Ice and Fire | 7 Challenging Days Camping in the Canadian Wilderness

  • An amazing 7 rough days in Canada's Algonquin Park with the winners of History's Alone, Jim Baird and Ted Baird, costarring Buck the adventure dog. Freezing temperatures, high winds, cold rain and difficult fishing conditions challenge our ability to keep warm, start fires and to catch enough fish to keep us energized.
Bull moose, loons and other wildlife accompany us as we paddle across lakes, down a flooded river for days through raging waterfalls and whitewater and then back up a steadily rising river for another couple of days.
Paddling solo, we each pilot our own canoes - me in my new Swift 14' carbon Prospector, Ted in a Swift Keewaydin and Jim in a Novacraft Prospector.
On day 4, we visit with Scott and Griffin of Drenalin Adventures and their friends at their amazing campsite on a beautiful Algonquin Park lake in the the heart of the park.
Despite the challenging fishing conditions, we manage to land in excess of 75 brook trout, the largest by Ted, measuring 21 inches and almost 4 pounds!

My Self Reliance I kinda had a laugh when you said you hadent seen anyone catch a bird while fishing. Not sure if you’ve heard of a RUclipsr named lunkerstv but for some reason down in Texas they catch birds all the time. Not on purpose I just want to say but it happened not once but twice in a week. 😉

I guess Buck is one of the laid back most relaxed Samuyeds I've ever witnessed! 🤗🤗🤗
Daddy pulls him => in the canoe => over a log => crossing that creek.
Buck just raised his head yawning just waked up in misunderstanding what all that fuzz is about and why he's not allowed just to sleep in this nicely shuckling canoe! 😍
      Hilarious!😊😊
Please more of trips like this Shwan!
      Ontario's wildetness it's so outstanding!👌

Being handicapped, COPD and 2 broken knees. I am relinquished to be shut in, at 48 years old, constantly attached to an oxygen concentraor and needing a 4 wheel walker to get about. When I was younger living in Calgary, and the Ottawa valley I spent many a weekends camping, fishing, and such. Your videos, help me forget about my problems, and take me away ro a place where I am there in the woods, smelling the smells, hearing the sounds. You really put a smile on my face, and a song in my heart. THANX SO MUCH MATE.. Bubba in Calgary

Look up anti inflammatory, COPD and Boswellia Serrata on Google Scholar. Boswellia is better known as frankincense. It is the resin of the tree, powdered for use.
It does not help bone, but for almost any soft tissue it is healing. You can buy it in bulk or in capsules on Amazon.
When you take it, mix it with sunflower or olive oil...never with water, which makes a sticky mess.
Dose depends on what you are taking it for, but I take a large dose several (1/2 tsp mixed in oil) times a day for two days, then taper back to maintaining beneficial effect...as little as 1/8 tsp mixed with a drop of oil.
It tastes like perfume, but you can rinse your mouth out with water afterward and it’s fine...clears the taste right out.
      Amazing stuff...please do some research!

My husband and I took many trips like yours, both alone and with 4 others. The Allagash of Maine, the Boundary Waters of MN. and the Green River of Utah were all great trips, as well as many trips to northern Maine and NH. My husband passed away 3 years ago so watching this video takes me back to the great times we had. We traveled and set up camp, fire and, fished the same as you. Dealing with good and bad weather, you live with your wits. I can smell the forest, the water, and the fish that you are filming. Thanks for the memories.

I’ve only ever been to Canada when we stayed on Lake Kabetogama and crossed over to a small fort area in Canada (tourist-y), but Shawn’s videos show so much beauty ... as long as I don’t have to drive in the winter and have enough bug repellant in the warmer months, I’d love to go visit deep in the woods

Reminds me of times my wife and I had hiking into the back country outside of Bruce Peninsula National Park 25 years ago -- well before the area became a hot-spot for beer-cooler laden individuals sprawling on the rocks of Georgian Bay like seals. The sounds of the loons while sitting on the shore of Emmet Lake with nobody around - just the two of us makes me want to return to those simpler times and just enjoy the simplicity of it all.

Culture turned to nature to awaken humankind, not to, the trimming and turfing of gardens, but wild nature.

I learned it from listening to and reading everything I could get my hands on about Lewis & Clark! That was a great study on them and I learned a lot about our countries! I drove an 18wheeler with my husband and all along the way I would see the L&C historical trail plaques and I always had to get out and read about it! I probably had a previous life as a trapper or Indian and I love to wilderness camp! Great video 👍🥰❤️ by the way, I’m watching this in August of 2021 and I need a camping trip from Covid 🤢🙏🎂💫

I am paralyzed from post vehicle accident in 2012 and depression takes me a lot but I can't let anyone of the family see what is happening maybe they stopped valuing me being around , sometimes I drink to feel better and sometimes nothing seems to be helping, I guess I move around a lot but no satisfaction ,when I am watching your videos, the way you work and at the end of the day when you rock back it's really inspiring, at least for me.
Your videos make me feel like I have accomplished something because you makes life so easy of course it's hard work that pays off in the end and again you makes it simple for your viewers. My parents and grandparents, my sister and I would camp from the early 1950s in the mid and upper part of Michigan's lower peninsula. It was pristine country and many folks that lived in the outlying areas still had hand pump wells and outhouses. Fishing was great, plenty of wildlife and plentiful firewood. I wish I could revisit those times. I thank you so much for taking this video - I did not want it to end.

When the vido started, I told myself "What, an hour and eleven, that is insane"... Then I started to watch... And watched...
This bring so much memories to me! The last time I did some canoes trips like that, I was in my early 20 and a rock climbing monitor in a summer camp in the middle of a triangle betwenn Montreal, Ottawa and St-Jovite/Mont Tremblant. I'm now 62, so it's been a while. We where doing 4 days of canoes on the "Rivière Rouge", a kind of jamboree for two days with three other groups and then 4 days of rock climbing.
I'm now overweigth and out of shape but this help to motivate me to get back in shape. It's too late for me to go on canoes trip like that but if I can just get back in shape enough to enjoy life and the outdoor a bit more, that would be great!

What river is that? It is scary swift. My father fished the south fork of I think it was the Boise River in Idaho when I was. a child. We were heading home to the Sawtooth mining town of Atlanta, he fishing all the 100 miles home in sporadic sections since my mother never drove. Dad was one of those naturals who caught fish when no one else did. I’m now in my 87th year and I remember him so well..

Oh Wow Shawnee, I really loved and thoroughly enjoyed the brotherhood between you all. Nature is so fantastic, and it looked so peaceful. My kind of life. A time to reflect and enjoy and count your lucky stars that you get to live your life in nature and live on the healthy food God Almighty provides. Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful experience you are all having.
I am sure Callie really misses you as much as you miss her and we miss her. She will be so excited to see you get home. I do hope you will video that homecoming. I love her, she is so adorable.😘

The walk along the river bank was fantastic. Campsites look well established and paths are clear. Cali turned white?! Another relaxing video, to which your calm speech pattern contributes. I keep watching for signs of wife. Hope your hand heals, you’ve been amazingly accident free. Appreciate all your efforts to share your story. My First comment, Mary

Ahhh, another amazing video! Makes my heart sing. I completely understand about not taking Callie and you are so thoughtful to even consider making it up to her. That one lake with no fish .... just stunning.... it was almost like an affront to make any noise there- it was that serene. I’m glad your illness didn’t seem to bother you. All that wonderful scenery and good fishing is good for what ails ya LOL.

One of the best vid so far Mr James. Long walk home in some cases.
Note: Loons are very territorial. Only one nesting couple per lake. Others may visit but they don't stay. Family Visit. They will also drown ducklings. They are an awesome bird.
