I think it's important to mention that not all non-profits in the world have millions of dollars in grants and operating budgets. There are countless community-based non-profits that solve actual problems and never get any attention from donors and other funders. A large majority of funds often go to international organizations that are well connected while most small and truly-local organizations that work on the frontlines of global problems often have to operate with next to nothing.
I believe the vast majority of nonprofits are legitimate and operating on shoestring budgets. That said, I also believe that there are a few nonprofits that pull in enormous sums of money and use their status as nonprofits to evade taxes and egregiously take advantage of unsuspecting individuals.
After working at an NFP for several years, I can confirm this kind of behaviour is not limited to those in the US. I have yet to see one that isn’t using their status as a means for moving cash and assets to the “stakeholders” advantage.
I stopped donating years ago when I found out about this. Its absolutely ridiculous that a non profit organization can do this. There should be stricter laws to prevent these from existing. But I’m sure they have grown far to powerful for that to ever happen
Regulations do not mandate good behavior. It's integrity, honesty, and the accountability of the individual. We have so many regulations and laws yet look at the crimes in our cities. It is the individual that is accountable and most importantly, they need to be regularly monitored and followed up by auditors. There are many regulations on the books yet remember many are written by several that are benefitting from these nonprofits, either directly or indirectly. And, unfortunately, we have to realize this.. Many are crooks.
This is probably why we saw a great influx of so many out of country students getting scholarships on our public university soccer teams and being taken away from American soccer players. Most players here in our southeast state were not American citizens. It even grew to baseball and softball teams. American kids pushed aside and had to pay for school while out of country (never tax paying citizens) got a free ride. Its a disgrace!..
The authorities aren't keeping very good track. I know someone who used his non-profit to buy a huge piece of land, buit a house, put up a roap course and calls it a youth retreat. Ps thanks for putting this out there! Most people have no idea.

I work for non profit and I can vouch this is true. All the micro mamagement and micro aggressions........grrrr It makes me doubt what kind of change in community are they talking about!
What folks do not realize is that many service provider businesses used to be small tax paying businesses. The influx of nonprofit transitions, transitioned many tax paying small businesses to tax exempt nonprofit service providers (providing same service....lets say transportation services for example) and became govt service providers resourced by another nonprofit or an agency and actually being paid more and do not have to pay taxes and can also pay themselves a great salary. All this influx of nonprofits have actually closed small businesses and lessened the tax base. Sounds scary huh? Many 100% totally directly or indirectly govt funded dependent nonprofits. ... When many nonprofits and even the private corporate world survive by govt grant (our tax dollars).... It is scary how many entities are supported by the govt (our tax dollars)....
I remember one of the biggest typhoons hit the Philippines years ago and devastated a whole region. So much Red Cross and other charities were gearing up all over social media in Europe and the west, all my friends and family were donating money and cash, sharing anything they could, felt like the whole world was donating, it was impressive. Meanwhile my friend who was actually there In the worse area never saw ANY aid, the whole time. Weeks, months later, nothing. However we did see lot of charity items for sell on places like eBay. Sadly the first level of corruption happens at the charity, then any charity that actually does make it then gets stolen by the subcontracting charities. Also while this was happening I was living opposite a big Red Cross headquarters and warehouse, they’re car park is filled with at least 100 different types of brand new suvs, trucks, pick up trucks. Guess what happened to all of them after the typhoon? Nothing. They all stayed there. No relief missions, nothing.
Part of the problem is that nonprofits playing by the legal rules and regulations can only use 10% of donations for administrative costs. That's rent, electric, computers, internet access, paychecks for employees, flyers, and advertising. All the other money is supposed to go to the programs provided. They can't grow big enough to deal with these more sizeable societal problems to make a dent. No nonprofit can work off volunteers alone and some people working for nonprofits are making so little, they can't afford shelter, food, and basics to survive. This is where we are. I am volunteering my time to get a nonprofit off the ground. I can't get paid. The kids we support would suffer. But how do I pay for gas for my car? The system is broken. Big charities are getting government grants, but there are so many hoops to jump through and the rules are tricky. I love what I do, but if I quit who is going to take up the slack? Especially when you're not getting paid to do so.

The organiser told me I could keep 80% of whatever I collect. 11-year-old me didn't see the problem with this and I was very disappointed when it was cancelled due to heavy rain.
I'm surprised they didn't take it all and took their own 80% cut that's usually how things work. I sold 100s of bucks worth of candy as a kid and got the cheapest prizes in return. I'm pretty sure that was a scam
This is why it is always better to support local shelters, churchs and community groups along with local small businesses and you can directly see the results rather than it being some far off hope and prayer that the money wasn't funneled into rich man's pocket

I’m in the process of creating a nonprofit organization. In the US, it takes over $5000 to fully register, and it is many times easier to create a church. There is no good reason for the distinction.
Nonprofits do not have to be charities or for social causes. A rich girl once got her parents to make a nonprofit that was essentially a party planning venture. She was "Chief Creative Officer". It later became a for-profit firm. Screw the birthday parties for poor kids.

The Tony Elumelu Foundation, They give a $5000 to at least 1000 African entrepreneur every year... Most probably one of the best, if not the best non-profit in Africa from my perspective...

In Ukraine charities are now used to facilitate border crossings for people barred therefrom (18-60 y.o. males - war, martial law) giving them an alibi of a foreign mission. That costs thousands of dollars: recently guys in my area were arrested for a $16k bribe (UAH 600k!) to a veterans' (?) charity to confirm a guy's disability.
I personally do not donate. Imagine creating an organization that provides free walking sticks to people who have lost toes to diabetes. The CEO pays himself a salary for managing the organization and skims some more money in alleged extra hours his employees work. Maybe even buy a car and justify and tax-write off the expense as a company car needed for work. Add extras to the stick like a rubber tip and a flashlight on the handle, etc each added expense is an opportunity to skim more from the donation and of course outsource the labor of the stick and its components to his cousin for some monetary kick backs. And claim this company as nonprofit tax free income. Every donation incurs a transaction fee.
Many small businesses that provided services transitioned to govt service provider nonprofits that provide those same services like services for the mentally ill or education or even transportation services (many services) .... Nonprofits can put private individuals out of business because of the established referral system that refers to "certain" chosen private individuals like doctors etc. .... That way it omits responsibility of a quote or proposal system that's required to provide direct services .... If funneled thru a nonprofit it eliminates the accountability from the agency? Is that correct?
As somebody who wanted to start a non profit it shouldn't be about the fancy houses and nice cars it should be about helping others, changing the world, not having a ton of money in the bank. Hell, if I started a non profit I'd prefer to take a very small salary.
Slidebean, People need more of the type of exposure and information you have shared. To me just thinking of the term nonprofit is totally misleading because to me that term makes me think that these people aren't making a profit at all. Also one thing many nonprofits want you to believe is that "No salaries are paid to any of our loyal volunteers." which in most all cases is true. Why? because they are simply that, just volunteers. However the staff in most cases do get paid because they are part of the nonprofit organization. Yet none of these nonprofit organizations that I have read about add only staff members are paid. I don’t trust donating to hardly anything, because of this very thing. I know some people that are a part of running some of the emergency response contributions of the lds church and they do a great job and are trustworthy imo, not screwing around with peoples money.

There is no such thing as Non-profit without making profits. Bills to be paid, food needs to be on the table. Simple as that. I lost trust in humanity.
It is insulting and audacious for anyone to be begging for money for religion or for animals or any other spurious purpose which can not open its books and conclusively prove that the vast majority of their money is going for explicitly helping the American people!. Every day people in this country lose their jobs, their housing their lives and a host of other things.. Try telling your landlord that you cannot pay because you donated to the ASPCA. Also large ceo salaries for charities (I'm talking about 6 figures or in the case of Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York it's more like 7 figures; over 2 miillion dollars per year. Unless the head of this organization can cure cancer by himself neither he nor any other ceo deserves that kind of money nor can they justify it no matter what kind of BS they shovel with their mouths about how all ceo's say that is the trend nowadays and it's the only way to get top notched talent. They have no idea nor do they care how it looks to be the head of a "charity" and earn the kind of money that ordinary working people with all their problems will never see in their lifetimes. Think about this for a moment. One of the greatest sacrifices ever made for the benefit of mankind was the Normandy invasion on June 6 1944 which opened a 2nd front in the war in Europe. That's an accomplishment yet nobody was paid 6 figures for the planning, the leadership, and the sacrifice that it took to pull it off. If wealthy people want to throw their money everytime at pitchmen or at sobby animal emotional stories then let them. But if ordinary people didn't donate money the "charity" knows it can't survive. Real charity begins at home or in the community; not on the 29th floor of Trump Tower.

We use proxies like 'overhead' to try and determine this, but they're not the same thing (and often diverge substantially). Here's what I mean: You have $100 to donate to a charity that cures a certain disease and you're trying to decide between two charities: Charity A: 40% Overhead 60% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects) Charity B: 10% Overhead 90% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects) Based on this alone, one would say that charity B is superior to charity A. But what if Charity A's intervention/programs were more effective at converting donations into positive impact? For the sake of this hypothetical example, let's assume a 5x difference. Charity A: 40% Overhead 60% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects) $1 Cures 5 people with (insert disease here) Impact: ($60*5=300 people cured) Charity B: 10% Overhead 90% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects) $1 Cures 1 person with (insert disease here) Impact: ($90*1=90 people cured) This example should hopefully illustrate that what ACTUALLY matters is the effectiveness/impact of an organization or intervention, not proxies like overhead/marketing spend/CEO salary/etc. GiveWell is a charity evaluator that focuses predominantly on Impact and largely shifted my views on this.

I only donate locally. My Humane Society pays no one. Yes there are many costs to keep the shelter going: food bills, building upkeep and utilities bills, huge vet bills etc. but it is ALL for the animals. Give an item your specific Scout troop NEEDS and it belongs to that troop. If you buy a box of cookies or popcorn the local troop gets pennies on the dollar. Troops don"t HAVE to sell stuff. There are endless wants an needs (and greedy self-proclaimed religious who steal airplanes) so do your research. We want to help the NEEDY not the GREEDY!

FIFA has never claimed to be non-profit. It is technically a “sportverein”/sports club.. This is also for the purpose of taxes etc. However this means they still pay taxes and have never posed as being a non-profit.

They are honest until they get flashy. My rule of thumb is to not give away my money. If I want to contribute to a cause, there are other means.
I only donate locally, usually to reputable church's who have already helped the local community in the past, specifically to avoid potential misuse of funds and donations

I remember how gates foundationtion was against vaccine research and manufatcture in India. Despite being one of the top country with Pharma infrastructure and export. He said something like it was too risky to leave vaccine technology to countries other than US and EU.
That was about mRNA tech, which was developed in the year of pandemic.
Infact gates foundation funded 250 million USD to serum institute of India to enable them start production for COVAX initiative.

In india we have emergency use authorization for both Pfizer and moderna, yet they're hardly being used.

I’m in the process of creating a nonprofit organization. In the US, it takes over $5000 to fully register, and it is many times easier to create a church. There is no good reason for the distinction.
Why that much?
If you want to help, help direct to your friends. Family, neighbors. Why give away money to the powerful non profits.

Nonprofits do not have to be charities or for social causes. A rich girl once got her parents to make a nonprofit that was essentially a party planning venture. She was "Chief Creative Officer". It later became a for-profit firm. Screw the birthday parties for poor kids.

Slidebean, I give to Covenant House helping young people. I feel passionate about the younger generation, I suppose it was when I was 17 years of age an organization reach out help me when I really needed it. So I look for one non profit that help out young people. Thank you for great video.
In Ukraine charities are now used to facilitate border crossings for people barred therefrom (18-60 y.o. males - war, martial law) giving them an alibi of a foreign mission. That costs thousands of dollars: recently guys in my area were arrested for a $16k bribe (UAH 600k!) to a veterans' (?) charity to confirm a guy's disability.
I personally do not donate. Imagine creating an organization that provides free walking sticks to people who have lost toes to diabetes. The CEO pays himself a salary for managing the organization and skims some more money in alleged extra hours his employees work. Maybe even buy a car and justify and tax-write off the expense as a company car needed for work. Add extras to the stick like a rubber tip and a flashlight on the handle, etc each added expense is an opportunity to skim more from the donation and of course outsource the labor of the stick and its components to his cousin for some monetary kick backs. And claim this company as nonprofit tax free income. Every donation incurs a transaction fee.

Many small businesses that provided services transitioned to govt service provider nonprofits that provide those same services like services for the mentally ill or education or even transportation services (many services) .... Nonprofits can put private individuals out of business because of the established referral system that refers to "certain" chosen private individuals like doctors etc. .... That way it omits responsibility of a quote or proposal system that's required to provide direct services .... If funneled thru a nonprofit it eliminates the accountability from the agency? Is that correct?

As somebody who wanted to start a non profit it shouldn't be about the fancy houses and nice cars it should be about helping others, changing the world, not having a ton of money in the bank. Hell, if I started a non profit I'd prefer to take a very small salary.
Slidebean, People need more of the type of exposure and information you have shared. To me just thinking of the term nonprofit is totally misleading because to me that term makes me think that these people aren't making a profit at all.
Also one thing many nonprofits want you to believe is that "No salaries are paid to any of our loyal volunteers." which in most all cases is true. Why? because they are simply that, just volunteers. However the staff in most cases do get paid because they are part of the nonprofit organization. Yet none of these nonprofit organizations that I have read about add only staff members are paid. I saw another video of yours but the echo was so much that I couldn't understand it very well. Keepem Coming!

I don’t trust donating to hardly anything, because of this very thing. I know some people that are a part of running some of the emergency response contributions of the lds church and they do a great job and are trustworthy imo, not screwing around with peoples money.
Many businesses use Private Jets as its more viable than using commercial scheduled airlines, which factor in extra hotels, delays, inflexibility.

And yea, when you pointed out that pastor... man, that's really a painful topic, and the worst part of it is this: I don't even care for this particular pastor because he is basically evil on display and I'm pretty sure he is not promoting the true Gospel of Jesus Christ; but what gets me the most is when I hear that quote, "If Jesus was physically on the Earth today, he wouldn't be riding a donkey..." or something in the like manner sometimes used by pastors and officials of the Church who I respect and who are promoting the true Gospel. @@chrisramsey6725 the reality is a mix of something in between. Smaller government, with a focus on utilities / defense / health / education / anti-monopoly. Completely free market/libertarianism just leads to the same problems as big government but with big corporations, and benefits those who a) can, and b) will, be the most aggressive & deceptive. The two sides (government & private business) need to balance eachother out & counteract the abusive elements of eachother.

There is no such thing as Non-profit without making profits. Bills to be paid, food needs to be on the table. Simple as that. I lost trust in humanity.
It is insulting and audacious for anyone to be begging for money for religion or for animals or any other spurious purpose which can not open its books and conclusively prove that the vast majority of their money is going for explicitly helping the American people!. Every day people in this country lose their jobs, their housing their lives and a host of other things.. Try telling your landlord that you cannot pay because you donated to the ASPCA. I' m sure he'll be impressed when you're out on the street. Also large ceo salaries for charities (I'm talking about 6 figures or in the case of Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York it's more like 7 figures; over 2 miillion dollars per year. Unless the head of this organization can cure cancer by himself neither he nor any other ceo deserves that kind of money nor can they justify it no matter what kind of BS they shovel with their mouths about how all ceo's say that is the trend nowadays and it's the only way to get top notched talent. What crap! They have no idea nor do they care how it looks to be the head of a "charity" and earn the kind of money that ordinary working people with all their problems will never see in their lifetimes. Think about this for a moment. One of the greatest sacrifices ever made for the benefit of mankind was the Normandy invasion on June 6 1944 which opened a 2nd front in the war in Europe. That's an accomplishment yet nobody was paid 6 figures for the planning, the leadership, and the sacrifice that it took to pull it off. If wealthy people want to throw their money everytime at pitchmen or at sobby animal emotional stories then let them. But if ordinary people didn't donate money the "charity" knows it can't survive. Real charity begins at home or in the community; not on the 29th floor of Trump Tower.

There's something really large and arguably most important being lost here: IMPACT (how much good the charity actually does). We use proxies like 'overhead' to try and determine this, but they're not the same thing (and often diverge substantially). Here's what I mean:
You have $100 to donate to a charity that cures a certain disease and you're trying to decide between two charities:
Charity A:
40% Overhead
60% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects)
Charity B:
10% Overhead
90% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects)
Based on this alone, one would say that charity B is superior to charity A. But what if Charity A's intervention/programs were more effective at converting donations into positive impact? For the sake of this hypothetical example, let's assume a 5x difference.
Charity A:
40% Overhead
60% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects)
$1 Cures 5 people with (insert disease here)
Impact: ($60*5=300 people cured)
Charity B:
10% Overhead
90% Intervention Spend (what actually goes to projects)
$1 Cures 1 person with (insert disease here)
Impact: ($90*1=90 people cured)
This example should hopefully illustrate that what ACTUALLY matters is the effectiveness/impact of an organization or intervention, not proxies like overhead/marketing spend/CEO salary/etc. GiveWell is a charity evaluator that focuses predominantly on Impact and largely shifted my views on this.

I only donate locally. My Humane Society pays no one. Yes there are many costs to keep the shelter going: food bills, building upkeep and utilities bills, huge vet bills etc. but it is ALL for the animals. Give an item your specific Scout troop NEEDS and it belongs to that troop. If you buy a box of cookies or popcorn the local troop gets pennies on the dollar. Troops don"t HAVE to sell stuff. There are endless wants an needs (and greedy self-proclaimed religious who steal airplanes) so do your research. We want to help the NEEDY not the GREEDY!
