I’m glad Tina called the quits and you pressed on. The beauty about you guy’s relationship is the fact that you have the freedom to pursue each other’s dreams. Love you guys! 💝
Great video! I climbed Ferns Nipple 2 years ago. The last 30 ft was very sketchy! I was definitely nervous on the last stretch. You were smart turning around if you didn't feel comfortable about it. Thanks for filming this. It brought back good memories!
Nice! I watched a video of a guy climbing it before we went and I could just tell by his hand holds that there was a spot that might be over my head. I went up partway but the exposure combined with the knowledge that my downclimbing skills are less capable than my skills climbing up made me turn around.
This is the exact banter of my wife and I. We seriously love the shit out of the videos and the time you put into the edits. I cant wait for us to tackle some of the hikes you guys have posted. Cheers from the east coast.
Wow, stunning hike. Glad you showed the side-on view at 9:26, that short but almost vertical swell would totally block me out. Things look so easy from far away, but oh boy is it a different story when you have all that air around you and under you. I know I wouldn't get to the top but I can't wait to try 😁. Favorite national park.
This is a fun and pretty route. It really stunk getting so close, but there was one or two moves right at the top that I just didn't feel comfortable with. We absolutely love Capitol Reef. Can't wait to go back.
The great mountaineer Ed Viesturs said "Getting to the summit is optional. Getting to the bottom is mandatory." A quote my wife and I live by. Glad to see you do also.

I actually gave the Garmin to Tina when I was hiking since she could see me from where she stopped. She was like "You need this". I said "If I fall, YOU need this because if I fall I'm probably not gonna be able to activate it."
@@JerryArizona Good response since Tina could see you. A guy fell doing El Diente near us and lost his backpack, but had his inReach in his pant’s pocket. He was safely rescued. What an epic day! And yah know, Fern's Nipple will be there any time you want to go back. Good call to call it. Capital Reef is just about our most favorite place to go in Utah. Have done pretty well all the hikes there, more than once. But not this one! Will be checking it out next time we are there. Thanks for the vid!
Love these Capitol Reef videos. Was my dads favorite park. Not sure if you've already done them but Sulphur Creek and Chimney Rock/Spring Canyon are 2 more in the park.
Twice in Zion NP I've enjoyed the views from Scout Lookout and not made the final push to Angles Landing because I wasn't comfortable with the risk. I'm way OK with it too, as the views are spectacular from Scout Lookout.
This is great! My favorite park of the Utah parks. When I did the Beehive Traverse route in 18, you follow some of that same trail, but you end up on the east side of the nipple and then drop down into a canyon. I remember looking at the peak and thinking, woof, summiting that looks sketch! Even with my 20+ years of climbing experience, some things still make my gut turn.
Ah man. With that much climbing experience, you'd probably make short work of it. I have none (outside of canyoneering) and almost made it. Just 1 or 2 more moves and I'd have had it. But I definitely knew that coming down would be even trickier and in no way felt I was up for that.
This one isn't well marked at all. I wouldn't go if you don't have a GPS with the trail marked and off trail exploring. There is a similar trail that is very well marked and maintained across the canyon to Cassidy Arch. If you aren't confident in your abilities to wayfind, I'd recommend that one.
"Healthy sense of self preservation" .... best line on the video. Looks like a good day and remember to enjoy the journey, to me it's often more important than the destination. Worried you weren't going to share Tina flipping you off, but you are always "have the talent" to entice at least one good flip-off.
Wish I had known about this social trail when visiting last year! Great video as usual! Also, what model of 4Runner do you have? I’m looking to hit a lot of the off road sites you’ve been to. Thanks!
Honestly I forget what the exact model is. It's something above an SR5 but below the TRD Pro. Basically the top model we could get without paying the $10,000 upcharge to have a TRD stamp on it. It's Tina's 4Runner. I have a lowly Tacoma SR5. You can definitely feel the different in the smoothness of the ride between the two, but my Tacoma will go anywhere I want to go. It's just gonna bounce me around a lot more.
Hey now... healthy respect of the trail is exactly what makes you come back to hike another trail! Eric is probably watching this and saying... Love that hike, was this trip recently? How were the conditions. The hike up to ferns nipple passes right by the start of Na Gah Canyon, it makes for a great alternate descent off the nip.
Jerry, what at your five favorite hikes in Sedona? Heading there in late February. So many from which to choose, I’d appreciate you suggestions. My wife and I are experienced AZ hikers, but we don’t climb (like with ropes and such). Thank you!
Hmmm. The thing about Sedona is it's crowded. So if you want to do the popular hikes, go early in the morning. Like if you go to Cathedral Rock first and expect to go to Soldier Pass after, the parking lot for Soldier Pass will probably be full. My favorite is West Fork (going past the end of the maintained trail), but in February the water will be freezing if not entirely impassable. There are always the popular ones like Cathedral Rock, Bell Rock, Soldier Pass, Devil's Bridge and nowadays the Subway Cave in Boynton. Lesser known hikes: Hangover Trail is fun (there is some exposure, but nothing technical). Robber's Roost is a fun short hike. Sterling Pass to Vultee Arch is a lesser hiked one. Wilson Mountain (north is less busy, south is a little more scenic imo, but fills up). I need to hike Huckabee, Birthing Cave and Wind Caves. Look interesting but I haven't tried them yet. I typically go more off the beaten path in Sedona where ropes or backpacks are needed anymore. It just gets really crowded. But if you haven't gone before, I'd recommend any of those I listed. Just do the really popular ones in the AM and plan for a lesser known one after.
Everything between Escalante and Hiite......I wish it wasn't such a long drive for us, but I keep getting drawn back and always seem to find more places to add to my list to explore than I actually got to see when I get back.
I guess it's just called "Curry Pizza". Looks like they have more than one location. We've driven by it a ton of times but never tried it until my friend recommended it. It was actually really good if you like curry.
Love your videos. Hope you took the Utah12 all the way from Bryce in the west. And if you ever get a chance, take the Utah 95 out of Capitol Reef east all the way through Bears Ears. The two best drives in the Lower 48.
The next trek takes a piece of rope, some active camming chock for the cracks, carabiners and your wife to belay you! When I was doing a lot of Via Ferrata in the Dolomites, one day I had to help a family who had climbed too high and couldn't come down, luckily for them, I had a rope in my backpack and I helped them to come back down, and we avoided calling for help. Thanks for sharing your video, well done. Could you give me more details about the trail ?
I can't really provide good links here in the comments for routes. But if you Google it, some will come up. Road Trip Ryan has a decent write up. I found a video on RUclips of someone who did it solo that was also good info. If you have rock climbing ability, it probably isn't that bad. But for an average hiker it's intimidating. My canyoneering experience got me a lot farther than Tina, but I needed a couple rock climber moves at the very top.
@@JerryArizona Thanks for the info for Ryan's web page. As I am recently retired and will be moving from Europe to Virginia, I will first explore the eastern part of the United States by doing the Appalachian trail first, but since I was a climber, I would like well get back to it again with my children, I plan to go to the western part where the parks are in 2024 and visit, but do some climbing there too. Thank you for sharing, I intend to share my experiences also on RUclips by making some videos with a drone and giving some explanations on the different climbing techniques as well as on the equipment. When you said "Indian pizza may be more dangerous than climbing Fern's Nipple" I laughed out loud. I thought the same thing last April, but after hiking Navajo Knobs/Hickman Bridge I got a Bhandi Special for dinner and was glad I did.Very good but I did make sure to take the toilet paper roll from my hotel with me the next day to Cathedral Valley
Yeah. Not kidding when I said I was a little nervous. This isn't a place where I want to be adventurous with my food. But this place was solid. I think I got the same pizza at the recommendation of the guy working the register.
The descent is an entirely different obstacle. I had to turn around on the Nambe Lake trail last week. With a mile to go, the steep ascent, snow, and ice made me turn around to get off the mountain before dark. Know your limits.
"Summit fever" is a real thing that gets a lot of people in trouble. I REALLY wish I'd made it. Not enough to be typing this from a hospital bed though.....
Just think of the jokes Tina could make about the penis rock after you make the turn after the hill at the entry of Arches. Hers would probably be a lot better than yours. But because you guys have such good taste we will never hear them…and that’s a shame. LOL. Another great video. Thanks
Oh, I may have a few such jokes on video. Definitely a shame trying to avoid a video deletion sometimes.....Plenty of content left out of this one, even. Have to try to keep it halfway family friendly. (But only halfway.)
ah i left that comment before I watched the video -- I have full video of the climb up the nipple, i've just been lax with learning how to edit and post all my hikes on youtube. I would gladly help you out with beta and video of anything you're looking to do in the future. You pretty much just followed the crack(s) directly up that north side, there were a couple places where it got steep briefly but nothing too bad --you were in the right place just had to go straight up!
I haven't, but researching this I got the two confused so I know about both. I figured out the route eventually. I just wasn't comfortable with it. Probably would've done it with my canyoneering buddies, but solo with Tina standing at the base watching me....just too much exposure on one side for my comfort.
That sandstone is sketchy for climbing. It has a veneer of looseness that makes it slick as you skid on the very thin outer layer of weathered sandstone. The route would be easy on Sierran granite because you get great friction holds for your feet (if you have proper boots). Turning around always a good idea if it feels too sketchy.
That layer of sandstone is actually pretty solid, plus this hike gets enough traffic to keep it clean. It is a steep final 50 feet or so though, for sure.
The rock was clean and solid. Good friction too. It was just too steep with too much exposure on one side for my abilities. I'm sure plenty of people make it no problem. If I'd been there with my canyoneering buddies (who have rock climbing experience), I probably would have tried it. But not solo with Tina waiting at the base.
Great hike, even if you don't go to the top (or so I'll tell myself). It's a curry pizza place out there. Instead of tomato sauce, they use curry (or maybe infuse curry into the tomato sauce). It was actually pretty good. I'll definitely get it again when we're back.
@@JerryArizona I was yelln at the screen like I was descending that hairy nipple 😆 but have you hiked "halls creek narrows" at capital reef? The googs earth pics look amazing.
@@jacobgates1986 no, but I've looked at it a few times. There's a double arch down that way too that we started to hike but didn't make it because it was getting late. So many places to go back and see.
Really do you know the name of the arch? I also saw a few kayak vids of ppl doing the muddy river run also in the capital reef park. That looks amazing as well. I think a double trip on a weekend would be perfect for both halls and muddy river. I wonder if you need a permit to do kayak trip down the muddy river?
HAHA! I love this comment. There actually is a Molly's Nipple in Utah. Somehow I kept thinking this was that. It's also my girlfriend's name, but keep that on the DL.

👍👍
ah i left that comment before I watched the video -- I have full video of the climb up the nipple, i've just been lax with learning how to edit and post all my hikes on youtube. I would gladly help you out with beta and video of anything you're looking to do in the future. You pretty much just followed the crack(s) directly up that north side, there were a couple places where it got steep briefly but nothing too bad --you were in the right place just had to go straight up!
Molly's Nipple is another cool short steep hike in Hurricane, UT -- maybe you've done that before? it's a good one
I haven't, but researching this I got the two confused so I know about both. I figured out the route eventually. I just wasn't comfortable with it. Probably would've done it with my canyoneering buddies, but solo with Tina standing at the base watching me....just too much exposure on one side for my comfort.
At least they used fresh jalapeños on the pizza!
Seemed like everything they used was fresh. I've tried Indian food a bunch of times and this was my favorite. I'm a much bigger fan of Tai curry.
@@JerryArizona Have you tried the Thai restuarant in Oak Creek Village?
That sandstone is sketchy for climbing. It has a veneer of looseness that makes it slick as you skid on the very thin outer layer of weathered sandstone. The route would be easy on Sierran granite because you get great friction holds for your feet (if you have proper boots). Turning around always a good idea if it feels too sketchy.
That layer of sandstone is actually pretty solid, plus this hike gets enough traffic to keep it clean. It is a steep final 50 feet or so though, for sure.
@@TheMrTsizzlade I was wondering if use had put it in better condition. Still, do not step off route
My Grandma's sister was named Fern. Lol
That was high as hell and how was the Indian pizza? And what is Indian pizza ? 😆
Who’s Molly?
HAHA! I love this comment. There actually is a Molly's Nipple in Utah. Somehow I kept thinking this was that.
It's also my girlfriend's name, but keep that on the DL.
Nothing worse when you get on the boob but no nipple. Haha…. Good choice by turning around. Funny how women can make a good decision without actually going to the precipice
Tina's always been smarter than I am.....
I turned back at that same spot in May 2021, about 40 feet below the summit. The views and scrambling still made it a very worthwhile hike!
Good to see I'm not the only one. That last little bit was definitely a step up in difficulty. Still a fun hike like you said.
