  • Steve Bourie, interviews gambling author Jean Scott about how she and her husband, Brad, were able to win more than one million dollars gambling in casinos. Jean explains how they started off as 25-cent players and worked their way up to higher stakes. She talks about some of their bigger wins, as well as some of their worst losses. Jean also gives tips for other players on how they can learn to be successful casino gamblers. Note: this is an edited version of a video originally released in May, 2016.

      Anything that requires you risk your own money and where you're not guaranteed a paycheck at the end would be stressful. Video poker for me is just a fun thing to do. I expect to lose and if I win it's just icing. If I were trying to make money at it then it would stop being fun and I would stress too.

    Sounds like they made many wonderful memories together. I remember staying at New York New York on the day we're leaving and I had literally $5 left so I went down to play $.25 poker which is 4 hands. My husband laughed. Two hours later he came to find me and I had hit so many jackpots on one machine that we stayed another night and came home with thousands. I love video poker and anytime I win a hand pay I pull out what I spent then split the remaining. 1/2 goes into the bank and the other 1/2 is set aside to play with or buy some non-essential item. Works well for me.

    My mom has learned how to bankroll all the comps too. She gambles as a stress reliever, where as gambling stresses me out! I'm a twin and we were born on her birthday. Every year for our birthdays she takes us to the steakhouse on the penthouse floor of our local casino and uses her comps to pay for everything. After dinner we'll go down to the casino and she'll put $100 in one of the $5 slots and we'll all take turns hitting the button. If we win, we all split it. If we dont hit anything, she'll give everyone $20 to go play whatever we want. My brother and husband both like the tables. My sister-in-law usually finds a penny slot machine. My step dad just plays whatever my Mom is playing. Meanwhile, I'll wander around nervously for a few minutes before going back to my mom and asking her for her room key so I can go soak in the giant bathtub in her suite while they all gamble. At the end of the night, my anxiety has disappeared and I've still got my $20. I always go home a winner. 🥩🍹🎂🎰💵🛀❤️

    From 99 to 08 my girl and I were like fixtures at the Silverton. We were Big video poker players, and I can tell you we never paid for anything at the Casino, from rooms, restaurants, shows, gift shop and back then both of us smoked, me about 3 packs a day. I never paid for cigarettes the whole time I was in Vegas. We had over 2.5 million points apiece. So our points paid for everything, and I mean everything. On average I would say we were there 4 nights a week. We would usually get there somewhere between 8 and 10 pm, have dinner, always steak and lobster, we would play until 5 or 6 am, and a lot of Friday’s and Saturday’s until noon or later. We absolutely loved that place.

    It truly is all about the comps. Free meals, free play, and free stay. Just maintaining a certain status with a casino gives you more options than say other people who don't. Almost like a special relationship with a business. I dont even remember what it is like paying for a meal or even a room when I go to gamble anymore. That alone makes the experience more enjoyable knowing that you can not only enjoy a "free" weekend , you can bring family and friends too. Everything she says is 100% true. I just wish I had the time and $ to shoot for a million lol. Great informative video.

    • @THE-RED-LETTER-PROJECT

      Free meals, play, and rooms😂😂😂 that is the most misleading thing I've heard in a while. Unless you've never stepped foot in a casino and are just rambling. Staying in that free room can be extremely expensive. 10 minutes at the black jack table you could've paid for that crap room 3 times. Nothing in a casino is "free" I've spent $100 just waiting for my "free" drink I could've bought 3 damn bottles.

    • @themountainwanderer
      @themountainwanderer 2 года назад

      You get it for free, but only if you cycle through enough money to earn the points you need for this 'free' stuff. Which means you will pay the casino by way of the edge in the pay tables (averaged over time).

    • @THE-RED-LETTER-PROJECT
      @THE-RED-LETTER-PROJECT 2 года назад +2

      @@themountainwanderer Ok, I understand you don't know me or what I know about casinos. I'm in my 40s and for 20 solid years straight. After getting an engineering degree. I was a grinder playing poker in Oklahoma, then moved to Biloxi where the pokers rooms were not as spread out, with much more action. You understand you said in the same sentence you said "free" this and that, while you "pay" the casinos, makes no sense. After I would rack up my chips. I'd wait while my buddies downstairs playing 21 waiting on the "free" Rum and Coke, $200 dollars later she showed up with their "free" drinks. There is absolutely nothing free in a casino. At least poker doesn't involve the house or the house money. It's the locals and tourists, and I would make decisions of what I want to do with my chips and hand I'm dealt, depending on the personalities at the table and more importantly the betting patterns. One can make educated decisions. Please don't go around saying casinos will hand out a free room and dinner if you put a 20 slot machine. You could ruin a life.

    • @slloyd9892
      @slloyd9892 2 года назад +2

      Pretty sure I put Free in Quotes as we all know nothing is ever really free. There are times you win, times you lose. Do you choose where you gamble because they have "loose" slots or good comps? I literally know people who believe slots are more "loose" in certain places and tables are more "generous" in others. You spend more $ you get more comps we all get it. Question is, are you going to gamble and stay at a place that gives you no comps? I don't know anyone that does.

    I turned 21, went into a casino and promptly lost $80 in like 30 minutes playing various games. At that moment I decided I needed to do some reading. Well I spent the next month reading a dozen books, practicing on software, etc.
    Then I went back... about 100 times. I ended up pretty much gambling for free by doing some light card counting and 100% EV video poker. I was getting hotel rooms and buffets for playing $3 blackjack and nickel video poker.
    Things are so much different now tho, from 6:5 blackjack to 95% EV video poker to stricter comps. But that does not mean you should not read.

      Yes. They can be changed at any time. However, casinos don't constantly change them back and forth. They would just make the change one time and probably stay with that change. Keep in mind that you can always look at the pay table before playing to see if it has been changed. You can never do that with a slot machine.

      Exactly, she got lucky winning a $500,000 slot tournament and getting dealt a royal flush on a multiple line poker machine. NOTHING that she can tell you to help you win but if she is selling books, good for her. No skill whatsoever in slots and very little strategy in video poker. Only strategy is playing at the casino with highest payout percentage. Or maybe if in Vegas you go casino to casino looking for a video poker machine that has a high progressive jackpot that is due to hit. Some have a progressive jackpot for a royal flush. I only play video poker in Detroit when the progressive is over a certain amount. I still never hit it, lol. I get free rooms and eat free anytime I want but I'm losing plenty enough, so it isn't actually free of course. They don't roll out the red carpet for high rollers because they are losing money to the high rollers. If you can count cards, Blackjack would be the only game you could actually give yourself an advantage on over the casino. Anything else they will take your money in the long run.

    Fascinating interview. I have a couple of thoughts. First, the examples brought up, the dealt royal on the 100-play as well as the photos shown, are all very very rare and therefore extremely lucky hits. The average VP gambler will never see those. Second, for every successful gambler like this there are scores of failed gamblers with losses sometimes shockingly high. These disciplined (and lucky) people are rare. Yes, long term success is very hard to achieve, and it involves total commitment, taking advantage of any club benefits you can get as she pointed out (and casinos are constantly devaluing VP play) and scouting for good pay tables that are increasingly hard to find. Another thing you have to account for are the hours spent in the casino. There is a cost here as well. Could you have done something more worthwhile with all that time? I think in many cases the answer is pretty easy.

    • @hurleyboy899
      @hurleyboy899 2 года назад +5

      Yeah man, there are far more scores of people with a ton of losses playing then the rare instance of a winner here and there. I can attest to this. Wish I never picked up the habit, it can be quite costly with nothing to show for.
