The group belonged to Milt Jenkins. Paul Williams invited Diana into the group alongside his girlfriend, Betty McGlown, making 4 group members. There was a good reason why Gordy decided Diana should be lead singer.
@@Daisnap Because Florence didn’t have a commercial voice, and Diana did. Gordy wanted crossover records and groups that would sell internationally, and Diana’s sound could do that. Florence’s voice would never have given the group 12 number 1s, five of which were consecutive, all of which had Diana on lead.

The Supremes Archive I love her vocals on The Happening too. Actually, on that song her soprano and Mary's alto blend well together, as they also do on Where Did Our Love Go. I really liked the moments when they sound like a group rather than just a star in the spotlight and random background singers.
Many many times. Like how live when she did harmony on "Stop! In the Name of Love". Apparently H-D made her stand 17' away from the mic when they recorded, so her voice would not overpower Diana's. Her vocal is especially notable in "Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine".
@@5thdimensio284yep...everyone says she refused to 'play the game'....that is the reason why she gradually got put out. That was her doing. The same thing would happen and does happen today. Florence's problem was she didn't leave soon enough before she dug her own hole.

There was no leader! When they signed with Motown Berry Gordy was their leader like he was for The Temptations, Four Tops, Martha and The Vandellas Marvin Gaye and all the rest.
That was a weird system, that whole motown thing...I still think Mary was the prettiest...She was really sweet, too. I did a session with her, Jean Knight and Sherrie Payne when they were produced by Stevie Wonder...All the ladies were really nice.
If I remember correctly, I read in Mary Wilson's autobiography, that Florence's voice was so powerful that Berry Gordy would have the sound lowered on her microphone, because she would drown out Diana.

Diana in her first solo at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in Manhattan in 1970 and The Supremes when Jean Terrell was the lead in their early no Diana performances. Jean was great too. From Mississippi to Manhattan, that is a big accomplishment. I loved Mary Wilson. I was able to very briefly speak to her before a performance. Even though in a rush, she was very gracious. They are part of music history.

Listen to their version of People. Flo was allowed to sing a few lead vocals here and it's sophisticated. In the choruses even though Diana were not hitting high notes, the volume of her vocals were obviously adjusted to be more prominent however, Flo's vocals in the background is still soaring and rightfully so as she hits those higher notes. I read in Mary's bio that sometimes during recording, the engineer would remove her mic as it was really powerful she didn't need one!
@@williammials6080 Well, if you got the head honcho of a record label that's not only don't have their support but is actually against you then how can an outcast artist be able to do that without financial resources to back her up. That's how the music business was back in those days and still doing that practice today. The new Supremes when Diana left had great singles that could've been hits but without the backing and promotion of Motown it could only go as far. Their priority was to make Diana a solo superstar.
There was nothing to pay attention too! She was a backup singer. Like the Vandellas, the 2/3 ladies in the Marveletts and all the backup guys in the male groups! People focus in on lead singers! They are the ones who go on with a career after the group ends!
The treatment Florence got at Motown will be forever unforgiveable.. She recorded gorgeous solos for the Christmas album and not one of them was released. Mary got leads on several albums but not Florence. Mary did speak out about that but got nowhere. When Diana found out a producer had recorded a lead with Mary or Florence she would complain about it. It was all just wrong, wrong, wrong and so unnecessary. Diana was destined to become a great star (which she still is); she never had to be jealous, be cruel or plot against Mary and Florence. Mary said she and Florence were devastated on tours to find press conferences were taking place with Diana and Berry, press conferences they were not told about. And the night on the Tonight Show when after they sang Mary and Florence went backstage so only Diana could talk with Johnny Carson. She also said she and Florence were seldom told about plans for the group and changes in how it was going to be presented, as if they did not count for anything and were just the hired help. I was appalled by the Oprah Winfrey-Diana Ross interview which indicated Diana left the Supremes because Mary and Cindy were not treating her well. That never, ever happened. There was a brilliant five-year plan to move Diana to a solo career and at the same time keep the Supremes going with a new lead singer and it was carried out on schedule. I always felt the Winfrey interview was a set-up to explain why Mary and Cindy weren't on the Return to Love tour. It is all so sad, and I write that as a great fan of Diana Ross and appreciator of her talent and progress from the beginning.
Wayne - Wow, Diana was a insecure, backstabbing, scheming witch. I saw this video on youtube: Gladys said, " Diana Ross got her group..."Gladys Knight and the Pips" kicked off a show because their group was doing great and the crowd was cheering etc.. Later on DR apologised to Gladys, saying " We all had to grow up" No, DR, YOU had to grow up. I love Diana Ross but what you did was wrong. You could have let Mary and Florence have some of the light. The Canaanite woman responded to Jesus..."but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table."
Nothing beats talent except charisma. Flo had the "voice," but Diana had the "charisma," and brought the "Haute culture" to the group. It also didn't hurt Diana's extracurricular (sexual-producing a child) activities. That business is all cut-throat & sex. If you don't have the "I'll do anything," mentality to get on top, & stay there, that business will eat you alive. I've always loved the group "The Supremes," but Diana was my favorite. RIP Ms. Florence Ballard. Heaven is full of talented angels, & you're the "star" among them.
The affair and baby occured after Diana left the group to pursue a solo career! She left in January 1970 and her first child was born in August 1971. None of this had anything to do with who was chosen lead singer of the group in 1963/64. Berry Gordy was getting his business off the ground and made decisions based on $$$$$$$. He is a Businessman and did not play games with his artist back then. If he said so and so will be the lead, that's how it was to make the most money! He thought with his head not the other thing!
This very talented lady Flo unfortunately went through some very tough times but don't down Diana Ross because of it!! Diana was just as talented as Flo. Flo didn't out do Diana on anything. Diana's lead vocals were one hit after another. Nothing but hits.
They were so lovely, melodic and universally talented. I miss their level of grace and style in music. Artists now are in a battle to see who can out crude and out vulgar the next. What they don’t get is that style doesn’t age well. You look like a rare fool singing about your v-jay-jay power when you’re of a certain age.
Flo, Diana and Mary really was the most prominent group during 1964-79, at least for me. I never get tired of hearing their incredible harmony and rhythm.
It was a different time, the type of singing they do today would not have gone over as well in overt racist white usa ... Diana Ross with her singing partners pulled it off . I understand they all got paid the same I believe things would have gone differently had Ross not been the lead persona of the group -- they were bigger that just singers -- they were Iconic pioneers ; which was unheard of for girls though very normal for guys of that era! Elvis, The Beatles , The Rolling Stones etc. .
Where oh were would Blondie be ..Today with that powerhouse voice..probably matched with mary..tearing up collosiums worldwide...Rip..our beloved sister....
I couldn’t name you one of the backup singers to Martha Reeves of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. I don’t even think I could name you one of the Four Tops! It was Smokey Robinson but I couldn’t name one of the Miracles. But from the beginning with the Supremes, I knew they were Florence Ballard and Mary Wilson and Diana Ross. But first and foremost there was Flo Ballard. Loved Flo then, love her now, love her always. 🥰
NO True! It was never known that way. Sure she started the group but they were known as The Supremes in 1964/65! Then Diana emerged and was highlighted because she had sang lead on everything! The average person for a long time did not know the girls by name! Then they knew Diana! Because of her presence! When Florence became known???? It was when she died Broke and on welfare so young.
Great job. You know Diana was angry. Look at the video where she gives Patti the mic and Pattie works it out. She stayed a Lil hot bout that for a while. Love the video.

Flo was the prettiest and best singer in the group!
by your standards.
They were all gorgeous, Flo was tall for the times and so pretty
How many solo hits did Flo have, sick of that lie about Flo being a great singer, that can't be proven without solo hits.
@@cravendubose8179 They were not allowed to have many solos, but we all heard their voices individually, the consensus is that all 3 Supremes had beautiful voices, they could sing, but Diana Ross's voice was more appropriate for most of the songs picked for the Supremes as the lead, the other two singers Florence and Mary, had more gospel type voices appropriate for other type songs , it all depended on the songs and producer Berry Gordy felt Diana Ross's voice was more 'bubble gum, mainstream' commercial, and for Supremes he pretty much put them as back up.
I heard Florence take the lead when the Supremes and the Andrew sisters switched numbers on the Sammy Davis show,Florence's voice was perfect for those 1940's type music,Diana's voice would of been beautiful, but more little girlish for Swing/Jazz, loved Florence's renditions of the Andrew Sisters songs and both Mary and Diana were great to,but Florence took the lead.
@@cravendubose8179 flo was the best singer in the group and that’s okay HOWEVER Diana had the star quality and the voice that was made for the type of music she was doing
Absolutely Right.. That Is How You End Those Song... Miss Flo!!
Reminds me of Mama Cass - she may have been singing backup and not overpowering, but damn that soul came right through ....
You might be talking about Mama Michelle Phillips. Cass was the usual lead singer of the Mamas and the Papas. Michelle rarely got a chance, but on her sole solo album Victim of Romance , Michelle proved she did have a very good voice. Also she sounds very good on the song, No Love Today. I wish Michelle had done music instead of acting .She didnt have much of an acting career.

Holland Dozier and Holland said that they felt Florence was the strongest vocally of all the Supremes. i.e., she was the best singer in the group.
@@deborahmazza8123 yes, it appeared Diana's voice was more commercial. All three were very talented.
FLO WAS ALWAYS BETTER THAN DIANE ROSS
Florence did have a problem with alcohol. Maybe that had a lot to do with her being put out of the group.
Look at UNSUNG to get the true story! She drank too much and started showing up late. She let herself go and was difficult. After the Supremes... It was all Man Problems!
It really was Florence Ballard's group and they invited Diana Ross into the group and Berry Gordy let Diana take over!
The group belonged to Milt Jenkins. Paul Williams invited Diana into the group alongside his girlfriend, Betty McGlown, making 4 group members. There was a good reason why Gordy decided Diana should be lead singer.
@@lyndad5210 What was the good reason?
@@Daisnap Because Florence didn’t have a commercial voice, and Diana did. Gordy wanted crossover records and groups that would sell internationally, and Diana’s sound could do that. Florence’s voice would never have given the group 12 number 1s, five of which were consecutive, all of which had Diana on lead.
@@lyndad5210 Ah. Interesting. Thanks. The gifted Supremes certainly were a huge phenomenon.
I honestly think Florence would have been a better lead singer than Diana.
Flo was a vocal beast! I hate how Berry dimmed her light and that Diana went along with it... smh
Florence had an incredible voice and the song that sticks out to me is the 1965 Mike Douglas show when Diana messed up the start of "I hear a Symphony". Towards the end you can REALLY hear Flo belt it out. Love those Supremes!
Flo was the muscle vocally - and I think it was good for Diana, as it pushed her to sound stronger.
people always try to reiterate this competition or friction between Diana and Florence But the irony is it was those two voices that were the backbone to all of the Supremes sound Diane and Florence singing the foundation for all of the harmonies on those songs

Not True!
Never got all the hype about Dianna Ross. Whether it was singing, acting, or dancing, even when I was a kid in the 60s and 70s I was never that impressed. Always wondered what was the big deal.
Same here. And I was really mad that they had her in the movie rendition of The Wiz instead of Stephanie Mills. I had seen the play 3 years earlier and loved Stephanie Mills' voice.
Even when they said she introduced the Jackson 5. I NEVER understood. Still don't.
@@DawnietotheMax oh Steph Mill was supposed to sing. Aw man I really like her. I think 🤔 her better than Diana.
@@nonwilson5587 You can find the original soundtrack of the Wiz online. You would have to look for the theatre version versus the movie version.
@@nonwilson5587 Then I'll explain it if you're that dumb: Diana was THE big pull at Motown when the J5 came along. By putting HER name to the group ("Diana Ross introduces The Jackson 5ive") then it made people aware. As great as they were, they were flopping to start off with so by adding Diana's name it made them a household name. So now maybe you understand it?

Flo was originally the lead singer but something about Dianna ended up putting her in the position. I feel sad for how Flo's life went after the Supremes ended.
That symphony note at the beginning gives me chills flo was a true vocal beast. It's so sad she was pushed into the back. They could have at least given them filler songs on the album to sing lead on and given Diana the singles. Like she didn't need to sing everything
Diana was probably giving head so she was ahead of everybody straining that voice!!!

@supremesarchive
There are some other moments that Flo *KILLED IT* or even overpowered Mary and Diana!
*This woman's voice could throw down anything/anybody without a Mic!*
But these are my favorite moments :)
All I can say to that is "woo-woo". :-)
for real!
Do you know the name of the performance where all three have parts to sing? It was very early on in their careers I believe,
The one song that did it for me was ` Stop in the name of love ` where Flo really belted it out and drowned out Ross.
Thats why Diana got rid of Flo

+DetroitLives313 Thank you! It is a pleasure to help keep the music playing, its history and music have inspired so many people, including me. I love being a fan of theirs :)
That's way Mary was the one closer to the mic, you would hear Florence with or without it
Florence Ballard is the leader of the group
Damn right she started it and named them !
Mary and Sherrie were not lead singers! Jean was just ok with her one hit , but could not sustain a solo career....
If I remember correctly, I read in Mary Wilson's autobiography, that Florence's voice was so powerful that Berry Gordy would have the sound lowered on her microphone, because she would drown out Diana.
Gladys had an interview I can’t remember with who but she said they were on the same program with Diana Ross and she Diana told berry not to let them go on.. meaning Gladys and the Pips at that time. Berry told them to leave.. true story I wish I could come across the interview again...
how can she only be The Supremes no. 2 when she all have the voice?
Because she was not going to take advice...which is positive and negative. Was she wiiling to be turned into a megastar or was she always bitching? You work with someone who aspires....and so berry did.
Flo was the lead singer first and she had a beautiful voice l watched it on unsung

They were all so good including Cindy Birdsong. Diane is Diane and is a consummate professional and Superstar. I've seen them perform live.

Funny how it never worked out after she was Fired? Her Career!
They were all great in their own right.
I get goosebumps when I hear that last note!
I always loved how Flo could mimic Ross's voice. It got Ross out of a lot of hot water.
I wish they all just stayed together. They all complemented each other musically!
I wish I had paid more attention to Flo but RUclips videos nicely capture those dazzling lost moments.

On the Supremes album, "We remember Sam Cooke, " Flo's solo version of "Ain't that good news," is dynamite!

Too much mismanagement of talent. What were these people thinking?
It was a different time, the type of singing they do today would not have gone over as well in overt racist white usa ... Diana Ross with her singing partners pulled it off . I understand they all got paid the same I believe things would have gone differently had Ross not been the lead persona of the group -- they were bigger that just singers -- they were Iconic pioneers ; which was unheard of for girls though very normal for guys of that era!
