  • Today I am going to show you how and when to plant up your succulent cuttings. We took the cutting because my graptapetalum paraguogese "ghostie" was getting stretched out/Etiolated from lack of sun. I want to show you what to do with your cutting after it callouses/scabs over and how to plant it up and take care of them most of all for the best success! I hope this video helps you in the best way possible to fix, propagate and take care of any succulent you might be having issues with.

    We got some aloe that some one else transplanted. We have had them for about 6 months, and they haven’t grown roots. Well, at least one of them hasn’t, we found out when we moved it and it fell out of the pot. Weird thing is they still look green and healthy. Not sure what to do with them...

      Oh no😔 I can post a video on it for you if you would like🙄 The same thing happens to me time to time, due to all the moisture and rain here, mostly to the ones outside so I had to repot them and put them inside the lanai and house to avoid the issue from reaccuring. It's probably just because the roots are staying wet for too long or because most succulent varieties are dormant right now and it takes forever for them to grow when they are dormant in the winter season. My advice is to not water for right now and I will see what I can do for you with getting together some information on them, that I've had experience with myself. I have two different types and they are awesome to have, except for the fact they always like to get root rot.. lol. I hope to help you! If you pull them out and leave them in a empty pot without water or soil in it until tomorrow, I'll make sure to post a video on what I usually do, it's a lot easier to explain in a video and to show you lol This happens to my aloe walmsley inside quite offer. They just don't like much waterings! I ended up fixing it so I'll see what I can do for you! 😉

      Hey girlie. I just wanted you to know I haven't forgotten about you! My poor little frenchie is not feeling to good today, he has a double ear infection. I will be getting the video I promised, up by latest tomorrow afternoon! I apologize this is going to be delayed a day! You should be just fine until tomorrow. Have you inspected the bottom where the roots are supposed to be? Are they brown, if it has any at all? Has it been growing in a pot or the ground? Just so I know what to cover, I know you said the foilage is green and looks healthy right with little to no roots?

      Yes, it looks healthy, I didn’t not see any roots at all though. I have no idea how it can stay green without roots!

      Hannah, I started collecting plants at age eight. My mom had houseplants in every window and I wanted that too. I learned about overwatering with cacti. Yep, I killed a few. Everyone does. I'm 57 now and I still lose a plant once in a while. But every plant teaches us something new. Congratulations on your succulent pup! Don't you love new growth? Houseplants are a lifelong hobby. I'm glad I found your channel! You present succulent care and propagation in an easy to understand no nonsense way. I was given a Graptopetalum (not sure of the species) by a friend who got it from her mother. It was in an old pot and was fragmented, stretched out, in pieces and was just a general disaster. I'm learning how to propagate from channels like these. Once I have a two or three established (rooted) babies, I think I think I'm just giving them away. I have so much, I'm just making planters out of plastic water cups for so they can get rooted. Of course, I'm poking holes in the bottom so as to allow for proper drainage.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  2 года назад

      It gets a lot easier, it took me a few months, even up to a yr to get the full hang of what succulents like. The main thing they die from is overwaterng (which I did a whole lot in the beginning lol). The type of soil it's in is extremely important which I do things a little different than I used to (just because of our humid climate).. I use a soil mix that consists of 50% Succulent soil, 40% perlite and 10% pumice.. I feel killing succulents is apart of the learning process and I try to make it as easy as possible because I know how difficult it can be for non succulent growers. If you need anything just let me know. I'm always here to help whenever I can😉 It sounds like you have a whole bunch to share which is great just in case some don't make it😉 Graptopetalum varieties are super easy to grow by leaves and cuttings in my experience. They are very rewarding plants and don't require much waterings at all (depending on the variety of course). Have fun with it and I wish you the best of luck. Remember I'm here if you need anything 🌱

After properly drying out the clipping and placing it in a small pot you "don't water for an entire week!?! So you don't even sprinkle the plant with water during the initial week? Also, how much sun do you like to give the plants over the first several weeks? Thanks much for helping me better understand the process. :)

    Do you leave the bottom part of the cutting in the pot and remove leafs on the stem? I have a tip heavy succulent that's about 6-8 inches tall it had nice leaf coverage but it's now leaning at almost a 45 degree angle, if gets enough light a I turn it. The top of the plant will turn towards the light but it's still gangster leaning.

    hi! just found your video and it honestly helped a lot. My succulent is an echeveria elgans (im almost positive) and it's gotten pretty leggy and i had noticed some root rot when i went to repot it today. I decided it was time to take a cutting since quite a few of the leaves had already fallen off. so, im gonna let them callus, and then move them to soil. how long do succulents usually take to develop a healthy root system? and i need a little bit of guidance for propagating part of the stem. sorry this is a lot, but i hope someone can help! thank you!

      I'm so sorry to here about your succulent. It can take them anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks to recover, depending on how bad it is. As for the little stem you're trying to propagate, I would just plant it in dry soil and wait.. sometimes they will root and grow babies.

    Any videos of you watering your cuttings that don't have roots yet? That's the one thing I can't find online so I'm still pretty lost on exactly how much water I'm supposed to give at each stage.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад

      I dont water my cuttings until roots start to grow. You can tell roots are present, by giving your succulents a little tug. If you feel tension, it usually means they're starting to root. If it pulls right out, it hasn't rooted and you should wait a little longer to water. I start watering my succulent cuttings whenever roots start to grow, (which is usually one to 2 weeks after planting the cutting into dry soil)... When I do water, I only give enough to moisten the soil through. I don't start soaking my pots all the way through, until a week or so after roots start to grow, so they have time to get established. I always let the soil dry out inbetwen the waterings because succulent roots don't like to stay wet for a long time.. If the soil doesn't dry out within 4 or 5 days, you might have to use a better well draining soil mix. I like to add perlite and pumice to mine. Hope this helps! Lmk if you need anything😊

    I recently took a cutting from my mother's Jade succulent and let it dry for a couple of days. But I'm really impatient and want my succulents to grow as fast as possible, so I give them a little too much water, I think. I also misted the cutting every day for a bit and now I'm starting to worry I messed it up. So is it a problem if you mist the new cuttings before they have roots? And is there a way to make succulents grow faster? Thanks for the useful video!

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +3

      I'll be honest, I really don't like misting my succulents. I just wait till they start rooting into the soil, which usually takes about a week, to two weeks (depending on the succulent).. then I start watering, as I normally do the others. I soak the soil all the way through and let it stay dry in-between the waterings for a bit. A simple way to tell if your succulent needs water, once rooted, is to feel the bottom leaves and once they become wrinkly and deflated.. you know it's okay to water. Remember, newly propagating cuttings might lack some water, for the first few weeks until they root. Once you give a good thorough watering for the first time, they'll plump right back up and be good to go. If your scared, just stop watering until you think it's rooted. One way to tell, is by giving it a gentle tug and if it lifts right out of the soil, it's not rooted yet. If you feel tension, then it has roots. Hope this helps. Succulents become easier over time, once you get the hang of it... They usually recover from under-watering pretty well.. over watering is what really hurts them.

    • @katherinezuercher203
      @katherinezuercher203 Год назад +1

      I have many tiny new Jade plants that I grew from leaves. I sat them in a sunny window sill and left them there to grow new roots and plants which took about three weeks. Then I laid them atop Cactus soil mix, not in it and I mist them lightly every few days. They’re growing larger and their roots are already growing into the soil. I notice through this process the mother leafs have slightly wilted giving nutrients to the new plants. Patience is a virtue in growing new plants. It’s a slow process. 😌 🍃 🪴

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +1

      I do things a little bit different now. I hold back on watering until my propagated succulent leaves start showing signs of good baby growth and good root development. Then I water all the way through, like I do my regular established ones. This creates a better root system.

      Sometimes succulents take a little more than two weeks to root.. it all depends on the type of succulent it is and what's going on. Some bottom leaf death is normal while its rooting, but it shouldn't be loosing a lot.. do you have it in a succulent based soil?

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +1

      Bright indirect light usually means no direct sun... you can keep it by the window, but it doesn't have to be open (the screen should be fine on there). The plant can be by the window getting the light, just make sure the sunlight isn't hitting it directly. Plants that require bright, but indirect light, will do well in any room that has sufficient lighting.. Just make sure it's not sitting in the sun directly and you should be ok. I hope this helps.. let me know if you need anything else🐞🍃

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +1

      The glass can actually intensify the sunlight, so be careful with putting any plant too close to the window. A glass window isn't considered filtered light, it's considered direct sunlight if, there are no blinds or curtain up in front of it. Filtered light is kinda like.. when your standing under a tree. The sun is not directly on you, it's getting filtered through the leaves before it hits your skin. Same thing for a window. I have a light curtain up and that filters out most of the harmful UV rays before the sunlight hits my plants.

    I have a succulent that I got almost a year ago and it has grown a lot. I would water it about a tablespoon of water every day and was growing great. The leaves are about 5-6 inches long. I just went away and was gone for a week and while I was gone I put water in a container and put the pot in the container so it could have enough water. However I think I gave it too much water because when I came back it was leaning over a lot and the top half of the plant looks to have rotted/separated from the bottom half and roots. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to save it because it was doing so well.

      Your best bet is to remove the bottom leaves carefully to expose a bit of a stem if it doesn't have any and let in sit in dry potting soil , mixed with vermuculite or grits. Keep it in bright area, with no direct lights on it until it roots. Then gradually gives it morning light, a couple hrs more every week

      That's great advice KC gave... Did the rot move up to the stems at all? It sounds like it lost a lot of roots from sitting in all that water.. which is why it was bending over and separating itself. If it was me, I'd probably take them as cuttings.. remove some bottom leaves so roots can grow.. stick it in succulent soil and wait for roots to grow before watering. Roots can take anywhere from 2 to 3 weeks to grow (it all depends on the plant and how bad the rot was).. lmk if you need anything else 😊

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад

      @@teresaclark-phelps2925 ok, so that's a good thing it didn't spread all the way to the top because usually, its unsavable once the center of the plant rots away.. I would cut away any rot you see on the stem..(making the cut, just above the rot.. until you see healthy stem).. try not to take too much, if you can help it.. because it needs some room to heal over and for roots to grow.. (roots will grow out of where you plucked the leaves on the bottom of the stem.. you only need to pluck a few, not much). (Usually rotted succulents take a little longer to heal & recoup).. I plant them in dry soil, once the ends heal over.. (and it takes about a day or so).. I leave them alone for about 2 weeks after planting.. After 2 weeks, I pull on the succulent gently, If it pulls right out of the soil, you know it's not rooted yet and needs more time, before you start watering. If it has some tension, you know it's starting to root and you can start watering again.. I usually water lightly for the first time and water all the way through the next time it needs it.. Just to make sure it stays healthy.. you might start noticing some leaf death which is normal, it should start putting off new growth up top, to replace what it lost on the bottom. They are very resilient, so you probably have a good fighting chance. Lmk if you need anything else😊

    HELP! I have been doing terribly with succulents except for jades. I thought I'd try again, so I bought a little bucket with about four different types of succulents together from Home Depot. One of the echeverias looked unhappy, however. I looked up several times how to tell if it is over or underwatered... The bottom layer of leaves are flat and limp and wrinkly, but the roots and stem look healthy. From everything I read that seemed more like under than overwatered. So I pulled it out from the rest of the bunch, put it in a pot by itself, and gave it a little water. A day later, it doesn't seem better; instead another layer of leaves above the bottom layer are getting limp too. Was I wrong? Was it overwatered? What should I do next? I don't want it to die!

      It sounds like it might have a drainage problem, or it might have something to do with the type of soil it's in.

      You could try to use rooting hormone. Succulents propagate best during their active growing season. It usually takes twice as long during their dormancy period but it is possible with extra care and patience.

    My baby cutting died on me
    :( I didn't let the wound dry out, maybe that's why? I just stuck the cutting directly into the soil. The momma gave out another baby so I let this baby grow a little bigger than the other ones died on me. This time I will let the baby callus over before putting in soil. Wish me luck!

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +3

      As long as the soil is completely dry you should be fine to plant your cuttings directly in the soil. Sometimes the stem can get distorted, if left out on the counter without support.

      If it was me and the soil is completely dry, I would let it stay in the pot. I usually don't water my succulent cuttings for about a week to two weeks depending on the variety. I usually plant my succulent cuttings directly in dry soil. As long as there is no moisture in that soil. If there is, there is a chance it can rot it out.

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  3 года назад +3

      Watering a succulent cutting without roots can cause rot to set in. Succulents without roots, are unable to take up any water. I always plant my succulent cuttings in completely dry soil and I don't water until roots start to show, usually in about a week or two. If it was me, I would get another little container ready with dry soil and transfer them into that, this way, you don't have any problems with your cuttings rotting out. Hope that helps! Lmk if you need anything else😊

    • @StaceyHerewegrowagain
      @StaceyHerewegrowagain  4 года назад +3

      Absolutely. It's something you have to get used to... usually a regular plant gets propagated in moist soil or water (that's what we are used to). Succulents are so much different, but you get the hang of it after growing them for a while.

      Mine were too when I first started growing them. Now I hold off on the watering, until they show signs of root development & grow babies. That really helps with getting the succulent leaves established. Causing less rot in the end. After some practice, it will become easier. Try not to get discouraged and if your unsure about watering.. just hold off a few more days.. succulents do a lot better with underwatering than overwatering. And they really like to stay dry for a few days, to a few weeks, in-between the waterings, depending on how big it is. The smaller the succulent is, the more water they're going to need. The bigger the succulent and the more established they are, the less waterings they're going to need. (Just remember succulents that are actively growing, need more waterings than succulents that are dormant. Propagating is recommended when they're in their active growing season).

      It's a possibility you might have watered too much, although, some succulents loose their leaves when they're lacking water, like most sedum varieties. What type of soil is it planted in.. that could be the issue if your not using a fast draining mix like succulent and cactus soil.
