I had a severe brachial plexus injury, avulsion of at least 1 nerve, when I was in my 20's. My arm was mostly paralyzed for the better part of a year. all of the flexors, the deltoid, part of the trapezius, rotator cuff were all useless on one side. The pain from the nerves healing was intense at times, like a hot knife plunged into my shoulder. It took a couple of years to recover without surgery, and 25 years later most of the affected mucles are between 70 and 90 percent of what they used to be in terms of strength. I lift weights regularly, and my right arm will get tired well before the left. I performed the exercises in this video and they caused some burning, but not too bad. When suffered in adulthood, these injuries can take a long time to heal. If you are injured, see a doctor right away, then do the PT and keep the joints moving.

Great video. My main question is how soon after an injury should one begin these exercises? I have the compressed c5-c6 type of stinger from wrestling. It is now day 3 of just icing every few hours and taking ibuprofen and my thumb and index finger are still 50% numb. I tried a couple push-ups and have definitely lost strength in my pectoral muscle and down through my arm. I am guessing I can't fully activate those muscles because the discs are pinched or maybe the nerves are swollen, or maybe both.
You can start these gentle stretches, but something like a push up might irritate it even more, so I wouldn't recommend those until you can all our feeling back. Good luck.
DE I have a question for you. It’s been 4 years sense you’re injury. How are you feeling now? Are you healed? Is your arm stronger sense the injury and did you get your feelings back in your fingers? @@jessicamehanathan3247 unfortunately not, just a lot of pain between my spine and shoulder that is also causing arm pain and pins and needles and loss of function in my right hand
I've had mine since birth, had no use of my right arm whatsoever until the doctors took nerves out of my calves to repair the damage that they had caused. This gave me about 83% of it's functionality. I was supposed to have another surgery around the time I entered my teens, but my father screwed me out of that. Now at 23 years old, I want my arm to be as close to fully functional as I can. It has shriveled and gotten smaller and weaker than my left and I can't build up it's strength properly without the mobility. Here's hoping that these help, even thought I can't physically rotate my hand to do that forehead one
Wow! I’m 64 and have Erbs palsy or brachial plexus palsy all my life and nothing was ever done about it. Never had therapy. It has prevented me from being athletic in many ways. But I guess it’s too late now, pretty much. I’m mostly interested in yoga because I’m feeling very locked, stiff, and cramped in my left shoulder blade. Any ideas?
hii mam..my case is about 7 years old..i remember that i played cricket after long time and was doing fast bowling through which it came. as i was playing after months so little muscles strech was there i thought initially..it remained for 2 or 3 days and all of it gone disappeared except that back shoulder pain on left side, pain on left side of head and neck. i have gone through nurology, examined migrane and all. got nothing as positive..my case is not extreme. but i can tell my cases which are 1) running is best exercise and i love it. when i do running this pain gets enhanced so usually i dont run now. 2) when pain is more then inhaling extreme from left side of nose takes much effort, and i feel some pain in chest on left side 3) there is continuous some heaviness in left side of head and back neck, get increased if i do any weighing type of work 4) when i move my left hand in circular motion, then i gets muscles voice, seems like shoulder got some stiffness whatever i have seen about this enjury it seems like brachial plexus..can you lease assist me more mam..it will be very kind of you mam thank you
Hey there!! I had first rib removed and they went axillary. 6 months later it stills feel like there's nerve entrapment. What are some good ways to release this.
My doctor diagnosed me with brachial plexopathy but I have had no trauma or apparent physical cause for this. Is this synonymous with Parson-Turner syndrome? I just had immense pain that resolves with dry needling but residual weakness on the right shoulder remains. Getting old stinks.
@@AskDoctorJo Levator, lats, pecs, forearm and very lightly on sides of my neck. It definitely relieved some pain. MRI indicated degenerative disc disease but 2 neurologists and a spine surgeon have seen it and don't believe that to be the cause.
Yeah, if it's relieved with dry needling, it's more likely the muscles causing the compression than the DDD. Hopefully with a combo of needling and strengthening, you will get some strength back.
@@AskDoctorJo Thank you, I was leaning that way but the DDD was making me leery of other issues. I'll let my doctor know if anything changes for the worse.

Hi Dr Joe these exercises are real blessing to me I was afraid there was nothing that was going to work but they are working how many and how often can I do these exercises
It's different for everyone depending on what your diagnosis is, how long you've had it, and how your body reacts. The information in this video may help: ruclips.net/video/Uo2Bz7F339I/видео.html As far as how often, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
My daughter was born with this also and shes in physical therapy she's 4 about to be 5 in a few days I'm worried about her having pain as she gets older do you guys experience pain from it?
I sustained a (R) brachial plexus injury to C6, C7 & T1 in 1994 and have learned to live with my disabilities. Would these exercises have any effect on Phantom Pain? That seems to be the most debilitating thing I am encountering these days.
Unfortunately, I don't know that answer since I can't evaluate you. Everyone is different. If there is any way you can see a physical therapist in person, they should be able to help you figure out a specific program for you and help answer your questions.

He woke up and know I can't move my arm I CAN feel and move my hands / fingers, and I can move my shoulder just not in between its like a tiny little bit of numbness and tingling what do you think would be the best thing to

Hi Doctor jo. I am 18 year old girl and i think in the recent 6 months i have stretched my neck a lot during excercises . I feel a shock in my arm whenever i stretch it at one angle . its painful . I don't know what to do so i searched about this online and got to know that it is a brachial plexus injury and am very scared thinking - will it ever be cured or not . Please help me with this . I did not inform my parents about this yet .
I have a brachial plexus injury, and I have no idea how I got it. The pain started six months ago, and I only noticed it when I would extend my arm while getting dressed. I ignored it, figuring that it would just go away. Now it is suddenly much worse. Last night, I bent slightly to pet my dog, and had severe pain in my arm. Today, there is also pain in my neck and shoulder. Other than exercise, is there anything that can help this problem? How long would it take to see improvement with these exercises? Thanks!
Those injuries are usually something you would know that you did. It could be coming from your neck, like a disc herniation or pinched nerve. I would really recommend going to the doctor for some tests. These won't really help if it's not a brachial plexus injury. Good luck.
What can I do? I have break Plex of nerve damage after surgery. My arm does not move for loving years. What can I do? I’m so tired of feeling like this.
HI Dr.Jo!! I love the variety of stretched and exercises you have. I have Erbs Palsy. It was an injury at birth and I received corrective surgery when I was 10 so I would be able to use/move my arm in the front part of my body. I had some physical therapy as a child but I was wondering if these exercises will still be effective if I've had this injury since birth. My right arm is my dominant arm. I am a cartoonist and worry that if I don't strengthen my left I will exhaust my right/drawing hand. Or should I check with a doctor?
Thanks! I would check with your doctor. They might help, but if you've had it since birth, having some physical therapy in person to help guide you would be the best option.
It depends on what stage of recovery you are in and how your body reacts to treatment, but in general, therapeutic exercises can be done 1-3 times a day, every day.
Hi. I’m subscribed. I’m diagnosed with brachial plexus adhesion. I’m trying to avoid release surgery. Are those the exercises for this? What’s the average exercise period to judge? Appreciate your help. Really desperate.
Thanks for subscribing. They might help, but they are not specifically for that. It really just depends on how severe your case is. Some people might see some results in a few days, but others it might take several weeks. If there is any way you can go see a physical therapist in person, that would really be the best option.
Thanks Dr Jo. If we have a brachial plexus injury, should we be doing the different nerve glides as well, or is this too much stimulation for the area? Can we do short runs with a brachial plexus injury?
My right arm strength is lowered 4 days later. When can I expect my full strength back? My injury didn’t even hurt that much at all. I was a 1 on a scale of 1-10. I’m just scared from the strength loss. I feel it strained for sure but not pain.
@@macvagenc4742 Sorry to hear man. What's youre percentage right now would you say? What was it at best before the flare up? how did it happen? Clean diet as well. I believe you will get back to 100 percent if you do those things. I also kept weight training at like 30-50% for a bit. See a PT if you haven't already. On top of all that, I can't really go to the gym to work it out so I'm very skinny as well.

+RUclips Kine Basically taping, like athletic taping is to stabilize joints (prevent movement), but the tape does give slightly for some movement. Strapping is usually done with Leukotape, which is a very rigid tape, and you put a layer of Hypafix tape underneath because the Leukotape is very irritating on the skin. This is used for very strong stability where you don't want something to move, or you want to keep something in place, like patella tracking. Finally Kineso taping can be used for all the above depending on how much tension you put on the tape. It is very flexible and moves with the body/muscle, but you can stretch it to the end to use for stability. It also works really well to improve circulation to an area or get fluid out of an area. I will look into making a video for this. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I had an accident in 2004 and had brachial plexus in my tight hand. The sensation occurs upto elbow only and getting severe pain neck to fingers. Can you suggest me how can I relief from pain or can it curable.😥😥😥😥
Thanks! It really depends on what specific part of the brachial plexus is injured. If you have specific muscles not activating, placing the pads on those specific muscles might help with activation.

I'm 36 years old and I have brachial plexus on my right arm I can't fully extend my arm I have noticed some pain I want to know what's causing it and what can I do to lessen the pain and gain strength?. I have never received any therapy.
It's usually caused by an over stretch injury. Do you remember an injury when it first started? Unfortunately, since I can't evaluate you, I really don't know.
If you can go to physical therapy for it, that would really be the best. Since I can't evaluate you, the only thing I can recommend is the above video.

i had an accident 8 years ago, and i didnt go for surery. i had no movements at all before and after 8 years now my shoulder movements are almost back and i have some elbow movements. can u please help me? i wanna know if there is any options left for me.
Did you go to any formal physical therapy? That would be the the best option. Since I can't evaluate you, I really don't know, but if you go for an evaluation, a physical therapist might be able to help you figure out what would be best. Good luck.
Through out these 8 years you never had any stiffness? Wow even after a long time is it recovering. I had an accident 2 and half year ago april 15' . For my first 3 to 4 months there wasnt much improvement and week. 5 to 6 months my elbow started to lift slowly. But then i didnt continue my physio. and i didnt do much physical practice up till today. But i go for massage sometimes once a week or more but sometimes i dont go for a long time. Today i did some research and found out that best is to prevent stiffness because the longer a muscle is without nerve input, the less likely it is that the muscle will function normally in the future. This is true even if the muscle eventually recovers its nerve signals. . and i was like damn.
my bicep and lower part of my elbow is stiff. I cant turn my hand to the right fully because of the stiffness. But I can fully carry my hands using my shoulder or elbow. Just cant is turning degrees. I really should start doing physical exercise. Maybe you should try going for electric acupuncture and see how it goes. Heard its really good for the nerve overtime.
I know it's important to balance sides so you want to work the injured and uninjured side... But when starting these exercises initially, for example with the isometric exercises using the hand - would you use the unaffected side to resist? Also, with side lying - lay on affected side first? I'm an athletic trainer (so I absolutely love your videos for inspiration (and love when your dog is in them, too)) at the high school level so some of my athletes don't understand they'll feel discomfort while exercising or that I can't magically reduce their pain in one session - so any tips or added movement suggestions is appreciated (side note: I have a book on neurodynamics I received from my professor who is a PT but it doesn't discuss brachial plexus exercises so I really greatly appreciate this video (and your other videos for other injuries/pathologies, etc).
Thanks! The dogs always make the videos better :-) If they can still use their affected side (I know with some injuries they can't) to resist, that is best since you will then be working the arm and the neck/shoulder area. With the side lying, I would lay on the unaffected side first so you are using gravity for resistance. With all nerve injuries, you want to find that fine line of working the injured area, but not over fatiguing it (which can happen quickly depending on how severe the injury is). Sometimes, even desensitization techniques might help the nerves heal a little faster: ruclips.net/video/v_ScGu_IjG8/видео.html

I have a question about my daughter. When she was born she had bracial plexius and she went to therapy but when she got older and her arm started to heal it didn't heal the right way. Instead of her arm being straight it healed in a L shape. What does that mean
AskDoctorJo Ok, thank you ! But i'm really worried about any risks or complications that could occur following the surgery assuming that a surgical intervention would be required since i'm not really sure about the complexity of the operation.
You're welcome. Sadly there is risk with any surgery, so you will just have to consider the pros and cons, and decide with the guidance of your surgeon. Good luck.
Hey ik this video was posted a while back but I hope you can still help. I play football and got one of these about 2-3 months ago. When it happened my whole arm went numb and I couldn't move it for like 5 seconds and it gradually came back. Like I said it happened a while back but my arm is still numb in an area about the size of my palm and I've lost alot of strength in it that I'm having trouble getting back. I dont really care about the numbness or the awkwardness that much but I just want my strength back. It can usually do normal amounts of weights but it get s so tired and gives out after a few reps. I've started doing a dumbell curl and then extending my arm up which is alot more difficult after the injury but I'm hoping itll help. Could you please tell me if this is serious and how to get my strength back? I've worked so hard o cant let this hold me back. Hope you can help thanks!

Hello madam brachial plexus injury i had an accident good doctor who is good hospital l
Hi Dr. Jo, can you also your isometric exercises for shoulders along with this?? Thank you
They might also help.
Any ideas?
I think these are probably worth a try. Also, do you have access to a pool?
hii mam..my case is about 7 years old..i remember that i played cricket after long time and was doing fast bowling through which it came. as i was playing after months so little muscles strech was there i thought initially..it remained for 2 or 3 days and all of it gone disappeared except that back shoulder pain on left side, pain on left side of head and neck. i have gone through nurology, examined migrane and all. got nothing as positive..my case is not extreme. but i can tell my cases which are
1) running is best exercise and i love it. when i do running this pain gets enhanced so usually i dont run now.
2) when pain is more then inhaling extreme from left side of nose takes much effort, and i feel some pain in chest on left side
3) there is continuous some heaviness in left side of head and back neck, get increased if i do any weighing type of work
4) when i move my left hand in circular motion, then i gets muscles voice, seems like shoulder got some stiffness
whatever i have seen about this enjury it seems like brachial plexus..can you lease assist me more mam..it will be very kind of you mam

Dry needling done where? To what muscles?

I sustained a (R) brachial plexus injury to C6, C7 & T1 in 1994 and have learned to live with my disabilities. Would these exercises have any effect on Phantom Pain? That seems to be the most debilitating thing I am encountering these days.

Great work! How often should i do these and for how long?

How often should these be done? Once a day or more? Thanks!
You're welcome. It really depends on how severe your case is and if you've been cleared by your doctor to return to running activities.
Thank you so much. Wonderful. Helpful.
You're welcome, and thanks!

hellow how are? please can you explaine for me the différence between : Taping, Strapping and K-taping ?
+RUclips Kine In general, or for a specific area?
in general, because i'm evry time i have some one who say to me some thing different, i would like to have your explication for this termes, or if you can do a video about this diffrence :)
Good luck!
yes alot think you very much

Sounds like you are doing everything you should. I don't really have any other suggestions besides this video.
Heard its really good for the nerve overtime.
hi dr jo I have patient with post masectomy and she is now suffer frm brachial plexues injury
Hopefully the above stretches will help.
Can i use these exercise after Dislocation sholder, stifness of sholder
Plz rply
