- 55 Gallon Worm Compost Bin- Look at the wormery
/ @plantobsessed
This bin was made from cutting a 55 gallon food grade barrel in half long ways and screwing the open ends together to make a 6 foot long bin.

The bin lives in the cellar of my 200-year-old house. In the winter the furnace dries it out, and in the wet season the moisture leaching through the bricks makes the basement very humid. The current set up was started near the first of the year 2021 after the wormpocolypse. A rat was in the basement and all the bins had to be moved to totes and buckets with lids on to protect them. When the rat was ended, I added 4 or more of the in-progress bins/ buckets with the compost mix of red, blue and European nightcrawlers in them to fill the big blue bin. I continued to add ground leaves and food. Currently the bin is undergoing a refresh. I am harvesting the castings as the top of the bin dries and adding new bedding and food. Keeping the moisture even in the bin is difficult in the wet summer. I flip or fluff the bin to keep the air in the bedding. Back to the wedge method starting now.

When are you going to count the worms in this bin? 🤣
Lol, maybe when I win the lottery. 🤣
As you know this is my favorite production bin on the platform. I don't do fiddly very well, so love the fact that it produces so much for relatively little effort.
Cheers Ann 🪱👍
I wish all my bins were so easy. Thanks for watching
I like the idea of using re-usable food storage bags versus the single-use ones 👍🏻
I am currently looking for some bigger ones. Good thing these 2quart come in big packs.
Until yesterday, I used predominantly leaves with maybe a handful of hand shredded cardboard but I just got a shredder so I plan on using more cardboard. I'll always use leaves as well though. I have 4 very large neem trees that love to drop leaves year round.
Nice, I wonder if the decomposing Neem leaves have the same quality as Neem oil?
Yay for the reusable baggies! I use them too for the same reasons as you, and they've held up well for a little over a year now. Blue looks great, as always. I always enjoy watching you work through the layers and witnessing the progression of breakdown from one end to the other. Makes me wish I had my own Blue!
It is not easy to find room for such a beast. Thank you for watching. 🪱😁
Love the worm ball excitement! Only got a tiny wormery but would love a big box/barrel version one day
It is great. If you can I highly recommend it.🪱👍🏼😊
Hi Ann, Happy St. Patty's Weekend ☘️ 💚 ☘️
I love watching you fluff Blue.
I'm trying to Harvest Jack and Jill a few inches at a time and feed yummy food at the other end. I wish I had the room for a Blue 💙
Take care
❤Peggy❤
Thank you 👍🏼 I am behind on videos. Busy time of year at work. Hope all is well. Send some warm weather our way please. We need to melt the snow 🌨️
Hi Ann, i'm just about to put out a video showing castings from 100% leaf mold bedding and castings from 100% cardboard bedding. You're right, the colour difference is dramatic. I'm doing a test on my seedlings using each to see if there's any difference there!
By the way, do you ever have avocado pits cleave in half and become as hard as golf balls? I have several half pits that have been in my bin forever.
~ Sandra
The bin critters usually soften the pits to look like red paste. I have not had any harden before. I'm not sure what critters are responsible for breaking them down.
Hi Ann, I am jealous of your dry bin. Mine is outside witch I have to have a lid on it to keep the bigger critters out. The problem I have is the moisture I live in the Sierra mountains in California we have had sooo much rain and snow that I have not been able to lift the lid and let it dry out. We did get a couple of sunny days where I was able to lift the lid and start drying it but the rain is back, darn. I have been getting inside the bin and feeding and adding dry compost witch the worms immediately make their way into. I do enjoy watching you go through and fluffing up your bin. Thanks for taking the time and effort to share your fun with all of your fans. Sorry for rambling.
No problem. I hope you find a creative solution to your moisture issue.
I love that you've switched to reusable bags! It's made me love the channel even more!
It has been bothering me for a while. These get good reviews. Thank you for watching 😃
Tons of castings Ann! Those bags look pretty cool. I still use the regular ziplock but just keep using until it explodes. Any new peppers or tomatoes for this year. I think I lost 2 of my peppers I over wintered my jalapeño is still going strong for its 3rd overwintering.
About 10 new peppers. I bout some off Midwest gardener, New Mexico university, and chilli chump. Should be an interesting year.
Great to see blue. Its working really well as d worms are busy doing their work. Good wormies.
It is spring and they are really eating faster even though the temperature is not much higher. They surprise me all the time.
Great aeration and exploration of Blue!! Awesome show of worms at the end of the barrel!! I use those reusable baggies and love them!! I did manage to kind melt/deform the zip part of one of them but I still use it. Excellent video Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
How did you melt it? Put something hot in it or too hot of wash water? I don't want to do that until I have had them for a long while.
@@PlantObsessed Totally my fault, I think I rested it against something super hot...ironically I just checked it and for the most part it has slowly gotten back to shape and I can zip it still...They are pretty amazing baggies even with the abuse I give them!!
Привет Энн. Отличная работа! 👍👍👍
Hello. Thank you for watching 😃

Earthquake !! 😖🦠🪱
Lol right!! We don't get too many real ones in Illinois.
I actually do let the big chunks go to my garden sometimes. XD Keeps the soil from compacting out there just as readily as it does in the worm bin.
Not that either way is wrong. I suppose I am tickled that the reason you leave it in is also the reason I sometimes take it out.
That is a fair point. I have hard soil too.
Dude that shirt is so “60s” 😂 and the worms are very curious about what is in the news , even though it is junk mail😂😂
They will read anything. They are book worms. 🪱🤣🪱📚
I've been growing culinary mushrooms and when they are done the substrate goes in worm bin. The substrate has reactivated when put in prepared bedding sometimes.
I have a spent pink oyster mushroom block I have been wondering if I can refresh it. Did you get mushrooms from the prepared bedding?
@@PlantObsessed yes but like worms mushrooms need air and moisture also the more you mess with it the less they can do. Lol
Do you have a video showing how you created the barrel system and the way you have it mounted? I searched but did not see one.

Quick question from a Brit: those Avocado Pits seem huge to me. Is that because they come from giant fruits, or have they swollen to that size in the bin? May seem like a daft question, but some of the imported fruits we get here are like rock hard Goose eggs, or smaller! We're lucky to ever get anything that's nice to just eat where I live. I was going to do an experiment with my Wormery, but my Son threw away the Avocado, thinking he was doing me a favour 😒😀
Those are not normal grocery store avocados. I buy them from a guy in Florida that has a RUclips channel. @sleepylizard Some of the avocados can be a kilo or more (2 or 3 pounds) The pits are as big as the Hass I get at the store here.
@@PlantObsessed Oh wow, how interesting. I'll look up his channel. Thank you 😁
How did you make this 55gallon bin ? Please make a DIY vedio.
There is a whole playlist for blue. The first video is the creation.👍🏼😄🪱
I would like to see your your little Bonzo
I will have to do a community post of the bonsai soon as it warms up. Thank you for watching 😃👍🏼🪱
Sorry I can’t spell. Thank you.
There’s another lady copying off of you eat my shorts
Lol everybody is free to have their worms eat their shorts. I wish her luck 😉
