  • With my dog, Cali the Golden Retriever, I start my forest garden, hacking a vegetable plot into the banks along a beaver creek while collecting sod and moss for the roof of a log cabin in the Canadian wilderness.
In the second half of the video, we continue paddling up a river in Ontario, Canada, fishing and experiencing close encounters with moose cows and new born calves.

So true. The restlessness of everyday life in the midst of society is tireing after a while.
To head back to nature is relaxing and soothing.... like filling up a battery.
Those videos are always a relaxing moment to get away.

Hey Shawn, If you find the soil to be to acidic, you can dump the ash from your stove in the garden. This will bring down the acid level.

Elevated square foot nursery is the way to go. Great TV show as always. It's amazing that people can produce shows like these nowadays, but 20 years ago this would have taken a staff of 10-20 people once you consider editing, filming, travel, producing and then finding somone to actually put it on TV. YT is an amazing thing.

It really warmed my heart and encouraged me to see that he has so many young people following him! He has the venue to teach young people SO MUCH…..way beyond building a cabin, etc.....about what it takes to be SUCCESSFUL as a person. I know he's teaching me a thing or two, and I'm 62!

Hi, I´m argentinian and live in Buenos Aires - somehow I bumped into your videos and have been watching them every since, I was attracted to the fact that all this was in Canada, where I live for a couple of years in Montreal - it was a good experience, although I must admit that having lived in Brazil many years and moving from there to Canada I found the cold weather to be extreemly harsh - surely if I´d lived there longer I´m sure I would have adapted. Still the highlight of my living there was that my husband and I crossed Canada from Montreal to Vancouver in the fall and returned crisscrosing the border with the US ... was just an amazing trip. Well, maybe all this was why I latched onto your videos, obviously always attracted to nature, wilderness , wild life and so on. I am not going to build my own log cabin - although I am slowly taking all the steps to move into a motorhome as my home and start moving - so in a way being self reliant is obviously part of my plan, although not quite in the same way. I´d like to thank you sooo much for all that you share and give of yourself,in time and commitement as well as your experience which is truly wisdom - you walk your talk! Cooking is a passion of mine and quite surprisingly I have learnt so much watching the simplicity with which you put together quite healthy food that also seems to be delicious ... I´ve actually tried putting food together as you do and have been quite happy with the results; and so many more little details I pick up as I watch the videos which I can then transfer into my life back here and also listening to the things you share when you talk ... good advice. I´m 66 years old and I believe my more adventurous can really identify with alot of what you share and then translate it into what makes me tick ... driving being one! ... well I just thought I´d share my experience with what you share. I do tho have one observation ... I´ve wondered alot about the meaning of self reliance - and some how I can´t not think that it seems to be so much more than just being independant? ... but also to know with whom to connect with for knowledge and wisdom? a self reliant network seemed important - could you mean by self reliant someone who has used the information and knowledge and brought into reality, having thus experience and wisdom on whatever? just wondering .... as I go along ...

Raised beds and mounds are the best way to grow in old beaver meadows and bogs. Not to incriminate myself, but In my younger days I used to grow a lot of illicit plants in places just like that. I’d use the soil there with a couple cups of lime, add in extra peat, and rabbit manure. That base would work for corn beans and squash. Add in some pot ash from the wood stove.

I just discovered this channel day before yesterday {today is June 2, 2019}, and this is ALL I've been watching -- in truthfulness, binge watching! -- ever since. I had the hour and a half video of the building of this cabin come up in my Recommends, which is pretty unusual 'cuz I NEVER watch these kinds of videos. But my curiosity led me to go ahead and watch that FIRST-of-now-many video, and WOW! Lol I'm HOOKED....HARD! I'm 62 yrs old woman and am completely disabled [THANKS Big Pharma and Drs who don't care about screwing up a person's quality of life forever!!], so chances of me EVER being able to even SEE such an absolutely BEAUTIFUL and MINDFUL way of life up close and personal are next to zero, zilch, ain't gonna happen. SO.....I will LIVE VICARIOUSLY through SHAWN and CALI -- who is DEF the CUTEST PUP ON RUclips, btw -- and the rest of his family and friends. It is just heartwarming to know that SOMEONE -- ESPECIALLY someone with a high-caliber set of ethical standards for living that Shawn OBVIOUSLY possesses -- is following their heart's desire, and it's not at someone else's expense.
    THANK YOU, Shawn, for everything you are doing. You're doing a LOT MORE here than building a cabin, etc. You are TEACHING people how to think differently about SO MANY aspects of their life! Blessings to you and your loved ones...including Cali, of course! Last night I bought one of your shirts with Cali on it! I just LOVE that sweet girl❣ {can't wait 'til the shirt gets here!}

I stumbled upon your channel at 3:20am when my mind wouldn't stop. Watching you dig up moss and dirt was comforting, the sound of water and Cali jumping into the creek - so serene.
I watched your other videos & one thing hit my core, "what do we truly want to do".
I'm still in the rat race, CEO of 3 companies and employing over 5K people. Initially, my passion was to help people help themselves and I created my companies so people can have jobs. I'm a successful single mother, and I feel good about my accomplishments and now, my son is also helping me. But, is this what he wants to do? I love helping people but at what cost? I'm in & out of chiropractor's, massage therapists and acupuncturist's offices to cure my several ailments which I know stems from stress.
I don't want to pass the rat race onto my son. And I'm ready to get off the train. Life is too short. I figured I have another 25 + years more to live on earth and you got me thinking that the rat race shouldn't be a legacy to be passed onto our children.
Thank you for your channel, Shawn. You gave me some things to consider & helped me want to change my ways positively.
BTW, what got me watching your videos was Cali. I love how happy she is. I think I'm going to adopt a dog or 2.

Wow once again super nice mixture video. You and the Baird brothers compliment each other in hard work, and ventures that you are interested in and, with such great video editing that you both do. Not to mention you three do great camera captures, as Doug Linker has done as well in his filming. Cute as a button Cali having fun while trying to stay cool while waiting for winter coat to thin out. Wow great planning on the choice of growth, and why. Hahaha Cali building more muscles with carrying all that mud on her tail. Cali will sleep well tonight more so. Wow more back breaking work with the sod backpack. Quicker then a pulling/pushing a wheel barrow or wagon up hill. Thanks for filming the parts that suck for you in working hard in the rain and mud portaging. Keeping it real in taking the time and effort to film in the rain and trudging through all the mud, also made for great captures that are, so beautiful and calming for the fans. I know you all slept well with all the hard tiring work. Kind of, sort of, a break on your body, from all the hard work you do (minus the slippery muddy portaging, and fighting the mini rapids). BTW awesome make shift refrigeration find!!!

What you could do by the cabin is build a slightly elevated platform from the ground cover it with old windows and plant salad which would be fine. Tomatoes will grow fine as well. Probably potatoes too. All your food waste should go into a compositing pile . Use that to give your soil a jump. Also planting raspberries or rhubarb should be good too.

Had another thought: consider planting berry bushes. They take a couple years to get going, but if you're looking into longterm sustainable agriculture, berry bushes are fantastic for that. Also investigate whether hazel or oak will grow in your area; hazel trees can start producing nuts as soon as 2-3 years into growing and most people find the nuts tasty, plus hazel can be coppiced (cut down to the stump, allowing them to regrow again on 5-year cycles), providing you with materials for crafting, weaving, fence materials, hardwood for kindling, so on and so forth. Oak acorns require lengthy soaking & water changing to get out the bitter tannins (unlike hazelnuts), but produce a very nutritious, high-protein flour once processed.

A lot of hard work doing that ... Have you considered putting a thin layer of dirt & seeding it with creeping thyme? ... I'm hoping to get my garden in by next weekend - we've had so much rain, on the few nice days I ended up getting the brush cleaned of deadwood & dug up around a cut tree trunk adding some perennial plants that come up each year so there will be next to little work that has to be done to it ... If you cut some of the dirt off the grass on top of the sauna, you can use it to plant some herbs for cooking or to grow some fresh lettuce or a couple of tomato plants for tomatoes in the fall at the cabin ... When I plant my garden, I always ask God to water it for me at night - it's way too much work to get to water it without a long enough hose ... anything worthwhile will survive ... Shawn, I'm just trying to make your day a little easier for you - that's a big roof & a whole lot of heavy weight to carry on your shoulders, you need to find a way to lighten that load ... you got a 4 wheeler to go a certain distance, add a sled to the back to put the grass on ... I laugh everyday when I see people doing the same things I already learned - I figured out my own way to make a heavy job easier, I know you will too ... SMILE - life really does get easier & even more enjoyable when you retire ... LOL ... I always love your videos ... I even found an easier way to garden with a whole less work & I LOVE to garden ... Have a Great WEEKEND! It's cloudy here right now & looks like we might get rain - again ... the ground is already soggy from all the rain we've had in the past 2 weeks ... Tell your wife I said hi ... You really are doing a great job!

Yes, try blueberries and rasberries, chock full of vits and they will love the soil there. Your videos are truly fresh air to the soul. Meantime, we have some serious floods and off and on dangerous storms and tornados north of us. Keep a good thought, especially for folks in OK, and my area too.

With the deer and moose you would probably have to fence it in right? Raised beds so you can add the best soil and control moisture somewhat might work maybe?

Watching your videos I'm always reminded of the term " blessing in disguise". You live the good life and have definitely been blessed, but it all came after losing your business and being at a very dark point in your life. It really speaks to the strengths we all carry if only we would just take the leap of faith. Loved the seeing all the spring wildlife. I agree with the comment about raised beds, would give the option of moving it closer in to the cabin and away from wildlife "munchers". So enjoyed this video!!

An alternative in your area for gardening might be to establish some containers or raised beds close to the cabin/kitchen area. That way, you can observe your plants more frequently and be better able to manage soils and such. In Ontario, water management shouldn't be a huge issue. Besides rainfall, runoff from roof surfaces can be used with a rain barrel or two to supply needed water.
Your canoe trip reminds me of a similar one I had many years ago where we decided to run rapids rather than portage on our way back. We holed one canoe 30 mi from the landing but a quick patch got us back safe and sound. Fishing was poor that year too. It was too early in the season to make good catches of fish. Your trout look great!
    Thanks for the vids!

I will second that. Use Larch or Douglas pine, they will last for a long time. Also a good trick is to raise the lowest frame up on a foundation of flat stones. I am looking forward to seeing how you will do with the veggie garden. Keep up the good work and stay safe Shawn. Cheers from Denmark :)

@@UglehyttenI've not heard of Douglas pine, but I have heard of Douglas fir, so I googled it, and the internet says "Douglas fir trees, which are also called red firs, Oregon pines, and Douglas spruce, are not actually true fir trees, pines trees, or spruce trees. The scientific genus name Pseudotsuga means “false hemlock,” alluding to another kind of tree that Douglas firs are similar too." Are these the same as Douglas pine, you think?

@@Uglehytten Hi Martin. I don't know if I'm correct. I'm from Idaho, US. Here we have some Douglas fir. I do not know if it is the same tree. There are some variations of this tree, I think. I am seriously not an expert, bare så du forstår. But I do know I love the Douglas fir, either as a house plant or as a tree. I've seen them both here in Boise, Idaho, and they are wonderful trees to me as a plein air painter. Tak igen, Martin. Jeg vil besøge Danmark! I hope my Danish is ok!

Shawn, I would suggest you make a large or a few smaller raised beds to have about 12 inches of good slightly acid soi,l and plant tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, eggplant, radish, carrots, turnip (Purple top ) Kale, parsley, leaf lettuce(it keeps growing when it is cut ) bush type yellow or green beans. bush cukes,
I mention this because I have done this very successfully , it's a lot less work, mine are waist high which make them very comfortable to work with and easy to keep weed free,in your case you might want to put wire over them to protect them.
