- The most AMAZING place in Canyonlands you've NEVER heard of
Canyonlands National Park is relatively well known. Most people who go to the Moab, Utah area at least make a stop at Canyonlands National Park to see the overlooks at Island in the Sky or to get that iconic photo at Mesa Arch.
And then there's the Needles District. Definitely not the most popular area in the park. When I heard about Salt Creek Trail, no one I talked to knew what I was talking about. The logistics of the Salt Creek Trail were confusing. Permits are required and only go on sale at certain times of the year. The Salt Creek Trail also generally requires a shuttle. And you should probably backpack it. Oh, and then there are bear canisters and water to worry about.
So it sounds like a little too much trouble, huh? Well, as with many outdoor adventures, some of the biggest payoffs require a little more effort than normal. And the Salt Creek Trail is no exception. But it is so worth it. This trip through Canyonlands National Park isn't a backpacking trip. It's an adventure. The first major sight is Kirk's Cabin. This is one of the most well preserved cabins I've seen, including a broken wagon, fireplace and lots and lots of nails, cans, glass and other relics left behind from long ago. No graffiti and no one seems to take anything. It's all there for you to see.
Then you are rewarded with countless ruins. We spotted 7 or more, and only knew about 3 going in. Big Ruin is the largest Native American ruin site in Canyonlands National Park. You can't reach the main site, but there are pottery shards, corn and arrowheads everywhere. You'll surely find a few more surprise ruin sites - including several graineries - as you continue walking to the next major sight; All American Man. All American Man is a red, white and blue pictograph that....well, it looks fake. But it's not. Maybe I should mention here that there are some strange pictographs along this hike. There is a little man with antenna, All American Man and two figures who appear to be in.....all I can think is spaceships. Strange.
After All American Man, you come up to Four Faces. Four Faces is another amazing pictograph set right above yet another ruins site.
Oh, and did I mention the arches? There are nearly as many random arches as there are ruins on this section of the trail. Many were not named on my Gaia.
Then we were at our camp for the night. Luckily there was water just beyond it at Upper Jump.
The next day, we headed to Angel Arch. I won't lie, I was pretty excited. Angel Arch is an enormous natural arch set high up on a cliff. As you can see in the video, Angel Arch appears to have an angel leaning up against one side of it. It's extremely unique. But like many things on the Salt Creek Trail, that's not enough. There is also a stone pillar called Molar Rock at the base of Angel Arch. Honestly, it looks like a heart to me, but I don't get to name it. The combination of Angel Arch and Molar Rock makes for an amazing and other wordly scene, not to mention some really cool pictures.
Then it was back to camp for night two.
Day 3 was mostly walking as fast as we could. The scenery was still spectacular, but we were tired and still had to drive home, so it was heads down and walk forward. We hit Peek A Boo (a cool hole through the rocks complete with pictographs), and then, after a short 3 miles down a sandy road, we were back at the truck.
Canyonlands is amazing. And the Salt Creek Trail gives you some of the most rugged, unique and beautiful sights in the park. If you haven't heard of it, I recommend you check it out. You will not be disappointed.

In 1980, the road to Angel Arch was open to 4x4 vehicles. I took my wife and two young sons, one an infant only weeks old. There was a thunderstorm at Angel Arch, with echos through the canyons. On the way out, as the road bent around the canyon wall, I saw a small cloud of dirt floating in the air indicating an approaching vehicle. It turned out to be 3 guys on dirt bikes. They wore bandannas covering their mouth and noses. I stopped as we slowly moved past each other on the narrow road. Making eye contact with the lead driver, a moment of recognition. He dropped his mask and backpedaled the bike to speak to me through my open window. It was David Conley, a photographer for the Deseret News. I had met him only once before, when I was 15. We both grew up over 1,000 miles away in East Texas. His brother was my scoutmaster, and knowing I was interested in photography, had arranged for David to give me a tour of the Deseret News in Salt Lake City when my family passed through on the way to Yellowstone in 1973. Still the strangest meeting in the strangest place of my entire life.
Crazy story! That place is absolutely incredible. And we definitely could've used that road for the last day. Long walks in the sand on what could be used as a road aren't my thing.
😮 Great story!
Love this story 😊
That was a cool story, what wonderful memories.
what an amazing beautiful encounter❣️🕊❣️
im late, but as a native person and and archaeologist thank you so much for not crawling all over the ruins and touching the petroglyphs!!!
Absolutely. Working on a video about how to treat these sites that I should be releasing in the next few weeks. Glad this place is protected by the permit system. Typically, I don't even say where ruins sites are.
The first steps after getting out of the car after a hike are BRUTAL!! 😂😂😂
At almost 75 years old this hike is not in my plans. THANKS SO MUCH for allowing me along on this video. I really enjoyed it all. I am a new subscriber. Thanks again.
That's awesome. Tina and I are trying to live every day with the assumption that we need to do what we can now, because we won't always be able to. That's actually going to be the theme of my year end video this year. Glad we could take you along.
Thank you for your comment. I didn't even know these were here
The huge heart rock perched atop the column is 😍 too!
You folks really are blessed, In the 1970's we had none of the nice gear, gps, what was that? Our tents were okay, and we could rappel but few did it. We did arches and Druid Arch but you guys are filling in not huge but immense gaps that I can only enjoy through you two, Not cool, but gorgeous, stupendous, stunning, glorious humbling, mind exploding, extravagant, outrageous, befuddling, and more. Not thanks, but gratitude.
I like the immediate “I can fix it” followed closely by slightly less confident “maybe” regarding broken hiking stick.
I walk like that all the time now. Getting old sucks. Falling down steep inclines and nearly killing myself - priceless.
I miss these kinds of hikes. Thanks for sharing.
Absolutely beautiful area. Thanks for sharing the trip!
Years ago we had a permit to 4-wheel on creek bottom. They only let 10 vehicles per day in and we were Number 10! Angel Arch is amazing! I have a photo of it in my house. Thank you for one of the best videos I have ever watched!
Glad you enjoyed it! And that you got to experience the trail. Angel arch is a special place. I'm glad they control it with permits and make it harder to get to.
My hats off to both of you. That's one helluva hike.
Mr. Arizona, that was awesome. I have been hiking the southwest for years, never heard of this spot. Love your videos and thank you for posting these wonderful gems.
It's amazing. Found it by watching the Netflix movie "Figure it out" about the Hayduke Trail.
Love your enthusiasm for the outdoors and respect for the land which protects our natural resources.
Just found your channel a couple days ago and I honestly can't stop watching! I love Utah. Was there last year (so slow with my videos) and want to go back this fall. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks.
I camped on the Colorado River north of Moab not far from there. Two years back... one of the most scenic parts of your country.
Most beautiful and interesting. An area of Canyonlands most of us never see. Thank you
Thanks for taking us along. I've been to Island, Needles and Maze Districts, and when you said you were going to Angel Arch, it reminded me of something from back in the '70s or '80s, which was confirmed when we got there with you. I drove a rented 4-wheel drive back in there, and set up my tent within a short distance of where you were standing. I, however, drove through weeds, rather than hiking through rocks. Re. the Maze, I took the road in to the ranger station, then intended to hike down into the canyon, but chickened out when I realized how easily I could be found all dried up months later. I also got to the Doll House when I was on a 3-day whitewater rafting trip a few years later, and we stopped for a short break at the confluence of the Green and Colorado, and I climbed up a steep cliff to see it in person. That's the kind of scenery you don't get in northern IL, to say the least.
Stunning views. Thank you for the posting
Wish I still had the stamina to do this one...what an incredible hike with SO MUCH to see.......Thanks for the chance to see it.
That is an amazing place! Loved all the ruins but absolutely loved Angel Arch. 😍
Angel Arch was a special place. It was all special, but that place.....something else.
Beautiful landscape and all respect for the ruins.
A great watch! Thank you. 😎👍
Wow, incredible! Thanks for sharing!
When we used to go hiking as a family on vacations we were into jogging too. So we were conditioned for adventures like these. Thank you for showing us this. I never seen it before. It was spectacular!
This was one of our favorite backpacking trips. If you're interested, you'll need to do some research on the permits. They're overly complicated and you have to be ready when they go up because they go quick. Water and temperatures also add to the logistics. But so worth it.
Thank you for an awesome and beautiful video.lots of history.
Can't begin to tell you how much I enjoy these videos. Thank you.
Canyonlands Cooooolesst video ever and your choice of music 🎶 sublime!!!! Thank you both!
Thanks! The scenery did most of the work for me.
Awesome video, spectacular scenery. Thanks so much for sharing!
Wow - beautiful hike! You can't beat those views! thank you for sharing!
You are right. Never heard of this one, but wow! Really enjoyed this one and thought the music paired well with the surroundings.
Love this magical landscape, thanks for the helpful upload and the scenic views! :)
Reminds me of comb ridge, butler wash, and grand gulch south of canyonlands. Trip and fall into ruins, pictographs, and petroglyphs every step you take
Jerry and Tina we just sat down and watched this one on the big tv and loved it . We both were exhausted after watching and totally relate to that first time stepping out of the truck after a big hike . Our toughest to date was flat Iron. Well there was one in the Superstitions that bit us in the back side . 3 mile hike ended up being 11.5 after a wrong turn . May I recommend the Accend hiking poles with cork handles . I have abused mine for over a year . Thank you again!
The Supes are rough no matter what you hike. I'll look into those poles. We've had these for quite a while and they take a lot of abuse. Had an expensive pair of Black Diamond ones, but I immediately left them at a trailhead, so I stick to cheap.
@@JerryArizona I think I paid 49$ or 59$ at REI
Mine are aluminum . I like to do the downhill ski thing on those steep descents ha ha . I have the tension adjusted on the lock screws so that if you put a lot of weight on them they might slide together and inch . So I check them on the way down after Boulder jumping ha ha .
Gorgeous!! It has been on the bucket list for a while. Angel Arch... just beautiful and serene. I think the rock in the foreground was Molar Rock. Very, very cool. Awesome video as always.
Definitely Molar Rock. Looks like a heart to me, but I guess it looked like a tooth to whomever named it. I highly recommend this hike. Just look into the permit system and plan ahead. They're complicated.
I was so happy to find this! Many years ago the park allowed Jeep travel on Salt Creek to within three miles of Angel Arch. It was possible to do this in a day, but we missed most of the ruins you found.
I've heard they let you drive in further a while back. Really would've appreciated that on our way out. The place is absolutely stunning though.
When I was there in 1985, you could four-wheel past The Four Faces (IIRC, the end of the four-wheel road was at a waterfall named Upper Jump). You could also get to within a mile or so of Angel Arch, which, IIRC was up a different fork of Salt Creek. I hiked from the end of the road to All-American Man, but didn't get to the arches and ruins in the upper part of the drainage. It's an amazing place, with the combination of desert canyon scenery and all of the archaeological features.
All American Man struck me as something you might have seen on a Greatful Dead album cover, sort of a psychedelic Uncle Sam, in red white and blue paint.
The "ruins city" and Angel Arch - absolutely amazing & so beautiful. Thank you for sharing your Canyonlands adventure!
I've never seen so many ruins. Or unique pictographs. Or pottery, grinding stones, corn and arrowheads. Or arches, outside of Arches National Park. Angel Arch was a definite high point. It's not a backpacking trip; it's an adventure.
Thank you. Amazing place.
I miss hiking; physical limitations at present; thanks for taking me along! I absolutely enjoyed this trip, you’re responses to this fantastic landscape are so real, your pain is tangible and your responsible land use is inspiring.
Glad you enjoyed. Hopefully you'll get out there soon.
Me too.... thanks for the memories
I don't care for the no dogs sign since I hike with them, still beautiful hike, thanks!!
You are blessed to do all this too!!
Absolutely.
We have got to get backpacking to get deeper into this kind of beauty. Amazing views ! Thanks for sharing, putting on our bucket list 🙌👍🏻
What a beautiful heavenly place! Thank you for sharing!
I love you guys. Thank you for sharing!
So gorgeous. Thanks for sharing that amazing place!
We were absoluletly blown away. The ruins were so amazing but Angel Arch was the highlight for me.
Great video! Love the conversation and descriptions and impressions as you hike and travel!
Great video, stunning views - love the storytelling, well done guys !!
Thanks for taking us out there! And very, very, very well presented! Kudos! Peace be with you both.
Beautiful places, good music along with the video, I have to say I really like the video. Such beautiful places. Thank you for sharing your adventure!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for the compliment.
Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing your adventure. This put a huge smile on my face!
This was really fun to watch. What a beautiful spot. Great filmmaking, thanks for all your hard work!
Awesome Hike! Thank you for taking me along! Appreciate your efforts and reminders to respect the natural beauty! Keep up the great work!
Great content, beautiful views. Thanks for the tour!
You guys are amazing to do that long hike. What wonderful views. Great video.
I really enjoyed this video!! Thank You for sharing your experience! ❤
Accidentally found this video and watched. What a great introduction to your channel! Thumbed up, subscribed and looking forward to more! We like how respectful you are towards your surroundings and hearing explanations about the environment such as the cryptobiotic soil. Nice work!;-)
Thank you so much for such an excellent tour showing us this beautiful place, I paused this and finished streaming on my TV. I am going to put it on my list of hikes to do as I love deeper into backcountry hiking. What is really good is to point out what not to do such as not walking on sensitive areas, look but don't touch, enjoy and preserve. Always good to point out the animal tracks as we are visiting their domain, not claiming it. Great and looking forward to more, great job Jerry!
It's an amazing place. Definitely look into the permit system because it's convoluted. Permits go up in windows (popular season and unpopular - hot - season) twice a year in blocks. So to get ideal conditions, you want to be ready. Not to mention it's very confusing to even find the permits on the website. I ended up having to call to clarify where to find the right link. Best of luck.
Thanks again Jerry, I will certainly work at the permitting and now better understanding on what to expect. Have a great Christmas.
I love Canyonlands and hope to make many return trips. Thanks for sharing this experience.
This is why we plan on moving from Arizona to Utah, it offers more of what we want in our outdoor adventures and we don't want to have to drive back and forth from Arizona to do it. Thank you!!!!
I'm always torn between Utah and Arizona. Now that it's getting into peak hiking season in AZ, it starts to draw me back. But I wouldn't mind living in Page or Kanab, right on the border.....
Good move
@@JerryArizona Arizona has beautiful cactus 🌵 sunsets and nice hiking trails too. Utah is spectacular as well. What I miss in Utah is cactus; would never move from AZ
Thank you for sharing this. It was breathtaking.
I did a three night solo backpacking trip there, it was amazing. Saw tons of evidence of bears, ruins, the petroglyphs, definitely need to return. Thanks for taking me back, and reminding me how spectacular it is. Your videography was very enjoyable.
Love these videos👍👀
I absolutely love that hike! I live in St. George Ut, everyone gets so hyped about Zions but Moab, especially needles area, is the most beautiful of all! Another breathtaking trail is connected to salt creek, called horse canyon. These hikes are hidden gems! Love the content!
It is all beautiful. Utah is spectacular throughout.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed. I'd never been anywhere in Canyonlands but the overlooks, and this section was amazing. Definitely planning to go back.
@@JerryArizona love to hear that! Yeah Utah has a beauty so surreal and unique to anywhere else in the world. To top it off with anasazi ruins. Hope you can make it back soon! I also highly recommend a place called the “San Rafael Swell.” Some of the most mind blowing pictographs you’ll ever see.
@@sentientflower7891 true true!
@@lancekotter927marked thank you for sharing !
This is so well done! What an amazing place, incredible video and editing. I am very glad I found your channel! You got a new subscriber!
Just found your channel and I'm really loving the adventures, this place was amazing!
Thank you for sharing this most amazing place with all of us!
Great video! I have visited Utah each year since 2014 and have seen a fair number of both ruins and pictographs. But the sheer volume you encountered is unmatched.
Definitely. I thought Walnut Canyon (AZ) was filled, but this place was crazy.
Excellent video! I've been enjoying your channel!
Phenomenal - thanks for sharing.
Another kickass video...watching from Mexico. You two are Winning at life....keep enjoying!! Timmy C Arizona
Great work, Jerry. Well done. I’m going!
I was also just out there in The Needles while you were there, and loved the Chesler Park and Squaw Creek/Big Spring loops. Thanks for a great video and I'll now put this route on my To Do list!
It's absolutely mind-blowing. And my first trip to the Needles District; I've added a lot to the list from this area since this trip.
RECORD CLASS VIDEO FOOTAGE! You make it so enjoyable to watch. Thanks so much!
Thanks. The scenery did a lot of the heavy lifting for me on the visuals here, for sure.
Thanks for sharing the adventure... dream of seeing places like that... SCOTLAND👍
An amazing post! I've seen a few of your posts -- thank you for taking us-for those that will never be able to go!! At 20:42 the shot below Angel Arch looks surreal and like another planet. Love all the ruins and the length of the post showing us tons of sites and rock formations! Best, from Colorado!
Thanks! Angel Arch was definitely a highlight in an already highlight-heavy route.
So beautiful - thank you sharing (also like the music).
Well shot excellent video! Hiking+Reality
Magical video. Thank you.
The way you walked at the end of video is how I walk these days due to arthritis
Sticks. The ultimate backup trekking pole.
Definitely a mind blowing hike. Amazing ruins, paintings and arches. Loved every minute of it. I would do it in five days. Thanks for sharing. Be safe!😘🤗🌼🇻🇪
We definitely could've used another day or two. There were side canyons and ruins we didn't get to explore at all. And more pictographs on Day 3 we were too tired to explore. Maybe next time.
Great video guys.loved it.
Love your sense of humor...both of yous.
That was one of your longer videos, loved all of it. Thank you for taking us along. Angels Arch is Amazing. ( i swear you said you were tired of walking ) that was hilarious.
For someone who loves to hike, I can't understand how often I'm tired of walking.
Awesome. Thanks for sharing. I’ve only been to Canyonlands once, plan to go back. I love Get out gear’s blanket.
Such a relaxing and enjoyable video, thanks for taking the time to share the experience. I'm bringing my family to the Moab area next week. We live and adventure all over Alaska, can't wait to see this completely different environment in person.
I absolutely love the desert. Moab, especially deserves more exploration. I didn't even realize Salt Creek existed until I watched the documentary on Netflix about the Hayduke trail. And this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Awesome hike! Been to canyonlands but never that part
It's a great area. I want to get back to the Canyonlands again as soon as possible. There's way too much to explore.
Excellent job! Loved the chill pace of this one. 👍💪 It's crazy to think of how many people used to live in this area long ago. 😮
Been trying to slow down the pace. At least for the hiking videos. I always think the same thing, and we talked a lot about 'what was this place like when it was populated?' So cool to think about.
Loving your video creative skills. Please continue. 🙏
Amazing hike. Utah does not disappoint.
Utah never disappoints!
Thank you for sharing this video. A well done video in an amazing place.
Thanks! The scenery does a lot of the hard work on the video. This place is incredible.
Hello from Ouray CO! Awesome scenery! Thank you very much for sharing this with us!
We have a travel trailer that just arrived. Since most of our local forest service access has closed off now due to our snowfall, we will most likely head out to this UT area for some boondocking and hiking. I will plan to incorporate some of this area into our travels.
Safe travels!
Enjoy, and be safe.
Haha I love watching my friends that live down south freeze in the "cold", let me know next time your up North Jerry we'll do some -30'C snowshoeing!
There is a reason I'm in the SW for half of the winter... 🥶😶🌫️ 🏔🏜☀️😎
I grew up in Illinois and didn't mind the cold. But I've been here way too long. Blood gets thin fast.
Wonderful video.
We had permits for an out and back from Cathedral Butte to Angel Arch but there was a threat of snow at Cathedral Butte for our return and didn't want to get stuck up there so we switched our permit for an overnight on the Lost/Squaw Canyon Loop. Glad I get to see a good video of the trail though!
AWESOME! That's some intense hiking.
It's a great route. Wish we'd had a couple more days.
We took that trip 4 years ago. It was sooooo amazing!! Great seeing it again.
Thank you so much! Never been, but hope to in the future.
thanku for the peaceful music! Video fantastic! thanku!
Following you on Google Earth...What a maze, oh wait, that's on the other side of the river. Seriously, what an incredible maze of canyons, thank you for posting this. I've seen way to little of Canyonlands in my life but have studied it on maps and Google Earth, videos like this are wonderful for someone whose hiking and riding days are past.
Happy I could take you along.
Awesome video. Thanks!
Love your journey. Thnaks for sharimg.
The view from "Not too shabby" cave nearly called song from my chest. Well done felluh.
Wow what a beautiful journey. I love canyon lands. I wish I could spend the rest of my days walking through southern Utah.
Way over 16.000 views , 105 comments. WOW, its about time . congratulations.
Thanks! And thanks for watching for so long. No idea what's going on lately, but I'll take it.
