Mary Wilson asked Are you envious/jealous of Diana Ross (2000 Full Interview)

- Опубликовано: 19 сен 2019
- Mary Wilson (cuurrently on Dancing with the Stars) was interviewed April 21, 2000 by Bryant Gumbel on "The Early Show". They discussed Mary Wilson not taking part in The Supremes Reunion Tour in the year 2000, and what role Diana Ross played in the situation. The reunion tour in 2000 was called the "Return To Love" tour, which featured Diana Ross along with Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence. Scherrie & Lynda were not original Supremes. Diana Ross was the only original Supreme in that 2000 "Reunion" tour. The original Supremes under Motown were Diana Ross, Mary Wilson, and Florence Ballard, and eventually Cindy Birdsong replaced Florence Ballard in 1967 by Berry Gordy.
Mary looked beautiful!. She handled all of that with such class!!
I wish Mae-ry Wilson can get a #1 hit record before she turns 80!
Mary Wilson you temptress...you should be ashamed for seducing someone young enough to be your son😇

And RIP to Mary also. Without Flo and Mary, there would be no Supremes
🤔 Amen! 🌹 RIP Mary Wilson,76 (1944-2021) ☆🎤☆🎤☆🎤 What a shame they couldn't get together for the "Reunion" tour. They all should've been paid the same amount. 🤔 But l think Cindy Birdsong was having medical issues around that time. Correct me if I'm wrong. Maybe they could've postpone it.
@@philipkelly5640 you said it all.
@@philipkelly5640 RIP Flo & Mary. But Mary was always jealous & envious of Diana. She (Diana) could have went on her own LONG before she did, but she didn't. Mary use to say otherwise. ( that she wasn't jealous) Things were bad but I think things really hit the fan when Diana had an affair with Berry Gordy & a child. Just look at tapes/videos when they use to perform years ago. Mary wanted to be noticed so bad. It was like she was in competition with Diana. In reports, she tried to turn people & other members against Diana. Diana had it good & it was a lot of animosity towards her. She told Oprah she would come in the dressing rooms & the other 2 would not speak to her or talk to her. (right before performances) PL (Blue Bells) was just as worse. I am so glad Diana did a good job of not letting it publicly phase her! When I was a teen, I was a Supremes fanatic! (Google/YTUBE please don't take out or add to this like you usually do. Watch them (ya'll) they will do it!
Class personified, RIP Mary.
She was so pretty and talented. Rest in paradise fellow Detroiter.
Mary Wilson gave us an example of how powerful people in show business can be. She stood up loudly and energetically for financial fairness where record sale royalties were concerned. What a great woman. She inspired me every day. Mary inspires me every day.
MARY WILSON AND FLORENCE WERE THE MOST ATTRACTIVE AND TalLENTED OF THE SUPREMES THEY WERENT GIVEN A CHANCE TO SHINE BUT WE ALL EVENTUALLY LEARNED WHY😅
So talented - back when music was REAL🎤
Don't be offended, but having heard Flo ,Cindy and Mary solo singing ,none of them came anywhere close as to what Diana could do vocally.@@user-mv5ss7zk2n
@@user-mv5ss7zk2n Mary and Florence certainly did shine in the first year or two after the Supremes hit it big, but things were changing drastically by the summer of 1966 when Diana was already thinking of leaving the group. I read that Diana was supposed to leave in 1967, but things hit the skids with Florence, which meant that Diana had to stay in the group while they replaced Florence with Cindy, because Diana and Florence couldn't leave the group at the same time.
If Florence had stayed and Diana had left the group in 1967 as originally planned, guess who would have taken over as lead singer? You got it -- Florence. Florence realized this as years went on and regretted that she didn't play her final year in The Supremes more strategically. Mary and Florence were definitely treated unfairly, but the end game should have really been just outlasting Diana in the group.

She was always the prettiest of the group.
I don’t believe she was ever jealous but I do believe she felt betrayed by Diana
WITH GOOD REASON!
She WAS betrayed by Diane!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember reading that trouble started between The Supremes when Diane changed her name to Diana. Also, when Berry Gordy changed the name of The Supremes to "Diana Ross & the Supremes". Berry claimed this was a "marketing strategy" on his behalf for Motown. I considered it favoritism for Diana! If any of the surviving members ever reunite (Diana, Cindy Birdsong [whom is now a minister in her church, which I commend her for that!] & Jean Terrel, your guess is as good as mine! But, I promise not to hold my breath waiting for it!
@@kurtsupreme So was Florence Ballard!🤣😜😝
@@michaelhughes432 Cindy Birdsong has had several strokes, is unable to talk or walk, and uses a feeding tube to eat.............she is nearly 84 years old. Mary and Flo are gone, Diane is a self-centered "PIG," and the possibility of a SUPREMES reunion is now impossible!
Johnnie Mae sure raised a beautiful woman. Rest In Peace. Beautiful Mary
She was 56 years old when this was taped. Wow, she was so beautiful, posed and presented herself so well. Mary Wilson was my favorite Supreme!
Hey sexy
She was gorgeous! Just stunning!!!
@@v.a.993 one music journalist once said of the Supremes that Florence was the prettiest, Mary the best singer but Diana knew that screwing the boss is what mattered most.
Mary had no reason to be jealous of anyone.
@@gerardmackay8909 Well, that was certainly one way of putting it, but I think all three of The Supremes were great singers in very different ways. Their singing styles and voices were all too different to even compare.
Berry wanted The Supremes to be a pop group, and Diana was absolutely the right choice to be the lead singer. Diana could have totally sung major hits in the early to mid 60s by singers like Lesley Gore, Shelley Fabares, and Petula Clark in the same keys and with the same arrangements, and without seeing her in person, audiences wouldn't have even been sure she was black.
Berry wasn't in a romantic relationship with Diana when The Supremes first hit it big, and I honestly don't think their relationship was a major factor in the group's success, but it certainly threw off the interpersonal dynamics of the ladies in the group.
How arrogant is that interviewer. Putting his face in Mary's face like that. Mary kept her cool and composure. Classy Lady. You can tell it was all about respect with her.

He's Bryant Gumble. I don't expect any less.

Yeah he was a bit blunt. But the question was legit. Although he could have phrased it differently: "some of her fans are saying you wrote that book because you're jealous of her ...how do you respond to that ".
Mary could have also answered it differently, instead she said "do I look jealous of her ". Terrible answer.

@Jordan Williams He is stupid is what he is. Probably another bitter Diana Ross fan boy. LOL!
But in such a boring way, unlike Diana who has those razor sharp cheekbones, those giant eyes and full lips where as Diana could be and could wear anything. Its the reason I never liked Cindy Crawford just another pretty boring face but Linda Evangelista was a star she could be anything. And Mary makes me sick all she does is complain.
Mary Wilson deserved a better interviewer.
I don't think Ms.Wilson was jealous of Ms. Ross, just heartbroken at how things played out between the 3 of them and how she was too young and hopeless to try and reach out to her best friends and try to reason them.
I agree
I also Agree.
I read both of Mary Wilson's books, and if Diana Ross was blessed with superstar solo talent, Mary got all the writing juice. Having said that, it was clear from reading Mary's second book and other books about the Supremes that Mary held onto a major grudge after Diana left the group.
I think Mary's feelings about Diana were complicated, but the truth is that sometimes you have to choose to either forgive the past and move on or hold on to the grudge. There was a strong push-pull aspect to Mary's behavior with Diana. Mary was sometimes friends with Diana but more often frenemies. I think Diana was genuinely self-absorbed and clueless enough to be surprised at the Motown 25 incident and by what Mary wrote in both her books. When Mary struck back, she struck hard.
So I agree that Mary probably wasn't jealous of Diana, but her behavior over the years read more resentful than heartbroken. However, Mary was savvy enough to make it sound an interviews like she missed her long past friendship with Diana.
I think the complete opposite. Martinella Watson was HYPER ENVIOUS AND EXTREMELY JEALOUS. Wonton was not young or hopeless in 2000! You must be crazy.

I loved me some Diana until I saw the real woman. Diane is the personal side of this woman, Diana, although a mistake on her birth certificate, is that monster that Berry Gordy created & I hope he burns in hell for it. What people wont do for money, they will kill their entire family for it, alienate the whole world & for what, they might have had an exceptional life while they were here, but after they close their eyes in death, none of that is going w/them to the cemetery/crematory besides an over charged funeral & repass & after that, people move on to the next sucker. Case in point, Ive worked in the funeral industry for nearly 50 years & the lady who I started with, had five funeral homes operating @ the same time, & that is quite a feat for a black person in the south in the "good ol' days", but as famous as she was, she was involved in an automobile accident that killed one of her sisters & paralyzed her, but through physical therapy & her faith in God, she was enabled to walk w/a walker & then a cane, but during her recovery, her employees & family took everything she owned but the clothes on her back & before she could reaize what was happening, she was down to two funeral homes & eventually had to close one of those. Once out of sight, the other funeral home in town had taken over & this poor lady never bounced back to the person she was before & things got so bad, her advanced age & mental state caused her to have Alzheimer's Disease, & that caused her to sell her last funeral home & be put into a nursing home. Three years later, unfortunately she passed away, & @ her funeral there were maybe 20 people, not including family & other morticians she helped get started, was in attendance. She was such a sweetheart that if a family didnt have enough money for a service, she would use a payment to which she never saw any of that money & they didnt have the decency to pay their respects to a beautiful soul & lady, Mrs. L. T. (Mamie) Hewing.

I'm just learning of her passing today. My earliest memories of Mary Wilson was when I was 4 or 5 years old. The Supremes were heavily played on the radio and were on TV quite a bit. My favorite 3 songs by them was: "Stone Love", "Where Did Our Love Go" and "Floy Joy". I always, always, always thought that Mary was the most beautiful, then Florence....I offer my deepest condolences to her family and pray that the Creator and Sustainer of our soul bless and accept her precious soul and greatly reward her for all the smiles of joy she helped bring to our lives as an entertainer. My she finally reunite with her young son, Raphael, who preceded her in death. May she be a guardian angel to those who knew her best and were a part of her family/friend circle.
That man is so rude, intrusive and has no respect or boundaries. A narcissistic bully if I ever saw one.
This is the reason why I have no trust in the media whatsoever. They can paint you as a reprobate, and they never have to worry about being questioned themselves. Mary handled this interview with grace a class. She wasn't trying to "Throw shade!" This interview further explains Diana's statement to Barbara Walters on that 20/20 interview where she [Diana] indicated Mary's comment, "what took you so long to call?" Well, it answers my question. Diana also told Walters that Mary did have to pay for a gown, an arrangement, etc. Perhaps would have liked to have some say so in the Supremes' arrangements for a show, JS! Again, I think the fans are the ones who have kept any sort of feud stirring.
You're right! Diane mentioned the "what took you so long?" comment. Makes sense.

Mary was definitely SUPREME in more ways than one! A very classy lady who was honest, sincere and definitely her own person. Godspeed Mary!!
She was full of jealously AND revenge . Notice how she answered the question with a question ! -she was no fool .
She spent 40 years preserving the Supremes image and diminishing it all at the same time by trying to bring down the lead vocalist /stable mate Diana Ross . Without those vocals we could surmise there wouldn’t even of been the Supremes .
Diana Ross due to her mass appeal has continued on regardless with a new album in ‘21 & a new show in ‘22.
Nothing stopped her in the end but that was no thanks to Mary Wilson who at points started to create a negative impact on Diana Ross’s career -what a legacy to be remembered for .
A vindictive person without a doubt .
I loved Mary and think both of her books are awesome, but I have to agree with you. I would say Mary was more resentful than jealous, though. Mary held a grudge after Diana left the Supremes and paid Diana in the back in spades over the years. Of course, Mary was always savvy enough to come across as gracious in interviews, which has fooled many people over the years.
She was beautiful even at 56! Loved her hair. The style. I don’t blame the fans of being disappointed by not seeing all three original ones together. Why in the world would Diana want to change her co singers?! Foolish decision.

If every man had a woman like this, there would be eternal peace. She is everything.
And if we had a true gentleman there would be enteral peace
Not every man . . . . . There is women that prefer women and man that prefer men. No exceptions and no personal views.
@@tammyjohnson4414whole time they would’ve dogged her out too . They just caption on anything just to hear themselves talk I see
Mary Wilson had class.
3:57 I would ask him to back up!!!!
Feels COVIDity 🦠huh🤔 😹
She is a class act
May Mary Wilson #RIP. I was very shocked when she died. I was looking forward to seeing her more, when time ran out. (1944 - 2021).
Can’t believe Mary has gone 💙. Rest Well
Friendship is a gift from God. I so wish that Diana and Mary could have made it work.
Speaking the truth
Florence and Mary will a!ways be a supreme , RIP, you are loved and never forgotten 💜🙏
She was always THE most beautiful of the group, it was her I was crushing on as a child in the 60's, and even more so when I met her by chance on a beach in L.A. when I was 16.
Mary Wilson was pure class. She never bad mouthed anyone. RIP beautiful lady 🙏 🙏
I grew up with their music....its the sound track of my youth.
One of my cousin's (lifelong Detroit resident) told me Detroit turned their back on Diana for how she acted once she left the group. "She forgot where she came from and turned her back on her friends especially Florence when she was down and out. The nail in the coffin was when she 'showed up and showed out' making a spectacle, at Florence's funeral! Detroit was done with her!"
I've read tidbits over the years about Diana being an hard to please and UNlikeable Diva.
The total opposite to Mary, who's always appeared to be nice, gracious, unpretentious and quite a beautiful and admirable LADY!
Bryant gum REALLY show Mary some RESPECT
"Diana is Diana" says it all.
Facts
@@ceeceetracey9839 ack in 1999 "The 55-year-old diva was arrested after allegedly assaulting a female security officer who tried to body-search her while she waited in Terminal 4 to board the 10.50am Concorde flight to New York".
A routine body search turned into an angry confrontation when Ross accused the security officer of touching her breast during the check. An eyewitness said the flamboyant singer reacted by touching the officer's breast, exclaiming "How do you like it?"
Ross then stormed off to the VIP lounge, telling reporters: "I'm absolutely furious. Do you know when they search you, they actually touch your breast? It's disgraceful. They wouldn't touch a man's penis, would they?"
One security man said: "She suddenly went mad. She was shouting and screaming that the girl had touched her breast."
@@northnsouth6813 lolol i remember that
Well done Mary Wilson love always.
Not only was Mary the beautiful one but people that knew her in person said that she was extremely lovely to know. Bless her❤
Fact is DIANA was always the one with the Personality, Class, and Voice ! Not everyone has STAR QUALITY. DIANA DID !
RIP my beautiful sister
I LOVE that she said Diana IS bigger than the Supremes, except in relation to being one. That is amazing!
@Ronald McFondle that's why no one was going to pay to see Diana Ross and two nobodies that SHE didn't even know.
@@annadraper8403 Correct. It was a colossal miscalculation on Diana's part. I personally think Cindy Birdsong was the linchpin. Her participation in the tour would have shifted the public's perception somewhat and left Mary the odd woman out. I also think that Diana and the promoters made a huge mistake in not getting Jean Terrell.
Even if the financials had been able to be worked out with Mary, I am still not sure that she would have been able to work with Diana on stage or deal with her on a constant basis off stage. Maybe, maybe not, but I do not think Mary would have tolerated the same kind of stage dynamic The Supremes had when Diana left the group.
Having said that, I think the tour could have been a huge success with Diana, Cindy, Jean, Scherrie, and Lynda.
I went to that tour. Still have the tour program. I wish Mary Wilson had of done the tour. I do have to say that the show was absolutely enjoyable from beginning to end. Even I was surprised how great it turned out to be.
I've met Mary. She is one of the most genuine and down to earth people you could ever have the pleasure to be around..
Rip ms . Wilson ❤️🙏🏽
Those old queens were not having it! We want the Supremes!
That's true. The Supremes were to my gen of gay men what Madonna became to the '80s gen. We don't like fake tours that have anonymous singers standing in 'cause there ain't nothin' like the real thing baby.... I kept hoping to see The Supremes live but they just couldn't put egos aside enough to do it; it would've been a gold mine for all involved and a blast for all of us who loved The Supremes. Oh well, now we got ..umm...who we got? Billy Eilish? I like her but to me she is a contemporary fusion of Ricki Lee Jones and Janis Ian. Where have all the divas gone? I am always looking, and the one who seems so right for right now is Hope Sandoval, who is exquisite. Say what you will about us "old queens" but we got great taste baby! And we will be the ones to let the rest of you know who the next Supremes or Streisand or Diana Ross are...
😁😂 No I guess they weren't.
She's absolutely gorgeous.
What a beauty! 😍
😁😁😁😂😂😂😂
