    What do Jinx and Vi’s tattoos represent? Gears are uncharacteristic for Vi, who is not a scientist or engineer. And what about Jinx’s clouds? These aesthetic changes are part of the transformations we see these categories go through in the years they are separated. That separation is the key to understanding these tattoos and the meaning behind them.
    Forgot to mention Vi’s “VI” tattoo btw… or maybe I’m just stumped?? What could it possibly represent??

    Yeah, it kind of kills me how even though Jinx was told that Vi was dead, she still got her blue smoke signal tattoos. Like she was still holding out hope that she would get a chance to use it someday.

      That could be said about Vi to, the last thing she saw before she was throw in prison was Silco standing over powder and to Vi’s perspective Silco most likely killed her so Vi was in prison all those years taking all that abuse and suffering to get back to powder not even 100% sure she was still alive but like you said the hope she would get a chance to see her again kept her going this show is literally so amazing.

She was so excited and wanted to show Vi, of course the consequences of the explosion is what ultimately haunts her.

      Ok I think the blue tattoos represent trauma form the day IT happened, like when Vi gave her the flare “light it up and I will find you” she always wanted to be found. The second part is basically what you said but not amazement more of the trauma she carries form that day and the memory’s she can’t take back. Because remember a 9 year old can’t get tattoos meaning she would be at least 15 when she got them 6 years after that day, and she is haunted by that day that traps her in time so I think those tattoos are guilt that she carries along with the hope of getting Vi back.

      @@pandora8354 I don't think Zaun has rules about 9 year olds not being allowed to get tattoos :P I also do think she got the blue clouds from the explosion that killed everyone, atleast, for me that would be such a painful but beautiful way to carry around her trauma and at the same represent the first time one of her inventions actually worked. It seems like both an iconic transformation or (re)birth and incredibly sad, haunting tattoo. To me, it basically represents the birth of Jinx or the 'gravestone' of Powder on one side of her body.
      Something I've also been thinking about is how Powder has one braid, and Jinx has two. BUT as Jinx she has one in the front and one in the back in quite a few shots. To me that symbolizes that she still has both the Powder side and the Jinx side. I'm gonna rewatch the show just to be sure of this, but whenever Jinx is more Powder-y the braids are 'uneven'. Whenever she's Jinx or being in her Jinx character, they're usually both on the back. I don't know for sure though, might also just be gravity.

    I'd say clouds relate to Jinx's lifestyle. She's not bound by rules or morale and it's also like she is in a haze constantly.

      And yes, Vi has clouds on top of her mechanism tattoo. Clouds can mean fog/haze which means confusion. But they can also mean she's hiding something. Her feelings or something like that.
      It could also be quite literally steam coming from the mechanism and has nothing to do with symbolism and is just used by artists to show a relation between Vi and Jinx.
      Also notice that Vi's clouds look calm and once again fit the overall brutal theme of the tattoo while Jinx's clouds seem to be affected by wind and look like child's drawings. I think it's also a symbol of Vi being strong, coldblooded and mature and Jinx being the opposite of it.

    Her minigun fires pink tracers and emits pink flame/energy. I suspect we will see her LoL charachter's pink shell casing tattoos in season 2, representing the moment she killed her adoptive father Silco. Extrapolating, the blue smoke likely represents the moment she lost Vi, Vander, Mylo and Clagger.

    A few people pointed out that in LoL Jinx also has pink bullets as a part of her tattoo design. The speculation is that she’ll add them in the second season. I wouldn’t be so sure about that, in Legends of Runeterra (card game based on LoL) Jinx doesn’t have pink bullets. LoL is the original, of course, but it still shows that bullets aren’t guaranteed to be a part of Jinx’s character.

    It's hard to say for sure unless we get an unambiguous reason from one of the writers, but I think this conclusion is wrong for a few reasons.
    Jinx's tattoos are much more likely to represent the explosion that killed her family. Why? Because in the game she also has pink bullet tattoos, and if she adds those in s2 then they would obviously represent the way Silco dies. It's very intentional on the artists' behalf to not give s1 Jinx the pink bullets yet.
    Vi doesn't have to be a technician to admire machinery. She has robotic gauntlets and she famously fought the punching machine in the arcade. This is a world where everything steampunk is cool, so seeing yourself as a machine would be right up Vi's alley. In fact, her tattoos literally mirror her steampunk exoskeleton that her in-game model has. Can you relate that back to Powder? I guess. But that's kind of a stretch when all the machinery in the world has a steam or smoke byproduct.

    • @feduckil9238
      @feduckil9238 2 года назад +81

      I would argue that Arcane’s writers don’t do anything without a reason. So saying that Vi got the gear tattoos just because she admires machinery, when it’s not shown anywhere else in the show (except in relation to Powder), is discrediting the writing a bit. I’ve seen another comment saying that Vi’s design represents her fascination with power, and that does track. Although, I don’t think it has to be in contradiction with the tattoos symbolizing her love for Powder.
      Same with Jinx. Tattoos can have multiple meanings at the same time. Your explanation of her tattoos absolutely has a place to be. But I also think it isn’t a coincidence that the flare that Jinx intentionally kept for years (so it had a lot of meaning to her) contained blue smoke. And again, as mentioned by another comment, it could represent sea foam, symbolizing her love for Silco in his relation to polluted waters of Zaun. None of these interpretations contradict each other, they all are equally important to Jinx.

    • @lockekappa500
      @lockekappa500 2 года назад +32

      @@feduckil9238 So odd for people to say that Jinx's tattoos represent the explosion that night, because I thought it was blatantly obvious it's pointing towards the flare that she uses in Ep 6. Like it almost seems hamfisted it's such a direct comparison. I get that all of these people are having their own interpretations, which is great, but honestly Schnee's interpretation best represents the parallel between their two tattoos, and we all know Arcane is about dualities.

    • @feduckil9238
      @feduckil9238 2 года назад +14

      @@lockekappa500 Again, I think both explanations can be true at the same time. The explosion has played a huge role in her life, and it bears similarity with the tattoo design. We also know that Jinx tries to accept that event as a part of her, as seen by her adopting the name - Jinx. So it makes sense that, among other things, the blue smoke symbolizes that fateful explosion.
      Though, I do recognize that singling out the interpretation that Jinx and Vi both independently decide to show their longing for each other through tattoos makes it more poetic.
      Also, as a side note, how did Jinx know the colour of the smoke in the flare before ever using it?

    • @lockekappa500
      @lockekappa500 2 года назад +24

      @@feduckil9238 I guess Im more inclined to agree with Schnee's take because of the fact that both of them state to each other in episode 9 that they were both the reasons why they fought to stay alive. Tattoos seem like the most likely reminder to someone of a reason to live.
      Not to mention Powder shudders and tries to distract herself from that night constantly. Anytime she is reminded of it she goes off and gets emotional. "I keep seeing them, that night." Seems odd to remind yourself of a night that obviously haunts you so much. You'd think she'd have a reaction to her own tattoos in the same manner that she had when she tried to use the Hexgem again.

    I never had doubts about what Jinx's tattoos could mean. I think is easy to think/see where they come from and it's beautiful. Sad, but beautiful.
    Vi's tats however were a little bit of a puzzle to me. My first impression was that because the show has some steampunk aesthetics it made sense for Vi to use gears and stuff. The blue clouds were obviously a nod to Jinx/Powder from the begening. So no questions there for me. The sisters have matching tats and that's pretty neat.
    Now that I watch this I can agree with your reasoning behind Vi's machinery tattoos. But I think there could be something more behind them.
    I do realize my thought could be farfetched though. Recently I was reading about the different hextech weapons and artefacts in the LOL wiki and I read that the prolonged use of the Atlas Gauntlets (Vi's signature weapon) causes skeletal damage to the user. In the game Vi is pretty much always (or most of the time) using the gauntlets and seems to wear some kind of exosuit. This make me think Vi experiences the skeletal damage in the game. So I thought Vi's tattoos could be foreshadowing of her skeleton becoming weak with the passage of time and the use of the hextech gauntlets in Arcane.
    The machinery tats going from her neck to her whole back and arms make me think of a mechanical skeleton. And I wonder if the design goes even along her legs as well?
    I could be wrong and the tattoos could be all about Powder, who knows?

      I've been wondering about this... Because I found it odd that both their body art had the same motif.
      And, arguably, I'd agree that the blue puffs in Vi's tattoo are representing of Powder (and, incidentally, the hope she's still alive and wandering the the streets of zaun, as they do all over her tattoo - unlike claggor and mylo, who are fixed).
      I like the thought that the blue puffs in Jinx's body art are representing of the flare - but I'm not sure they would have known the flare's colour before setting it off?...
      I'm wondering if Jinx's tattoos are, like @beastmonger says, are a reminder of Powder. It isn't until after Vi's return that Jinx lets go of Powder completely. Perhaps the tattoos were her way of holding on to her past.

    A scene early in episode 1 caught my eye. Once the gang broke into Jayces apartment, Vi was the only one who immediately went to look at the books and writing on the wall -- intellectual academic stuff she def doesn't understand. It struck me as strange bc Vi wanted to do this job and get a big payout -- why didn't she immediately run to the shiny gold trinkets. I think it's great foreshadowing of Vi's lore. Would love to hear your thoughts about it.

    Jinx’s tattoos seem to represent both the hope Vi gave her in the form of the flare and the despair she caused and later became known for.

    I always thought Jinx cloud tattoos were were something cultural something to do with the wind goddess Janna, she was once Zaun's primary deity. Also that Vi's gear tattoos were just a cultural respect and admiration for machinery and engineering. I theories that both got inked due to the grief they felt at the loss of their family, but the actual tattoo's were cultural.

    Something also about Jinx's, that I saw in another analysis: She is fire, with all the explosions and stuff; while Silco is water, with all his methaphors after being drowned, and his fascination for marine beasts. Silco wants to be like Jinx, fire, so he is shown to wear redish clothes; while Jinx wants to be like Silco, water, therefore her tatoos resemble water.
    I actually like both of this analysis, probably both of them are true!

    This is funny to me cause in LoL lore Vi was a mechanical genius. Even repurposing a mining golem's arms into the prototype gauntlets that she used before getting the ones we see in game. So this tattoo for the show is geared towards Powder/Jinx but is actually noting a trait that they both shared in the game.

    When the Flare went up and I saw it's color I almost instantly got the shills, not because of the Song or Powders yearning for her sister but because it hit me that the blue clouds are an extension of her tattoos. It's like Powder turned herself into this ever burning blue flame with them, projecting outward and figuratively screaming 'I'm here, Find me!'.
    My Headcannon for Vi's tatoos was that she had to become more than a person in prison to survive, that she had to turn herself into something that doesn't know pain and cannot be hurt. It correlates somewhat with her fighting style, in that she uses her high pain tolerance to overcome her naturally weaker physique in fights against opponents that are physically bigger and stronger than her.
    But your theory is insanely good and makes total sense. Of course Vi would mirror Powders decision with their tattoos and the meaning behind them. They always draw strength from each other.
    And Damn, the Jilco fans hate it when it's just about the Sisters and their love for each other. Constantly trying to shove Silco in there, no matter how contrived.

    I have a theory about why VI got a tattoo of her name on her cheek. My best guess is that she did it because in prison they give you a number instead of a name. She is a really emotionally strong, stubborn character; she got sick of being dehumanized. Her name of her face is an act of spite and defiance against the prison complex. It’s like a big middle finger. It's like she is saying “Look at me! Look at my face. I'm a person; I have a name. My name VI!”

    Another detail I saw someone else caught, was that the design in the game for jinx has blue clouds/smoke AND PINK BULLETS. I think the blue clouds also symbolize the tragedy that occurred when she blew up the factory when trying to save Vander, getting herself tattooed with them is kind of like embracing the tragedy, embracing how it's shaped her, and while she's still very evidently effected and mourning over it, like when she says "It was a mistake" after getting flashbacks. She acknowledges that it happened, she doesnt really move on or confront it directly until ep 9.
    I believe the situation will likely be similar after Silco's death, another tragedy that SHE CAUSED. Tattooing herself as like a reminder maybe? I hope if she gets a new character design for s2 or her s1 design gets altered, i hope we'll get to see the bullet tattoos so i can cry myself to sleep more ^^

    I’m pretty sure VI’s tattoos were actually a design change. In the ‘Warriors’ video for Vi you see that she has actual machinery connected to her gauntlets to make them easier to lift because at the time Vi had a more feminine build. They ended up changing that so they switched the machinery to tattoos and gave her a more muscular build so she’s using her strength to use the gauntlets instead of gadgets.

  • @RagingRaygun

    Or hear me out here, Vi has an overall steampunk aesthetic so cogs and machinery tattoos go great with that.
