You have a spark jumping on the left side. When I was 10, my Dad showed me how to start his "D" on the first turn. We sed a "J" shaped small tube , with the long end in a bottle of gasoline we turned the engine back and fresh gasoline was sucked into the cylinder. When the flywheel was turned past the magneto the spark fired the fuel. Easy.

Why did JD stick with this old style technology, hand starting, or pony motors, and 2 cylinders when Oliver, and others, were using inline 4's and 6's decades before them ?

Simple answer is... it just worked. Big cylinders get big power. By late 1930s John Deere D drawbar hp is 35 to 38. Oliver 70 with 6 cylinder drawbar hp was 28hp. Less complicated answer is farmers aren't fond of change. If it works and you know how it works then keep it up as long as sales stay up.
