I love how professional these two are! Yes, they're enemies, but that's only on the clock. After hours, they're good friends. They'll have breakfast together, even cover each other's shift at work, when the other isn't well. I respect that they don't let their job affect their friendship! Always loved how it was never personal, it was just business. All in a days work.
A coworker and I used to arrive at a time clock at the same time. We'd always greet each other with "Mornin' Ralph/Mornin' Sam"👍
I love the running gag that the two of them are like best friends, despite their respective jobs being in opposition to each other. 🤣
And of course never questions the purpose of the job. If one of them quits, it either peaceful or all the sheep are dead.
It’s hard to comprehend the level of genius of cartoon.

Come on, it's Christmas. Let Ralph have at least one sheep for Christmas dinner. He has a family to feed.
Ralph only steal sheep for his job. He's not really interested in eating them and keeps lunch box with him.

Ralph showed up in the mid 50ies and Wile E.s first short is from 1949. But who knows, maybe Ralph was on the drawing board earlier. 🤔🤔🤔
