Shaq has been calling out Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert again. This time he went on his podcast and explained that the young Jazz players “aren’t good” and ranted about how he could dominate Gobert one-on-one. This is a look at the actual reason Shaq keeps calling out current NBA stars.

I get Shaq, and it's easy to understand him when you see the players he does respect and how much he reveres someone like Giannis. If anything he got that lesson from Kobe who basically chased him out of LA for getting fat and not giving his all on the court when he was still the best and most dominant center in the game.
The truth is that Shaq also came from a time when great players wanted to be dominant, to the point that people were SCARED to criticize them: both players and the media. MJ would take some small comment that a local journalist made and use that as his rationale to drop 50 on a team visiting. Shaq routinely took it personal when someone said that another big man was on his level or could guard him, and would go out of his way to embarrass him. A lot of modern players today don't see criticism as a form of motivation, they see criticism as a form of hate and thus they dismiss it, because what can you really ever learn from hate anyways?
This is why they end up being good, but not great. The first player Shaq really used to go hard after was Dwight Howard. He constantly said that Dwight given all his gifts, should average 28 and 15 in his prime. Dwight constantly dismissed that criticism, even though it was similar to the kind of criticism he got from Kobe when they played together in 2013. It wasn't until the 2019-2020 season when he had developed a reputation for being a locker room killer and no team wanted to take a chance on him before the Lakers took a risk on him, that he finally owned up to the fact that people like Shaq and Kobe had been correct about him the whole time.
Every year an NBA athlete is healthy and in his prime is a blessing and he should take advantage of it as much as possible (imagine what Penny Hardaway would've been had it not been for injuries?). Think about all the great players whose careers were demolished by injuries: D. Rose, Brandon Roy, Grant Hill, hell Greg Oden didn't even get the chance to have a career due to injury. So I get it when Shaq sees someone like Donovan Mitchell, sees that he hasn't gotten much better as a player since his sophomore year and feels the need to tell him that he's not that good. He's telling him he's too comfortable with his achievements and that's preventing him from reaching his max potential. It sounds like hate now, but let him reach late into his career, and those injuries and time take their toll, and he knows he's on the decline...he's going to remember what Shaq said and that he was ultimately right, just like Dwight eventually did too.

The problem with Shaq is that he was physically unstoppable from the get go due to physical gifts. Kobe worked his ass off to get where he was through mentality. There was nothing physically special about Kobe. He was no different physically from other shooting guards. It was his mentality and intelligence that made him great. Shaq was great because he was pretty much 99% of the time physically bigger and stronger than everybody else on court that they just bounce off him. That's why he has difficulty relating to other players. His experience is just go in and do it and he does it. Other players like Donovan mitchell may encounter players who is faster or stronger than him and he has to learn how to deal with that. And Shaq doesn't know what to tell someone what to do if faced with someone stronger than him because he was always the stronger guy. Chuck calls him out on this too sometimes when he criticizes teams.

Plus Kobe at 6'6 with a wingspan of a 6"11 is physical gifted, he had a tremndous potential definsively going in to the league. The only example of this kind of working (which I don’t remember it being nearly as harsh) is when Shaq called out Embiid saying he can be so much more or someone his size should be dominating right now, and Embiid actually seemed to take that to heart and I believe is the most dominant player in the NBA and, no matter what the numbers say, should’ve won MVP this year for multiple reasons.
But every other one of these takes are him legitimately criticizing a player without giving any advice. I loved Shaq as a player and I think he’s funny in his commercials. But as an NBA analyst he’s about as bad as they come, and it really does seem like his insecurities that he’s projecting onto others.

Shaq doesn't know basketball. Period. Analysis? I have never heard any from him. Whatever comes out of his mouth is just some typical stuff like even a 10-year-old can say. His comments about Gobert lacking offense is true and right, but he's not the first one who said it - IMO, he's copied other people's analysis. I used to watch TNT talks because Kenny Smith has good points from time to time, even Charles Barkley is hard to follow. But even since they brought in Shaq, I stopped watching TNT all together.

This is the clear gap in generations and how much the landscape of social interactions have changed since Shaq was in his prime. It's overlooked by so many people but remember Shaq was drafted before most of current league were born. 1 thing Shaq loves the attention and he knows that saying things like whT he said to Donovan Mitchell would draw attention and her him invited on to podcasts and keep him in the conversation just like in this very video. Sometimes being the villain pays better than being Mr.Nice guy and this is a perfect example of that.

4:00 People who are too young to remember or know do not realize how truly dominant Shaq was. He was 100% right about Gobert defending Shaq in his playing days. Shaq would have mauled him to pieces in the low block. Gobert's closest comparison to someone 20 years ago might be Dikembe Mutombo, and Mutombo had a really hard time defending Shaq. Gobert struggles against Embiid and Jokic who aren't nearly as quick, big or explosive as Shaq was in his prime.

I don't think he really uses it in aid of his insecurity. It's more like old school ball where the NBA vets when they played were harsh to them, it motivated them and became great. Charles Barkley even tells a story about how he was called fat and lazy (which sounds like a bully like Shaq) but he actually thanks him because it motivated him to get in shape and become a legend. I just think Shaq feels like Mitchell is just stagnant and not trying to improve. Which is why he's like ur good but not great. It's a motivational tactic to get Mitchell to improve his game. Shaq dosnt go around shit talking every single player he sees he only does it to players he feels like can be great but isn't. It's like a "I was lazy and didn't fullfil my potential so I don't want talented players to do the same"

I think that's one of the reasons why you don't hear the younger generation looking up to Shaq's play on the court and instead look to Kareem and Hakeem and understandably so. We all know at this point that he ain't no good in debates

You got to remember too when Oakley or Shaq call superstars soft or say Giannis would come off the bench. They come from an era in basketball where if u drove consistently to the basket with force you would be met with even more extreme force and possible body slammed to the ground. I love Giannis but as a younger player in the league back then running into a Shaq/Oakley/Wallace and getting slammed a couple times to the ground you think twice about running back in there when you know these guys are willing to give you a concussion on a drive. He might not have developed his game into what we see today. Forcing him to focusing more on jump shooting, where would he be if he took that direction?
That's why its too hard to compare players from different ERAS. ie LBJ could have 20k career pts in layups/forceful drives to the bucket in modern day basketball, in the previous era the big men weren't putting up with it and that total could be pushed down to 18k or lead to more injuries constantly getting body checked at the rim. Almost all of those "regular fouls" under the rim would have been called flagrant in todays game.
