It''s nothing short of miraculous how fast aviation progressed back in those days. That was not 20 years after the WW1 planes that basically flew on lawnmower motors and were made out of cloth.
From what I remember (if, indeed I am remembering correctly), the German pilot got a little lost after escorting a raid over Manchester or Liverpool, headed out over the Irish Sea for a while and landed at an RAF base in Wales rather than his intended destination in France. He did the allies a great service that day. No, he wasn't flying a Curtis Hawk in Luftwaffe colours!
A great review, I was lucky to fly with Dick Forbes at a South African gliding club in the 80’s, he was one of 4 RAF pilots that were selected to form No.1426 (EAC) Flight responsible for the testing and evaluation of enemy aircraft on 21/11/41 and they were based at RAF Collyweston. Eventually they had 7 Me109’s, 4 FW190’s, 5 Junkers 88’s as well as an Me110 & 410, Heinkel 111, Henschel 129 and Fiat CR42. It was their job to travel around the country giving displays to other RAF squadrons and advice on how best to engage the enemy. Their first captured FW190 was delivered unserviceable and had to wait for a cylinder block to be acquired from a downed aircraft in the Middle East before Dick could test fly it on 24/10/43 whilst still in Luftwaffe markings and preferred it to the Me109. Karl-Heinz Hirsch flew at our sister club 30km away, he learnt to fly the Me109F with the Luftwaffe. As part of his training he spent time at Rechlin where he test flew captured allied aircraft such as the Spitfire IX and Mustang. He fought on the Eastern front in Me109F’s before returning to Germany to finish off the war flying the Me262. It was a real privilege to know two WW2 fighter pilots who both test flew the other side’s captured fighter aircraft.
Hi Rob.... the German translation to youre words is.... " the dog is on the television." 😂 . anyway.... great video as always and greetings from Germany.👋
Brilliant video! Its been a while since we've enjoyed such an in depth, enthusiastic video for an MSFS release! You and this channel at its absolute best! Really enjoyed the route you chose and the genuine passion and detail learning and flying the aircraft. I really liked the FI Me109 and although tricky to ground handle its superb. Seriously considering the FW190 with all its power, characteristics and mid 40's prowess. It is an engineering and technological masterpiece but difficult to set aside the loss of so many allied pilots and crews as a result of its creation. Its a difficult balance given so much loss on all sides.
Hiding the prop is invaluable in VR, especially if you're using things like motion smoothing/fps generation which can cause very weird artifacting and interaction of the prop with the envirornment.
FlyingIron Simulations does amazing work! Best looking rendition of the FW190-A8 I have seen yet both inside and outside the plane. Blows away the DCS one of which I hate flying and was just a waste of money for me.
Very good review. Thanks for that. The pronounciation of the "Der Hund ist auf dem Fernsehapperat was quite good. Translated it means something like "the dog on the TV" Sprengung means "you force an explosion". Anyway, thank you very much for the detailed review. I like the Wūrger or butcher bird. But I am more into the elegant and efficient English lady: the Spitfire❤
@@4secsharkmr352 thank you sir! Very interesting regarding the language and thanks for clarifying. I will be very sure never to press anything that has Sprengung written on or by it!

@@AlphaIndigo thank you my friend. Yes it’s really great fun. Nice to buy an addon and have no regrets! Thanks for explaining the prop hide feature. That rings a bell now.
Way better flying airplane then the spitfire. Its so much more powerful then the spitfire. I need to try 3 point landing though. I have until now only done front wheel landing with the spitfire and this one.
Given the visibility challenges of “straight ahead” taxiing, takeoff, and landing in taildraggers, I’ve always wondered why nobody added a compact periscope of some sort.
@@baomao7243 that is ringing a bell but I can’t remember which aircraft, i am sure I saw something recently but not sure if I just imagined it last time the runway was lost behind the nose of the taildragger I was strapped into!
@@Dreamsofwings I am thinking the Spirit of St. Louis may have had something like a periscope. (I seem to recall Lindbergh had pretty much ZERO fwd visibility otherwise, due to the plane being a flying gas can.)
…..the dog is on the TV….perfect German :-)😂 and FUG Sprengung means selfdestruct of radio equipment type FUG25 (this was a radio navigation system). So that it could not be captured by the enemy.😮
Hiding the prop helps people using certain VR headsets when trying to get reasonable frame rates. You get distortion/tearing when looking trough the prop which spoils the experience. At least that is my experience.
Hiding the prop is a feature I wish more planes had. Most prop animations devs do in MSFS are that classic strobing/flashing effect which is great if you're simulating a camera but terrible if you're trying to simulate the human eye. The boring truth is most props IRL appear as a slightly opaque disc with no real texture or movement. But that's not cinematic, is it? That being said, it doesn't appear overdone in the FW-190
@@Dreamsofwings Yes indeed. I personally use the VR friendly Multi Pass mod (even though I don't fly in VR) which covers a lot of planes and makes the props more realistic. Oh and great video. Thank you for the detailed explore of this bird.
I hope asobo has improved the external flypast sounds in FS 2024. Listening to other prop aircraft fly around in 2020 sounds like you're inside a pipe.
@@Dreamsofwings I'm with you on flying iron aircraft. The spitfire is absolutely tremendous, I like the 109 but she is a complicated girl. The hellcat is a chugging brute. The lightning, oh dear. I'd love to see some twin engined medium bombers, B25, Mosquito Me110 etc
Personally I find it more enjoyable to look at and fly than the 109. It is similar to the F6F in that it is a radial beast but more agile. It’s great that it has it’s own character.
@@Dreamsofwings is it about as hard to fly or operate as the 109? I feel like it’s about right in between the 109 and F6F in terms of difficult of flying and in terms of systems operations the easiest
@@K1NGM4S1V not really, if you are into learning to fly different aircraft types it’s actually quite worthwhile, in the same way that people go to airshows to see pilots flying these old warbirds. If you are just about combat sims, and I also enjoy those, then there are other options. Easy.
