Coming from managing massive heaps where I haven't had to worry about them, to a confined space where it's all about them, and their welfare too, I'm a total Helicopter Worm Mum at the start! Hehe, the worms really seem to enjoy hanging out in the damp mat- just like they do in my urban worm blanket :) I enjoyed watching and learning from all your Vermihut videos as well as the comments. I'm now running my hot frog 4 tray tower the same way as you rotate yours. Having the inoculating trays at the bottom is a game changer. It's great to have stored bedding getting moisture and microbes with minimal effort. As a bonus, worms no longer go to the sump :)

Thanks so much for passing on how this method works in your hot frog tower!! And of course thanks for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    The worms in my Urban Worm Bag just love my Urban Worm Blanket which I believe is coco coir and they have devoured 50% of one. I still have an intact blanket over that one, but they have discovered and it too is covered. This is an outside bin that is why I use the blankets to help with warmth this winter (Southern Santa Clara County zone 9b).

      That is very interesting! Right now I have a piece of newspaper and a piece of plastic on the top of the bedding of my UWB...A coco coir mat might be really helpful in the winter for it!! Right now, I'm fighting a little heat issues. I'm thinking about leaving the top open to the air to help vent off some of the heat it gets during the day. Any thoughts on leaving the top unzipped and fully open? I have mine on a screened in back porch. Thanks so much for letting us know how you use a coco coir Urban Worm Blanket in your UWB!! Clever worms to eat the padding in the lid - I wonder if they were planning an escape??! That certainly was a hefty feeding, Patrick! I think the holes at the bottom of each tray of the stacking systems keeps feedings from going anaerobic by supplying air from the bottom. Certainly, having any moisture drip away from the feeding helps keep the material from getting muddy.
    As Peggy said, the Tumbleweed systems don't have the coconut coir in their lids. I leave the lids off my two Tumbleweed stacking systems because they are outdoors. Flies in, flies out!
    ~ Sandra

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  Год назад +1

      😂🤣😂 Maybe they thought about escaping but stuck around for the coco coir snacks!! The trays really form a unique system, they are ever so slightly tapered so there is an air gap between the sides of each tray when they overlap. That combined with the holes on the bottom really provide for an airy system that also keeps it's humidity! I really find bins that drain to be the easiest to run so I'm loving this tower, my UWB and the Outdoor Worm Bin! The Tiny Worm bin keeps me on my toes!!! Thanks so much for watching Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

The worms are busily eating both, and I can always tell it's time for a feeding when the worms come up and lay on top of the blanket like a flattened ball. I was going to remove the blanket, but I've seen a few cocoons on the mat so I'll let it stay until eaten through.

      Great question! I do a unique rotation system with my trays that gets them full of microbes and moist bedding when it is time to feed them. I explain it in this video: ruclips.net/video/SfUzjr107Hw/видео.html Basically each tray gets filled with dry bedding and enters my worm tower on the bottom, where the trays above it drip their moisture from feedings into it. By the time it gets rotated to the top the bedding is now moist and super charged with microbes! The worms are able to absolutely devour food and I feed it for 60 days before I rotate it one level down to wait to be harvested. The video explains it better than I can with words😀 Thanks so much for the great question I'm sure other folks have as well! And of course thanks for stopping by to watch!!🪱🪱🪱

      Great question!! I would use 20% castings with some other media like regular potting soil or peat moss. Worm castings hold moisture incredibly well...shortly after germination the tiny seedlings will probably get water logged and die if you use 100% worm castings. A 20% mix does the best at keeping enough moisture for excellent germination and early seedling growth. • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  9 месяцев назад

      So this has happened to me once, but it may not be for the same reason, so here is what happened and some thoughts on why it might be happening for your bin. I started with 2000 worms and mine was relatively new and only had two trays on it. I had put it in a dark room while we had some guests over and I had skipped a feeding and kept putting it off and I think they were just trying to find some food. With it being dark, they took the opportunity to explore. When I found them around the lip, I scooped them back in, fed them and added another tray...and I have never seen it again in almost three years. So here are my thoughts. If your bin is new and you have a lot of worms, maybe add another tray down below with slightly damp bedding to give them more space. It is rare that underfeeding is an issue but if you have a lot of worms and not much space, then this could help. Overfeeding could be an issue, but if there are multiple trays on it then the worms can flee down and escape the off gassing or fermented areas. I'm assuming you put the coco coir mat that came with the VermiHut in the lid? This should be a much more inviting area for them then outside the lid. If the VermiHut is new you may want to keep the light on the them for a few more days while adding another tray. You could also put them somewhere where this more airflow or a fan...worm do not like dryness and wind or a gentle breeze will make them shudder back inside if they stick their heads out of those holes!! Eventually they will all get settled and this should not be an issue ever again! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱
