Just played 200 hands of video poker at wizard of odds. I made 12 mistakes and was down by 110.
Guess I will order Bob's cd rom.
You can turn on 'warn on strategy errors' and it will break down your mistakes. After awhile you see the pattern of what to do and why it makes sense.
There are lots of reviewers here who just want to get rich quick. If you want to make a million at VP, you're going to have to put the work in. I listen to Bob and Richard's podcasts, and those guys have years of gained knowledge. The proof that Bob has made the money is because casinos have hired him as a consultant to protect against players from milking the system.
So he's selling players on the idea that they can beat the casino based on the slot clubs, while at the same time he's teaching casinos how to stop that. You don't see the issue there? By definition he has to be scamming one of the two, and it's most likely that he's scamming the players. For example, MGM has so severely cracked down on their VP across all their properties that it's not possible to play with a positive expected value on their machines.
This is good information and its possible that it can be done. The one thing that most people don,t have if they are kind of anxious and aren,t in real good financial shape is a big bankroll and Luck and perfect strategy!!!!!

i read 1 out 65,000 to hit the royal flush so if u get nothing some small ir medium hits time u hit a royal u be thousands in the hole. same thing hitting a j.p in slots so how is it ltr is better .
Referencing this interview and if all being equal, Steve would be a better teacher than Bob.
I've sit in on a lot of engineering sessions over the years and I had noticed that were the teachers and then there were the talkers in any one session. I guess that the style of delivery was the key.

However to make real money you need luck. There many times you need just 1 card for royal flash but the probability to get right one card 1/47.
What I don't like about the training software is that if you make a mistake, it just tells you are wrong. It doesn't tell you why the play you made is wrong which I think is an important part of learning.
Some of them will. They will tell you how many coins bet your decision would cost you and what the correct play is
Most trainers will allow you to see all the ways to play the card and the EV for each play. You can do the math yourself to verify. The Dancer books also take a deep dive into the math for the close plays.
Ok, so essentially you are playing for the comps, perfect play = 99.5% payback + comps = profit.
I lost $1,000 last night playing 9/6 Jacks of Better doing almost perfect strategy. 9/6 JoB should have at least 99% payback.

You are correct sir. The ONLY way to beat the house is by using the comps. I live 200 days a year at casinos , no resort fees,…just occasional state tax like $7 a night.
Question I play video poker recreationally and I play full play jacks or better I know strategy and if the machine pays 99% (I make some mistakes) I just seems baffling that some casinos won’t rebate that 1% back is that because they are aware you will have an edge if they rebate more
They may rebate that 1% back to you in the form of cashback, bounceback and comps. However, the casinos want to make money so those benefits are usually greatly reduced on all full-pay video poker machines.

I found a casino in Louisiana (Coushatta) that has 1 Multi Strike machine. It has 3 demominations: .25 .50 $1
The .25 and .50 has a 97% payback or better while the $1 has a 98% or better payback
As far as I know this casino does not have very many promotions for video poker, so is this even worth playing

No that's a terrible video poker game. Unless you don't mind losing in the long run. If that's the best your casino has your best bet is to look from a game with progressive jackpot. Once the jackpot is high enough you have a postive EV situation.
Rough crowd here. Let's get the facts straight though, Bob is beating the slot club/promotions, not the games themselves. He's not like us table games AP's where we straight up beat the games WITHOUT using a players card. If he didn't get those promos, extra points, drawings, etc., we'd never hear from him. It's a tough grind.
Anyone making money consistently in a casino is facing a tough grind. I know a few professional gamblers and I would describe it as a hard way to make an easy living. The general public thinks it would be great to be a professional gambler, but that is a fantasy because the reality is much different. There can be long periods of time where, even though the player is making the correct decision, he/she can have bad luck and lose a lot of money. This would take a psychological toll on most people and they would not be able to handle it. Then, if the player does get a run of good luck on his/her side the casino will probably take a closer look at their account to see why that is happening and they may get banned. So, while the general public thinks a professional player can to a casino and win all the time, that just doesn't happen.
True but skilled gambling is still sometimes the only way for many average people who aren't doctors or lawyers to make 100k a year, or achieve $1 million dollars like Bob. It can be a grind but unlike a regular job where you're hourly earnings are capped, in gambling your earnings are based on your skills and determination, and the sky is the limit.
@@skyedge3407 It's true professional gamblers can make a great wage but it's worth noting there is something of a limit to how much you can make. A card counter or video poker player with the biggest bankroll in the world probably isn't making over $1 million a year no matter what hours they put in, they're limited by table maxes and backoffs.

I don't believe it would make a difference. You would have to have a higher theoretical loss to get more free play.

Years ago, when machines paid out in coins, rather than tickets, there used to be change girls on the floor who would change paper currency into rolls of coins so they could be played in the machines. Sometimes players would ask the change girls where the "hot" machines were. The players thought that the change girls would know this information and it would help them win. In reality, the change girls didn't really know anything, but they would send players to certain machines in the hopes that the player would win and then give them a good tip.

@@TheJackpotGents I remember very well how fun video poker was over 20 years ago before those awful vouchers replaced the coin machines. I used to play at The Tropicana and Taj Mahal in Atlantic city back then every week and had the greatest fun playing these old machines. I still remember playing all day many many times on 100.00 or less in rolled quarters getting many straight flushes and the coins would pay out the bottom of the machine when you were over 500 credits. I'm referring to the old I G T Jokers Wild Machines from the 80s.How about people including me having buckets full of quarters next to your machine with lots of credits on the machine as well and the attendant had to come fill up the machine many times because it ran out. The other great thing was when you got a 5 of a kind it would lock and ring loudly and play all kinds of nifty tunes like you're in the money! And you waited for a while to get paid by hand 1000.00 and I would tip the attendant and the security guard and people I was friendly with sitting on either side of me! Does anyone remember this ? I do like it was yesterday! You'll never see days like this again Ever!!!!!

So if Bob had gotten Unlucky that first six months (and unlucky DOES happen) would this interview still have existed?
The +EV opportunities PRE-2000 were ridiculous compared to now.
If he had been unlucky during that six month period he certainly wouldn't have written that book. However, if you read Million Dollar Video Poker, he was able to win most of that money because he found a flaw in some machines where the players club was giving too much cash back. There are a lot of pros, or extremely knowledgeable players, video poker players out there in the gambling world, but Bob might be the only one who is willing to sit down for a video interview. All of the others prefer to remain anonymous.

Giving away secrets writing how-to books is not wise for the gambling community as a whole. It only creates more competition. You may get some gullible minnows in the beginning, but some of them will become bigger fish and you helped them get into the business. Authors write books to make a couple of million that they won't have to make by gambling. Once they're done with it, they're done with it.
Dancer's story is not copyable. Betting on finding machine with flaw is complete luck and unpredictable. He should stop misleading people to play VP coz you if that's the way to make money, why Dancer wouldn't play any more himself?!
nomearod Because it's a grind. Being a professional gambler is not fun, there are huge swings no matter what you do or how good you are, there are times when you will have a losing streak and lose real money. You have to be sure your bankroll can withstand that loss. But to me the most significant thing is the monotony and tediousness of the thing; it is NOT fun or easy sitting in front of a VP machine for hours at a time, playing 700 or so hands an hour, trying not to make a single mistake, all in an attempt to not lose too much before you hit the highly elusive Royal that comes only once in 40,000 hands on average.

How can you make sure to have the edge and not the house in "Online Video Poker". I have never seen a machine that pays out more than 100%, the discounts or promotions are never for video poker, but for live dealer games or slots. Maybe the occasional Texas Holdem Poker discount but never seen one for Video Poker. Or do I have to play in local land based casinos? Here in the Germany and Netherlands I have never seen a Virtual Poker machine in a casino.
So how can one become a professional at this game? I think its almost impossible nowadays (Offline & Online) unless i am missing something. (Buying the books doesn't make the payouts better, nor does it increase my EV on a "house edge Machine". The Edge is going to grind us all down in the end. We cant even fulfill the first principle of successful gambling: "Make sure you have the advantage before you play" This is where the whole house of cards just collapses into itself...
+Doctor Maxi You don't necessarily have to play machines that pay back over 100% by themselves. The process Bob gives in the video can apply anywhere if you can find any machines coupled with a players club and other benefits that give you a positive return. You can find video poker machines that return over 100% in some Nevada casinos. Mostly locals casinos near Las Vegas, but there are also a lot in the Reno area.
Im sorry for not being clear enough. My comment was referring to online casinos and offline land based casinos in the EU. (Basically not in the US). I know there are no +100% payout machines. That can only be done through the special events you mentioned.
1. Online Casinos dont give benefits for Virtual Poker because they want to prevent exactly what you are talking about. I mean they are not dumb and they could just as well watch all your videos. They dont want advantage players in their casinos. Like I said earlier: "the discounts or promotions are never for video poker, but for live dealer games or slots. +Doctor Maxi Generally, people take advantage of the casino bonuses in order to get an edge over online casinos. You have to do the math to see if the bonus is greater than the casino edge in the game you want to play. There could be a lot of short-term variance, where your bankroll will fluctuate, but if your math is correct you should make money in the long run.

As stated in the video, you just need to find good machines, with a generous players club and that would allow you to play at an advantage. If you found a situation where you had a 1% advantage then, theoretically, you would earn $5,000 for the year if you put $500,000 through the machines during that year.

If you devote 100% of your life to video poker there is a good chance you will win a cheap jacket with the casino logo. If you get too lucky and start winning multiple cheap jackets you will simply get banned from every casino on the planet. Let's not forget all the money you have to pay to learn how to beat the odds that long term are never in your favor. Stay in school kids.
If you just follow the basic information in this video anyone can learn how to be a good video poker player. You don't have to take it to the extent of becoming a professional player. Most people go to casinos and play penny slot machines which have a very high casino advantage of around 12%. If players were to switch to video poker they would be facing house edges of around 2% and their money would last a lot longer.
Bob dancer is the reason video poker machines are tighter
There are so many derogatory comments here. But this video is quite eye-opening. It seems to get to the nitty-gritty truth about all those "Don't play slots, play video poker" videos: Unless you are 99.99% perfect in your strategy, in truth, they are barely, marginally better than slots. And the only "advantage" that makes them better is that you "know the odds" of payback. You have said yourself, Steve, that looking at the table shows the odds. But does it? It doesn't show you how often you'll win, it just shows how much you will IF you get a winning hand. I have tried for months now to find a way to convince my wife that they are better than slots. Yet she, almost on a regular basis, beats me in points played and money won back. Does this mean I suck? Likely. But this interview does little for encouragement. Because the truth finally comes out that unless you are at the skill level of this guy, which the recreational player will never be, I just don't see it as promising as I did 30 minutes ago.
You can learn to read a video poker pay table to understand what a machine is programmed to pay back to the public. For example, a 9/6 jacks or better game is programmed to pay back 99.54% with perfect play and maximum coins bet. That is a long-term number assuming that you make the correct decision every time. Most people won't play that well, but most of the hands you are dealt will be somewhat intuitive. So, even if you don't know how to play every hand perfectly, I would think you could play within 3% of the maximum return. So, you are still getting a 96.54% return, which is better than what you will get on slot machines. If you do some work and study a strategy chart you can get much closer to that 99.54% level. Almost all of them will give you less points for playing video poker than slots. That's because they make less money on those games than they do on slots.

+JBlinky67 All I can say is, READ THE BOOKS and get the Software, Win Poker is a great program, and Bob's series of books will tell you how to play the games perfectly, every bit as good as a computer if you want to. The software also lets you practice and analyze the game/hands if you want.

That's absolutely not true. First off, the advantage of Video Poker compared to a slot machine is not just that you "know the odds of payback," but that you can actually get 100+% payback in the long-term, that is to say that VP is a winning game in the long run, it is possible to win consistently through skill, one cannot say that for any slot machine. I don't believe any standard slot machine offers a long-term positive payback, to win you MUST be lucky in the short-term, and the more/longer you play the more likely you are to lose your money. I don't know about you, but I don't want to depend on luck when I'm gambling. Also, a slot machine offers you no control over what happens, while in VP(which is a skill) using strategy one can play in such a way as to gain the advantage. Sure, luck will always be a part of the game, all casino games are based on probabilities, but I want to control everything I can, and when you learn how to play Video Poker expertly you will know how to turn the advantage to your favor.
As for the odds of how often you'll win at Video poker, if I remember right, Dan Paymar's book does break down the paytable of a few games and tells you the percentage payback each hand contributes to the overall payout. I think it also says on average how often you will get each hand. I think 4 of a kind was something like 1 in 20 hands in Deuces Wild for example. In particular, I remember that playing the optimal strategy, that is the making the proper highest EV(expected value) play for each hand, on average one will hit a Royal Flush about once in every 40,000 hands, I believe that was for both J-o-B and Deuces Wild. You know, both Video Poker and Blackjack are practically sciences these days, they use very sophisticated math and computers to both simulate and analyze the game.
I've been to Vegas once and would hardly even call myself a recreational player, but I would say in about a month's time I was able to learn how to play both Jacks or Better and Full pay Deuces Wild nearly as good as a computer. Like I said, Bob Dancer's books and software will teach you the strategy of how to play perfectly, and allow you to practice till you can do it. There was a time I could play almost 1000 hands per hour making less than 3 mistakes valued at less than -0.3% in payback. So I assure you that it can be done, and you don't have to be some kind of genius either. But I did work really hard, read numerous books cover to cover and practiced for hours before I felt confident I could play for money. And I would say that learning video poker is significantly easier than learning to count cards in Blackjack. To me, doing that right takes hours of study and practice every day over a period of months. There is more to calculate, more to remember, more to do. And in my opinion, you don't practice counting cards on a computer, you need to actually get real cards and chips, then simulate the playing environment, something which is far more involved than just remembering a few rules for which cards to hold in a Video Poker hand.
Interesting though that ACG live streams often features slots. They are fun and give more out in comps (although you are losing much more). If you are drunk slots and VP may be similar in net pay back. Although the obvious solution is to not drink while playing (or at least slow down and play lower denomination when woozy).

If you are making a living as a professional video poker player, then you actually do have a "job." As explained in the video, it is a difficult thing to try and become a professional player and few people ever achieve it. The best knowledge that someone can gain from watching the video is to understand the process and learn what is needed to achieve it. You don't need to take it as far as becoming a professional player, but just learn what is needed and you can play a practically break-even game with the casino. This way you can have fun without it costing you a lot of money. Keep in mind that most casino-goers only play slots and they end up big losers because they are playing games with 10%+ house edges. If they would take the time to learn proper video poker play they would be much better off.

As with most things in life, if it was easy to do then everybody would be doing it. The problem is that it takes work and somewhat of a mathematical mind. Most people don't want to be bothered. They just want to push the button and win some money. It isn't that easy!

Not exactly. Many casinos give out sometimes $250 in free play 3x a week once you establish a history of high roller play. They are trying to goad you into losing more money. If you play for 3 hours a day on 4 days, 12 hours that week. And you convert the $250 free play on a 99.5% game to $240 cash, 3x that week. Its $720 for 12 hours of play. That's $60 an hour. Far above minimum wage. Plus the free rooms, sometimes air fare, promotional drawings such as cars and cash.

That's funny how he says 'it's not suppose to be an informercial' but then makes it one. If you're living in Vegas, what's the advantage of a 4 night hotel room comp unless you're homeless? Is it to get off the sidewalk for 4 nights? Is it to save time and bus fare to the casino for 4 days only? Parking fees? How are you computing yearly income, whether it's $5K or $40K? Are you valuing meals at full casino menu prices? $100 retail per meal? $300/night for a room?
This is a nothing but a commercial for his books. This guy is full of it. I’ve played video poker for years as well, and let me tell you, its not always a certain strategy like playing the odds. Sometimes its just instinct and knowing that machine.
Every game in the casino is based on math. When it comes to video poker there is only one mathematically correct way to play any hand. If you are going to play video poker then you should take the time and effort to learn how to play your hands correctly rather than relying on hunches.
if you find the 100.76% deuces machine 25c...and do 500 hands an hour @ $1.25 for 40 hrs a week, 52 weeks a year and you hit the LT % you might make $10,000 a year... maybe an additional $5000 with freeplay/comps... that's barely minimum wage... MORE IMPORTANTLY you are inhaling copious amounts of cig smoke 40 hrs a week, 52 weeks a year. totally asinine .. for those with brains you do swing trading...
matthoward23 that's why this guy is selling guides, website clicks and helper cards. Because back in the day it was beatable. Everyone sold guides, everyone learned how to beat VP and the casinos adjusted their edge.
Eric Ritchie Actually Eric, while that may be true, that "everyone sold guides," that doesn't mean that everyone read them and really understood them, then practiced to the point where they could actually consistently win at the games. In fact, the casinos loved it, more people came in and lost more money than ever. The people just heard there are games that you can win at, they didn't bother to realize that to do so requires hard work; one has to learn the strategy and practice for many hours before they will be able to do it.
+matthoward23 I think professional VP players actually play more like 700+ hands per hour, so at $1.25 per hand and 700 hands per hour, they're playing 700 x $1.25 = $875 per hour. Personally, I have even played 800+ hands per hour without difficulty, and my training program even clocked me at 988 hands per hour, not that I'd want to sustain that pace though.
Then, once they've won enough to increase their bankroll, they move up to higher denomination games, or at least multi-play. That way they can bet more. I believe on a multiplay game the variance is slightly reduced as well. so somewhat less risk.
At the same time, I would think many players are card counters as well, so they play blackjack. There you can get more money on the table, more than $875/hour. At 40 hands of BJ an hour that's only an average of about $22/hand.
Then I'd take a little money, just a small portion of the winnings, and see if I could find a good slot machine, you never know, you might get lucky and hit something worthwhile. I'm not talking megabucks here, but you know, just three or four hundred once in a while could add up.
But I do generally agree with you, those with brains should be doing some kind of stock trading. Edward Thorpe, the mathematics professor and father of card counting actually took the method he devised for Blackjack and modified it for use in trading, some kind of over/under imbalance thing. I believe he lost his 10 silver dollars at the casino back in the '50s, but his finding started an industry, and he went on to make about $200 million trading on Wall Street.

Playing a game which overall pays less than 100% with perfect strategy is a guaranteed way to lose. The strategy becomes a complete useless thing if the overall return is less than 100%. You will be a loser. Just remember, play for fun only.
As discussed in the video, you need to add the benefits from the players club into the equation. In some instances, that will bring the return to over 100%.

You need to learn 2 versions of VP and play darn near perfectly and you can win. I prefer Jacks or Better and Bonus Poker. My husband loves Deuces Wild and Double Bonus. Find a game you like and learn everything you can. Get software like Bob Dancer's, you'll either learn or discover you would rather not put the time in to get really good. Best advice is do not drink alcohol and play VP. Ignore anything that can break your concentration or stop playing to have a conversation. I've had more than one VP machine go nuts and give me great hand after great hand up to the royal. Those are the machines that you play and play. Machines can go stone cold, you get a feel for a machine and know when to walk away. Video poker is great fun. I've gone a couple of years without a Royal and my last trip to Vegas I got 3 of them. One was dealt to me! 😲You just never know but it's a great way to get comps and not, hopefully, squander your kids college funds.

I don't understand why anyone would bother learning and using 'strategies' for games that are less than the best games to be playing in the first place. Do people somehow get off on the fact that 2's are wild, even if the return to players is less than the machine right next to it? That's nuts. And why should only Baptist deacons avoid the sex books? Are Methodists and Presbyterian deacons more likely to enjoy them? Perhaps so, since they somehow think gays can be 'married.' Even some Baptists have gone off the deep end, putting gays in positions of church leadership, but I digress....

joe doe VP is a great game to just go and hangout at the casino without losing a lot of your bankroll. The only way to make a lot of money is roll the dice and attempt to hit the progressive jackpot. But then your bankroll will take a serious hit.

Realistically, I would say that the only thing you need to become a better video poker player is software. WinPoker is good, and it's the least expensive to buy, but that program doesn't allow you to print out strategy charts. It's worth spending a little extra to have software that let's you print out your own strategy charts. If you practice on software you will become quite proficient in playing about 98% of yourl hands. However, once in a while, you will be dealt a hand where you are not quite sure how to play it. That's when it's good to have the strategy chart with you. In the end, the extra cost will more than pay for itself. Kyle Fosnaugh I play "normal" Poker (Texas Hold'em, I'm a winning player and the best player in the vast majority of games I play in. The way he talks might sound arrogant to many people but I understand where he's coming from. Actually mastering a game and make a living by playing it (I didn't achieve either (yet)) is extremely difficult. You have to invest much time and have to build your life around that goal. If friends ask me how to make money from Poker I tell them that it's possible but not easy at all and that they shouldn't think that they can achieve that in little time without any pain and effort.
I don't think he's arrogant. The point is that it is much harder to achieve today than it was 20 years ago (same with Texas Hold'em) and that it will take much time, effort and sacrifice to achieve that and even if you invested all these things you aren't guaranteed to make a decent living.

There are lots of professional gamblers out there. You just don't know anything about gambling so you don't believe it. have to actually The information in the video is all factually correct and it can make anyone a much smarter gambler, even if they don't want to take it to the professional level.
yes that thought is legit, but the counterpart is too. He said exactly what you need and thats difficult. The higher your Profit target is , you have less chance to achieve it. But at the lower end of 5000 per year , its easier than 40k. When i started Online Poker(Cashgame+Tournament) i gave up after the 2nd year because i thought it was scam. After 1 year of a break i started with freerolls for the fun. I realised that i beat 95% of the opponents in tournaments and was curouis if i should start realmoney again. I started with a Bankroll of 0-$ (i won a free 1$ Tournament ticket from a promotion). Since then i multiplied my bankroll climbed up to several hundrets (374-$ atm) after 1 year and 9 months. I dont play fulltime just a side project. Now when i look back i understand my Errors i made in the second year:
- i was pushing too hard (unrealistic expectations),
- didnt understand porpabillity and statistics for 100% and
- didn't study myself in which games i make money (i win only Tournaments, No cashgame).
and which game makes the most money for me (touraments with a wide payouts where 15-10% get in the money
i look back i smile what would happend if i didn't won money that 1$ Tournament, propably i still though online poker is scam xD.
Also remember when you win play breakeven its still a win, because you didn't loose, exept time.
But if you enjoy the Time its not a waste, if you dont enjoy it stop doing it.
Your wisdom is actually 99% correct and 99% of people out there need to listen to this advice as a general rule for most games and situations in the casino. And I've certainly seen books that are complete shams because no matter what system you employ, you can never beat the mathematical house edge of casino games in the long run. It's math. And so, you're right... 99% right.
BUT!!!... I believe there are at least 3 games that can be beaten. 1) Blackjack, playing perfect basic strategy + card counting. By doing this, you will have situations where the mathematical house edge is eliminated and actually swings in your favor. So again, it's math, but this is a rare occasion among casino games that the edge will swing in your favor at times. 2) Poker, the kind where you're playing against other players (e.g., Texas Hold 'em). You're not playing against the house so your skill level vs. other players becomes a big factor. 3) VIDEO POKER, yes, because of the 99% payback + club rewards can compensate for the -1% and put you ahead. There are even machines that pay back 101%! Add to that club rewards and you're definitely ahead. So again, it's math, but you're putting the numbers in your favor.
As far as making a real living with video poker, I can see why it's possible but it seems extraordinarily difficult because you have only a tiny edge as your profit. So I gotta believe that you have to be playing some serious units in the machine for the small edges to be financially rewarding.
I would agree with your comments. One thing that Bob and I did not discuss in that video, and I probably should have, is how many people do you think go broke trying to become professional players? Even if you play expertly, it's still quite possible to have a long run of bad luck which can wipe out your bankroll. So, the aspect of being sure to never over-bet your bankroll was not really discussed in the video.
Hyper Hektor I have a somewhat similar history when it comes playing Poker. I started out online, lost a couple of hundred dollars over a couple of months and was really frustrated because it looked so easy when the high stakes players played on TV.
At some point I started playing life, I went to a local Pool Hall which also organized Poker Tournaments and started playing there. I did relatively well (the skill level in live Poker is much lower than online) and found a couple of guys who I got along very well with. We all were university students and started talking about strategy. It really fired me up to become better. So I started learning theory by watching videos and reading books.
Now (about 3 years after I first played online) I play regularly life cashgames (sometimes tournaments)and manage to generate a steady income by playing. I study regularly and started learning advanced strategies and I have become the best player in most games I play in. Many of these guys I would call friends by now and I flew with one guy to Vegas for the first time earlier this year (I' live in Europe) and managed to win $4000 within one week in only the lowest stake games.
It is actually hard, you need to endure a lot of frustration and put much work in to become really good at any game to make money by playing. But once you achieved it it's a great feeling.
