The limited elevator authority over 480 is a trademark of the 109 and made her much more difficult to control in that flight regime than the Spitfire. The 109 pilots were notorious for having to train for arm muscle.
You are stalling on top of the loop. Release back stick, the slats will come out, and she'll easily go over the top without stalling at all. Feed in lots of right rudder as you get closer to the top of the loop to keep her straight.
In comparison the Spitfire is a fun plane (as all the real-world sources say).

  • @voltracy

You have nailed the essential difference between the Spit and the Me on the head! The Spit was designed to be flown by amateur flyers after a minimum of fliying time in the machine. The Me 109 was designed like a Formula 1 racing car: air frame built around the machine, little regard for the man in the cockpit, needs an experienced hand at the stick.
In all the books on the Battle of Britain, the Spit pilots say, when asked which machine was better, that it was mainly a question of the pilot not the machine, who won the fight.
Even in the - easy to fly - Spit, inexperienced pilots (near the end of the BoB) were shot down more often by the Me 109E pilots who had more experience with their machine But at the end of the war, when only new pilots were put in the Me, after far too few hours in the airplane, they were overwhelmed, many even killed themselves during take off or landing.
In your video, I should have liked to see it flown at top speed (1.4 MP, 2500 revs)= >600 km/h. After all, she was made to race. The later FW 190 was meant as a „workhorse“, meant for low level fighting as well as bombing. I am looking forward to see a video of the FW in MSFS. In P3D, it handles well (Classics Hangar).

I do like when planes use km/h. It feels like it should be... (coming from old times ww2 german and Russian planes sim player). Also i adore their way of compass where you have north always up and the "toy plane" is moving around. Basically, its like the path on the map. If the little plane is going down that south.

The elevator trim, was actually the whole horizontal stabilizer itself, so at high speeds you'd turn the wheel and trim back for turning tight at higher speeds and then adjust it on the fly constantly in a dogfight etc. (DCS Experience)

Elevator authority was not something the 109 was known for. I admire your courage for looping it because I have spun it several times already. I think the sound is pretty good I do think the real-life 109 is more aggressive sounding. The 109 is definately one of the best sounding warbirds in real-life. As for elevator authority in the loop, I am no expert but I've had a good old go in her above Duxford, don't use full back stick and maybe, just maybe, use a bit of flap. I know that isn't a real life thing for most aircraft but you mentioned it too, it doesn't have a big wing area and relies on flaps and slats in order to turn at it's max rate. Not that you would turn and burn in a 109 in real life because it's a boomer zoomer, not a turner burner.

No it's not, the water cooled engine makes it fulnerable in air to ground combat. The FW 190 was a much better plane overall when we talk about German planes. The 109 just couldn't compete with the P51D, P47, late Spitfires and certainly not with the Sea Fury. The design of the 109 was just to old as an early pre-war bird. The high kill scores are only because of a few exceptional pilots like Hartman, Marseille, Galland and others.
