Hi Jens. Great video my friend. The garden is going to be fun to watch grow. I really appreciate all the work that goes into gardening. Loved watching you measuring the koi, and explaining why some had great growth, and why some didn't. They all look so beautiful, which is a direct result of all your hard work. I dont have an answer as to why some felt rougher than other's, but after looking it up, I would imagine it might be genetics. The other reasons dont appear to be an issue. Hope that helps answer your questions. Thank you for another awesome video.♥️🤗
Key reasons why some koi might feel rough:
Parasites: External parasites like flukes or ich can irritate the koi's skin, causing a rough texture.
Bacterial infections: Bacterial infections can also lead to skin lesions and roughness.
Poor water quality: Ammonia and nitrite spikes in the pond can stress the koi and compromise their immune system, making them more susceptible to skin problems.
Physical injuries: Cuts, scrapes, or abrasions on the skin can feel rough to the touch.
Nutritional deficiencies: Lack of essential nutrients can affect the health of the koi's skin and scales.
Genetics: Some koi breeds may naturally have thicker scales or a slightly rougher texture compared to others.

Thanks for all the information, Chris! That is very helpful and I will check it all out.
I can not wait for the garden to come along. I love gardening and watching the plants grow.

Good growth and beautiful koi Jens. Agree with one comment on here, some males have a rough feel around the face ‘beard’ area during breeding season.

Thank you very much! Appreciate you are watching and you and the other commenter got a point . My koi are starting to get to the breeding time. I haven’t put any salt in, this season. I want to give an other spawning a shot.

I've just finished moving all my koi indoors for the winter while you'll be enjoying the warm Australian summer soon. If you could send me some of the lovely warm weather of yours it would be most appreciated. 🤣Your koi are looking great and some have put on good growth since last time you measured. Just wondering two things, 1) where did you get your measuring scale? (I've seen some on line however the price is ridiculously high.); 2) what were you spraying into the water prior to measuring each koi? It certainly seemed to keep them calm. I wouldn't worry too much about the different feel of the koi unless you see any unusual behaviour. If the slime coat is pretty much the same on all it's likely not parasites or water quality issues however the only way to be sure is to test the water and do some scrapes to check for parasites with a microscope. Fingers crossed you have nothing to worry about. 👍🏻

Thanks Ken, appreciate your information. Some were suggesting the males start to towards breeding season. That might be it. They getting frisky and need to get my spawning spa ready. I will send a bit of our warm weather. 😎. The scale and tub I got from a koi keeper/ hobby breeder in Perth. He has a small koi equipment business on the sidelines and imports all his equipment from China 🇨🇳. Easy for him cause he comes from there originally. It wasn’t cheap either. Cost me $200 . But it was cheaper than from online stores. I was very close to fibreglass my own with a measuring tape embedded in the clear resin. Than I saw this in his garage while picking up filter brushes. So I bit the bullet 😁

were they rough around the gill plate area ? if so they are males and we are entering breeding season, male koi get a sand paper feel around breeding time.

That makes sense. The koi are getting a bit frisky lately since the temps are going up.
