    It took me a long time to realize what the night shots in the middle of the video reminded me of:
    Many years ago, my friend and I made the long-distance ski trail (from Schonach to Belchen) in the Black Forest. It was the middle of January, we had loads of snow and light backpacks because we stayed in huts and inns. After the arrival in Schonach we got off much too late, it was dark half an hour after we started. First I was annoyed, because this was not planed and we had no headlamps. But after a while the full moon in the cloudless sky was so bright that we could read the signs on the trail. Totally alone and without problems we skied through the quiet, white winter forest. After an hour we saw our first lodging lying in the moonlight, the smoke oozing out of the chimney and the windows kindly lit. It was absolutely wonderful, I have never seen anything more peaceful and heartwarming.

    The hardest part of seeing a new “Erik Normark film”’ pop up is not being in a quiet place to enjoy it. :) Can’t wait to settle in this evening and watch, when the light is low and the house is still. Thank you again for all your hard work putting this together for us!

    Boy o boy, you dont say too much but when you do its brilliant, you made more sense in the few words you said in the first 1 minute and 30 seconds of this video than most " survival" you tubers do in all there videos combined. Totally gobsmacked by it and its so true. Absolutely classic. Thank you.

      While I agree with you to a point, this isn't a survival video. What Erik does is a fantastic way of showing the brilliance of winter camping, one of my favorite things to do. Survival videos shows... well just that, trying to survive in nature with our basic human skills, many of whom lost those, which is also another one of my favorite things to do. I sometime laugh when I see people with all their electronic equipment in nature trying to figure things out. But then realize maybe that's what they need. I'm just glad I don't. This definitely was a simple video fantastically done.

    • @tonydean2541

      @@tomasn3666 I did put the word "survival" in inverted commas. I know this video is different from the usual stuff, most of the other videos i dont take too seriously. I totally agree with you otherwise. I love Eriks stuff. I enjoy the lack of music and talking just the sounds of running water, wind, fire etc, the natural sounds. It almost makes you feel like youre there. Great stuff.

    One of the best parts of your films is the excellent sound. And when it is quiet, you know for sure how quiet it is in those backcountry places... The sound of one person in the terrain.

    "Realizing our own insignificance", is an excellent way to phrase the experience. I remember sitting on a small boulder one night in the Mojave Desert, listening to the wind, and realizing that in the grand scheme of things, I was just like one of the billions of grains of sand that surrounded me, or one of the millions of stars looking down on me. When one can reduce everything to only the sound of the wind, and one's own thoughts, then the intrinsic nature of Nature can be savored and appreciated.
    Love your videos, Erik! You always tap into the source of why so many of us gravitate toward the far and away.

  • @kensign1000
    @kensign1000 4 года назад +1

    Those were some pretty profound words at the beginning Erik. I grew up next to a wooded area and I saw it abused and I saw the entrance to it washed away so that the four-wheel Intruders could no longer gain access to the area. I remember studying that with my dog one afternoon and realizing that we live within nature. It is not the other way around although it can be comforting at times to think that. But it is delusional plain and simple. Nature always wins and survives in the end.

    One thing I like about camping, particularly solo camping, is that sensation of alertness. If you’re alone in the wilderness, your senses adjust to the environment and you develop a much more intimate relationship with your surroundings.

    Dude, SO true, and so well stated. No matter how stressed or depressed I get in the crazy “civilized” world, stepping out for even a day or two (or 12) into nature, and in solitude, truly is a healing experience. It is a reminder that we are part of a greater being; nature, earth, the real world. As for your videos, I applaud not only the great footage but the concise vocal intervention which only compliments the true focus, the natural environment (as opposed to the typical youtube selfies). Bravo!
