I have a bin that I am dreaming of doing this with. I would have to do it outside, so I have to figure that alll out before I start. My husband is such a dream, I know he will help me figure out how I can do this
Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts. It has been helpful for me. I am handicapped and having my worms in a barrel at my height to work them has worked for me. I am able to give 2.5 gallons of feeding weekly. I am adding more bins to increase my compost for my raised beds and greenhouse. This will enable me to grow more food for my home.
I have tried microwave cooking my potato peels a couple minutes and the worms go absolutely mental for cooked potato. I got the idea of a fishing worm website
I was sad as I had to trash a video I made, it just wasn't good enough. So I looked for a video about worms. Now I'm getting happy because I see someone grabbing worms in a huge bin. Nice videos, keep them coming.
I see a bunch of seedlings. That’s how I got a pumpkin plant one year 😁 You my not claim to be an expert. But you are definitely one in my eyes. You test and experiment and help to show what worms can truly breakdown. I still need to start my seeds, I sterilized my potting soil to hopefully kill off the fungus gnats. One year they were bad
@@PlantObsessed worm bins typically have the right amount of moisture. I think you should try it, plus it will give the neigh sayers something to talk about 😂 “You can’t do that”, “why would you do that” 😂🤦♂️
Loved watching your video! Excellent information! Glad to know that I'm not the only one calling the worms my babies. 😂 I could dig around in my bins for hours too. It's so much fun! Thanks so much for sharing, Ann!
I love the fluffing lol, my outdoor wormery is very successful meaning faster at making the castings making but the indoor worm bins seem slower to me to me, but I harvest the outdoor ones 6mos to a year. and check on the indoor ones more ( I can't help bothering them more....lol)
@@PlantObsessed understood. Hugs and kisses to your pugs from me and much gratitude to you for inspiring me to begin vermicomposting. Yours were the first videos I saw on RUclips and you make it seem so possible for someone to achieve their goals.
Glad to see someone else giving large feedings!! I just added 8lbs of food to my Vermibag Max. I typically feed 6lbs or more to my Urban Worm Bag as well. As long as you wait for the worms to work it large feedings work! Also do your castings smell like onions after adding them. I tried it once but all my castings smelled like onions and I stopped adding them.
YT recommended this video to me. Yet another different way I've seen of vermicomposting, and I really enjoyed watching. Subscribed too so now I'll see more 😁
@@PlantObsessed I started a tower last year, having seriously down scaled from massive muck heaps. It's a serious learning curve, and I love watching all the different ways everyone else does it too.
Why am I watching these silly videos? I have worms, absolutely love them. Each worm farmer is basically the same. But I find them so entertaining. Crazy. I actually gave them 3 bananas last night.
I have the same thoughts... I have my own worm bins. why do I watch other channels? I like to see what my worm family is up to. I also think there is always something to learn. Thank you for watching 😃
@@nancyfahey7518 I can try. It's a 55 gallon food grade barrel cut down the middle and then the two halves are attached to form a long trough. Maybe Mrs Plant Obsessed will correct me if I have this part wrong, but before the bin was full to the top, she used 'the wedge method' to fill the barrel out, basically feeding and adding bedding to the side of the existing worm bedding so that as the volume increases, the leading edge is constantly being added to, but the far end is being completely consumed by the worms that forage every last bite out of the far side. Now that the barrel is super full, she always feeds on the same side and manually keeps all the biggest pieces of food and debris on the feeding side. This naturally concentrates the far side with mostly castings which are also naturally dried out and ready for sifting.
I also use a wedge method in a container of 80cmx50cm, I see that your humus is nice dry to the end, mine instead, below, is a wet mush, I do not understand why, yet I put a lot of litter, paper, cardboard and wood chips
My wormery doesn't have a sink do you think that's a good enough reason to use a big yellow pair of kitchen gloves for the single reason of keeping the material in the bin ❤
Any paper or cardboard that is not laminated like some pizza or soda box is ok to use. North America PFAS regulation has it out of food packaging. I would use less of it than plain because it does take longer to breakdown.
Hey Anne, I'm starting my seed starting mix here in zone 5b. I'm using worm castings coir and perlite and vermiculite. Equal parts. I use a flow through system and would rather not like to filter my castings. I do however have pumpkin seeds starting to sprout in my mix. Is there a way that I can prevent seeds from food I've fed the worms from germinating? I could have stray tomato seeds in there too or smaller. I don't know. I have heard of baking the soil mix but I don't want to kill the microbes or the worms. I mean, after all isn't that why we are raising them? To boost the microbes and hormones in the soil for these plants? I want to be sure the seeds I start are the seeds that germinate.
@PlantObsessed I have two 55 gallon polly drums that I'm going to nut & bolt together at the bottoms. It should hold near 90 gallons of casting. I wish I could post a picture, but there is no option in the comment section. I just wasn't sure about the hole. All of my 27 gallon tote farms have holes, but they are outside. These new bins are for my basement.
Yes the bedding has been soaking in seaweed extract for a week or 2. When I only use dry cardboard it is to control a bin that is too wet. Does that help?
At first but then wow can it eat through the food and cardboard. I fed them 10 gallons of bedding and 2 gallons of scraps last week. It will be gone in a few weeks 🪱👍🏼😃

I never noticed an onion smell in the castings. It seems to take about 6 months or more to get them harvested. The smell is gone by then.

How many screws did you have to use in order to keep blue together?
About every inch around the connection point from both sides. Hind sight advice is I should have used nuts and bolts.
If cardboard and papers have some color ink on them, is it safe to use those cardboard/,papers for worm bedding ?

The only thing I can think of is to wet the mix before you plant and catch the sprouts that are not supposed to be there. Plant after that.
