Why Did I Photograph in Such Ferocious Wind

- In this video I take my Nikon Z7 II with an f4 24-70 lens out on a landscape photography shoot. My wife had kicked me out of the house, so I had no plans of where to go or what to shoot. Unfortunately, the weather was not on my side with heavy rain and ferocious wind.

The editing of this one is cracking me up! 😆
JMO, but I consider this to be one of your most successful photography adventures in some time. You need to thank your wife for "kicking you out". I was surprised at the quality you were able to capture in the conditions you were in. Congratulations, Thomas. Well done.
Thanks, Clifton. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this one and I'll pass your compliments to my wife 🙂
I really like the stormy photos, it's so different from the every day weather that it looks surreal and untouchable.
Hats off to you for shooting all that B-roll in those conditions.
Mr. Heaton just never disappoints!
At some point I thought you would just fly away - never to be seen again.
The video itself is already a form of art
The "zig zag" turned out beautifully. Like a fine, classic painting. Seemed like you had a ton of fun shooting it :)
Thanks for sharing your ordeals, so we can live vicariously through you!😆
As the great @Simon Booth quoted in his recent video on the Orkneys: "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance with the rain. " So keep on dancing, Thomas!
That's commitment! Congrats Tom for enduring in such hard conditions! And thank your wife :)
A great set of images, especially the lone tree on the hillside. I am constantly impressed by your ability to produce such high quality photographs in the most unpromising and arduous conditions. It is an inspiration to get out and shoot when conditions are less than "perfect", no excuses.
I agree about the 'no excuses', because more often than not, there's at least something to shoot or at least experiment with.
Right from the first shot, I knew this was going to be "classic Heaton", and I was not disappointed! I do love your sense of humour, and you made a great success of the trip despite the conditions. I loved the early shot of the waterfall behind the lone tree - it's amazing how well you managed in the wind.
This is one of those times when I like more the composition in the video clips than the still images itself
I love your enthusiasm for photography, especially as the weather gets really crazy like that.
Thomas, how about your comparison between the F4.0 and the F2.8. I’m curious.
Good times in bad weather! Some of my favorite days out have been in conditions like this so I'm happy to see you out there enjoying it. That image with the green hillsides illuminated by the rays of sun is my favorite from the shoot, I love it!
Really enjoyable, thank you Ms. Heaton! I kept thinking you needed Gavin as a wind break, but that would be rude. The last image of the single tree is terrific. More please.
Hats off for persisting in that wind...it looked brutal! Some wonderful images captured and you did a stellar job filming and telling the story when it would have been incredibly difficult to do so...your videos are an inspiration!
Fantastic!
I love getting out there in wild weather for landscape and wildlife.
Sooo much fun.
This “in situ” photography is great - thanks for the highly motivating and entertaining video 🙏
Thanks for your video. Yes my lifestyle dictates when I can photograph. These are great shots you got in those difficult conditions.
Bloody awesome. Love those kinds of lighting conditions!
that first tree shot alone made the whole exercise worthwhile i reckon. And the final few at the end were superb, minis the close up of the grass and water.
What a wild day! I particularly liked the "intentional subject movement " of the bare tree and the last image of the lone tree on the ridge.
Got your signed calendar and the photo. Just need to mount it! Super excited!
Well done Thomas. Thanks for showing so well the use of 100-400 off tripod. Really exciting, challenging and ultimately satisfying photography.
These would be great images in the best of conditions. Considering how challenging it was makes them better than great...greatamundous!!!
I agree, that one with the little tree on the edge and the light in the valley behind is fantastic! Well done for really braving the elements in this one and doing so without incident. Driving the van in those conditions can’t be easy, apart from anything else.
A hilarious adventure, and bravo for getting anything out of it!
I love photographing in impossible conditions. It's the challenge that pays off with the unexpected. Love your photos.
You are the greatest landscape photographer I have I recommend your videos to the biginners to learn composition.its amazing ❤️🔥
The Grass shot at 14:46 looks like a painting. beautiful images.
I thought i'd hate that first image but in fact it's pretty awesome, if you compared that to a real macro shot of a major blood vessel it's almost identical.
Even with 60 mph winds you manage to get some terrific photos!
I love the added element of the wild wind! That valley looked beautiful.
The lesson from this video really hits home for me. So often, I find myself hardly ever getting to choose when I can go out for a shoot. There are so many days with perfect conditions, but I'm busy at work. And when I CAN shoot, the conditions are terrible. So I guess what I'm taking away from this video is that a shoot is meant to convey the feeling of being at the location, including whatever conditions might be present. There should always be a way to use the current conditions to your advantage. Strong winds and dark, stormy conditions can make quite powerful images, as you've demonstrated. By the way, the image with the grass next to the water was absolutely genius! The shape of the grass and the ripples on the water make it very obvious that it was windy.
I should be kicked out more often. Loved the waterfall image.
That was a fun video to watch! I love the first hand-held image with the tree and waterfall in the background. Thanks!
Bravo for persevering for your art 🍻 I have a shot similar to your ridgeline tree, but mine was in calm weather on a Welsh mountain while waiting for jets to appear. Jets make a landscape photo 1000x better 😁
Respect for pulling off such a great video in those conditions!
Surprisingly good images considering the conditions. Nice work, Thomas!
Well magnificent shots
I think it was worth it shooting in this kind of wild weather
Please do more videos like this
Just go out even if there is a storm and show us the beauty of Mother Nature when it’s wild like this
And I have to say that Nikon is such a beautiful brand
You inspired me to go out
And shoot even though I do have a none weather sealed Nikon
The D70S with old 70-300 mm
Give it a try these old Nikon cameras are wonderful
The CCD sensor has its own magical vibe …
Some fantastic imagery there Thomas. The weather looked intense so fair play for keeping the video camera upright :D
Holy dooley that wind!! That was nuts. The images though . . . . crikey. You really can get some stunners even with shocking weather.
Awesome video. Weather sucked, but you went out anyway and kicked ass. Loved it.
Hi Thomas, you put a lot of honest and cool outdoor photography videos out. Keep on shooting this footage. I always like to watch them. Real recreation for me even when commuting ;-).
Next time your wife decides to kick you out of the house for the night, maybe ask her to check the weather forecast first ;-), but I do love the images especially the ones with the long lens shot in the end. The small patches of sunlight put emphasis on the drama of the conditions! I guess we will have to wait for a calmer video to get your thoughts on the f4 lens 🙂
Let there be light! Yes, the last image is very nice given the conditions you endured.
Wonderful work as always. The image at 14:47, of the windswept grass against the water, is *striking*. It feels almost... 'painterly' is the obvious word, but it more reminds me of the *pictorialists*, of hand-brushing emulsion onto a canvas with fat, ragged brushstrokes. A bit abstracted, a bit separated from the world, yet undeniably *real*. It might not be the traditional one to gravitate towards, but something about it just grabbed me.
Love the light of 14:39 and your textbook minimalism at 14:46. It's incredible how you still managed to capture such gorgeous images while trying not to get blown away by such ferocious wind. It's astonishing your recording camera was still able to stand still the whole time ;D
Your adventure is always inspiring for most of us!!
Yes, please, I'd like a glass of that lemonade you've just made! Cliched pun aside, your preparedness, experience, and attitude are major factors in your favor, and these are some very successful images. Congratulations, and as usual, thanks!
I love the first photo and that style of photography. Well executed.
Beautiful images, entertaining as always😃🇳🇿
There absolutely stunning honestly I wish I had an eye for it one day maybe but honestly keep up the good work 😊
Love the last one Thomas, little tree on the mountain! Crazy day for sure!
Exciting video! looked like a fun trip! As always, great pictures!
Remarkable images given the conditions. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Great video images look brilliant to Thomas
The 2nd shot with the 2 trees and the waterfall in the background was the best for me. I can see a better difference between your digital work and film photography, digital is far more pleasing to view. You're more creative with digital. Bet it was nice having a hot coffee after that windy walking?
This shows how good of a photographer you are an why we love to watch your videos! One of your best efforts ever and the results are very nice. 👍
I love your videos because not only do I learn valuable photography tips but I feel like I just get to hang with you while you are on your adventures!! Totally awesome!!!
Thanks. Life is an adventure. Photography is a bonus.
You've truly outdone yourself Thomas! Most photographers (on RUclips) wouldn't show a day like this, but it's so refreshing to see you shooting in conditions that are subpar to say the least.
You did a great job with the audio in all that wind 👍
Thomas, I loved every one those images the light got my imagination working over time.
Second image was spectacular.
Things you do for love eh! I know the feeling when my wife tells me she is having girlfriends over and I need to make myself scarce. Wonderful images under very difficult conditions Thomas, you inspire me to try harder.
Winter summer spring and fall -your out their entertaining for all of us ,lone tree one at the end was the best , hope the wife had some sympathy after watching that
I thought Iceland is windy… 😂 oh man. Beautiful images, beautiful land!
It is such a joy to watch life unfold around you and yield to some incredible images. Just BEAUTIFUL. Great job as always.
Some nice photos in the video. Watching other photographers like you gets me thinking about how to do my own photography.
What a start to a video! lol!
Excellent effort! Your final images were amazing! What an adventure!
Tom, your tenacity is admirable though some might question your sanity.
Wow! On a day that did not look promising at all for landscape photography you hit it out of the park. I especially loved the tiny tree photo. Just awesome.
Thanks, Linda. I would like to return to that tree and scout it out a little more. Snow would be nice for that subject.
The images are jaw dropping. I think you’ve outdone yourself in the most difficult conditions. 🙂
these are some WILD images, but serieus, loved the video, love the pictures! amazing work again. sometimes it needs to be wild to shoot wild stuff!
Flipping heck is my new favorite expression hahaha, yet again amazing photos, I am glad your wife kicked you out for the day :0)
That was entertaining indeed! IT proves that TH is an amazing photographer, being able to capture some lovely images in those horrific conditions. Well worth being pushed out of the house LOL!
Beautiful images. Inspiring dedication to the craft.
Given the conditions you looked like you were having so much fun..........Thanks for an enjoyable video👌
Really enjoyed this video and love the concept behind it. Amazing that you got the images you did.
What a hoot! Loved it
Beautiful photos. Thanks for showing the process .
Love watching your storytelling Thomas. ❤❤❤❤❤
Absolutely loved this adventure. Outstanding images. Well worth battling with the ferocious elements.
those are some gnarly conditions! beautiful
Exciting video. Beautiful images. Very cool.
You are so dedicated and inspiring.
I was blown away by your images Tom……………just like you nearly were 🌬
I love shooting in weather like this, always a challenge but so enjoyable and it can lead to some stunning images! Really like the image you mentioned with the tree Tom, and the one at 14:38 👍 S
Excellent images and story, loved the wind
Fabulous images!
Fantastic! Great challenge!
I like it. Glad you were able to get some shots. I really enjoy that reel at the end with the little spots of light.
Beautiful images Thomas, enjoyed this one
Beautiful images, I too like the shot of the lone tree, but all of them give me new ideas.
Fantastic. All the best. 👍📷😎
I love being out in windy weather but shooting in it is another matter. As to the f4 lens, I'm a firm fan of the Olympus f4 Pro series. They are cheaper, smaller and lighter than the f2.8 trio and if the light is so bad I need more than f4 then 1 extra stop won't help, I'll need to dig out my f1.4 primes! I loved the shot of the zig-zag wall BTW.
