Removing the silver shielding from the trackpads is a real hazard. I cut myself like 6 times and one of them was pretty bad. The edges are ridiculously sharp. Also, I burned a part of my OLED screen with a heat gun. Still works but looks funky. I should've just used a hair dryer.
I followed this guide slowly and carefully, the difficulty was not as hard as i expected provided you are methodical and have plenty of time to do it. That being said i have found after installation that now non of my face buttons or triggers are working. after following the video a second time i still have not found out what i have done wrong. Hopefully valve will be able to help me diagnose the issue.
i did a clear emerald green replacement yesterday; it looks genuinely amazing (and i managed not to break anything haha), i'm so happy! great guide! a friendly suggestion though: please extreme rate, please sort / organise / mark / label your screws a little bit better or give screws of certain types certain colours, as the torx screws look way too indistinguishable in the video, even with the picture for reference that you show. more often than not i could not figure out what screws to use (in terms of size) and could only guess - which worked out fine, so i guess it's just a minor nitpick - but until everything was done it gave me HUGE anxiety. i must say though, massive credit for including so many spare screws and adhesive stickers. great move on your part!
I repair gameboys and ds's in my free time as a hobby, would you say I should be able to get the screen out of the shell without breaking it? How difficult was it and what temp did you use on your heat gun if you used one? Also do your touchpads still feel the same sensor wise? I really want to do this mod but my steam deck is like my baby 😅
@@slurmp2536 well i can't say i had extensive prior experience in doing things like this; never had done any physical repairs or mods to any of my other devices but despite that it went well, so i'd say it's very much doable, especially since you have some general practical experience with somewhat similar devices. i set the heat gun to 80°C; in the video you can see they set theirs to 100°C but i was a little scared to go that far. in hindsight i think that would've been fine. they recommend not heating it for more than two minutes at a time and i'd stick to that personally. the screen gave me no issues, the track pads were a little trickier. maybe because i used less heat the adhesive didn't soften up well enough, but it was quite difficult. had to hold on to diagonal corners and press into the centre of the track pads with my thumbs / slightly twist the cover around quite a bit before i could pry the main pieces out with the spudger. before you go for the track pad replacements, you should notice that the replacement covers have a completely even texture while the original covers have a texture that is not 100% even, so there will be a slightly different feel to them afterwards. but they work absolutely fine and when the deck is powered on and they vibrate it's not even that noticable tbh. honestly it depends on what you're going for: i bought playstation button replacements for the steam deck; those are black, so i left the original directional buttons in as well, so having black track pads would've worked well too i think, optics wise. your deck, your decisions, haha. i would recommend backing up your data though *just in case*. if you cannot afford things breaking / buying replacements / repairing things / having the repairs done by someone else, i genuinely would not recommend doing this. personally i thought that if i break something i will repair it or try to contact valve and ask if they do repairs - they certainly wouldn't do it for free since this isn't covered by a warranty but i could imagine they're cool enough to help a fella out with repairs for a small fee. heck, even nintendo repaired my 3DS' C-stick when a younger cousin broke it and it only cost €40 (in 2015). granted, i'm no expert on this topic so take it with a pinch of salt, but i'm sure there are options if something does go wrong. you probably know more than me in that regard since you're already into doing repairs on other handhelds, so i guess there isn't much i can tell you there that you don't already know haha. good luck in any case (pun intended), hope it goes well if you decide to do it! i absolutely think it was worth the money and effort.
@@スターストームリーフ so I caved and bought the glow in the dark shell with white buttons and the clicky kit after reading your detailed reply. I appreciate the insight and helpful tips! omg THIS. Who thought a picture of the OG/new screws would be enough lmao? I literally had to just take a guess (and for suuuure have used the wrong screws multiple time). Great guide. Everything is super detailed - aside from this part that just feels like a massive after thought sadly :')
What make's the shells LCD or OLED compatible? What modification would have to be made to make the LCD shell fit the OLED model? I really want the Translucent Bluebell :\
I don't want to go back and watch, but I think you skipped the step where you put in the tiny clear plastic piece that goes in the LED light hole. I finished and just have an empty hole there now 🙃 I will not take it apart again to put the piece in! But great work, I have a new white and gold steam deck oled 😎
@@ccdani2 it was not too bad. Like someone said, before heating the screen make sure you remove the analogs or you could melt them and they also get in the way of removal. Also watch out for the touchpad haptics, when cutting off the black glue around the cap the metal around it will absolutely cut you up if you aren't careful
Some great people on Etsy, I did my own switch oled and will be taking on my steam deck next :) it’s just all about patience but I’d do yours for $100 if you covered shipping haha
For those that have done the GITD case swap, Does the quality feel like that of OEM? Better? Worse? I have my OEM and GITD extremerate and I checked random locations of the extremerate vs OEM pieces and they seem to be pretty much spot on with thickness throughout. As everyone knows the hand feel can be different after fully assembled so just looking for some opinions before I take the time to body swap.
it feels about the same in the hand. but i think the quality is just a bit worse than oem. I made a small crack in the plastic between the screen and the left trackpad unintentionally
I have the clear shell on LCD model and an OLED shell on the way. I've had the clear shell installed for over a year. Zero issues with discoloration or cracking or anything. It's pretty much perfect.
I want to order a white one but I have heard that they discolour and that's what is holding me back , I am not sure if they are still using the soft paint or if the shells are actually colour injected
@@ccdani2 same which is the only reason why I haven't purchased one yet. I guess we'll have to wait a couple months because I don't know about you but i'm not tinkering with my screen if the shell isn't of good quality
it's not tho, you just have to plug it out. it fits very tightly, granted, so you have to work on it a little with the pick (i.e. slowly move it out of the socket). and same process in reverse when putting it back together
I ordered mine yesterday and was looking all over RUclips for a guide, thankfully this got uploaded right on time ! Thank you very much
You are most welcome!
Going to be doing this mod on Saturday and super nervous. Looking forward to putting up the video review after. Wish me luck haha😅
With you luck!

Thanks for your suggestion!

just got mine and about to do it
I needed this video for the oled as I wanna do a full replacement but have never ever done this before. I’m scared to break something lmao
I just did it. Patience gets it done. Took about 4ish hours and the hardest part is getting the screen off. The suction cup they give you isn't great!

Congrats on the successful installation! Did you mean the tiny piece at 13:04?
Do the touchpads have to be swapped or can we just use the OEM black touchpads?
You can use the stock ones :)
I plan on keeping my OEM black touchpads. Don't wanna risk it when I could just put a sticker on it lol
I can’t find the 4 screws for the trackpad silver shielding, anyone having this issue? 33:16
Same here... Building it now and hoping for an answer soon
Nevermind, they were packed in the same bag as the screwdrivers. I used superglue instead for one set and that worked fine too!
Just found them with the tools that came with it!
Clear red plzz!! Thats what i had gotten for my LCD steam deck
When will you release a plain shells for oled? Like what you have with the LCDs?

its coloured plastic

do you guys have the shells for rog ally?
If I want to keep my original touchpads do I need to still remove the adhesive and other steps?

All the available colors now are not painted, so the discoloration will not gonna happen theoretically
@ExtremeRate that's great! so the white one is pure white plastic with no soft touch paint applied?
