@@punk2769 oh yeah i mean you're just splitting hairs. It's not at all more difficult if you can already do what he's doing - it's just two different styles
It's not exactly like that, but it's very accurate. He plays the bass notes using slaps, and he does a different pattern in the right hand, it sounds like a drum pattern.
Learn more hard riffs here ruclips.net/p/PLmHm98cftBDlUako_nwRYs5GSzAciC1j7 I based this tutorial on the way John plays it in the Neon Tutorial he did on Tiktok. In this version he doesn't slap the bass notes on the chords except the first chord. In the live in LA version from 2007 he does slap the bass notes quite clearly. So, theres more than one to play it to get it sounding good. Check out John's tiktok www.tiktok.com/@johnmayer/video/6935179575232187653?is_copy_url=1&is_from_webapp=v1
You are playing the riff yes but John himself said it’s not every note for itself , he demonstrates how to play it on his ig live , it’s not plucking each note individually, it’s rolling across all strings using the thumb as a percussion
I wish it had all been tabulated, DVD’s of concerts to study, cheap home recording and equipment. All I had to work from were song books that had 90% of the words of a song correct and the chord that vaguely matched produced on a piano.
Please don’t tell me I’m the only one who noticed how insane it is that he played the Csus2/Bb bass note with his thumb?? John Mayer is the only other person I’ve seen do that. Props to you man, I have to barre it.
"This may take a while" lol. Took me a year of playing nothing but this everyday. Proud to say I can play it like the LA live show and still have no bitches
Bruh, I wish you were around like ten years ago, a girl I had a massive crush on really likes this song and I want to impress her, sadly this was beyond my skill 😂 The girl was married to the other guy last year. Still has a massive crush on her, though.
Great tutorial, but I don't get why you'd arpeggio the chords with thumb and index only. Doesn't it just slow you down to not use as many fingers as notes you are arpeggioing? If anything you could arpeggio the chords with index and middle (+ ring and pinky if you need more fingers) so you always have the thumb in the perfect position for slapping.
John Mayer explains in his video this song only requires your thumb and index. Alsoo, there's a better flow and rhythm when using the index and thumb correctly.
John mayer explains how to play this from his mental archives of playing with great blues players. Your explaining the method he explicitly says not to use.
I learned how to play this and still have no bitches
haha, I liked that!
Slow dancing in a burning room is the bitch getting song
Same bro
I'm guessing calling them bitches isn't helping either
You have to look and sound like John Mayer
This is the first time this riff has sort of actually clicked for me I don’t know how to repay you but thank you, subbed!
That's great Tanner. I'm happy it helped!
Because it's the more natural way to play it, incorrect but easier to pick up
@@96Caleb96 it's not incorrect at all lol
@@senorpapasfritasconqueso yes it is. There is actually another slap at the beginning of each arpeggio wich is quite hard to get right.
@@punk2769 oh yeah i mean you're just splitting hairs. It's not at all more difficult if you can already do what he's doing - it's just two different styles
this is the simplest and the short video with high content for Neon i have ever seen....
thanks David!
You’ve still got the percussive part to learn my friend. He hits every downbeat, not every other one like you’re doing
It's not exactly like that, but it's very accurate. He plays the bass notes using slaps, and he does a different pattern in the right hand, it sounds like a drum pattern.
Yes. This video helps, but the percursive playing john performs make it 3 times trickier than just what is shown here
He does slap the bass note every time. I posted a short, and I think I got it.
Yeah the real bounce is different
this is the most simplest and helpful guitar lesson on Neon I've ever seen lol
No

Some videos on this song are over an hour. This is perfect. All we need!
You are playing the riff yes but John himself said it’s not every note for itself , he demonstrates how to play it on his ig live , it’s not plucking each note individually, it’s rolling across all strings using the thumb as a percussion
"it's a cave, you need to use different fingers" - also how I met your mother.
He said it ok not its a cave
I heard cave too
Definitely "it's a cave", listen again.
John made a video about it and said you shouldn't pick the notes one by one but instead strum percussively over them
The beginning gave me flash backs to the red wedding, I thought he was about to play the rains of castamere
Wish I had videos like this when I started playing 🤣🤣👏👏👏
Thanks Gus!!

this makes sense. which is funny cuz I got mad when the short first popped up cuz i’ve been struggling with neon the past few days
great thanks Landon, I'm happy it helped.
cool video i appreciate the charts and tab on screen thank u
Thanks Mike
Brooo, I can actually play it now! I’m not even joking, I can actually play it 😎😎. You’re a legend, dude.
Wow actually holding the chords like John Mayer does! That is crazy
John mayer explained that he actually does a percussive strum
Yeah the actual way to play it is much much harder than that, and way richer percussion wise
This is actually really helpful, thank you subbed !
I've never even heard this song until the other day and it's the best riff ever
“wanna learn how to play Neon.. the wrong way?”
?
🤓
Thanks this was kinda useful Ngl
Amazing teaching you rock, more more more. Keep teaching online thank you
thanks!
You were able to break this down better than any other tutorial fast af so good job
thanks very much!
Awesome lesson man❤
Thanks James
You’re missing the percussive note on the first beat.
earned a sub for your help sir
thanks!
And then spend a year trying to learn the right hand technique the way John does it 🤣
It's seirously so easy though. It's literally just a simpler version of flamenco.

I'm glad someone noticed! thanks Brandt
You gotta turn some of them into more of a percussive thumb slap that rings out the open c tho. It’s kinda scientific how and when he does it
Wow! Awesome! Keep it up!
Thanks Fred!
You explained it better than John did. But don’t expect me to still learn it. 😅
He did exactly what John told not to do.
Nope. Watch Mayer's short on how he plays it. The right hand isn't playing an arpeggio at all.
Great tutorial
Thanks!
Definitely one of my favorite lessons for neon! Great job.
This came up when I searched how to play neon
Wow.
Thats amazing
Cool man very cool. Appreciate you!
thanks Michael!
@@step-by-step-guitar welcome anytime man. Thank you.
Best lesson ever
Thanks Salai
Yo my bad habit of only ever using index and thumb for arpeggio gon come to good use
This song was so hard to play, i remember taking 6 hrs to get it perfect 😭
and sing on top of all of this
been practicing this for a few months. learning the live edition. it’s pretty easy to get but hard to get really good
Almost.
You missed slapping the low E (in this case C) string with your thumb. That would be step 8 but great video overall!
"This may take a while" lol. Took me a year of playing nothing but this everyday. Proud to say I can play it like the LA live show and still have no bitches
Very good tutorial but one thing to add is that John slaps the bass notes
This actually makes it seem doable
"Hey, wanna learn Neon?!"
No....
"....wanna watch me play it? "
You're godamn right I do
He did the thumb thing😳
I can't do the big finger base nor finger style, so I basically created my way to play it: 4 finger with pick
John mayer himself gives a much more accurate tutorial on his shorts page.
This is mind blowing. Not kidding. Easiest Neon lesson on the planet. I bet even JM learnt it this way.
thanks Wola!
Second last arpeggio is played slightly differently in the actually track but yeah that's the idea.
For anyone wanting to see how John play's the bass note live with his thumb, I posted a short.
Always start with the slap.
You're a legend.
🤘
thanks James!
The song that every girl asks me to play
It’s more like playing 8ths with your right hand, slapping on the bass notes.
Need to slap the bass string so it has that buzz to it.
Bruh, I wish you were around like ten years ago, a girl I had a massive crush on really likes this song and I want to impress her, sadly this was beyond my skill 😂
The girl was married to the other guy last year. Still has a massive crush on her, though.
Once all your hope and possibility are gone dry, then you can embrace the unlikely beauty in letting her go….
Well thank u dude i broke my guitar
Last step: learn to sing it while playing all of that. Even John says it’s difficult.
John himself says you don’t arpeggiate the chords. It’s a much more percussive right hand style.
Or go watch mayers demo on the song
Not how Mayer plays it but a good tutorial
The steps are easy until it starts resembling the song lol
What tuner do you use?
The one in Logic Pro I’m pretty sure
Awesome
thanks! Glad you liked it.
What’s the guitar brand ?
Great tutorial, but I don't get why you'd arpeggio the chords with thumb and index only.
Doesn't it just slow you down to not use as many fingers as notes you are arpeggioing?
If anything you could arpeggio the chords with index and middle (+ ring and pinky if you need more fingers) so you always have the thumb in the perfect position for slapping.

@@ricardokarepa6600 Okay, thanks
Wdym, this isn't how John plays it
You think you're going to teach Neon in a 1 minute video. That's cute
I mean he kinda did
Play it on standard tuning, it's easier, less movement.
Name app please😁
Not quite right. The thumb is supposed to do a percussive rhythm more than just a single tap but very close
What app is that
Why does nobody play the syncopation properly towards the end? It drives me nuts.
how about no?🥰
Except John mayer uses a hand technique not arpeggios. In fact he specifically states its not playing each note.
Sehr gut
The best tutorial so far
You’d probly be a lot better off learning the percussive pattern first but 🤷♂️
Where’s the thumb slap bro?? Thats the point where everyone else get stuck 😢
John mayer explains how to play this from his mental archives of playing with great blues players.
Your explaining the method he explicitly says not to use.
Nah those chords be sus 🤨
We all know it’s darn well impossible to learn this song in 48 seconds
if only it were that easy😢
i dont understand the tabs part pls help
You know what tuning the top string to C is a hell lot of a trouble 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Haha 😂
I mean it sounds ok but just not the same
It's not quite right. You have extra open strings when they're ghost notes.
