The paddles, when used in "D" drive mode, work just like they do in most other Lexus and Toyota products. They are more of a gear limiter than an actual manual shift action. So, if it says "D5" on the display, the highest gear it will chose is fifth gear. You have to go manual if you want responsive upshifts. Same deal in my IS 500, 'twas the same in my IS 350 before that, and even in other Toyota and Lexus models I've driven over time, that has been the case. The only time you have manual control in a Toyota or Lexus is when the gear selector is in "M" mode. If the car doesn't have an "M" mode - for example, a Lexus ES 350 - it does not have a true manual mode.
I'm certainly glad to see the "M" in this car, but from the way this gearbox seems to perform, that should not be a concern at all. This looks great.

In Canada you can get the MK8 GTI Autobahn with DCC for under $44,000 CAD OTD.
The GR Corolla premium is $67,000 CAD without markups.
The price difference is wild just for AWD.
The GTI is just as fast outside of a launch, so much nicer inside, and very tuneable.
If Toyota wants to sell these cars to enthusiasts, they really need to reconsider their pricing.

The GTI is very subdued, they really blend-in, hence why they sell so well, a lot of non-car enthusiast buy them aswell. This GR Corolla is a catered enthusiast option out of the box, and that costs money. Is it worth $67,000 CAD? No. Truly no new car is worth the price nowadays.

As an Elantra N DCT owner, I was genuinely shocked they didn’t go with a dual clutch, but it sounds like the conventional torque converter auto is pretty good. I never drove a Camry TRD when I was cross shopping it against the Elantra N, but all the reviewers said it was not a good transmission. Too bad the rear seat and hatch are so cramped. I’m a big fan of Toyotas, especially their AWD systems, so I’d consider the Corolla GR if it was large enough to fit me and my family of four, but there’s no way I’d make my kids suffer back there lol. One amazing thing about the EN is how much rear seat room it has. Great review as always!

The new Autos are insanely good. Look at the BMW, Audis, Dodge and many more with ZF autos. Even the Supras. They fine tuned these transmissions and they have crazy fast speed sensors (solenoids) that acts very quickly. In my opinion they nailed it on the Corolla GR.

It’s not the dealers, Toyota demands $49,125 on their website for what Topher reviewed. After destination and dealer options (markups) it’s over $52K OTD. People cherry pick bad moments of reliability for the GR Corolla, same applies to Mustangs. Which brings up my next point, what irrational emotional person chooses this GR Corolla over a Mustang GT that’s better in every way. The Coyote V8 has been refined over and over and over just like Toyota does for their inline 4. Also another point, $52K OTD, when a Lexus V8 from IS500 is $60K ($62K OTD). GR Corolla is inexcusably overpriced and low quality, there is no inflation excuse, they’re trying to compete with VW with none of the effort which is sad. People obsessed with the idea of a “hot hatch” will buy this car regardless and will convince themselves they weren’t ripped off. It’s Honda all over again, banking on nostalgia while making no additional power or quality upgrades to justify the near $50K pricing OTD while K20 still overheats from the coolant system, not oil cooler.

He decided to have his "wrapped" with some kind of clear wrap. Otherwise, the manual warns against rain and other things. Hardly practical. Nice to see this in an auto. As much as I'm not an auto guy, if it helps keep sales volume high enough to justify continuing to make and sell cars like this, I'm all for it. Some takeaways coming from a 23 GRC owner, the sound of the auto is a bit strange to me. I am hearing less of the high strung tone but moreso of a deeper tone. There’s much less drama driving the 25 in drive mode, he’s constantly shifting it to manual mode to get some excitement out of the car. Maybe its just me but the turbo spools to the limit much more faster which can be both good and bad. Some positives is that the revs are much lower on the highest gear so my guess its even greater on gas on highway speeds! There’s 4 icons showing on the temperature guage on the left of the screen whereas the 23-24 only has 3. The HUD is very cool looking. I wish I could have that on mine. Overall, I think the 25 auto is still a great addition to the line up, though the price is pretty steep for what you get.
