I've been flying GA and airliners for years in X-Plane & MSFS but this one has me stumped. I'm really struggling with this plane. Surely they can't have been this twitchy or hard to fly ? I'm having a hard time just taxying let alone take off and landing.
@@paulthurston2883they were. They required such skill in every phase of flight. Pilots of the spitfire have described the flight surfaces as so different from one another as to say. In order to fly the spitfire well, one has to perform an Irish gig on the rudders, arms wrestle the ailerons and gently caress the elevators. They were very twitchy because they were designed that way. They were highly manoeverable. Which made them twitchy and difficult to fly. In terms of ground handling they are very similar to a lot of heavy tail draggers like the p51. They can be difficult because of the high moment of inertia you have to overcome to start a turn
I'm now Spitfire pilot, but have heard from real world pilots that you've got to be really careful on the takeoff roll when you bring the tail up not to bring it too high. From what they were telling me you don't want to bring it right the way up as you might in a lot of tail draggers, but rather just get the tail wheel off the ground, but hold it low, so you've still got a nose up attitude. The reason for this is prop clearance, or rather lack of prop clearance. The spit has very little clearance between the bottom of the prop and the ground, and in a tail high position, when you factor in the travel on the suspension, you can theoretically catch the prop on the ground, hence staying tail low gives you just a little more clearance to reduce that risk. But anyways, great stuff, always love watching your videos!
@@cgaviator Yeah, I've flown the flyingiron spit a fair bit myself (the spit literally got me into aviation in the first place, so how could I not??) I'm so glad you enjoyed this aircraft. Beautifully flown (by this point I expect no less!). Yes please to more aeros and I'm looking forward to the nav ex. I'm also realising I'm missing out quite a bit on this glorious machine by lazily starting the flight on the runway, not to mention my half a glance at the manual ... which has resulted in flames, and I think bits of engine, exiting the exhaust once or twice! I love that it does that, and things like not starting if it's not primed right!
Yeah, it’s simple to operate but difficult to operate well. Even in this video I did plenty wrong! 😂 I’ve just watched the old Nought Feet video and it gave me an idea! 😁
Great video - it's always very interesting to hear a real life fast-jet pilot's views and opinions on such things. Can there be anything more stirring than flying this Spitfire over Chico Mick's Duxford ? It's like being at the last night of the Proms. The latest update's flight model caught me out, however, particularly with the engine torque. It led to a perfect two-point take off - left wheel, left wing tip. " This is where it's won or lost..." I know that feeling, particularly with the Spitfire. Lovely stuff.
I’ve had the pleasure of landing there a few times IRL in the past. Went there yesterday to see the Hurricane exhibit (7 airworthy) and the number of Spitfires in the hangars is amazing, many of them flyers.
Nice video was visiting Blenheim Palace in summer and rather fittingly, a Spit flew past, lovely sight and sound as always. Duxford was one of the best air shows I’ve been to, was around 20 years ago.
Sweet landing. A friend of mine flew for United. Always a kid at heart, he was giddy to tell me he had landed so softly that the squat switch was 'unaware.' His First asked: Are we down?'
Haha! The greaser! Gotta be careful with those incase they inhibit the spoilers/thrust reverse! In the Tornado and shove forward on the stick was sometimes required after touchdown 👍🏻
Hi Chris, great video. Lots of information and some fun flying thrown in for good measure. 👍my fav piston of all time. I remember in the Old days being blown away by the A2A Spitfire in FSX I loved the way you could see engine wear n tear in the model.😎 sparks if you landed at night n tarmac wheels up were brilliant. Anyway this model is top notch as well. Yes navigational videos would be much appreciated. One thing, I think I read that pilots were encouraged to close the door to the first latch and leave the canopy open to allow for a quick exit in the event of one of my normal take offs 🤣 Thanks for your content
That was a nice flight Chris. Glad you locked the primer. I forgot to lock it once on a Pa28 and during takeoff I thought the engine was gonna fall off the plane!
Good Video! Some remarks from my experience flying Harvards in the SAAF and the SAAF Museum aircraft. I normally started with the mixture in idle cutoff, once she fires, you throw it forward to "auto-rich" . The primer is moved too fast here, it is like a syringe, you have to draw fuel in, pause shortly to to allow it to fully draw, then smoothly push it forward to inject primer fuel into the cylinders. If you do this too fast, you will not be using full capacity of the primer. We had an electric boost pump but in the Harvard you had to keep the wobble pump going whilst priming...this was quite a co-ordination exercise, like patting your head and rubbing your tummy at the same time! There is a bit of resistance felt in pushing the primer plunger in. Sometimes makes a squeaky injecting sort of noise! Well done, pilots can forget the magg switches! I have seen it! The problem here is that she will run and fire up on the booster coil, but will cut immediately on releasing the starter and booster coil buttons, confusing the issue you forgot to turn the maggs on! The other thing is people often crack the throttle too far forward. I believe this causes a lot of start fuel mixture struggles and will cause a sudden burst of high RPM on starting...ouch! the SAAF Museum MkIX started very easily with the throttle only just off idle. Yes there is a little catch at the back of the stick which holds the brake leaver on which works well. The hand brake system is actually quite nice to use. No steerable tailwheel so rudder which is slightly effective even at taxi speed/surface wind, but differential braking is how most turns are done. Rudder trim was wound to to full right! Yes, 7-8 pounds of boost was more than enough....that is about half throttle! War emergency was 18 Lbs of boost! We would normally use around 8 LBS boost even for a display sequence. The take off was accurate. In the SAAF Museum Spit, you could see a sliver of the spinner above the cowling. This could be easily held on the horizon and at exactly 100 MPH she would smoothly fly off. Canopy closed and then as the speed built, you had to rapidly wind off all that rudder trim! Landing. On base leg, the has a large noticeable nose down pitch with those broad chord wings, when you lower flap. They should include this here. This is great, as it pitches down nicely into a safely steep approach path. The landing gear leaver should be taken out the down gate, held in the down position for 2 seconds or so, to energize the hydraulic system, then smoothly moved to the up position. Do not put it into the up gate, as this will cause the system to go to "idle" too early, leaving you with a gear leg hanging right in front of a radiator intake! Not good! The leaver will spring back into the idle or "up" gate of it's own accord, when the gear is fully up. Anyhow, yes a pretty good simulation with great graphics!
Echoing the call for more Spit content; not necessarily aeros though! I'd love to see a low level scoot around the mach loop and a medium level high speed recovery to somewhere in the East; Coningsby or Leeming? I would be really interested to learn more about how the engine controls work, and stuff like that. In a jet it's just "push lever forward, go faster" but it's more complicated with piston engines, and with variable pitch props!
Thanks! 😁 Took a little practice to get the landing and the aim point. It’s a pleasure to fly. I don’t find the DCS version as relaxing but I guess that’s the point! 😂

Nice Video 👍 Only "critics" I have: You want to start and land with the canopy open and the door not fully closed. Close the canopy as long as you are below 160 knots and open it again for landing when you are again below 160 kts.
You should have flown at duxford on multiplayer on west Europe yesterday in the evening it was amazing there’s was 4 two ship spitfire formations putting on displays all around around 10 spitfires all together flying about there was two P-40F war hawks 1 hawker hurricane 1 harrier 1 BF109 Messerschmitt and a few others!! Best fun I’ve had on multiplayers in a long while
You could teach monkeys to fly better than that! Taka taka taka! Took my father in law into Duxford a couple of times and an autistic lad who was allowed a trip to the tower. Friendly ATC at Duxford. Always shied away from the grass runway. Nice job as usual. Thank you.
Hey Chris, what was it that you had five years in? RUclips has transcribed it as "shorts to kindness" … somehow I don't think that's quite correct! 😂 Also, is it economics and/or slower speeds that makes the RAF train on these, or is there more to it? Interested in the logic. (Learning to fly fast jets in DCS from the start has been challenging enough, so I can imagine that it is more about slower speeds than the economics!) Fabulous video! Thanks!
Lol… Shorts Tucano. It replaced the Jet Provost because it was cheaper to run, better performance other than straight line speed. The Tucano now replaced by Texan II. Such a shame!
Awesome vid helping me land a lot and my take offs are hit and miss at mum 😬 noticed when using the tablet it says leave the fuel mix idle/cut off until just before magnetos am I missing something just wanna learn lol Keep up the good work 🙌🏻
I think with the mixture it may have been a difference in model/mark, or specific fuel system modification. Sometimes there are also sim limitations in terms of detail system modelling, not that I’m saying this was the case (can’t remember if I’m being honest). Saying that, I could just have got it wrong! 😂
@@cgaviator ahh ok I just noticed the click when pushed it all the way forward then back lol I also didn’t know there was a button under the trim save using the wobble pump so thanks man No just need to try buttering these landings 🙄 will send a few friends this way top stuff CG

Would be great if you did a video where you fly the suite of combat manoeuvres (split s, immelman, yo-yos etc) and commentary the proper parameters you need to have in mind while executing them.
Probably something I’d do in the DCS version so I have a bandit to track. That said, I did a Corsair video chasing an AI Corsair. I’ll see what I can do 👍🏻
@@cgaviator DCS is good. I'm actually learning the German warbirds so doing those would be even more helpful. What I find really useful is when you're commenting on speeds, altitudes and throttle control through the different phases of the manoeuvres.
I've enjoyed flying the Spit but the RPM lever can be difficult to get at behind the throttle. I also find the oil temp rises quickly just as I'm coming in to land, sometimes catastrophically. Good job I can just walk away!
True, if you’re clicking and not using a hardware axis. I never found temps to be an issue. Are you adhering to rpm and boost settings and limitations?
Read Paul Brickhills Reach for the Sky about Douglas Bader who lost both legs in a crash but went on to lead squadrons and fly Spitfires through early WWll before crashing in France and giving the Germans a hard time in captivity.. a must read if you are into Spitfires and real life hero’s ……
Does anyone know how you unlock the primer on the Xbox version? I am obviously asking for my 8 year old son, as it would be ridiculous that a 50 year old airline Pilot would be spending his spare time playing on a flight simulator! 😂😂 Great video as always Chris 👍
Love your videos, you should try to fly the spitty on DCS I like MSFS a lot but if you compare even in a short flight MSFS seems quite bad when It comes to the flight model, I am no expert but specially prop engines aircraft seems a bit on the arcade side.
Actually the dynamics are fairly decent with the MSFS version. There’s not quite enough inertia but it does actually spin unlike a lot of the others. I’ve tried the DCS version but it doesn’t look as nice in cockpit and you can’t fly it anywhere in the world. If only DCS and MSFS combined! 😅
So they changed the flight model then because if not the DCS model and even the IL-2 GB were much closer to reality because when they released this, you could take off with almost no right rudder when the real thing had the rudder trim fully to the right and almost full right rudder to take off. Great starting sound though.
@@cgaviator modified to right rudder but I have a doubt now, haven't played in a while. A few months, and last time I did I played a few planes that have the torque spinning opposite, like the typhoon with the sabre engine and the griffon spitfires and now I can't remember which one needs left or right. 😅But both need full rudder trim on TO plus almost full rudder opposite the torque to go straight.
@@cgaviatorlooked it up to feel better. 😅It's right for Merlin engines like on the hurricane, p-51,most spitfires, and left for the typhoon and late war griffon engine spitfires.😁 I feel better!
@@cgaviatorCorsair also had a hell of a torque. Pilots who found themselves too low and slow when landing on carriers and tried to correct by applying a lot of power suddenly often flipped the aircraft completely and fell to their death behind the ship a few meters from it!
Great Video. Have to ask, you said you have 5 years experience in the Short Tucano and you love aerobatics. what is, or do you have a connection with the Red Arrows/RAF? Many thanks.
Very nice landing sir. I've been flying the DCS Spitfire Mk IXc and wonder about the startup procedure, in particular, keeping the mixture in idle cutoff position until the Merlin 66 lights, then moving it to the run position. I noticed that you moved the mixture to run during your prestart sweep and kept it there. Do you know which is correct? -cheers
I was following the developer checklist and would have to check the original manual to confirm which. There were so many variants and maybe even procedures/techniques that just do what works! 😂 If I think I’ve overprimed it then while it’s trying to catch I’ll place mixture to cutoff til it starts.
@@cgaviator I just read a comment in the official MSFS forum that it is a limitation of the sim and that the engine won't light without mixture set in the full position. It makes sense that FI would have their checklist that way.
@@DanBlake3rd interesting! Though I’m sure that when it was flooded that I managed to start it but turning the engine with mixture off and then hitting mixture rich when it started to splitter into life. Perhaps it was coincidence. Thanks for the info 👍🏻
Try holding stick back to keep tail wheel firmly on the ground initially. Make sure rudder trim is appropriate. Check the wind, it will want to weather cock into it. Try a little aileron into wind perhaps. Otherwise just look down the runway and be quick but smooth with the rudder 👍🏻
Another great video. I must admit - I've been intending to purchase this Spitfire for a long time, but other payware aircraft keep getting released and I get them instead! I really will have to buy it! On a side note - what cloud settings did you use - they just looked really realistic!?

@@rymdskrotet easiest to control would be their P38 Lightning. Tricycle undercarriage and multi engine makes it easy to handle on ground and in air while still being high performance for a warbird.

Only "critics" I have:
You want to start and land with the canopy open and the door not fully closed.
Close the canopy as long as you are below 160 knots and open it again for landing when you are again below 160 kts.
Interesting, I picked up on that in parts but didn’t have anything definitive. Is that for bailing out options?
@@cgaviator Exactly, in case of an emergency you can bail out much faster.
Great video, thanks - but now please do it in DCS :) How do they compare?
I did jump into the DCS version. Maybe a good video to do next.
i once flew on a tiger at duxford and it really blew my mind. i wish i had the cash to learn
Didn’t know 🐅 could fly! 😅 Sometimes I think the flight sim hobby can be as expensive as learning to fly over again!
Nice landing!
Thanks! 😁
One aircraft I have not worked on! Closest I got was the DH Mosquito which was based at Hawarden. Awesome video
Hawarden in Wales? Flown approaches to there a few times. And the mosquito in DCS is very nice!
@@cgaviator yes good old EGNR. Where I did flight training in the venerable Tomahawk.
I dunno about that gforce groan - Ive done 5gs in a cessna 152 and I dont recall hearing the airframe make any noises under g-load.
This one’s wooden (I think?) so maybe!
Best fun I’ve had on multiplayers in a long while
Oh damn, that would have been something!
Wonderful! Thanks for that.
You could teach monkeys to fly better than that! Taka taka taka! Took my father in law into Duxford a couple of times and an autistic lad who was allowed a trip to the tower. Friendly ATC at Duxford. Always shied away from the grass runway. Nice job as usual. Thank you.
Lol, monkeys are the future! 😂
More! More! More! Now I have another aeroplane to buy. Damn it!
Sorry! 😂 It’s a good one though.
Awesome video as purchased this recently
Perfect timing then! 😁
I might have to get this for VR, and to exercise my new MFG Crosswinds!!
Oh congrats, I use MFGs too! Love them
Love your videos
Thanks for saying, makes it all worth while! 😁
Nice one mate.
Thanks 👍🏻
Hey Chris, what was it that you had five years in? RUclips has transcribed it as "shorts to kindness" … somehow I don't think that's quite correct! 😂 Also, is it economics and/or slower speeds that makes the RAF train on these, or is there more to it? Interested in the logic. (Learning to fly fast jets in DCS from the start has been challenging enough, so I can imagine that it is more about slower speeds than the economics!)
Fabulous video! Thanks!
Lol… Shorts Tucano. It replaced the Jet Provost because it was cheaper to run, better performance other than straight line speed. The Tucano now replaced by Texan II. Such a shame!
Awesome vid helping me land a lot and my take offs are hit and miss at mum 😬 noticed when using the tablet it says leave the fuel mix idle/cut off until just before magnetos am I missing something just wanna learn lol
Keep up the good work 🙌🏻
I think with the mixture it may have been a difference in model/mark, or specific fuel system modification. Sometimes there are also sim limitations in terms of detail system modelling, not that I’m saying this was the case (can’t remember if I’m being honest). Saying that, I could just have got it wrong! 😂
@@cgaviator ahh ok I just noticed the click when pushed it all the way forward then back lol I also didn’t know there was a button under the trim save using the wobble pump so thanks man
No just need to try buttering these landings 🙄 will send a few friends this way top stuff CG
@@tsw11385 thanks, much appreciated! Good luck with the landings. 👍🏻
@@cgaviator haha so last night my take offs are 90% and landings and almost perfect 🙌🏻 wasn’t slowing down enough on the reciprocal so yeah thanks Chris 👍🏻
You should try IL-2 Sturmovik for a much better WW2 plane experience. Or perhaps DCS once the new Normandy 2 map releases.
I prefer the MSFS version over the DCS tbh, but I’ve never tried IL-2
Just noticed that the cannon covers are visible in the cockpit; however, external camera shows only MG ports..?
Good spot! Maybe a playback issue, perhaps I forgot to enable them for the replay! Have to say I didn’t notice lol!
Does anyone know how you unlock the primer on the Xbox version? I am obviously asking for my 8 year old son, as it would be ridiculous that a 50 year old airline Pilot would be spending his spare time playing on a flight simulator! 😂😂 Great video as always Chris 👍
Lol, sadly I don’t. Sold my Xbox a long time ago! It’s a mouse scroll on the PC. If ‘he’ knows what the equivalent is for Xbox!
That was a great landing. Most people i watch slam it down hard lol
thanks! gotta feel for it! 😃
Great video as always!!!
@cgaviator which throttle stick (a d pedals) are you using?
Hardware list at the link in description 👍🏻
Bellissimo 😉💪🏻
Thanks 🙏🏻
Nice vid...couldnt find the next though
I got distracted, I’ll get around to it eventually! 😅
@@cgaviator I'm with you there 🤣
So they changed the flight model then because if not the DCS model and even the IL-2 GB were much closer to reality because when they released this, you could take off with almost no right rudder when the real thing had the rudder trim fully to the right and almost full right rudder to take off. Great starting sound though.
True, probably made it easier so it was too difficult for the masses. The blackbird sims Corsair is much harder I find
I’ve flown with the red arrows (as a passenger), amazing experience!
@@cgaviator Oh wow, i bet it was!
Everytime I fly it it pulls to the right when taking off and when flying the wing tips to the right? Any reason
Appreciate it mate! The model reminds me of MK356 had the original unfortunate duty of doing crash guard for it at RAF Coningsby last week
@@cameroncove2237 sorry to hear, thanks for keeping it all safe 🙏🏻
Another great video. I must admit - I've been intending to purchase this Spitfire for a long time, but other payware aircraft keep getting released and I get them instead! I really will have to buy it!
On a side note - what cloud settings did you use - they just looked really realistic!?
Cloud software and preset in the description, it’s my go to because it looks so good! If you’re going to get it for PC, get it direct from developer or you’ll be waiting a long time for updates
Had a whiff of fume and a waft of prop wash when she burst into life.
The smell is a lot of the experience! Especially starting em up!
I just purchased this Spitfire but Where is the download I can't find it
Is that from the developer or from MSFS marketplace?
Lancaster next please 😉
Lol, as soon as it’s released!
Are you going to upload your cruise video?
I planned it, got distracted, and have not been able to make any videos lately. It will remain on the todo list
woooot
Wooot wooot!
Just reviewing your video after I've been causing chaos over Duxford.. ;)
Define ‘chaos!’ 😂
Rev engine go straight towards crowd (yes I have loaded airshow pack) could sense the crowd screaming as I managed to get airborne going over them. Hahah
Typical me getting a new aircraft and just smashing the throttle, get up in the sky and see what happens next 😅
You could do that on DCS and fight the Huns while at it.
Show me Duxford in DCS! 😅
Engine sound of this aircraft in MFS 2020 is a disgrace to Reginald Mitchell
play DCS homie! the spitfire in DCS is awesome! plus you actually get to dogfight with a really good damage model and just as much sim/if not more sim than MSFS
True, though the DCS model is in desperate need of a texture upgrade in cockpit.
Are you in vr?? and how to get graphics / How to use vr without horrendous lag. How to get people watching too?
This is TrackIR. Graphics are set to High not Ultra. There’s a VR flight simmer channel that may have your answers. You can upload videos to RUclips or stream it live to any number of platforms (Facebook, twitch etc). I use OBS Studios for recording but it can also stream. My PC specs are at a link in description. Hope that helps.
@@cgaviator Thanks also How do I install the mods?
@@Votingalloy-me8hi which mods?
@@cgaviator The ones you have link for free. SO not the graphic mods but others.
@@Votingalloy-me8hi ah, I understand. For PC only. Download from link (lots of flightsim .to). Extract the contents to your community folder. That should do it 👍🏻
Which Iron Bird to start with?
How to start and learn? Probably the T6 that o think is part of MSFS Reno pack but can be bought singularly.
@@cgaviator No sorry... Which Bird from ironsim i meant. Which gives most Bang for the Buck, but not being too hard to control
@@rymdskrotet easiest to control would be their P38 Lightning. Tricycle undercarriage and multi engine makes it easy to handle on ground and in air while still being high performance for a warbird.
@@cgaviator Do you have to have manual control over three engines then ? how complex simulated are the engines to run ok?
@@rymdskrotet just 2 engines. You can bind both throttles to a single axis/control. You can also start with the engines running if preferred but they are fairly detailed in the start sequence.
how do i set boost?
With throttle 👍🏻
@@cgaviator thank you
I wonder if flying irons would ever do a rolls Royce griffon variant?
I don’t think it would make business sense to do, but who knows.

Have you tried the DCS Spitfire?
Yes, I actually prefer the MSFS one for the most part 👍🏻
My wallet hates watching your videos 😂
Lol, sorry 😂 But it’s worth it! Don’t buy it from marketplace if you can help it
I never understood why flight sims dont include the actual pilot in the cockpit.. Doesnt matter how good a sim it is, it just feels wrong to me that you cant see hands and feet, it just feels hollow or disconnected..
True, and some developers have started enabling that 👍🏻
I could watch you doing aerobatics in the spit all day long..................................
I’m gonna have to, yup, a aero video! 😁
Closest you gonna get is DCS. MSFS can't come even close with it's physics
I dunno, not in the case of the MSFS Spit. They’ve actually done a really good job of it. All opinion of course. But the MSFS one certainly looks better. The DCS one needs an update.
@@cgaviatorCertainly looks better? Have you even seen DCS Spitfire?
