Leavell, their decision to add a piano player, helped the ABB become an everlasting rock and roll force. I honestly believe, were DA still around, the band would've never done as well. He could turn great blues songs into a noisy mess at the end.
Today, the Allman brothers band would be categorized as “outlaw country” but we know rock and roll rhythm and blues when we hear it. I’m very thankful for the gift this great band shared with the world.
Even without Duane they played like no one else. Listen to this powerful funky blues, Dickey is also undisputed master of guitar. And one of the last Mohicans. Know what I mean.
By far the best duo guitarists in history. Wish duane was still alive. Just imagine how good eat a peach would have been if they finished it. No one played together better then duane and dicky.
I agree with Neven. Duane was a once in a lifetime type guitar player, but the Allman brothers still rocked on after he passed. In 1973, they may have been the best live tour going at the time
@@davidterry4152 My 23 year old son is a lead guitarist in an up and coming progressive rock band and he know well of Betts and his playing....yes....he's up there... And he told me...it was amazing how much massive guitar talent came out of the 60's and 70's...
Without DA, and with Chuck, they became a great band. DA founded the band, he was around a while, not long, then gone. Dickey Betts and Chuck Leavell kept the ABB relevant. Frankly, each and every one of them Needed the others to be successful. Hugely successful. This isn't my opinion, Facts are facts. I'm living proof, Dickey Betts is my favorite guitarist ever. Idlewild South was my first ABB album. Wipe the Windows I can't love enough. But I've Never bought 1 cassette tape, 8 track tape, cd, or anything else that Betts did outside the ABB. I did buy the GA Band stuff.
I grew up in a Baptist Church. And when I heard these boys play. IWAS SANCTIFIED. AMEN. THEY BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY ROOTS. JUST WAS ON HIGHWAY 49 THIS WEEKEND.
10 Thumbs down. 10 people that truely have absolutely no concept of music. More proof that there are those that love music and there are those that not only love music, the also understand it at a special level. This is absolutely incredible!
I said it in 73 when I saw them on June 9 & 10 with the Dead (and a new band nobody had ever heard of, the Marshall Tucker Band) Dickey Betts (and Chuck Leavell) saved this band from playing in dive bars in Macon Georgia....HOW SOON THEY FORGOT !!! STUNNING AND ESSENTIAL !!!
Within the first few notes he plays, Dickey Betts channels BB King. Tasty. And yes, Chuck Leavell's piano solo makes the song for me. Check out "Cats on the Coast" if you want more.
You can tell Dickey was a big BB King fan...Fillmore East album has alot of BB-inspired licks from Dickey! Ive been listening to the Live at Winterland '73 album, and it's awesome...I'd forgotten how tight this incarnation of ABB was
I'm not about to make a 'greatest' guitarists list, I'd never insult anyone by doing so, but when the ABB added Leavell, they ensured the ABB would last forever. These 3 went together like bread, peanut butter and jelly. As for me, there simply isn't anyone that can help me through an aerobic workout like Dickey Betts. There is no comparison to songs with DA, as opposed to after. DA, to me, was like Roy Buchanan. Great guitar player, but the playing eventually hurts your ears. This video clip, capturing Chuck, Greg, and Dickey, it's like the person that did it knew something that people would need to see 50 years down the road. My son, 22, can't get enough Chuck Leavell. He and Dickey, this group, they made the ABB.
Dickey wrote this tune as well as Jessica, Pony Boy and Ramblin' Man on the album "Brothers and Sisters".Berry Oakley played bass on Wasted Words and Ramblin' Man before his tragic motorcycle accident. It's a good album but the beginning of the end for the band.
Just IMAGINE Duane being up there bouncing off of Dickie?!?! This is a south bound rollin thunder train! Dickie so throws down! They all are! Timeless music! This could have been recorded today and it would still be far better than 99% of all music ever written. Imagine if they never got into drugs? Hard to believe that they were all such junkies.
I always liked it better when Gregg sang this instead of Dickie. I don't know how Gregg can see with his hair covering his face LOL. thanks for posting, RIP guys we miss you all so much. Good article with Derek Trucks talking about Gregg's legacy.www.rollingstone.com/music/features/derek-trucks-reflects-on-gregg-allmans-life-advice-and-legacy-w486682
Gregg played organ, Chuck played piano. Two very different instruments. Chuck Leavell's playing had a great and lasting effect on the Allman sound and was largely responsible for the success of the Brothers and Sisters album.
NO SECOND PIANO.....Gregg sat smacked up, at the organ...Chuck Leavell did all the heavy lifting on the piano and helped save the band from oblivion....
@@tometheridge4711 🤣 only you were confused. Anyone with a brain and ears can hear the organ and knows Gregg plays the B3 and not the piano. Plus his hands aren't doing anywhere close to what's coming from that piano and even my 6 yr old niece could tell you that.
This version is OK, but honestly the 1982 University of Florida version is much better… Dickey plays way better. Band was going through some tough times in 72-3
RIP Brother Dickey! Play on!
The music that helped me survive Disco!
Dickey sure wrote some sweet tunes. Rest in peace Sir.
Whoever gave this a thumbs-down doesn't know music. This is one of the best ABB songs and Greg totally rocks this!!!
Shelly Watson Indeed!
Shelly Watson Dickey is extremely underrated imho! Great player and songwriter!!
haters
Totally!
Led zeppelin fans
What a band..holy cow..nothing will ever be like what these guys had
that piano is what makes the song for sure plus Greg's voice
Funny thing is, Dickie always sang it, post-reunion
Leavell, their decision to add a piano player, helped the ABB become an everlasting rock and roll force. I honestly believe, were DA still around, the band would've never done as well. He could turn great blues songs into a noisy mess at the end.
Leavell is a worthy addition for any band. ABB, The Stones, anyone. One of the greatest sidemen ever. Smoking hot performance by all!
Rhythm section is what carries this.
Today, the Allman brothers band would be categorized as “outlaw country” but we know rock and roll rhythm and blues when we hear it.
I’m very thankful for the gift this great band shared with the world.

Dicky Betts is a true rock god. All these young guns should bend rite strait over and kiss his ass.
By far the best duo guitarists in history. Wish duane was still alive. Just imagine how good eat a peach would have been if they finished it. No one played together better then duane and dicky.

Dickey was totally killing it here 👍
He really killed it at the Hofstra University concert, especially rambling man.
Check out the Southbound from Winterland '73.
Ten people are clueless, that's obvious. Excellent footage and performance!! RIP to the Brothers passed on to the hereafter...
Best. Band. Ever.
Almost 50 years ago, still sounds brilliant.
Because it is.
Great performance. Man i miss these guys already. RIP Gregg, butch.
and now Dickey... 😞
Finally I get to see this song played live the way it was meant to be - like the record! They changed it all up soon after this. Awesome!
I LOVE this version!
How these incredible dudes met and then played is a secret of the universe
How could anyone not like this? Awesome!
Such an amazing band, never will I tire of their music….the best!
The original version of Southbound. Chuck smokes his solo. Lamar Williams was a monster on bass. And that voice.
Smokes his solo here, too. 20 years old! Dickey Betts? Not so much, but he wrote a great blues tune…
dickey smokes
I grew up in a Baptist Church. And when I heard these boys play. IWAS SANCTIFIED. AMEN. THEY BROUGHT ME BACK TO MY ROOTS. JUST WAS ON HIGHWAY 49 THIS WEEKEND.
Right on man....👍🏻
Playing at the Grand Opery House in Macon Georgia. Back at their roots
Fantastic version!!!

3:11 Love the hell out of that piano!
Chuck Leavell is a Monster.🎹🍄🎶✌️
Love chuck monster music legend, love his documentary

Damn... I love this song 😍😍😍
Chuck Leavell piano up high in the mix as deserved!!!
Dang, those boys could play!
Dickey's guitar sings so melodically
The Allman Brothers Band was great in Piedmont Park back in the day !
9 slickers watched this...no soul to dislike this masterpiece version of this song.
I'm a slicker , with plenty of soul
@@bugs4680 well you know good music atleast.
I saw them in Boston April 73'. Let's just say "it set the hook"!
.... roll them blues ... magic ....
My brothers
Let's all thank the camera man ❤
This is awesome!!!!!
❤ the best
Within the first few notes he plays, Dickey Betts channels BB King. Tasty. And yes,
Chuck Leavell's piano solo makes the song for me. Check out "Cats on the Coast" if you

Had the same thoughts concerning the guitar.,
Joel Cunningham yes the cats on the coast album was great album Lamar Williams Chuck leavell and jamo
You can tell Dickey was a big BB King fan...Fillmore East album has alot of BB-inspired licks from Dickey! Ive been listening to the Live at Winterland '73 album, and it's awesome...I'd forgotten how tight this incarnation of ABB was
Chuck saved the band

it capture the essence of the song -- fucking nice
Greg wanted to be known for his contribution to blue's ....r.i.p. ...greg allman .....peace .......
Love watching Gregg tickle the ivory
Dickey wrote this tune as well as Jessica, Pony Boy and Ramblin' Man on the album "Brothers and Sisters".Berry Oakley played bass on Wasted Words and Ramblin' Man before his tragic motorcycle accident. It's a good album but the beginning of the end for the band.
BLACK & WHITE DUANE & DICKIE BETTS PLAYING
I'd love to see one of those deluxe versions of the Brothers and Sisters LP...
wonder if there were a lotta good outtakes and such from that period...
there is...
R.I.P.Gregg...
Jimmy Carter was an early fan
Man they look wrong with just Dickey out there by himself. Wow. Les Brers for real.
RIP Dickey
Nice piano solo
piano makes the tune
Just think if chuck stayed with the band and didn’t go to The Rolling Stones
Just IMAGINE Duane being up there bouncing off of Dickie?!?! This is a south bound rollin thunder train! Dickie so throws down! They all are! Timeless music! Dickey seems like he is holding back....
Yep think.so too...maybe he feels so lost on stage at that time...
Btw this isn't Duane's guitar he's playing isn't it?
Ha ha....
Someone is missing RIP
THEY got a reason to be onstage...
Someone please tell me when this happened absolutely amazing 👍🤘
Why did they stop doing this intro in live performances, it's so boss
God dickey is so cool.
Does anyone know of this entire show? Any links?
Dickie Betts 4eva!!

Who's playing piano here? Greg's on organ...
Does anyone know the guitar Dicky is playing? No covers, zebra pups - this wasn’t Duane’s cherryburst....
Who's the guy playing the piano? Love it!!
Ljepota Chuck leavell
Duane's sound is really missing in this. Sad really. This is only 2 years after his death.
Jaimoe
They never needed a second piano player They look pretty coked up here
Why in the hell would they need a second piano player????
Gregg played organ, Chuck played piano. Two very different instruments. Chuck Leavell's playing had a great and lasting effect on the Allman sound and was largely responsible for the success of the Brothers and Sisters album.
NO SECOND PIANO.....Gregg sat smacked up, at the organ...Chuck Leavell did all the heavy lifting on the piano and helped save the band from oblivion....
the PIANO is CHUCK LEAVELL, not smackboy Gregg, despite the efforts of the TV director to confuse the viewer....

Without Duane, this band isn't worth watching - despite Greg's great singing.
...and yes, I do know music.
Nope
dicky betts struggling with duanes lead on southbound..like he just learned the part...not even close
Great song but an awful sound mix.
Mushroom band.
No organ sound till 2:20.. shame..
They were best with the black drummer.
This version is OK, but honestly the 1982 University of Florida version is much better… Dickey plays way better.
Band was going through some tough times in 72-3
