JMO, but I consider this to be one of your most successful photography adventures in some time. You need to thank your wife for "kicking you out". I was surprised at the quality you were able to capture in the conditions you were in. Congratulations, Thomas. Well done.
As the great @Simon Booth quoted in his recent video on the Orkneys: "Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it is about learning to dance with the rain. " So keep on dancing, Thomas!
Tom, kudos to you for always making the best of challenging weather conditions. Your images offer enough inspiration for anyone to get out and enjoy landscape photography. Love your videos!
Things you do for love eh! I know the feeling when my wife tells me she is having girlfriends over and I need to make myself scarce. Wonderful images under very difficult conditions Thomas, you inspire me to try harder.
Good times in bad weather! Some of my favorite days out have been in conditions like this so I'm happy to see you out there enjoying it. That image with the green hillsides illuminated by the rays of sun is my favorite from the shoot, I love it!
Next time your wife decides to kick you out of the house for the night, maybe ask her to check the weather forecast first ;-), but I do love the images especially the ones with the long lens shot in the end. The small patches of sunlight put emphasis on the drama of the conditions! I guess we will have to wait for a calmer video to get your thoughts on the f4 lens 🙂
Weather You took My suggestion or why ever THE GREY BACKGROUND BEHIND YOUR PHOTOS IS GREAT and make Your photos even more of a stand out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
I agree, that one with the little tree on the edge and the light in the valley behind is fantastic! Well done for really braving the elements in this one and doing so without incident. Driving the van in those conditions can’t be easy, apart from anything else.
The lesson from this video really hits home for me. So often, I find myself hardly ever getting to choose when I can go out for a shoot. There are so many days with perfect conditions, but I'm busy at work. And when I CAN shoot, the conditions are terrible. So I guess what I'm taking away from this video is that a shoot is meant to convey the feeling of being at the location, including whatever conditions might be present. There should always be a way to use the current conditions to your advantage. Strong winds and dark, stormy conditions can make quite powerful images, as you've demonstrated. By the way, the image with the grass next to the water was absolutely genius! The shape of the grass and the ripples on the water make it very obvious that it was windy.
The 2nd shot with the 2 trees and the waterfall in the background was the best for me. I can see a better difference between your digital work and film photography, digital is far more pleasing to view. You're more creative with digital. Bet it was nice having a hot coffee after that windy walking?
Yes, please, I'd like a glass of that lemonade you've just made! Cliched pun aside, your preparedness, experience, and attitude are major factors in your favor, and these are some very successful images. Congratulations, and as usual, thanks!
Winter summer spring and fall -your out their entertaining for all of us ,lone tree one at the end was the best , hope the wife had some sympathy after watching that
A great set of images, especially the lone tree on the hillside. I am constantly impressed by your ability to produce such high quality photographs in the most unpromising and arduous conditions. It is an inspiration to get out and shoot when conditions are less than "perfect", no excuses.
that first tree shot alone made the whole exercise worthwhile i reckon. And the final few at the end were superb, minis the close up of the grass and water.
Hi Thomas, you put a lot of honest and cool outdoor photography videos out. Keep on shooting this footage. I always like to watch them. Real recreation for me even when commuting ;-).
Really enjoyable, thank you Ms. Heaton! I kept thinking you needed Gavin as a wind break, but that would be rude. The last image of the single tree is terrific. More please.
Enjoyed this Thomas. I was on Harris a couple of weeks ago with 60mph plus winds. Scary when you have to remember which way round to park the van so as not to lose a door… which someone did the year before at Talla na Mara.
Right from the first shot, I knew this was going to be "classic Heaton", and I was not disappointed! I do love your sense of humour, and you made a great success of the trip despite the conditions. I loved the early shot of the waterfall behind the lone tree - it's amazing how well you managed in the wind.
Hats off for persisting in that wind...it looked brutal! Some wonderful images captured and you did a stellar job filming and telling the story when it would have been incredibly difficult to do so...your videos are an inspiration!
Love the light of 14:39 and your textbook minimalism at 14:46. It's incredible how you still managed to capture such gorgeous images while trying not to get blown away by such ferocious wind. It's astonishing your recording camera was still able to stand still the whole time ;D
I thought i'd hate that first image but in fact it's pretty awesome, if you compared that to a real macro shot of a major blood vessel it's almost identical.
Tom: Give the harsh conditions, I'd be interested to know what you were shooting those last images at? ISO, aperture, shutter speed? They are beautiful.
You've truly outdone yourself Thomas! Most photographers (on RUclips) wouldn't show a day like this, but it's so refreshing to see you shooting in conditions that are subpar to say the least.
Wonderful work as always. The image at 14:47, of the windswept grass against the water, is *striking*. It feels almost... 'painterly' is the obvious word, but it more reminds me of the *pictorialists*, of hand-brushing emulsion onto a canvas with fat, ragged brushstrokes. A bit abstracted, a bit separated from the world, yet undeniably *real*. It might not be the traditional one to gravitate towards, but something about it just grabbed me.
One of your most entertaining videos yet :) The weirdest thing....I was looking at your image at 12:25 of the zig zag stone wall thinking I would have framed it " a tiny, tiny bit to the right" so that the right hand trees weren't cut off. And within 5 seconds you said "are tiny, tiny patches of light". Freaky :)
As usual you did an outstanding job with epic scenery in epic weather. My only suggestion would be the usual one for me, look at your B-roll. there were really wild things going on with the tufts of grass. It would mean that you would have to get down on the ground, but you did that anyway. A 24-70mm lens would be ideal for shots of wind gusts hitting the grasses at low level. Nice, nice pictures of patches of light on the highlands!
I really like the stormy photos, it's so different from the every day weather that it looks surreal and untouchable.
The "zig zag" turned out beautifully. Like a fine, classic painting. Seemed like you had a ton of fun shooting it :)
Hats off to you for shooting all that B-roll in those conditions.
This “in situ” photography is great - thanks for the highly motivating and entertaining video 🙏
Respect for pulling off such a great video in those conditions!
Well magnificent shots

Mr. Heaton just never disappoints!
At some point I thought you would just fly away - never to be seen again.
JMO, but I consider this to be one of your most successful photography adventures in some time. You need to thank your wife for "kicking you out". I was surprised at the quality you were able to capture in the conditions you were in. Congratulations, Thomas. Well done.
Thanks, Clifton. I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed this one and I'll pass your compliments to my wife 🙂
Fantastic!
I love getting out there in wild weather for landscape and wildlife.
Sooo much fun.
I love your enthusiasm for photography, especially as the weather gets really crazy like that.
Holy dooley that wind!! That was nuts. The images though . . . . crikey. You really can get some stunners even with shocking weather.
Things you do for love eh! I know the feeling when my wife tells me she is having girlfriends over and I need to make myself scarce. Wonderful images under very difficult conditions Thomas, you inspire me to try harder.
Thanks. Life is an adventure. Photography is a bonus.
Good times in bad weather! Some of my favorite days out have been in conditions like this so I'm happy to see you out there enjoying it. That image with the green hillsides illuminated by the rays of sun is my favorite from the shoot, I love it!
Flipping heck is my new favorite expression hahaha, yet again amazing photos, I am glad your wife kicked you out for the day :0)
A fantastic video content as always, Thomas. Thanks a lot for sharing it. Cheers!
The Grass shot at 14:46 looks like a painting. beautiful images.
Next time your wife decides to kick you out of the house for the night, maybe ask her to check the weather forecast first ;-), but I do love the images especially the ones with the long lens shot in the end. Please make a video with your best camping cooking tipps and recipes :) It always looks delicious!
Thanks for your video. Yes my lifestyle dictates when I can photograph. These are great shots you got in those difficult conditions.
Tom, your tenacity is admirable though some might question your sanity.
Weather You took My suggestion or why ever THE GREY BACKGROUND BEHIND YOUR PHOTOS IS GREAT and make Your photos even more of a stand out !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :) :)
Love the last one Thomas, little tree on the mountain! Crazy day for sure!
The editing of this one is cracking me up! 😆
Your adventure is always inspiring for most of us!!
Second image was spectacular.
Beautiful images Thomas, enjoyed this one
The video itself is already a form of art

Exciting video. Beautiful images. Very cool.
Bloody awesome. Love those kinds of lighting conditions!
Beautiful images, I too like the shot of the lone tree, but all of them give me new ideas.

Oh Thomas, your videos are addictive.
Beautiful images. Inspiring dedication to the craft.
Tom, great images for such a wild time. Bravo! She should kick you out more often! ; )

Thomas, how about your comparison between the F4.0 and the F2.8. I’m curious.
Got your signed calendar and the photo. Just need to mount it! Super excited!
Hilarious begining followed by fantastic and beautiful photography. Awesome❤️
A great set of images, especially the lone tree on the hillside. I am constantly impressed by your ability to produce such high quality photographs in the most unpromising and arduous conditions. It is an inspiration to get out and shoot when conditions are less than "perfect", no excuses.
I agree about the 'no excuses', because more often than not, there's at least something to shoot or at least experiment with.
A hilarious adventure, and bravo for getting anything out of it!
Given the conditions you looked like you were having so much fun..........Thanks for an enjoyable video👌
that first tree shot alone made the whole exercise worthwhile i reckon. And the final few at the end were superb, minis the close up of the grass and water.
Hi Thomas, you put a lot of honest and cool outdoor photography videos out. Keep on shooting this footage. I always like to watch them. Real recreation for me even when commuting ;-).
I like it. Glad you were able to get some shots. I really enjoy that reel at the end with the little spots of light.
You are the greatest landscape photographer I have I recommend your videos to the biginners to learn composition.its amazing ❤️🔥
You are so dedicated and inspiring.
Enough to inspire anyone to get out there.
That. Was awesome Tom, a few really nice shots, love the one with the lone tree and the hills lit behind, Merry Christmas.
Really enjoyable, thank you Ms. Heaton! I kept thinking you needed Gavin as a wind break, but that would be rude. The last image of the single tree is terrific. More please.
I was blown away by your images Tom……………just like you nearly were 🌬
That's commitment! Congrats Tom for enduring in such hard conditions! And thank your wife :)
Great video images look brilliant to Thomas
Remarkable images given the conditions. Well done and thanks for sharing.
Enjoyed this Thomas. I was on Harris a couple of weeks ago with 60mph plus winds. Scary when you have to remember which way round to park the van so as not to lose a door… which someone did the year before at Talla na Mara.
Some nice photos in the video. Watching other photographers like you gets me thinking about how to do my own photography.
What a hoot! Loved it
Great video Thomas. Perhaps could be called… “When life gives you lemons…” . Thanks!
I love photographing in impossible conditions. It's the challenge that pays off with the unexpected. Love your photos.
Excellent images and story, loved the wind
What a wild day! I particularly liked the "intentional subject movement " of the bare tree and the last image of the lone tree on the ridge.
Right from the first shot, I knew this was going to be "classic Heaton", and I was not disappointed! I do love your sense of humour, and you made a great success of the trip despite the conditions. I loved the early shot of the waterfall behind the lone tree - it's amazing how well you managed in the wind.

Great Job! Inspires me that the next hurricane, I should see if I can (safely) go out and see what I can capture LOL
Fantastic. All the best. 👍📷😎
Exciting video! looked like a fun trip! As always, great pictures!
This is one of those times when I like more the composition in the video clips than the still images itself
Great images but I got to say I love taking pictures but I don’t think I would have gone out with my camera keep making your videos 👍🏻
GOODSTUFF Tom, You are a REAL Trooper!!
Thanks for sharing your ordeals, so we can live vicariously through you!😆
Love the light of 14:39 and your textbook minimalism at 14:46.
Let there be light! Yes, the last image is very nice given the conditions you endured.
Tom: Give the harsh conditions, I'd be interested to know what you were shooting those last images at? ISO, aperture, shutter speed? They are beautiful.
Bloody hell that looked mental! Lol nice blog buddy! Definitely liked the shot of the tree in the distance
You've truly outdone yourself Thomas! Most photographers (on RUclips) wouldn't show a day like this, but it's so refreshing to see you shooting in conditions that are subpar to say the least.
Well done Thomas. Thanks for showing so well the use of 100-400 off tripod. Really exciting, challenging and ultimately satisfying photography.
Some fantastic imagery there Thomas. The weather looked intense so fair play for keeping the video camera upright :D
Awesome video. Weather sucked, but you went out anyway and kicked ass. Loved it.
those are some gnarly conditions! beautiful
These would be great images in the best of conditions. Considering how challenging it was makes them better than great...greatamundous!!!
It is such a joy to watch life unfold around you and yield to some incredible images. Just BEAUTIFUL. Great job as always.
I love the added element of the wild wind! That valley looked beautiful.
This shows how good of a photographer you are an why we love to watch your videos! One of your best efforts ever and the results are very nice. 👍
Beautiful photos. Thanks for showing the process .
One of your most entertaining videos yet :) The weirdest thing....I was looking at your image at 12:25 of the zig zag stone wall thinking I would have framed it " a tiny, tiny bit to the right" so that the right hand trees weren't cut off. Well that was fun. Maybe not for you, but fun for the viewer. Really nice shots as well.
Fantastic! Great challenge!
That was a fun video to watch! I love the first hand-held image with the tree and waterfall in the background. Thanks!
Excellent effort! Your final images were amazing! What an adventure!
As usual you did an outstanding job with epic scenery in epic weather. My only suggestion would be the usual one for me, look at your B-roll. there were really wild things going on with the tufts of grass. Lol, that was fun, really liked the part were you showed what you were about to experience with the wind.
Beautiful images, entertaining as always😃🇳🇿
I am impressed by the microphone 😂being able to understand what you say with the howling wind.
