  • If the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was the most famous Luftwaffe fighter aircraft of the Second World War, then its direct bomber equivalent had to be the Heinkel He-111, an aircraft which can trace its origins back to the early 1930s and its development as a supposed fast civilian airliner, due to the restrictions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. Once the country was no longer concerned with the pretence of trying to plicate the other European powers, the Heinkel showed itself to be a "wolf in sheep's clothing" and thanks to its large, fully glazed "greenhouse" nose, would become one of the most famous aircraft of WWII. Possessing greater range than other Luftwaffe strike aircraft, the Heinkel He-111 would see heavy use during Operation Barbarossa and the air battles which raged over the Eastern Front from 1942 onwards, but not always in its primary strike role. Due to the rapidly deteriorating situation for the Germans, Heinkel He-111 bombers were also used for casualty evacuation and re-supply duties, where they would supplement the efforts of the lumbering Junkers Ju-52. This particular Heinkel has added rather effective whitewash blotches over its standard camouflage, something which would have looked rather effective against the frozen Russian tundra from above. Whilst attempting a low level bombing attack against targets in the Kaluga area, south of Moscow, this bomber was hit by accurate Soviet anti-aircraft fire and was forced to crash land, thankfully for the crew, safely behind German lines.
Seen here is the aircraft in diecast metal made by Corgi in 1:72nd scale. It's an extremely well-made diecast model with great detail.

I found mine online!!! Should be able to get on from somewhere, just shop around for price too. I just checked Amazon there is some on there, also a couple on Ebay. Your local online hobby shop may also have some? Its not an old release so should be able to score one!!! Good luck 🙂

The He111 is soooo iconic, and having it next to other 1/72 planes in the same scale is a super cool pleasure :)
For me is a dream, because of the high price of this model, but we definitely need more medium bombers on 1/72, I'm personally waiting for a Pe-2 Peshka.

Agreed, the silhouette when looking down unmistakable. I had relatives in the Luftwaffe hence with my collection maybe a little axis bias, haha. And your not kidding about money. I thought classic cars were expensive, so started selling those off and thought this would be a cheaper hobby. Boy was I wrong. Was the reason I started my RUclips channel to try and justify the expense to myself. I didn't even know how to upload a video 6 months ago, haha. Thanks for the support and kind words. Cheers

Oh definately would love to see a Pe-2. I have an Il-2 in Easy Model ready made plastic models. Very similar aircraft. I've been trying to get a Do17 but the prices have been really high, more than the Heinkel. 😢

I do not know why I like he111, I think that I like its wings, those wings have something special. I have two of this models, one in desert camouflage and a green one with torpedos. They used to be relatively cheap for being a corgi. The he111 was an obsolete plane when WW2 began in 1939 or 1940 and the Germans kept theirs he111 as a bombardier along the war. Why Germany did not develop more bombardiers, specially long range, along the war is a mystery. My guess is that Georing was very incompetent.

I agree. The Heinkel has a beautiful shape, I guess maybe originally it was designed to be passed off as an airliner. Goering was very incompetent, pretty sure he was on drugs. He was pretty self indulgent. I feel like diecast models are expensive for us here in Australia. I see them alot cheaper in other countries when checking the internet. I want to get the torpedo carrying one 🤣 just trying to find one priced well enough. I have another 2 to review. I actually bought the other 2 from a seller in the US as with cost of items and postage it was still cheaper than I could get one here. Haha crazy hey. Thanks again for taking the time to comment 😀

@@heavymetaldiecasthi, the he111 with desert camo is good, l like it. The green one with torpedos is 'ok' because it is too 'snappy', l do not know if this is the correct word, I mean the green one shows too much separation lines among the plane components. I find this defect in some corgi models.
