and Mrs. Kato ?
Nathan, thank you for providing us good ole wholesome entertainment, sprinkled with your humor. Enjoy the vidjas. John here, from the back-roads of Northeastern Tennessee, just down the road apiece.
Always enjoy watching... early release or otherwise. Be well.
Man, that's some beautiful wood.
u2
Nathan,that is some beautiful wood.
As a wood turner, you are killing me turning the beautiful bowl blanks into firewood. Especially that big one. Ugh!!! LOL
Love the walnut
I have been told several times not to use walnut for firewood. I agree with some of the other comments, it could be used by wood turning or for furniture. I’ll add one more use, cut them in 1” boards and wood sign makers would love to get hold of them.
Beautiful !
You could cut those short walnut logs into 8/4 x 8/4 blanks and sell them for game calls.
Those short pieces would make some nice tuning blocks. Worth more than firewood.
Absolutely beautiful lumber.
Thank you very much!
Gorgeous!
It is so enjoyable watching your videos!!
Thanks for sharing.
gorgeous slab.
Absolutely gorgeous hope your back is better today
Yes, that is a nice slab!
Beautiful grain pattern. We had nice weather here in the Dahlonega, GA area today.
I usually only use the foot steering when maneuvering in tight or tricky spots where I have to use the boom as well.
Nice save! beautiful walnut.
Thank you! Cheers!
Watching you rip out those stumps and was thinking that the soil at your property looks pretty nice.
Nathan they look Stunning
Mr and mrs Kato in the Family 😂
By the way the smaller bucket is better for digging out stumps, you dig up less yard and concrete the power you have.
Great video!
Just beautiful walnut!!!
Nice walnut
hey James
@@OutoftheWoods0623 Howdy
Very nice walnut. Instead of turning the end pieces, into firewood, have you thought of cutting them into 6 or 8 quarter rounds? I have seen them selling, for good money. Just a thought. Keep up the good videos.
A beautiful soul right there Nathan.
Wow! Just finished the video and that's about the prettiest of wood I've seen.
Thanks 👍
That is noe beautiful log!!
I used to work At a strip mine We mined Coal .Running the excavator I've used the ' control pedals and the sticks ,It's usually whatever you're comfortable with .
I use my feet going forward and my arms to track backwards. Mostly because I have trouble reaching the sticks when they are fully forward. Learning to use the pedals will help to walk the machine using the bucket and tracks at the same time. You can practice crossing the creek at the new place.
Enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Love what you do and how you do it. You clearly love what you do and how you do it ! Thankyou from a wet England 🏴
Thanks 👍
Nathan, lots of comments from wood turners. You could sell green bowl blanks, easy. Just throw 'em in a pile and cover with a tarp. Lots of guys turn GREEN wood for bowls. Nice work, OTHERWISE.
don't have time to fool with it, there is a reason sawmill are not selling cut offs to bowl turners, not enough $ to justify the time to sell and market them,
@@OutoftheWoods0623 , Understood. Our family has mills here in redwood country, Mendocino, CA. We work with beautiful old growth and develop typical slash and cutoffs. I’m the grandfather of the crew so I got time to mess with it. The kids don’t have time for it. Our virgin old growth goes for $12-20 B/F. Can you imagine?!
That's some nice looking wood. Golly.
Maybe some plank cutting boards out of those short pieces.
