    Hi Patrick and Autumn, firstly, a big congratulations to your son on both accounts. You 2 must be very proud 😇
    Great video as always. 19lbs of castings in one go is excellent. Those UWB certainly do a good job. It amazes me how much food you are able to put in in one feeding. I know you have a lot of worms in there but still. Have fun, Mark : )

      Thank you Mark!! We are very proud of him!! Yes, these worms in my UWB really do eat a lot of food...I'm pretty sure it's my biggest population by now. I've found that feeding in 7-10 day intervals with smaller feedings just doesn't feel as natural as feeding every 15-10 days with bigger feedings...almost as if I'm interrupting them!! Thanks so much for watching & for all your continued support!!🪱🪱🪱

    Hello - Congrats to your son and future DIL. I'm a big fan of your channel and have learned a ton - thanks for that. Can you explain the correlation between having sandy soil and choosing not to use sand as grit?

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  День назад

      Thank you!! We appreciate the kind words!! Not using sand is more of personal choice. Here in Florida it seems like all the soil the builders use has a high sand content. Too much sand or clay and not enough humus or organic matter makes for inferior soil so in my garden beds I've tried to add more and more compost & vermicompost, so adding sand kinda defeats the purpose...but realistically adding a little bit of sand for grit in my worm bins really would not affect things too much. But since I have an overabundance of egg shells I use them. I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    Yay! Harvest day. I think ample eggshell powder is needed for the calcium it provides the bin, Patrick. With such large feedings, ample calcium means less likelihood of any protein poisoning from high bacteria, fermenting foods. I think it's one of those things that the calcium from powdered egg shells you feed today is available to the worms in the future, but maybe that's something to research!
    ~ Sandra

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  20 дней назад

      Yay, harvest day with less pressure on my back😂🤣😂 Yep, with my big feedings I'm sure that egg shell grit is helping enormously! Not sure if you get the same questions on your channel but lots of people ask if there are alternatives to egg shells or if they are needed at all, so I figured I would just ease their minds and let them know worms have been getting along without any of that stuff for eons!! But luckily for our worms we have plenty to go around!! Thanks so much for watching & for your insight as always Sandra!!🪱🪱🪱

    • @NanasWorms
      @NanasWorms 19 дней назад +1

      @@Vermicompost I think the difference with calcium in nature versus added calcium is worms don't necessarily have calcium available to them in a closed system. I just said to Brian over on my channel that I wonder if worms benefit from the calcium found in comfrey and borage when added to a worm bin because these plants are known to be extra rich in both calcium and magnesium. I definitely think they can find grit on pretty much any food scrap, though, as a demonstrated by Ann in her no grit bin.

    Hey Patrick, congrats to your son.
    Do you think it might be more useful to measure the harvest by volume instead of weight?
    The weight will vary wildly depending on moisture level. Maybe liters or pints/gallons would be better. Just a thought. Cheers!

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  19 дней назад +1

      Thank you!! That is a very interesting point! You are right, worm casting weight is very dependent on moisture content so volume would be a good additional, if not primary, unit of measure. I'm sure fine castings have greater ability to fill a volume container than bigger chunk castings, like putting rice into a jar versus marbles, so I guess it's not perfect either but I agree it is probably better than weight! I store my casting in old kitty litter containers which I think are about 3-4 gallons so maybe I can start trying to measure in gallons as well. Thanks for the very insightful question!! I'll try to remember to measure in gallons next harvest!! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

    So, the stuff in the store is sold dry weight. Did you re-weigh that after drying, and what was the dry yield? I really like that worm bag idea because it looks SO much easier to harvest than my worm tower.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  16 дней назад

      I did not re weigh it more dry...I sent all 19lbs home with my mom!! I could have probably pulled 30 pounds of worm castings out if I decided to dig up some more! This bin is my easiest bin to harvest. I actually just leave the castings in that mortar tray under the bin for a few days to let them dry a little before I throw them in my storage containers...or give them away. If you are thinking about getting one, and you have the space for it, you will definitely fall in love with it!! I didn't harvest until 6 months for my first harvest so I could fill it up, but now I have the ability to take out 20lbs a month at least if I want to. Thanks so much for watching Dan!!🪱🪱🪱

    I keep a mortar tray under my Urban Worm Bag, and the castings drip into it constantly, and they are always filled with worms. I took off the cover because worms were always trapped in the velcro. Lost too many that way.

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  19 дней назад

      Oh wow! I usually don't have anything dripping down, but I started spraying down the contents and using damp bedding recently because the castings felt crunchy in the little bottom bladder part. It worked, now the castings towards the bottom are wet! I haven't had any castings fall out yet. I stopped using the cover as well pretty early on because I wanted to see if anything was coming out of the bottom, luckily I never ran into issues of worms falling out then crawling back up to the Velcro! I wonder if you switched to dry bedding if that would help? Thanks for passing on the issues you've been dealing with in your UWB & of course thanks so much for watching Marco!!🪱🪱🪱

    Do you use your casting as a fertilizer

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  19 дней назад

      Yes! Every time I reuse a pot of soil I mix in worm castings in it to refresh it. I also make worm casting tea to pour over my plants and garden. Here is a video about that: ruclips.net/video/Q-Lfcsx0xUM/видео.html I also add worm castings directly to the hole I dig when I plant seedlings or trees and I top dress my plants with worm castings as well. I also make seed starting mix with it as in this video: ruclips.net/video/jSbdh7e_D04/видео.html In addition to nutrients, worm castings more importantly have the microbes that help the plants to absorb the nutrients they need. A synthetic fertilizer will boost plants in the short run, but they will be addicted to it like a drug and need more and more instead being able to get what is readily available in the soil through the microbial symbiotic relationships that worm castings provide! I hope this helps!! Thanks so much for watching John!!🪱🪱🪱

    I got an urban worm bag about 5 weeks ago. I went in to feed today and only found about 5 worms, I started with 1000 red wigglers. I was feeding once a week, maybe I overfed them? I’ve had a vermihut for 9 months and haven’t had any issues. Is there a way to know what I did wrong?
    My other question is can I just add new worms to the bag when they arrive? I ordered more red wigglers

    • @Vermicompost
      @Vermicompost  19 дней назад

      Without knowing anything about it, I would say you are probably right about over feeding. I would say if you had it inside and the temperature was not too warm then something in the food scraps probably spoiled or converted to ammonia which will kill worms quick. Did it have foul odors? I would say the best thing to do is restart with damp bedding and a few hand fulls of the VermiHut's contents to inoculate the UWB. Feed very sparingly, maybe every 10 days at first until you know they are eating the food. I feed mine on average every two weeks. And yes, after you empty the contents of the UWB (we don't know what killed the worms so best to get rid of it) and restart it, you can put the worms right in! I hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!!🪱🪱🪱

      🤣 Unexpected Ann inspired muddy thumbs up!! The moisture was falling down that drawstring so when I grabbed the string, it slimed me!! First time, since usually it's pretty dry below. As for the worms, it was only a few and I think the worms traveled up as the heat was generated and got stuck in the layers of paper towels. I'm sure most fled to the other side and down below, it was just the amount of heat and how quick that surprised me! We have three boys (no girls) with one married off to our first daughter in law, our middle one here about to married in a year and the last in college. It was an adjustment getting used to girls when they all started dating😂🤣😂 Thanks so much for watching Ann!!🪱🪱🪱
