  • Part 36! 1968 VW Radical Custom What Goes Up MUST Come Down 🪟 ⬆️
Ian said it would get weirder .... 👽 👽 Ian and his "envisioning tools" are getting the job done. Ian fabs the window mock up and even makes it roll up and down! All on the fly from his engineering mind.
The saga continues....And Who said kustoms were easy or took under an hour to create? Ian Roussel is home alone on the ranch for a few days and started "Camera on a stick" to showcase the structural aspect of his kustom door.
There are no rules in car customization, and if there was a rule it would be to go as far outside of the box as your fabrication skills can take you. Ian envisioned a simple and radical solution to this style of door opening. He walks himself and Jamie through the process, with pretty satisfying results. This is only the beginning. Come journey with Ian out of this world fully into the outer space of KUSTOMS. 🛸 🛸 🛸 🛸
"Car Building Is Fun! Lets keep it that way."~ Ian Roussel
    The backstory...
Ian has decided to lower this VW Beetle 6 inches to get it to the ground and start radically modifying this beat up 1968 VW Beetle, but like most things that were once going to find the fate of the crusher, he once again proves you can do some amazing things in your garage with some imagination, fearlessness and a willingness to make mistakes as you create. 🥴
His fascination stems from the seemingly limitless customization opportunities for this vehicle. Join Ian on a wild ride through his mind 👽 as he envisions then fabricates his most radical ideas to date.
Ian worked and studied at a bronze casting foundry as a young man, where he learned to create models, armatures, molds and finished sculptural artwork in all mediums and finishes. Ian is fascinated by the artistic process of sculpture. He brings this knowledge to his car customizations, to his TV show audience, and now he brings it to you, his growing RUclips audience.

well played putting that window mechanism together so quickly. Instead of slotting the glass, I think it could pivot at the glass and also pivot where the track mounts to the flat bar. Then whole track can swing back and forth when you go down and up to account for the arc... Thanks for taking the time to ship everything out - love the eyemuffs.

Ian I don't know if you would be interested. I worked at a Fiat dealership in the 70s before I went to the army. The 850and 124 spiders had a cable system that welded into the inside of the doors. Living in Pennsylvania in the winters the cable idler pulley would rust off of the door inside. We used the braze them back in. The first one I did was working fine. I was cranking the window up and down and the service manager came over and said I see you have working. He said come over here and look at the outside of the door. I guess I got carried away with the torch. There was a large burn spot in the paint. I was loosing it. The service manager was a really great guy. He told me to go to the detail shop and get the detail paint gun. He sanded and painted my screw up in no time. I learned a lesson that day to pay attention where I'm putting the torch when brazing

Greetings from South Carolina... just a suggestion...on that top pivot that has to move @3"". make another channel that you can glue to the bottom of the window with a track..with a pivot roller wheel. Like the old school window tracks. That will give you, your movement & ease of resistance?

I pick up a lot of tips when I watch your videos so I will give you one back: If you trim the lower front corner of the window "glas" as much as possible and also swing it inwards a bit, you will get the window even further down. Also decreases the chance of cracking it as sharp corners are more exposed...but...I guess you have already thought of that :)..AND Im only 15 minutes into your video when I write this .😊

Another option instead of slotting the glass would be to use a track with one or two wheels that some cars have that use a register mechanism with an arm to move the glass up and down. The ones I've seen have holes in the glass that allow the track to be bolted to it. A slotted hole in the glass would probably crack the glass during use with just a little side load. Sorry if I seem like Mr. Knowitall. It's just the engineer in me. I've learned some much from watching you work; it's a pleasure to see it in action! Cheers

If you look at a factory window, they have a “C” channel on the bottom of the window and below that they have an open flat “C” channel that moves side to side with nylon wheels. If you do that it will make up for the arc because that nylon wheel can roll back-and-forth while the window mechanism still goes straight up and down that’ll solve any issues you have with the Arc.

The window winder goes in a straight line, and the window goes in a ark, you need a relay arm between the two, just like on the steering on the Jeep,
Door out and tilt could be hidden inside the tube, or full steampunk with rose joints and in one continuous motion, full on display, it all depends on what interior you are going for, i imagine part rat rod, and part steampunk, maybe even a small steering box for each door, with an electric motor, and some extra arms for the tilt.
It might end up being a very heavy door, maybe do some in alu, and make it part of the interior

I commented on another one of your videos little while back that I would love to come, and either work with you, or for you, and I got a reply from one of your subscribers saying, an Englishman in the desert! I had to laugh, because 1: I am a sunworshipper and 2: I’m not originally from England. I’m originally from Africa. So I love the hot weather and especially when it’s a dry heat like you have there. I cannot wait for this bag to be finished because that is going to belong in a motor museum. That is, of course after you take it to SEMA. Please keep up the great work and once again blessings to you and Mrs Ian from England.

If you fix the bottom of the winder rather than giving it a bolt with a pivot point it will bind up. It needs to be able to change angle.slightly. The winder window fixing point will also need to pivot.

I love the videos and was glad to see this one after your break. I build mechanisms for a living and wanted to point out one thing with the window. Because it is pivoting on the one point, everything on the window travels in an arc, not a straight line. You did say the anchor on the window will have to have slop to allow it to move without binding and this is the reason why.

Ian, I think if you use round tube instead of the square tube on the door slide, you could use two electric actuators; one to slide it in/out, the other to rotate it up/down. And the actuators could both could be mounted inside near the tunnel and out of the way, maybe. Just an idea.

The square keeps it square to the door opening.

Working construction, it was necessary to look as many steps forward as possible. With auto fab, Ian makes the process look easy. I wonder how that piece of glass will be set into the door. Looks impossible but Ian already knows, I’m sure. His amazing mind … is amazing.

Ian displays mastery of his trade in ways that I would not even imagine, possible. His ability to imagine possibilities of set ups and functioning are something to behold. It is even difficult for a person like me to follow his conceptualizing and creative processes. Somethimes I have to stop the video and rewind to see how he sequenced all these steps. Love this show!
